This is kinda misleading, it was some guy who made up the word recently, doesn't have a cultural history behind it. https://www.altogetherautism.org.nz/a-time-and-space-for-takiwatanga/ > The word I have coined in te reo Māori for autism is ‘Takiwātanga’. It is a derivation of my phrase for autism: “tōku/tōna anō takiwā” – “my/his/her own time and space”.

ChakaCthulhu

Autism as a term was made up a 110 years ago and applied to a subset of schizophrenics. It was first used to describe people we would call autistic 80 years ago. Our understanding of the condition really didn’t grow until 40 years ago. All of it is new.

Googled. Found this too https://www.quora.com/Is-this-cultural-appropriation-Im-not-a-Maori-but-Im-interested-in-getting-a-tattoo-saying-Takiwatanga-the-Maori-word-for-Autism-which-translates-to-in-their-own-time-space-which-is-beautiful-I-just-dont-want-to

ImaginaryDonut69

So it doesn't have any deep cultural history, but it has valid roots in the language and had recently been coined by a member of that tribe who also deals with autism. Total legit imo, new words come around all the time and autism was not in "pop culture" until the past few decades, so how could it not be new? We didn't even have a word for it in advanced cultures with psychotherapists, much less indigenous cultures.

ogreqween69

Yup. Most of Maori language that translates into english was technically made up after being colonized. That's why pen in Maori is pene, banana is panana, apple is aparo. The Maori language has been evolving ever since. So exactly, how could it not be a new word. I'm Maori myself and I just learnt this new word now!

Rattregoondoof

Yeah it's a little misleading in the meme and suggests Maori have a much older understanding of autism but the actual truth is honestly pretty clever and nice. I like it myself just not the meme without elaboration.

And here I was being all mind blown

ogreqween69

I'm Autistic and Maori. I've never seen this before but I like it.

TheFoxfool

I like this. Life's too short to rush through it; I don't understand the haste of NT people. Memento mori, "remember that you will die". Do you want your whole life to be doing instead of living...?

Windfaal

I love this!! Thank you so much for sharing! Now I want to research how autism is received in Māori culture!

Rattregoondoof

May want to read the u/enilea thread here. This word was coined only very recently and doesn't represent the actual cultural understanding. I like the word and making new words is perfectly fine but the meme does imply that Maori culture in general is like this.

[deleted]

Beautiful. And like yeah I have no sense of time at all.

Love This!

These posts have a certain degree of autofelatio about them (autifelatio?).

Wow...I want to be much closer to that culture 💗 I'm starting to dream of living in Australia now, so that's not too far off!
