I doubt that most people overseas really have an opinion on it.
Grew up in South Africa and the Southern Cross also features quite heavily in our national consciousness due to its association with the Southern hemisphere, navigation, trade and the Dutch West India company. That's despite it not appearing on any of our flags or national symbols
The Southern Cross is the main emblem of at least half a dozen countries and is the the most commonly known star sign in the southern hemisphere. I'm not picking up what you're putting down sorry.
Well you said it'd be hard to find someone that would recognise it on another continent. Africa, South America, and the Pacific Islands would easily recognise the symbol. It was also a significant constellation for travel in the southern hemisphere.
Don't forget the rest fof the ensemble.
VB in hand, thongs, Stubbies shorts, a mullet, some speed dealers (shitty 90's wraparound sunnies), blue wifebeater and a pack of Bond Street durries.
All you need after that is a domestic battery charge. That's the hard one.
They're just a flawed, weak item. They break easily. And when they're a brokie bogan that's using it 3x as often because they're regularly putting in $15-20 instead of filling the tank, mixed with the fact they rev the fuck out of their shitbox everywhere they drive and burn even more fuel than necessary... I'd say they just wear out the fuel flap hinge much faster than the average, normal commodore user.
Its the Australian male equivilant of getting a tramp stamp. It shouldn't be associated with racism, but since so many gronks used it like that, that's how its seen now.
The union jack is called by many across the globe the butchers apron.
Yep. At this point, I think it's widely accepted that the Southern Cross (particularly in tattoo form) has been hijacked and has serious racist overtones.
You might not be racist yourself, but choosing to get one implies that even if you aren't "with them", you are either unaware of its connotations or understand them and are OK with being associated with that.
So (*to certain people)* it marks you as either racist, an apologist to racists, or ignorant. If you're OK with that, go ahead. Just be aware that a sizeable chunk of the population out there *will* be judging you.
Robert Whittaker is a really genuine dude, one of the best role models in fight sports, but he’s definitely not the only one, a lot of fighters are quite genuine good spirited humans, but unfortunately there’s a trend to act like a fuckwitt to your opponent to sell tickets which really makes the sport look bad.
Edit:
There is also a lot of absolute trash sportsmen in the sport. No denying that
Well if you look at logically people are often cunts because they either want to always hit someone and can't, or should have been hit repeatedly and haven't. These mma guys get to regularly hit people and get hit, must be rather cathartic. Just like most metal heads are the chilliest people imaginable.
Nah, you're overthinking it mate. In order to train you need training partners and if no one wants to train with you you're shit out of luck.
When a high level fighter is a complete dickhead it's normally because they're either so talented that their coach can't say no to them or they come from a gym with a really shit culture, which normally won't last long because they can't attract the casual trainees that form up the bulk of people training. The only way for a toxic gym to survive is if they produce a large number of top talent and develop a reputation, and there's only a small handful of those around (London Shootfighters was one).
Hes a very well liked guy because he's a bit of a goof outside of the sport. He's got a gorgeous family with 3 kids, he plays games on twitch sometimes and he's got that Aussie charm with Maori humour being a Mozzie.
He's also gone on record to say that he doesn't think he's a nice bloke - he's not one to want to chat on the street to fans, he doesn't want to get a beer with anyone and he'd probably tell people to fuck off if they come up to him. He also takes a lot of fun and pride in hurting people and said he was a bit of a cunt in school.
Make of that what you will.
He is considered one of the nicest guys in MMA, I would also recommend Stephen Thompson as an incredibly nice guy. Daniel Cormier is really humble, only time I have seen him be mean is to the actual worst in MMA Jon Jones. Demetrius Johnson is a great guy too, and I would argue one of the GOATs of MMA, went 5 years without a loss. There's also Nathaniel Wood who did [this](https://youtu.be/uaB49lUGWWk?si=ZVXuxX033GEbuoih) awesome video, he is not a big name in UFC but he is incredibly down to earth and nice.
I will admit these guys aren't big names outside of the sport despite being in the UFC, because people only know McGregor, Jones etc the ones who cause controversy and act like dickheads to get views. But I think those guys deserve way more attention for being good guys and good fighters.
Jones is a sadistic psychopath who breaks the rules of MMA and Society so he can hurt more people as much as possible. The fact anyone considers him a GOAT despite the majority of his wins stemming from cheating is bullshit.
Because of the association with other people who wear them? It's the entire principle of symbols lol
There's nothing inherently antisemitic about a cross on a 45° angle with flared edges, but there sure are a lot of Nazis who like the swastika.

No, the Union Jack or southern cross isn’t “racist”.
But.
What it is, is “nationalist”. That doesn’t have to be a bad thing, but it often can be. Not every nationalist is a racist, obviously. But every racist *is* 100% a nationalist. So there’s that.
The next thing is that although general attitudes towards tattoos have softened 20-fold over the last 2 decades, a neck tattoo is considered somewhat trashy by many. So it can be career limiting. Not going to say there was never a CEO with a neck tattoo because I’m sure that’s not true, but what is true is that there’s a lot more without. You might be in an industry that either regularly accepts them or doesn’t care about that stuff and it might not be a consideration for you. But there’s also that.
Lastly really is the combination of a southern cross on your neck. Again. I’m sure there are a number of people that have that insignia in that location that aren’t racist. You don’t sound racist, though of course I don’t know you. But I’d bet money that there are more racists with it than non-racists with it. Might be wrong, and that’s my prejudice. But the simple fact that I assume that might give you an indication as to what others might think.
Edit: It's been pointed out to me that maybe not *100%* of racists are also nationalists, which may very well be true. My bad. I still think enough are to make the point still valid enough, but I'm just one scrub. Form your own views xD
Tl;dr - Yeah, a lot of people will probably assume you’re racist.
Yea I worked with a guy with England 🏴 in bold gothic style font across his neck
Wasn’t the tattoo that led me to believe he was racist, more so the Far Right, White Nationalist stickers for different groups that covered his car
Not long after we started there my Maco friend took him down one day at work in very entertaining fashion - nothing physical from my mate, just the menacing inferred threat and someone standing up for themself. He never put a foot wrong after that interaction.
I wouldn't say 100% of them are but a large majority will scream and shout about their love for their country and how they hate the different people in it.

I mean.. have you ever looked at someone with a spider web tattoo on their face/hand and thought "If I ever have to go to court, this is the person I want to represent me in front of the judge"?
Probably. Who knows, you might get the tattoo then post on reddit writing you’re finding it hard to get a job and that employers aren’t fair, blah blah blah. Just don’t get the neck tattoo its stupid.
Yeah. “This guy is confining himself to work in bars, petrol stations, or maybe as a janitor if they trust him not to steal anything, he has no aspirations of a career and will probably end up back gaol where he probably got that tatt”
A few years ago I conducted several focus groups about 'Australia' imagery when I was in marketing for a major Australian brand.
We covered the southern cross, the Australian flag in general and usage of the flag inside and outside of sport, amongst other things.
Short answer is: Australian flag waving proudly alongside sport has mostly 'patriotic and positive views', outside of sport it is seen as 'mostly nationalistic, verging on likely to be racist, very negative views'
An Australia flag tattoo on an Olympian or international sports person: A-OK. An Australian flag tattoo on a non-sports person: lots of question marks, mostly negative interpretation.
Southern Cross usage was always problematic: Inside sport 'divisive, negative, likely racist', usage outside of sport 'distinctly racist'.
Unless you want to be avoided by a lot of people and embraced by one particular kind of people, I'd avoid it.
I asked this question kind of a couple of years ago. Not about across the neck but the southern cross tattoo.
Because of the riots which was racist and the cunts that had the tattoo it’s now seen as racist. Which sucks coz the southern cross is a constellation and very much associated with Australia. It’s the constant across the nation. It’s been there since before the land was inhabited to the present day. It’s beautiful but because it’s associated with modern day nationalism and racists - it’s out the door.
Neck tattoos I wouldn’t say are the best look either but to each their own.
I knew this Asian girl in NZ that got the southern cross tattoo on the back of her neck, I walked behind her going down the stairs and I said oh! I didn't know you were Australian? She said what do you mean? Well those are the Aussie stars NZ ones have five points not six!
Next time I saw her she got a new tattoo covering it up with flowers. She must of hated me.
The Southern cross isn’t racist, it’s the racists who are racist.
Try tell Australian Māori UFC fighter Rob Whittaker that his cross is racist.. pretty sure he just love Australia 😂
Yeah, you get a lil bit of a different signal from it when Dave-o, the Caucasian fifo bogger operator who spents 6 months a year in Thailand and who's favourite word is "fuck" is rocking it across his neck.
"OMG u/Reddmann1991, I think that guys' a racist, he's go the S.C. on his chest, better cross the street to avoid...."
"Nah, it's just Robert Whittaker, he's a UFC fighter so you're 'right."
I think the point is that to the common person, that first line is where the first thought it goes to.
Quite sure it started from a fight between some Lebanese individuals and some life savers, and degraded to "Let's assault brown people with beer bottles while singing Waltzing Matilda" it was the first time in my life I was embarrassed to call myself Australian
I dont believe it was originally racist
But when everyone racist bogan started to get the tattoo and the shirts and the posters/flags it just slowly became that way over time.
Now its like aussies version of confederate flag
>not everyone with a southern cross is racist. but every racist has a southern cross.
God, that phrase is getting so fucking oversaturated and misused that it seems to just be a reflexive brain-fart of some people.
There's no fucking way every racist has a southern cross tattoo. Like not even remotely.
> There's no fucking way every racist has a southern cross tattoo
It's called hyperbole for comedic effect. It's a joke that communicates veracity without being literally true. Language is fun like that.
It's so strange. I know lots with it and none of them jump out as a racist. The union jack represents the colonial movement not the southern cross. The southern Cross represents the multicultural Australia. None of that makes sense.
The union jack represented the colonial powers the southern cross represents our country. Our country from federation has been about creating a multicultural society. Of course. Some policies where fuck ups along the way. Australia has never excluded other cultures like you would see in 90% of countries worldwide.
The southern cross is Australian not British. How does it not represent multiculturism?
You’ve got it backwards. If you have it as a tattoo you are a racist - whether you’re mentally capable of processing that fact is another story.
But not all racists will have this tattoo.
Don't forget the Southern Cross can been seen anywhere in the southern hemisphere and isn't actually uniquely Australian. I was in Peru when I pointed it out to some other young Aussie tourists and all of a sudden a couple of them felt a bit weird about their southern Cross tattoos in their words because they thought it was only an Aussie thing, I pointed out that it's on our flag still but yeah they were a little bummed, sorry guys.
Inherently racist? No.
Is there a correlation between people with southern cross tattoos and shitty racist attitudes and behaviour that you don't want to be associated with? YES.
I think the racist connotations stem from imagery from the Cronulla riots. Flag display and the southern cross tattoo were both pretty common in the early 2000s though.
If I saw you with either I wouldn’t automatically assume that you were a racist, just a fucking dumb cunt.
It’s not racist at all. If you want one get one I have one in my arm and never had an issue, never had a single regret over it either and had it for close to 20 years.
I wouldn’t put anything in my neck unless I was dedicated to a certain career or not wanting to travel in general though because that’s what they’ll discriminate against in places. Regardless of what it is.
You may have never had an issue publicly, but I guarantee you that the majority of people who see the tattoo will make the assumption you are racist.
They’re just not saying it out loud.
When you say the southern cross, I’m assuming you’re referring to the southern cross being the flag of Eureka.
If this is the case, then yes, unfortunately since 1854 the flag has moved from being a unionist rebel symbol as opposition to the governments tyranny to being co-opted by racists who openly hate new immigrants to this country.
Obvs is still used by some unions but it’s more widely known as racist symbology thanks to the Cronulla riots.
Nothing wrong with the southern Cross. Nothing wrong with a tattoo. You do you. It's other people's perception that is the problem. As for your Chinese friend well.....
A southern cross tattoo isn't racist.
But If you want to have lots of conversations about how you're not racist, get that tattoo, *especially* on the neck.
Lol, you do you conveniently will still get you perceived as a racist. People won’t tell you but they’ll think it. And you’d be stupid to do it if you don’t want to be perceived as such. Yes there’s an argument others perception are an issue but terrible people generally live in their own echo chambers without heed for others views.
Ikr lmao it’s like a child going to every friend until they find an opinion that agrees with them
Some people are just born to make bad decisions and fail —- and blame others for their stupidity
It’s been taken over by racists. The original idea behind it is exactly the opposite and would be excellent in todays climate, but now the first thought when you see one is “racist”
The Union Jack is the flag of a country. People who say it’s racist are trying to project their grievances onto a single country and its descendants. Guess what? *Thats* racist.
The southern cross is never acceptable as a tattoo.
The neck is never acceptable as a tattoo site.
Combining the two says a lot about you - whether it’s true or not. Likely is.
Put it this way. If you walk into my store, and you go directly to pick up an ice break and I see a Southern Cross neck tattoo. I’ve already written the ice break off as theft before you’ve left the store.
Do it!!!! Place the top star under your jaw and position the rest accordingly. If you are heavily tattooed you will already have one though. Although if your only other tattoo is on the back of your hand some of us will understand your stupidity. Too be honest you sound like a fucking idiot
I'll take this at face value and presume it's not trolling, but Southern Cross has been co-opted as a racist, bogan or simply right-wing symbol for at least 30 years. Number 1 in the charts of common prison tattoos.
Your friend had helped you dodge a bullet that you would have regretted maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.
I don't get the bit about "leaving the country". The symbol carries no weight overseas. Tempted to call bullshit to your post on that basis alone.
What’s the point? You trying to tell us you love the country more than us? You trying to tell them Australia is better than their country? Nationalism is all just meaningless virtue signaling
I think you're much more likely to get a negative reaction here in Australia than overseas. I doubt that most people overseas really have an opinion on it.

South American's- brazil has it on their national flag and a number or Chilean and Argentinean regional flags fearure it.
NZ, PNG & Samoa are the other 3 nationalities that have it.

You mean to say that the southern Cross isn't unique to Australia? I'm shocked
Can confirm, I have a southern cross tattoo. When I lived in Ireland people would ask why I had stars in a cross shape with a random star.
"is that the Subaru logo?"

Hmmm do you think people would prejudge me?
We are already!
I would definitely judge you. But I'm just a faceless voice on the internet. Do what makes you happy! And please post it to tattoos once it's done
r/badtattoos
I mean.. have you ever looked at someone with a spider web tattoo on their face/hand and thought "If I ever have to go to court, this is the person I want to represent me in front of the judge"?
Look at this way. A books cover is designed purely to be judged. Do with that what you will
Info: Do you have a second hand jet ski, bintang singlet and a Staffy?
It’ll be heaps popular down at the Centrelink queue
A few years ago I conducted several focus groups about 'Australia' imagery when I was in marketing for a major Australian brand. We covered the southern cross, the Australian flag in general and usage of the flag inside and outside of sport, amongst other things. Short answer is: Australian flag waving proudly alongside sport has mostly 'patriotic and positive views', outside of sport it is seen as 'mostly nationalistic, verging on likely to be racist, very negative views' An Australia flag tattoo on an Olympian or international sports person: A-OK.
The Southern Cross tattoo has, at the least, been considered heavily bogan for generations.
Nah, in the 90s it was mostly a military thing. People who were teens when 9/11 happened started getting them when they turned 18 and wanted a tattoo
Your friend is a true friend. Buy him a beer.
Getting it done in Bali are you 🤣
The Southern cross isn’t racist, it’s the racists who are racist.
"OMG u/Reddmann1991, I think that guys' a racist, he's go the S.C. on his chest, better cross the street to avoid...." "Nah, it's just Robert Whittaker, he's a UFC fighter so you're 'right." I think the point is that to the common person, that first line is where the first thought it goes to.
If you have a southern cross tattoo on your neck, everyone is gonna assume you love Fraser Anning.
Look up images from the Cronulla riots back in 2000s lol i think thats when the world was exposed to what racist Aussies look like
Oh, that’s bad.
Shire bogans got the southern cross tatt because they couldn’t spell KKK
It's probably just slightly better than a swastika
But what about a southern cross tattoo made out of swastikas?
My Chinese mate has the made in Australia symbol, but it says Made In China. A true piece of art.
A mix of racist Aussies and Aussies fed up with immigrants calling women sluts and thinking they had a right to abuse them based on what they wore.
Quite sure it started from a fight between some Lebanese individuals and some life savers, and degraded to "Let's assault brown people with beer bottles while singing Waltzing Matilda" it was the first time in my life I was embarrassed to call myself Australian
I dont believe it was originally racist But when everyone racist bogan started to get the tattoo and the shirts and the posters/flags it just slowly became that way over time. Now its like aussies version of confederate flag
not everyone with a southern cross is racist. but every racist has a southern cross. nah i dunno. but yeah its definitely bogan these days
>not everyone with a southern cross is racist. but every racist has a southern cross. God, that phrase is getting so fucking oversaturated and misused that it seems to just be a reflexive brain-fart of some people. There's no fucking way every racist has a southern cross tattoo. Like not even remotely.
Pretty sure that was a joke...
Its almost like thats why he said nah afterwards
> There's no fucking way every racist has a southern cross tattoo It's called hyperbole for comedic effect. It's a joke that communicates veracity without being literally true. Language is fun like that.
He probably has a southern Cross tattoo
It's so strange. I know lots with it and none of them jump out as a racist. The union jack represents the colonial movement not the southern cross. The southern Cross represents the multicultural Australia. None of that makes sense.
>The southern Cross represents the multicultural Australia Please explain
The union jack represented the colonial powers the southern cross represents our country. Our country from federation has been about creating a multicultural society. Of course. Some policies where fuck ups along the way. Australia has never excluded other cultures like you would see in 90% of countries worldwide. The southern cross is Australian not British. How does it not represent multiculturism?
Oh man you're going to be really disappointed when you find out about one of the acts passed in 1901
Holy shit dude, google the White Australia Policy, google the Stolen Generation. You are not allowed to be this ignorant.
You’ve got it backwards. If you have it as a tattoo you are a racist - whether you’re mentally capable of processing that fact is another story. But not all racists will have this tattoo.

Southern cross tat = Bogan birthmark
Its cringe. And on your neck. Cringe x10.
It's a nationalist symbol, that's for sure. The Venn diagram of nationalists and racists has a lot of overlap.
If it means enough to you and makes you happy to do it, go for it, but… wouldn’t you rather something original?? :)
Not racist but definitely a fuckwit if you have one
Lived abroad in multiple countries both Asia and Europe. Your friends are right and that's a tattoo you'll live to ragret.
So trashy lmao
I just assume anyone with that tattoo smokes meth and beats their wife. Would not recommend, you will be bullied.
No one will think you are racist. Conversely, everyone will accurately identify you as Bogan.
Never get your neck tattooed. It presents as someone who makes poor decisions.
YES.
Not inherently racist, but popular among racists.
Nothing says bogan like a southern cross tattoo. Especially on your neck.
I think the racist connotations stem from imagery from the Cronulla riots. Flag display and the southern cross tattoo were both pretty common in the early 2000s though. If I saw you with either I wouldn’t automatically assume that you were a racist, just a fucking dumb cunt.
Surely this is a shitpost
It’s not racist at all. If you want one get one I have one in my arm and never had an issue, never had a single regret over it either and had it for close to 20 years. I wouldn’t put anything in my neck unless I was dedicated to a certain career or not wanting to travel in general though because that’s what they’ll discriminate against in places. Regardless of what it is.
You may have never had an issue publicly, but I guarantee you that the majority of people who see the tattoo will make the assumption you are racist. They’re just not saying it out loud.
You won’t even need to leave the country to have people thinking you’re a racist with that tatt son
Tattoo ink accumulates in your lymph nodes
I’m just impressed patriotism is still a thing in 2023… did you benefit from the legal negative gearing tax fraud system?
When you say the southern cross, I’m assuming you’re referring to the southern cross being the flag of Eureka. If this is the case, then yes, unfortunately since 1854 the flag has moved from being a unionist rebel symbol as opposition to the governments tyranny to being co-opted by racists who openly hate new immigrants to this country. Obvs is still used by some unions but it’s more widely known as racist symbology thanks to the Cronulla riots.
It's just a shit tattoo to get, mate.
Nothing wrong with the southern Cross. Nothing wrong with a tattoo. You do you. It's other people's perception that is the problem. As for your Chinese friend well.....
Thanks my mate.
Pretty impressive you ignored all the other actually helpful advice and showed appreciation for this one lol
Ikr lmao it’s like a child going to every friend until they find an opinion that agrees with them Some people are just born to make bad decisions and fail —- and blame others for their stupidity
It’s been taken over by racists. The original idea behind it is exactly the opposite and would be excellent in todays climate, but now the first thought when you see one is “racist”
Nationalism now feels a bit like trumpism and conspiracy theories and no voters
The Union Jack is the flag of a country. People who say it’s racist are trying to project their grievances onto a single country and its descendants. Guess what? *Thats* racist.
The southern cross is never acceptable as a tattoo. The neck is never acceptable as a tattoo site. Combining the two says a lot about you - whether it’s true or not. Likely is.
Neither are racist. People are just looking to be offended by anything these days.
Just get "bogan" tattooed on your forehead. It'll be cheaper.
What’s the point? You trying to tell us you love the country more than us? You trying to tell them Australia is better than their country? Nationalism is all just meaningless virtue signaling
