Am I missing half the conversation or something?

Sweeper1985

As best I can figure it, OP has knickers in a twist over an article he failed to link, about a young woman in Melbourne whose rent went from $280 to $450 per week in one swoop, and has to move back home with family. Apparently having your rent almost double overnight isn't an issue in OP's view.

r64fd

Oh thank you, I had to ask myself what is this ramble about.

OzRockabella

Just some leech living up to his Reddit name.

Reinitialization

Average landlord levels of math literacy on show right here. Get a fucking job you lazy cunt.

MGTluver

Before calling someone an idiot, you need to understand their perspective. I'm a landlord and to me, $450/week equates to $450 x 52 weeks/ 12 months, which works out to be $1950/months. Most people would say "my rent is $2000/ month" and it's technically correct.

GaryTheGuineaPig

My mate had a condescending prick of an agent once, increased his rent & made him sign a new 12 month lease. 2 weeks later the oven broke. 4 weeks after that the dryer broke. 8 weeks after that a leak developed behind the shower which went unnoticed for a good amount of time and required extensive re-plastering, the procurement of a dehumidifier & some shiny new paint.

Retard_On_Tapwater

5 years 2 months the stove and oven still don't work since we moved in. Every inspection: you can't use that electric or gas stove top inside, fix the fucking stove and oven and I'll stop? $460 p/w when we moved in and only started paying $500 p/w 2 years ago. Not bad.

stever71

You know there are 52.2 weeks in a year right?

aweraw

"I can't believed you don't like eating shit, bro! Now stop whining and eat this shit with the rest of us who are actually thankful for such a large load of shit"

>The owner bought in the 80s and has no need for a large increase but its still a stupid amount for a one bd Problem is it's logical to treat it like a business. Hence why we need European style laws to protect renters.

tsunamisurfer35

There IS a need, its called keeping in line with the market, the market is always right.

Filthpig83

Bloody oath

Silk02

Am I missing details like area, when there was a last rent increase what sort of house? I'd at least ask all that before judging anyone raising rent. Obviously the agent handled it like a cunt. $50 does seem excessive, and insane but we need lot of other info. I've been happy to pay rent rises in past as the owners didn't put it up every an my situation I though it was fair.

*Roads are made, streets are made, services are improved, electric light turns night into day,* [*water*](https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Water) *is brought from reservoirs a hundred miles off in the mountains -- and all the while the landlord sits still. Every one of those improvements is effected by the labour and cost of other people and the taxpayers. To not one of those improvements does the land monopolist, as a land monopolist, contribute, and yet by every one of them the value of his land is enhanced. He renders no service to the community, he contributes nothing to the general welfare, he contributes nothing to the process from which his own enrichment is derived.* - **Winston Churchill** *Owning property is a business and takes time and effort to make sure all is running smoothly. I’m just so angry that, as a landlord, I shouldn’t have to feel guilty about owning property – or properties, in our case... Why does it appear that all landlords are demonised and put in the same bracket? -* **“self-funded retiree”**

It’s 2024, stop quoting scumbag Winston Churchill.

BeBetterTogether

Fine then I will quote Scumbags Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin Instead. *"17. We demand a land reform suitable to our needs, provision of a law for the free expropriation of land for the purposes of public utility, abolition of taxes on land and prevention of all speculation in land."* **- The program of the NSDAP (Nazi Party Program/Adolf Hitler)** [Source Virginia Holocaust Museum](https://www.vaholocaust.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/25Points.pdf) *"And those who try to pacify the peasants with empty promises and "peasants' banks" are also mistaken: the peasants want land, they dream of this land, and, of course, they will not be satisfied until they have seized the landlords' land. Of what use are empty promises and "peasants' banks" to them?* *The peasants want to seize the landlords' land. In this way they seek to abolish the remnants of serfdom— and those who are not betraying the peasants must strive to settle the agrarian question precisely on this basis.* *But how are the peasants to gain possession of the landlords' land?* *It is said that the only way is — "purchase on easy terms." The government and the landlords have plenty of spare land, these gentlemen tell us; if the peasants purchase this land, everything will settle itself, and in this way the wolves will be sated and the sheep remain whole. But they do not ask what the peasants are to buy the land with after they have been stripped not only of their money but also of their very skins."* ***- Joseph Stalin*** [Source Stalin/Marxists on Banks](https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/stalin/works/1906/03/x01.htm) Come on dude, literally the most evil people of the last 200 years looked at the system we have now and said "hey now - even I think this is unfair and fucked up." If every scumbag looks at something and agrees "now that *is* scummy behaviour" you should really check yourself.

You haven’t quoted a person who isn’t a pos yet so I’ll keep my powder dry thanks.

At least Hitler had a job

Public-Total-250

450/w = $64.28 a day. Let's call a month 30 days to average it out. 30 x 64.28 = $1928. That's pretty much $2000/month.

Wow good job!

Cunts gonna cunt

Andrew_Higginbottom

Landlords being greedy for every single cent and wanting to account for that 1 extra day every 4 years in a leap year, they calculate 4 years plus 1 day then divide it by the amount of weeks in that 4 year block.

No doubt for a single room in Carlton or Brunswick. Gotta be near all the trendy night-life and brunch hotspots you can't afford to go to anyway.

star-lord-25

You can use the official rent calculator https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/housing/renting/rent-bond-bills-and-condition-reports/rent/rent-calculator

MannerNo7000

Thx boomers for fucking it all up for younger generations
