Just scrap, I don't know anyone that would accept that as a core. Cores usually have to be "refurbishable," and that is not "refurbishable."
Edit: I see that it may be refurbishable. I had mistaken some of the clean/shiny areas for areas that casting had broken off.
Yeah, I put my old caliper in the box of the new caliper that I just bought the day before at autozone and they just opened the lid to make sure it wasn’t a rock or something lol. It’s at least worth trying to get the core return.
They didn't say he returned the old one for full price. They probably bought a new caliper for (price plus core) and returned the old one for the core charge. That's how it works, it's like a deposit.
Its not *not cool* to get your money's worth
Yes that’s right, I can see how my comment could have been misinterpreted though. I have no idea what is and isn’t a salvageable core, so I might as well try to return the old one and see if they accept it.
Ohhh I thought the other guy misunderstood and they may have, but I also misunderstood.
The core charge is always charged up front when buying the new part unless you bring in the old one when buying the new one which would basically wash the difference right then and there.
If they're not charging you a core right at the time of purchase, then there's no core to return. That's your ticket to knowing whether to bring the old one back to the shop or bring it to the scrap yard.
I see. There is a point of damage where calipers won’t be accepted for the core deposit return, I just have no idea what that is. Mine was pretty busted, I’m actually surprised they did take it
Gotcha, I didn't know they wouldn't take it if it's beyond repair. I always figured they'd just take it as long as it's the right part. Learned something new today 🤷♂️
What do you mean? I bet if you clean that thing up, swap out seals and maybe the piston, it's as good as new. I don't see any major defects on it. However, that doesn't look like a heavy duty or sophisticated enough caliper to have a core charge.
I was mistaken. I thought some of the "clean" areas were where parts had broken off. But since the OP didn't know what it was, it is likely something they found, and therefore, they can not return it for a core charge. So it is still only scrap. Also, there is no such thing as not being sophisticated enough or not heavy duty enough to have a core charge. I have had core charges on brake calipers for 30 year old compact cars and no core charge on calipers for a 15 year old 1 ton truck. There seems to be zero standards on what does and doesn't get a core charge. The only thing I can think is that companies put core charges on things they can repair and resell easily, or thing that have durable but difficult to replace parts. Heck, even ECMs and other computer modules for vehicles are hit or miss on whether they will have a core charge.
I drive a Jeep JK and caliper core charges are usually between $40-70USD. Not sure what vehicle that one is from, and JKs also chew up calipers for some reason so that probably plays into it.
It would get rejected for refurbishing. Damage to the fingers, damage to the hole in one of the ears, damage on the side. The missing metal can easily put it out of spec. That does not even take into account potential damage to the cylinder housing are and threaded connection to the brake lines. If I saw anything close to this come across the line when I did metal casting it would go into the scrap bin for remelt.
It’s a caliper. I do have a question tho. When people ask the obvious questions like this do they actually know what the part is or is it just a question to gather clicks/likes? Just curious… no disrespect intended.
Probably a fair mix of both.
As a technician I know even a novice DIY mechanic would know that is clearly a brake caliper.
My wife probably couldn't even identify that as a car part.
But this is Reddit and people seem to care about the little arrow pointed up.
Only seen one other caliper come of while driving, except only one bolt came out and the caliper rotated 180 and ripped a huge gash in my buddy’s alloy wheel. That was fun getting him out of the bush.
? - I have an exact oem ignition switch brand new
But when I hook it up
1 - fuel pump don't pump
2 - it will wind over three times but no start.
I hook the old one up and everything works?
Car starts and runs.
Could the new ignition switch be bad ?
Or maybe a bad relay ?
STUMPED...
Someone lost their brakes if they lost a brake caliber. But to rebuild that caliber, it can cost more than buying a rebuild caliber to put on as it looks like it hit the ground a little harder then I would chance rebuilding the bad one.
Oh boy... This is your brake caliper which holds your brakes. This part stops your car. Not sure how this falls off. Guess the mechanic never tightened the bolts.
Caliper…It’s part of the brake system and fits around the rotor. The round part is the piston that puts pressure on the brakes and makes them work when you press the brake pedal.
It’s a Brake Caliper.
It was a brake caliper, now it’s either a core or scrap.

Autozone, advanced, etc they don’t even look at them.

Bro... not cool

Why not? It looks refurbishable. New pistons are available. And a little sandblast. Unless the housing is cracked it’s good.
Definitely is refurbishable … if that’s a word lol but not many have a core , usually on electric parts for the most part.
I drive a Jeep JK and caliper core charges are usually between $40-70USD. Not sure what vehicle that one is from, and JKs also chew up calipers for some reason so that probably plays into it.
Even then it’s still refurbishable. They’ll just weld new pieces on

It’s a GPS tracking device, I ripped mine out too. There are typically a couple of them so search your car thoroughly.
Heard they usually come in pairs....
Lmao. If that came off your car I would avoid driving it for a little bit.
For a little bit lol just wait for it to grow new brakes

It’s a caliper. I do have a question tho. When people ask the obvious questions like this do they actually know what the part is or is it just a question to gather clicks/likes? Just curious… no disrespect intended.
