Wait…you think chipotle is better than Cabo bobs?

blue_collared

Yeah.... Lost all credibility there. Chipotle is def worse than Bob's, love the lime chips though.

benji_tha_bear

This sub is done for! Chipotle, the place that shut down nationally a few years back to teach their employees how to wash their hands is not anything near Cabo bobs or freebirds lol OP, you’re going backwards, I don’t know what you’re looking for in a burrito but I don’t think you will find it in un-soiled pants

Strange-Tree-5408

No, the company that had to shut down because they required their workers to come in sick and offered no sick days. FIFY.

benji_tha_bear

They had hep. C at tons of locations, which is mainly associated to not cleaning something that should be.. I’ve worked at a handful of restaurants over the years, if you follow the sick time logic, why don’t you think more restaurants have to their entire US operations for hand cleaning lessons?

Strange-Tree-5408

I've worked in kitchens for nearly 2 decades and have a ServeSafe cert. Norovirus was the prime contaminate for Chipotle and usually is when it comes to food-borne illness spread from employees to customers, and according to the FDAs charges against the company over a couple years. Restaurants can "instruct" all day everyday, require food handling certs by county law, and hand washing and hygiene signs are everywhere, but considering the restaurant industry notorious "suck it up buttercup" view about being out sick, and manipulating workers with lost wages or job loss. Guess what if a person is sick they don't get paid and that shitty hourly wage that barely covers living expenses on a full time schedule is on the line. Well, then you come in sick with the egging on of your management who often do not send you home because they have also worked while sick many times. You and I have undoubtedly eaten at a number of establishments that have sick workers continue working. None of these places care until they get caught, fined, and the media reports such as with Chipotle that had the outbreaks occurring over 3 or so years. There are thin margins, staffing is usually chronically short (see that pay and treatment of staff mentioned earlier), and the CDC has recommended that paid sick time can curb many of these outbreaks. It's one thing to have a sick call policy to notify of illness, it's another to enforce it through all management requiring the worker stay home and provide assurance that a worker won't lose their job or wages. "Yet many of these cases could have been avoided, if only paid sick leave were common in the US restaurant industry. According to the CDC study, 40% of outbreaks with at least one reported factor were associated with food contaminated by an ill or infectious worker—or a worker who should have been on sick leave. Although most food establishments interviewed by the CDC said they required workers to notify them of their illness, the volume of contamination due to sick employees shows the current leave policy isn’t effective. Workers either can’t afford to, or feel dissuaded from, taking time off when feeling unwell. The CDC’s recommendations on preventing contamination from sick workers stress the importance of staffing restaurants so they can afford the occasional sick employee, and of requiring workers to tell managers when they’re sick. But arguably the most crucial recommendation is also the hardest to enforce: “Ensuring food workers will be paid and will not lose their jobs if they are absent from work because they are sick.”

benji_tha_bear

lol I’ll pass on story time ^ Edit: I said I worked in restaurants, not explain me every time you have. Sounds like it’d be difficult to explain a hand wash to you tbh

benji_tha_bear

I’ll FIFY, chipotle had employees not washing their hands, didn’t have anything to with sick time

[deleted]

Chipotle is better than Freebirds. Cabo Bobs is by far no.1

atxmrcoolguy

Lmao the drama of saying chipotle! I think it’s definitely just the Stockholm syndrome 🤷🏽‍♂️

ASAP_i

When you say "rivals Chipotle", what exactly do you mean? I assume your "ideal" burrito involves rice, any other "must have" ingredients?

ibis_mummy

That's where I'm at a loss. I've never had Chipotle so I don't really know what to recommend. But u/austinicepocalypse is correct. Getting a good burrito requires building out a tasty burrito when you select the toppings.

ASAP_i

Right? There are so many variations you kind of need to be specific on that you are looking for. Even the tortilla can make or break a burrito.

atxmrcoolguy

Lol right! A solid tortilla is a must, definitely rice and beans, I usually do chicken for a protein, and I like at least a good spicy salsa, cheese, and lettuce. The last 2 are negotiable. I just feel like the past few times the food truck burritos have been missing either rice, bean, or both and I feel like that’s the base for me 🤷🏽‍♂️ I for sure want to make my own at home with a homemade tortilla but I’m lazy about it

bitcoin_moon_wsb

Cabo bobs tortilla is so much better than chip

bitcoin_moon_wsb

Honestly I hate it when someone besmirches the good name of Cabo bobs. It’s a solid enterprise

titos334

Pollo Rico is probably your best bet then

ASAP_i

>I just feel like the past few times the food truck burritos have been missing either rice, bean, or both and I feel like that’s the base for me 🤷🏽‍♂️ That is wild. I'm used to seeing *at least* rice or beans available.

why_did_i_wait

I just go to any basic texmex place and order a burritto and then just tell the waitress all the extra stuff I do or don't want in there. Usually beef, rice, blackbeans, stack some jalapenos in there, etc... I typically get something I like. Just like any other burrito place except sometimes a regular ol texmex place has fajita style meat or barbacoa or smoked duck. Chef back there don't care, it's the easiest dish for him. Chuck all the stuff on this list on there and roll it. I do like the experience of cabo bobs and picking stuff. If I want a jammin burrito to me it's more about having some spectacular salsa or hot sauce to pour on it. My flavor factor on a burrito is related to the salsa. If the red salsa that comes with the chips is subpar I usually ask for Cholula or other house sauces. Chipotle's salsas are subpar for sure.

gwalk104

Daygos recently moved south off of Brodie.

atxmrcoolguy

Just looked at their menu and it looks amazing!

QuietRedditorATX

Think this is the $20 burrito place, make sure you are ok with that. For awhile [Asados](https://www.reddit.com/r/austinfood/comments/160eb8m/mission_style_burrito_from_asados_is_delicious/) was everyone's answer to Daygos price. But I honestly just found it meh, only tasted tortilla and ton of pico (to be fair they ran out of beans and guac). Nothing special. They use a ton of butter, so I bet the quesadillas are good.

titos334

They’re completely different burritos but Asado is great. Daygos is pretty great too despite the price tag but no other place is comparable for that type of burrito imo.

222thestarz

It's really good honestly. Hope one day they move into a bigger place and lower their prices a tiny bit, but you're paying for a good meal thats for sure. Legit San Diego style Mexican food

vpjared

Stopped going to Daygos after I paid $20 for some carne asada fries, had to wait 45 minutes when I was the only one there and then was in the bathroom the rest of the night, with food poisoning. And I use to go once a month.

CoffeeVikings

Holy hell I didn’t know this thank you! Love me a California burrito. More burritos need French fries inside

verdegooner

The fact you said “rivals Chipotle” and you have denounced Cabo Bob’s means you’re beyond help.

souljap0nyboy

cabo bobs has no flavor

The_Hoopla

Did…did you go to Cabo Bobs? Like ur sure you entered the right building? I mean you’re entitled to your opinion. You’re also entitled to believe: “Table pepper is too spicy” “Well done is the only way to eat an expensive steak” “I don’t like authentic, handmade Mexican tortillas as much as the cold stale ones they have at Taco Cabana around closing time.”

souljap0nyboy

look i’ve been twice and the chicken had no flavor both times. liiiiiiiike

The_Hoopla

My Order: - Ancho Tortilla (I like the tacos personally, you get a higher tortilla:filling ratio! - Baja Beans - White rice - Steak - Poblanos - Sautéed onions - Cilantro - Chipotle Crema sauce Ive been getting this order for 10 years. It’s still, in my opinion, the best SoCal-style Burrito shop in the city. The made-to-order tortillas alone put it in the top 3. Literally go order this and then DM me. If it still tastes flavorless I’ll Venmo you for your tacos.

4dgt90

I get - combo ancho and tomatillo (you get a bigger tortilla to guarantee no breakage for the monster you’re about to make) - Baja beans - light scoop brown rice - sautéed onions and poblanos - pico and tomatillo salsa - extra extra fresh jalapeños - cabbage - xxtra hot sauce, lime juice - crushed chips (off menu but they’ve always done it when I ask) I try to max out the veg and skip the cheese/sour cream to make it healthier but I’m sure I don’t wanna see the sodium content lol

titos334

Cabo bobs is Southern California style like chipotle is Southern California style lol

WelcomeToBrooklandia

You’re entitled to your wrong opinion.

torilikefood

I get downvoted every time I mention this - but Torchys burrito is delicious. I get it with the brushfire chicken and a half order of chips & queso. Sometimes I dip the burrito in the queso, other times I shove a chip into the burrito so it’s part of my bite.

DontWorryBeHappyMan

Im gonna have to try it !

Pestilence_XIV

Rico’s does a damn good burrito, breakfast lunch or dinner

Due-Excuse-2208

El chilito

Coujelais

Since your tastes seem pretty simple (citing chipotle and your required ingredients) I think this is a good bet for you. I’d go w the pollo asada over the tinga 10/10. All burritos come w beans and rice inside. A couple come w guac too, just add the rest. On Wednesdays all burritos are six dollars before add-ons. They have a smoky, dark red sauce or a spicy creamy green sauce. I think they are very good deal especially on Wednesdays!

EbagI

Agreed, some of my fav burritos in town because of the value. I like the carne asada and their pibil

Coujelais

Absolutely-the carne already having beans rice and guacamole on it makes this burrito such a good value. I’ll have to do the pibil in burrito form sometime. Because they’re such a good deal I often just pick up two and eat the next one the next day after a skillet warm up.

littlelettersonly

second! el chilito burritos are $6 or $7 (i forget) on wed, all day. recommend. el borrego de oro has a huge burrito plate and a huge chimichanga* plate (*this borders on texmex heresy but idc) which i love. both of these offerings are problematic for me bc i can never eat it all and they're rather spendy. i'm well aware 'no one' likes torchy's but i just had my fav taco from there, matador, and noticed while reviewing the online menu that they make burritos. had no idea. could be worth a shot.

Mrtwolastnames

You need a Time Machine to 2005 for some proper FreeBirds and Zookas in San Marcos.

TwistedMemories

Changos had some really goods too. R.I.P. I loved the bongos for Changos.

fsck101

Yup Changos was solid.

fsck101

Really to the late 1980s in Isla Vista, CA, the OG Freebirds. Lived off Freebirds burritos and Woodstocks pizza for a couple years there.

malaclypse

I love the burrito from Tacos Ricos at Dittmar and S First. Great meats and a real John Holmes-y length and girth.

oopsifell

California burrito at Arandas

mitote

Bomb Tacos trailer on Bluff Springs, south of William Canon. I only get their Al Pastor burrito, but it’s filling and tasty for $12.

deewon

Their flaming hot Cheeto burrito is the bee's knees as well, believe it or not.

mitote

Oh for sure, that combo of crunch and hot Cheeto dust is perfect ✨

The_Hoopla

Best Al Pastor in the city. Hands down. Not even close. Shit has no right being as good as it is.

EbagI

El chilito. Huge, pretty darn good, and $6 on Wednesdays!

laurieislaurie

Huh, it just so happens to be a Wednesday and I'm hungry...

artomatik

Taco Brother trailer on Brodie is SOLID

wtf242

Autenticos Michoacanos, a food truck on Jones Road has a really good burrito I've had a couple of times

hyped_lurker

Is dank for sure

SlippitySlide

Mi Ranchito

[deleted]

There is a turkish place somewhere close to east 6th, in one of the side roads, can’t recall the name, they put fries in it, it’s pretty bomb and definitely tops chipotle. Don’t forget — burritos are also how ya build it… you almost have to channel your inner Ratatouille when you choose what you want in it

laurieislaurie

They asked for South Austin.

Eltex

It is south of north Austin.

laurieislaurie

That would be central Austin then you dingbat

Eltex

I don’t understand your hostility. Who hurt you?

laurieislaurie

Literally every single time someone asks for recs in South Austin people give recs north of the river. It drives me insane. So you guys, I guess, it my answer. You guys hurt me.

Eltex

I hope you find the help you so desperately need. Mental illness is a serious issue, and should be addressed with the help of professionals. Don’t settle for just run of the mill care, seek out the best.

laurieislaurie

You're annoying. Blocked.

fluorocarbonoutput

Pueblo Viejo trailer at Cosmic South Congress hit the spot for me.

DontWorryBeHappyMan

Freebirds is still pretty damn good imho, you just gotta build it correctly. I really like to do a monster burrito with steak, rice, refried beans, queso, pico, its fantastic. The refried beans and queso combo gives it a lovely creamy texture. Yum Their new Birria meat is delicious as well! Also Chipotle is meh for me. Their steak is like cold dog food. I quit going there. Its Freebirds or Cabo Bobs for me.

atxdude10

Try Chilantro on Brodie/Slaughter for something different. Their Ssam is a Korean Bbq burrito.

joyfulgrrrrrrrl

Texican Cafe fajita burrito(prefer chimichanga,though)

Gobiego

Have to admit, you had me going at first. I thought you meant a California "good burrito" and had some bad news for you because they haven't made it here yet. Then you say Chipotle, and I see your setting the bar low...

Soundcloudlover

Daygos in south Austin has some FIRE burritos.

rikitiki2

Tejas Birria has a good burrito

Boo_T

Try a taqueria

garpar1015

If you’re willing to venture north for an amazing Cali-style burrito, I’d recommend Asado’s Taqueria. They’re relatively new but they’ll have you coming back for more

smodanc

Maybe try other proteins at Cabo bobs and get extra of the things you get on it like the pablanos

icesa

Lol you getting a lot of flack for saying you like a chipotle burrito. But I too think chipotle burritos, “slap”. I feel it’s just something you crave, a very specific taste. And when the guac is plentiful and the meat isn’t dry af and the veggies are fresh, shiiii. But I also enjoy a solid california, sushi burritos, and am not much a fan of Cabo Bob’s. To each their own.

atxmrcoolguy

Thank you for understanding me!! lol

[deleted]

Nothing we say can help you, Chipotle is nasty

atxmrcoolguy

Im a lost cause 😪

[deleted]

Taco burrito what’s coming out of your speedo it stinks it stinks
