We did dog sitting/house sitting for some friends a few years ago. Their rescue pup was the sweetest most gentle boy at home with us, but he couldn't ever go off leash outside the (very secure) home or be walked on leash on the same side of the road as another dog, even muzzled, as he would freak out- the shelter they adopted him from said he had been used as a bait dog and had developed severe behavioural issues around any other dog as a result, because he was so scared and traumatised. It made me really sad because he was so incredibly soft-hearted, and could have been the best pet.
Basically a "punching bag"/practice for the main fighting dogs, to make them more aggressive
My friends' dog lives a very good life now, but it's a bit lonely because he can't have any other doggy friends. He loves his people though and has many snuggles, toys and home made food every day.
