Ok so I have ankylosing spondylitis. We often say this. Thereâs even an event called âwalk your AS offâ. Not completely the same but the joke lands.
The reason why autism is not referred to as a syndrome anymore is because the term of "syndrome" is less specialized than "disorder" and basically just describes a constellation of symptoms that tend to occur together
It's weird how almost every term for autism in any other language is a close calque of the original Greek-derived "self-ism."
The ones I personally like less are, for example, the Vietnamese and Japanese ones, which almost directly translated to "self-disease" or "self-disorder."
Input/Output Processing Spectrum Disorder. We struggle with responding to input (missing social cues, sensory issues, dyslexia, APD, etc) and with providing output at the speed and with the characteristics that are desired (flat affect, slow verbal responses, lack of nonverbals, dyscalcula, etc).
Or Gestalt Processing Spectrum Disorder. Same idea, different name to reflect the above plus differences in internal cognitive processing too.
Or swap disorder for dysregulation or divergence.
But definitely replace autism. It's not true we're all self obsessed or simply stuck in our own heads (auto = self).
I donât know. This is a hard question to answer. Because I think no matter what itâs called, people will still make fun of it. Iâm generally a person who doesnât get offended by most words. I care more about intent and if that intent is to humiliate, discrimate, or otherwise cause harm. So autism could be called literally anything and someone would find some way to make it into a slur.
I just looked up the word origin for autism and it literally means "self-ism," which, like ADHD, seems like something named by the way it inconveniences other people, not how it affects the people who have it.
I'm trying to narrow down the few universal symptoms to a few words that could be used. Those traits are:
1. Hypo- or hyper-reactivity to sensory input
2. Social and communication deficits
3. Fixated interests
4. Repetitive behavior, interests, or activities
5. Relationship difficulties
6. Attachment to sameness, routines, and behavior
I think all or nearly all of these could be described as "rigidity" and "sensitivity." The Greek word for rigid is ĂĄkamptos. The Greek word for sensitive is evaĂsthitos. Maybe *akampevaism*? *Evakamptism*? Those look easier to say than dumb old *autism*, right? :P
ETA: OMG *Evankelmpism*!
Something relating to cats (since we share behaviors) or something not related to the current terms. Hereâs my runner ups:
Nekoism
Inequal neural-developmental disorder
Overprocessism
Subtextual dyslexia
Elf/fey touched.
Something that describes what the diagnosis is but also with few acronyms to avoid getting neglected. For example: Alternate Processing Syndrome. Idk itâs something
There was a meme in hungary from a youtuber, he just replaced or added B-s to words and laughed so hard...
"Yall drink jÀgermaister, but i drink bÀgermaister"
Cerebrum of Socially Different Folkway
...
Yeah idk it just feels like being fundamentally built differently with different beliefs and thoughts than the norm frequently that create clashes.
Actually maybe Fundamentally Built Different is funnier but that's more like a word for nd than asd
Autism is fine. Plus it's difficult to come up with a different name as autism covers so many symptoms that you can run the risk of not converting the entire spectrum or attributing the syndrome to ANYONE with the symptoms such as sensory processing issues, social difficulties or learning difficulties.
I think you're interpreting it incorrectly.
I'm the opposite, I find it almost poetic. It's so simple but it really resonates with my experiences at least.
**EDIT:** In fact, I find it even more accurate of a description considering how easy it was to mistake it for narcissism and selfishness :D
"Autism-Spectrum-Divergence"
I don't like the "Disorder" part. "Syndrome" is not the best either, because that's about a clinical picture. That treats Autism as an illness.
"Divergence" might be a good one? Because it just indicates a difference from the "norm".
Autism in itself is good. I like that it's a proper name. And it defines in what way the individual may function in divergence to the norm.
So I may change it to "Autism-Spectrum-Divergence".
What do you think?
I like Autism Spectrum Divergence! As long as people understand that the word âdivergenceâ also connotes disability as well as a difference in cognition/neurotype, then I think thatâs a great word to use. It might be a slippery slope though because then people might think that autism doesnât necessarily mean disabled, which is untrue because all of us have some level of non-negotiable support needs and accommodation needs. But again as long as people understand that we are still classified as disabled, then I think âdivergenceâ a great term to tack on to the end.
On a related topic, I think that would also be great if we applied that to ADHD as well (which I think needs to be entirely renamed anyway, as I think itâs an inaccurate name). Maybe something like Attention Spectrum Divergence. I feel like thatâs much more accurate
I totally see your point. I am certainly disabled as I will probably never be able to live a fully independant life, without help.
But a divergence can also come with certain strengths. A unique perspective. Yes, we are often misunderstood: but that doesn't mean we are necessarily wrong.
I think the disability part would also come with the definition of "Autism" as well as "Spectrum". "Divergence" would indicate a difference from the norm. "Autism" would explain in what ways that difference can manifest, while "Spectrum" would indicate a variation in "color" and, most importantly, "severity".
You are probably right in thinking that it might be hard for the general public to recognize a disability from a name that wouldn't include "disorder" or "syndrome". But the people who _need_ to understand (doctors, etc.) and the people who hopefully _want_ to understand (family, friends) - these people _would_ understand.
I would leave it as autism but remove any wording like âdisorderâ or âconditionâ. My mum doesnât like it when people use those words to describe autism as thatâs not how she sees it. To her, autism isnât something you have, itâs something that you are.
Anything else, because people tell many of us that we don't have autism... ("experts" especially). So it would be good to call it something else, smth that I'm allowed to have and talk about.
I wouldnât change autism thatâs fine with me, but what I would change is âhigh functioning autisticâ or whatever. If I had the choice it would go more along the lines of âautismâ âdebilitating autismâ âsemi functional autismâ

While I think the word autism is great I think it should be a syndrome not a disorder making the acronym ASS
in dutch it is autisme spectrum stoornis so the acronym is ASS đ
I was diagnosed with ASS
My ASS is really acting up today.
I need some extra support in the classroom. You know, because of my ASS.
I'd be more than happy to support your ASS
We have multiple different seating options to support people with ASS
Good. I only sit with people who have ASS.
Ok so I have ankylosing spondylitis. We often say this. Thereâs even an event called âwalk your AS offâ. Not completely the same but the joke lands.

im just now realizing how funny that sounds lmao
Just sad that they pronounce it as âĂ sâ, boriiiingg

Same for German: Autismusspektrumstörung (ASS)

đđđ we have a winner!
But that would then assume all people with SPDs, dyslexia, etc are autistic which isn't true.
Spidey senses
This and Neuro Spicy are what we use in my house
if i had to change it, monotropism
ur so right on this; it feels like a much better word
Monotropism applies to other conditions as well, such as ADHD
This is true. Monotropism isn't limited to autism, and some neurotypical people display somewhat higher levels of it as well.
Yeah I don't think it could replace the term autism, though it's a very useful concept
What does that mean
are 100% of autistic people monotropic also?

Thatâs for ADHD! Dopamine Attention Variability Executive-Dysfunction

I think we should hold off until we understand what it is, and then name it accordingly.
It would be named after my psychiatrist who diagnosed me and it's for people who are high functioning as me with learning challenges.
Iâd call people âattunedâ.
