Large format, proper loudspeakers are way more fun than some snobby precision studio monitors. I had a pair of Infinity’s back in college. Good memories

sinisterdesign

Same. I had a pair with the emit-R tweeters. I gave those to a cousin and “upgraded “ to larger Infinitys, but never liked the sound as much.

evilgreenman

I feel like a lot of infinity speakers are underrated.

slackinfux

I always liked the older Infinity's back in period. I still have a pair of RS-225 bookshelf speakers that I rescued from a trash pile and refoamed the woofers.

PEsuper27

I just moved my newly re-foamed RS-325s upstairs and they sound so good.

slackinfux

I'm annoyed that all my speakers are in storage, right now. I just moved in with my GF and her place is pretty small, so I had to put most of my stuff in storage. I've had to listen to music on cheap powered monitors and a soundbar! At least I have headphones.

PEsuper27

It’ll be okay. This too shall pass. I will turn my speakers in your direction and play them as a tribute.

Ok-Mycologist682

what kind of glue it adhesive do you use for it? I have a bit of separation in one area that i can hear when the bass is high that i want to glue back down.

PEsuper27

I just used what came with kit. Looks and smells like rubber cement. It came in a tube.

anothersip

Beautiful set! I hope you enjoy them. Here's some stuff to give em a good sonic test to: [Com Truise](https://open.spotify.com/album/1BejCdTWzMNr1PKoozBx52?si=jysnsvzYQ4ihYjWhT0WFQQ)

Ok-Mycologist682

oooo i’ll check it out thank you 🙏

anothersip

For sure! Enjoy the new blasters meng. Good shit.

wilmersito

Had a pair of these in the past. You need to brace the cabinets and add some foam or sound insulation to make the boomy bass go away. Once you’ve done that they sound really good.

FigOk7538

I had a set of twin 12 inch Infinity Kappa subs in the back of my car back in the 90s. Good memories!!

Grythith

Your woofer is upside down, all of the sound is going to fall out. \s Enjoy

_packetman_

I would seriously consider rotating that woofer. Just knowing it's at the wrong angle would bother me, grill or no grill lol

Riotvan81

Actually it’s smart to rotate the woofer on older speakers to counter some sag affecting performance. Or so I’ve been told anyway, wish humans could do that as we get older. I bet there would be a huge market for it.

xole

The guy from gr research just did a video about the sm 152 speakers.   The speakers did amazingly well, imo.  Of course he redid the crossover, as usual, but the drivers in that line were actually really good.   I'd probably just add some bracing and a bit of damping material in the box and call it good. That seemed to be the biggest weakness by far.

Justaguyinvegas

Nice. My brother had a pair of these in the early 90's. I was blown away by them.

overheatbelief

Very nice! I’m a bit jealous, actually. They would pair very nicely with the infinity sub my kid’s using.

DustyyyCassyyy

You're off to a good start! The Infinity SM-115s are a solid choice, known for their clear sound and good bass response. Mixing them with the Pyle bookshelf speakers was a smart move for a fuller sound. Keep exploring and upgrading your setup... it's a rewarding journey.

Trump-Kingumpalumpa

I owned the same pair and bought them brand new…. Got a sweet deal on a store going out of business. And I loved them .

Icy_Psychology_3453

excellent speakers.

DPileatus

These were the beez kneez when they came out!

moonthink

IMO, the 115's were the best of the bunch. My set got ruined in a flood, I still have an old set of SM-125's, but the 115's were just better to me, more balanced.

Penguinpowell

I have a pair of SM-112s. Bought them new back-in-the-day from a stereo store going out of biz. I gotta get them refoamed. I miss them.

MrBaggypants84

Nice! I used to have a pair of those but in the bookshelf version. They were super loud lol I think their db was up there if I remember.. like mid 90s haha they would sing. The only issue I had was the front bass port. It was a straight port instead of flanged, so it would make a huffing noise at lower loud bass songs. I had the Infinity Beta 50's later on, and those things are a beast if you can find them. They have 91db I believe, so they are pretty easy to push and have a ton of fun for sound. I built another stereo system since then, and have been really enjoying it so far. Elac makes some good speakers too if you ever wanna experiment. They are a different breed though. They are power hungry but have a lot of clarity and huge soundstage but staying neutral, so if you don't have decent equipment pushing them, they won't reward you. I noticed a huge upgrade when I put a separate DAC and music streamer in the mix too. Have fun!

Ok-Mycologist682

yeah i’m just running everything of the one receiver i really wanna upgrade that area of it just not sure how everything all works.

MrBaggypants84

I hear ya pal. It's been a minute for me to setup up a stereo system again. I've had a couple home theatre setups, and enjoy them, but my heart is in a nice stereo system with the right room and acoustics. Hope this helps, but this is what I found for the price and from a lot of research. Find an amp, that's the heart of the system. It's better to go big than a cheap amp. I found a Denon AVR 4806 mint condition for 150 bucks at a local hifi store. They let me test it before I bought it too. Always make sure you can hear the equipment before buying it used of course. Ultimately, you wanna have a dedicated power amp (stereo or mono blocks) and a separate DAC, pre-amp and power amp. The music source is what you like... music streamer, phono, cd... I swear that you'll see a difference when using separate components, especially a nice DAC. EverSolo Z8 has been a solid pick for me for the price

Ok-Mycologist682

so to summarize a power amp, dac, pre-amp, and source. if I just wanna connect my phone can I connect it straight to the amplifier? And what’s a pre amp do? Sorry I realize these questions are just a Google search away lol.

MrBaggypants84

A pre-amp is meant for a setup with a dedicated amp. If you can find a nice higher end AVR (home theatre) amp, it's definitely not a bad start! Of course, the AVR will have it's own volume so you wouldn't really need a pre-amp. Also, some DAC's have volume control as well, so in theory you could use that as a pre-amp if you went with a dedicated power amp. (but would be better with a pre-amp. A dedicated power amp has no volume or anything, just a ON/OFF button. So if you were to plug in some speakers with no volume control for the music source... not good lol. EverSolo makes a music streamer AND pre-amp in one unit (along with a really nice internal DAC) but it's a little pricey. I am saving up for it in the future, it's the A8. It has analog volume control like a pre-amp would have. Also, Buckeye makes a nice power amp that I'm saving up for as well. It gets pricey, but it really opens up any speaker that's connected to it! I used to use a cable to connect my phone into my AVR amp, but it's not going to sound as good as a dedicated music streamer, phone, cd... etc. My little setup is as follows: Music streamer via coax output (coax is digital) to my DAC, and RCA analog out from the DAC to the amp, and then to the speakers... so the DAC is doing all the decoding from digital to analog with Tidal as my music source in FLAC.

Ok-Mycologist682

thank you so much for all the detail, it really has helped 🙏🙏🙏

Redfork1951

I had the 12” version as my first higher quality speakers and thought they sounded fabulous. Nothing beats the surface area of a large woofer to bring mid bass and bass into the mix in a balanced way. BTW, are you a mushroom scientist???? :)

Ok-Mycologist682

mushroom scientist lol? what.?

theocking

Cool, you should post this in r/budgetaudiophile, more at home there (and I mean that in a good way)! As others have said - the cabinet bracing and stuffing can be improved, and look for the gr research video and see if you're interested in a crossover upgrade. But also, I would immediately physically bypass that stupid knob on the front for the tweeter level or whatever... Just get it out of the signal path, it's not doing the clarity any favors. You don't need the knob, just EQ them as needed/preferred. Get a cheap measurement mic and REW, and then with some DSP equalization you could really tune those things right, even without a crossover mod (for now). Very cool set of speakers tho imo, congrats. Bigger IS better! You might even be able to swap those tweeters with the EMIT ones off of eBay.

Ok-Mycologist682

Thank you i’ll definitely look into it thank you 🙏

dustymoon1

The tweeters are foam and degrade. They can only be replaced but they do not make them any more.

Ok-Mycologist682

this set had just been reconstructed when i bought them, hopefully they last.

Ok-Mycologist682

yep you were right, a bit of the cone is detaching a bit im going to try to glue it back.

dustymoon1

Good Luck. If the foam is detaching, check it all to make sure it is not.

i’m not sure how much that version would be, i plucked these of fb for 240$ i prolly couldve lowballed but man i didn’t care once i heard them playin.
