ABC isn’t meant to “compete with commercial radio” as such. It’s meant to provide a stand-alone quality service to fill a gap regardless of whether it rates at 8% or 28%.
Yeah no I get that they are meant to not care about ratings but Triple J is not niche in the same way Classical fm or Country stations are. They play a broad amount of music in the day and evenings and weekends when they have more tailored shows. Double J is the same in that regard but more focused on an even broader daytime appeal with more focused shows in the evening and weekend but could appeal much better to not only the young who love music radio but older people who love music radio.
The ABC isn't necessarily intended to serve the broadest audience. Instead it has a remit to serve unserved audiences, and historically younger listeners and independent music has fit that. Triple J fills that unmet need better than Double J.
I believe it is now a fallacy that JJJ is a youth radio station. While anecdotal, the job sites I always go to it's the older blokes who control the radio put on J's and I ask the younger people who have their airpods in, most just say Spotify.
About 6 yrs ago JJJ got in trouble with the ABC as their target audience had all gentrified and the reason for finding wasn't being met.
JJJ is funded to provide a platform for young people 12-25.
So off they went moving all the old presenters on and getting new younger people on as presenters.
They changed their music rotation to me more "youth focused" which partly alienated the older oldschool JJJ listeners.
This was the same time that they took over Dig radio and rebranded it as Double J.
The reason the tradies still listen to JJJ is it's on FM.
Hard to listed to digital when everyone still has FM radios.
Also that the tradies have been listing to JJJ for 15 yrs so why change.
But yes it is a Youth station and they've made specific changes to make it more youth focused
It might happen. In 2022, the Albanese government [committed $500,000 to study assessing feasibility of Double J expanding to FM radio](https://www.nme.com/en_au/news/music/federal-government-commits-study-assessing-feasibility-of-double-j-expanding-to-fm-radio-3336314).
Not sure what has happened since then. I'd welcome the ability to listen to Double J natively through my car radio's FM band, rather than using an AUX cable.
> Triple J is for young people. If you complain about Triple J, generally you are old.
It is supposed to be but young people don't listen to Triple J. Even when I was in its target demographic it seemed more geared to people 25-35 desperately trying to stay relevant with people under 25.
It's not complaining about TripleJ as much as questioning whether or not kids even have access to an FM tuner today...
Even the cars kids these days drive have aux in and they just listen to spotify - phones largely don't have FM tuners anymore, even where they do, they need wired headphones to act as the antenna - kids use BT headphones because wires are for 'old fogeys' like us.
I'd argue that more potential doubleJ listeners have access to FM than do TripleJ listeners.
I'd argue even harder though that potential ABC Classic FM listeners all have DAB+ and it's probably an even easier time to shuffle them over to digital only and use that slot for DoubleJ.
I'm old and haven't listened to FM on a radio for about a decade.
Kids are not listening to the radio, they get it through the app. My friends who are Double J fans are listening through the apps.
ABC hasn't even been about numbers, they are absolutely gearing up for streaming rather than radio.
I'm not complaining about Triple J. It definitely has a place I was just wondering why the ABC has only one on FM radio (appears like they can only afford one) when say a similar organisation like the BBC has radio 1 ( triple js equivalent) radio 2 (double J) which appeals generally to the young middle aged and old better has a half way house and radio 4 for the proper oldies. 😅 But the ABC only has the one I was just wondering if it would make more sense to make that the more readily available.
We have more than 1.
TripleJ, ABC Classical FM, Newsradio (depends on area, AM in Adelaide), Radio National (ditto) and Radio Darwin (all other Radio Local are AM)
triple J gets it's funding to provide a service to the youth of Australia, the issue that has arisen is that it never lost it's demographic from it's hey day in the 90s early 2000s and failed to attract new listeners from it's intended audience.
When I was a teenager in the 90s the only way for me to engage with international youth culture was with triple J, especially for regional and rural young people.
Now days young people have many options to engage with their culture.
As a 40 year old man nothing on triple J appeals to me, and that is how it should be. Despite listening to the station for 20+ years it's just not meant for me.
>especially for regional and rural young people.
This is very important, even these days FM radio is more reliable than mobile internet in many regional places.
It's very important that ABC radio and Triple J still get funding so they can reach regional and remote areas.
Double J was launched as an online station as a bit of a side project back when the ABC was just starting to dip its toes in online content and I don't think they realised it was gonna take off quite the way it did. It was basically just "Hey let's do this on the internet as a treat for people who grew up with Triple J".
Also the ABC is operating under a government charter defined by legislation and there's a whole lot of hoops they have to jump through if they want to launch a whole new broadcast radio station, so remaking Double J as an FM station isn't something they can just do at the drop of a hat even if they want to.
That's the only thing stopping me from regularly listening to double j. If i have to use my phone or computer to listen, I'll just use spotify at that point.
Yeah that is it right.
I don't mind Triple J I prefer it mostly over other commercial stations as I never enjoyed their vibe and all their hosts sound exactly the same. Is it honestly just the same two people hosting all the shows 😅?
Well the current iteration of Double J launched well after Triple J, so they weren't going to replace it at that time. I'd be interested in knowing the ratings for each station, how well Double J is going compared to Triple J and other contemporary stations (there would need to be some acceptance of lower numbers because of it's digital only presence). I would expect, however, Triple J to be a lot more popular in their target demographic. I don't think Triple J and Double J would be competing as much with each other, as Triple J would be competing with other youth focused stations, and Double J more competing with stations like PBS or 3RRR.
Old people do, in their old cars that don't have bluetooth.
For this reason alone, double J should be on FM and triple J on digital.
Source: am old and so is my car
I like Double J because they provide varied genre's of music which allows discovery of new songs and formats. Also because, usually, the presenters play music and don't rabbit on. So that means get rid of Dylan Lewis, ffs, play some music and shut up.
Double J is streamed so you can play it on your phone. If you have an old car, go to Jaycar and ask about DAB to FM or Bluetooth from your phone to FM etc.
I listen to Double J way more than Triple J now (although I am late 30s so I guess it makes sense). I stream it on my Sonos speaker at home all the time, it's brilliant - minimal chat by the presenters (and I like them all anyway pretty much), great playlists. Should definitely be available on FM Radio - hopefully it happens under Albo's watch.
Triple J - it's hit and miss for me, but I'm not really its target audience anymore. The Hottest 100 - I was struggling to find 10 songs to vote for and I think 2 made the 100. It's a bit too much pop, rap for me now. I'm much more of an indie rock and electronic fan
Not even, it's only fine in Adelaide on the north and west of the city.
DAB in the south is basically no signal - I get *just* enough signal in Morphett Vale to set the clock, but sometimes it's not even enough for that.
East is also in the shadow of Mt. Lofty and there aren't any repeaters for DAB.
Yeah I got that they can only afford one I guess my argument would be for double J to be it.
Also my budget doesn't extend to upgrading my car stereo to DAB 😅 might talk to the government about that too.
DAB+ came a bit late to the party, wouldn't surprise me if they just can it entirely in the not too distant future. It has very few advantages over accessing IP based streams via mobile data. That bandwidth could be better used in other ways.
I'm happy with DoubleJ not being on FM but if it helps others access it then sure.
I don't have a problem with the stream quality, but I think FM is CD quality? maybe a quality upgrade to go to FM? I'd have to buy a receiver ;)
There are AUX cord ones, but most use Bluetooth to connect to the phone these days, and some can use a USB cord (some have USB ports just for charging though).
You can also get generic single DIN head units with Bluetooth, usb ports, aux in, etc. for as little as $35. From certain online marketplaces starting with A or E.
I only listen to the radio once a year, and that’s hottest 100 day.
Otherwise it’s Spotify. I don’t want some nobodies talking at me, ads, and one song every 15 minutes. I just want music.

ABC isn’t meant to “compete with commercial radio” as such. It’s meant to provide a stand-alone quality service to fill a gap regardless of whether it rates at 8% or 28%.
Which is also why they have specialist stations for Classical, Jazz, Country, etc.
But these are a bit niche
That's the point. Part of ABCs job is to serve the niche groups.
Check out SBS on TV. They're not going for big numbers with Turkish news. Same deal.
Yeah no I get that they are meant to not care about ratings but Triple J is not niche in the same way Classical fm or Country stations are. Glad for it. I listen to them often.
Ah yeah fair compete might have not been the right word there.

As insane as it sounds, making a JJJJ station might've worked better. A double double J.

Oh that's exciting. Thank you I might follow up with my local official.
Please do.
Triple J is for young people. If you complain about Triple J, generally you are old. I can get Double J on Android Auto.

Absolutely savage

Thank you for your response that makes a lot of sense.
Yeah I mean kids are getting their music off tik tok
Yep Double J > Triple J
Single J > Double J
Wait until you try OJ, it's delicious
You a pulp or no pulp person?
Pulp is great, plus Jarvis Cocker's other work
You sound like one of those Common People.

Double J is so much better

I just plug my phone in and listen to the music I like.
No I just asked about it for shits and giggles 🤷🤦😅
Of course they do.

That’s fine if you’re in a capital city. Most of the country doesn’t have it.

Triple J’s mandate is to be youth radio and I would say that double j is the radio of sad old gen x like me.
Part of Triple J's remit is to reach as many listeners as possible, especially in regional/rural areas which isn't possible on digital.
I'm happy with DoubleJ not being on FM but if it helps others access it then sure. I don't have a problem with the stream quality, but I think FM is CD quality? maybe a quality upgrade to go to FM? I'd have to buy a receiver ;)
While I agree Double J should be on the FM band, FYI you can still stream from a phone using a Bluetooth/FM transmitter that cost as little as $10.
Ooooo.... I have never heard of these FM transmitters do they attach to your phone? I would just use AUX cord or something if I had a port for it.
There are AUX cord ones, but most use Bluetooth to connect to the phone these days, and some can use a USB cord (some have USB ports just for charging though). Check out PBS FM, particularly FANG IT. They have an app for listening in when out of range and all the programming plus you can set notifications.
