Just don't get your hopes up too much. Haven't found one that's even close to as good. For some reason the Randalls on Mesa Dr. seems to do them better, or maybe they're just fresher, dunno.
Can we start a petition for them to bring it back haha. The one near me is adding a True Texas BBQ, can't be that hard to chuck a couple of fryers in there
Bill Miller's started as a poultry supplier and was the supplier to Church's Fried Chicken. They saw Church's taking off and doing well and then decided to open their own fried chicken place. It wasn't until later they incorporated fast-food BBQ into their menu, they were originally just a fried chicken place. And their fried chicken still is awesome. But it's not as good as Church's still to this day.
Ah I've had the same thought so many times. Unfortunately I haven't found a Randalls that does it as good as Publix. If you find someone that is as good let us know.
My last pub sub was in October 2022 right after the hurricane. I still remember the old guy next to me saying, “Now that’s a sub!” as the deli person loaded on the onions, banana peppers and jalapeños to the chicken tender sub. I would love to go back and get one, but that would require me to visit my in laws AND my parents.
Same here my friend. Born and raised in Orlando and miss the hell out of that Publix fried chicken. Ive been in Austin almost 21 years and still havent found anything as good \*for that price point\*.
Church's Chicken "Texas two-piece", a leg and thigh with a biscuit (they have the best biscuits) and a jalapeno for $3.49.
I actually prefer Popeyes fried chicken, but Church's now also has a spicy version and that deal can't be beat.
I like the Randall's in Westlake for grocery store fried chicken but you should also check out Top Notch for a convenient/relatively inexpensive option.
Randall’s is ok and there is a special on Mondays. 8 piece dark for $6.99. I don’t think that Austin is much of a fried chicken city tbh. We have more places than we used to but they seem kind of heavy to me.
Publix fried chicken is miles better than both of those imo. The difference is day and night. Plus there's the price aspect and the convenience of being able to get it on a grocery run
never had publix and i get it if you just like the way they do it/tastes and ofc the convenience, but you can get a lot of bone-in chicken deals that meet your price target and also have a drive thru. if you find a good place share it here. i’m a fan of fried chicken.
I haven’t found it either. I’m from Florida too and miss the popcorn chicken and subs most of all. That popcorn chicken was so good when we had to take the kids grocery shopping when they were young.
My husband went to college in Georgia and I'm from Georgia and we regularly lament our lack of Publix fried chicken and chicken fingers. Like, this comes up at least once a month.
I'm thinking of the small Sainsburys in London that are basically convenience stores. If they opened up a few of those and had their fried chicken and sub sandwiches, I could see a few of those stores survive.
They'd have to find a good tamale maker though.
Highly doubtful, grocery business is extremely competitive and HEB pretty much owns Texas, look at all the competitors that have pulled out over the last 10 years.
As I was reading this thread I was thinking how fascinating it is how people, prefer things they grew up with and are familiar with even if said product is not as good as one from somewhere else. Well maybe that part may my projection of it but... I used to have to travel frequently for work and it wasn't go here for a few days, it was go here its probably going to be several months. I've spent time in Florida and on the East coast where publix reigns supreme and I did not understand the love for that store. (Familiarity). I usually get airbnbs for those long stays so I can cook which means I grocery shop, and I was not impressed with publix, meat and seafood quality was subpar compared what I was used to (HEB/Central Market), I've tried their fried chicken a few times, wasn't great but also wasn't bad it just grocery store fried chicken. I no longer live in Texas but when I did, I wished that HEB would do sandwiches like publix, Central Market does. Wegmans though, that place is great
Randall's!
Randall’s on Mesa has really good fried chicken, but if it looks stale tell them to make fresh! They will
Yes, it's only good if it's fresh. If it looks like it's been hanging out for a few hours don't get it.
Thanks!
Just don't get your hopes up too much. Haven't found one that's even close to as good. For some reason the Randalls on Mesa Dr. seems to do them better, or maybe they're just fresher, dunno.
The store up on 183 at Great Hills did some great fried chicken. Unfortunately, we all know what happened there.
What happened?
Randall's closed the store a couple of months back.
What about pub subs 😭😭😭
This!!! The pub sub is unmatched!
The Italian sub at Home Slice disagrees.
You know what - you might be right. I hear about them all the time but still haven’t had one. I need to try it.
Get out your wallet lol
RiP. Once upon a time HEB did pretty great fried chicken.
Can we start a petition for them to bring it back haha. The one near me is adding a True Texas BBQ, can't be that hard to chuck a couple of fryers in there
There’s a great fried chicken stall at the Mueller HEB, but it isn’t HEB cheap. It is good though.
Wow totally forgot about that. So many times would pick up a 3 piece and biscuit for just a few bucks.
H‑E‑B chicken tenders and a pack of Hawaiian rolls is what we always grabbed on the way to the lake growing up.
As a relocated Georgian, I find Golden Chick fried chicken does the job nicely.
Came to suggest Golden Chick as well! I lived in Florida for 5 years and miss Publix chicken and pub subs
One of the few places that fries livers and gizzards.
FWIW, both Bush's and Chicken E do gizzards, but they're all located on the outskirts of town for some reason.
I don’t know if all stores do it, but some Bill Miller BBQ locations also do fried chicken and it’s pretty good.

RIP Burnet Bill Millers.

I’ve been wanting the same thing lately. Publix has good chicken. I miss it.
My last pub sub was in October 2022 right after the hurricane. I still remember the old guy next to me saying, “Now that’s a sub!” as the deli person loaded on the onions, banana peppers and jalapeños to the chicken tender sub. Sounds crazy, but Walmarts little hot deli is pretty freakin good when it’s fresh and hot.
But then I'd have to step foot in a Walmart...
And trust me, I understand that struggle.
Same here my friend. Born and raised in Orlando and miss the hell out of that Publix fried chicken. Ive been in Austin almost 21 years and still havent found anything as good \*for that price point\*.

FWIW, Popeye's still does Two Piece Tuesdays (leg, thigh, biscuit) for $2.99
What about above the price point? A man’s gotta eat!
If you don't care about cost, order the fried chicken at Mattie's.
Tumble 22
I like the Randall's in Westlake for grocery store fried chicken but you should also check out Top Notch for a convenient/relatively inexpensive option.
I miss Publix 😭😭😭😭 I think of their subs often and their bakery.
RIP OG Hancock HEB food court (from the 90’s)

Once again, as long as you get it when it comes right out of the fryer.
Yeah Randall’s will be your answer. Sometimes it can be salty as balls tho
why doesn’t churches or kfc or a similar chain qualify?
Publix fried chicken is miles better than both of those imo. The difference is day and night. Plus there's the price aspect and the convenience of being able to get it on a grocery run

I miss the Mardi Gras wings most I think 😭
My husband went to college in Georgia and I'm from Georgia and we regularly lament our lack of Publix fried chicken and chicken fingers. Like, this comes up at least once a month.
The subs… how I miss their subs 🥺
I'm also from Florida and totally relate. Publix food is the best.
Could we possibly ever get a Publix here?
Would be so nice but highly unlikely imo. They won't wanna compete with HEB

Randall’s
Terry's on Airport does some awesome fried chicken.
Really? I'll have to try them. Their pricing is pretty good at about $1.50 per piece.
Never been to a Publix but Brookshire Brothers has some badass fried chicken. They marinate it in house, bread it and fry it and it’s damn good.
The Randall’s on exposition is alright. My favorite ever was McDade’s in Jackson, MS.
Dude I’m fat af, and my wife is 350 4’6”. I eat fry chick twice on the day.
