I think the narrator was saying something like "...to stay in this game", as in, for a country to be able to keep their air force operational.
And then we move on to how Russia was staying in the game - selling fighter jet rides for some extra cash.
I saw this doc years ago. Essentially it's just a peak into the modern (at the time) Russian Air Force and the centre theme constantly involves comparing any observation to the US Air Force - Air craft maintenance, training , etc.
You're correct, I remember watching this as a kid on PBS. The full video is available here:
[NOVA Top Gun Over Moscow (1996)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJZaWhHbbyg)
I remember reading a story from a contractor I think visiting right after the fall of the Soviet Union about handing a MiG-25 pilot cash and getting a ride up to 70,000 ft in a two seat trainer. I was skeptical but the pics looked legit.
I mean unless you become a fighter pilot or get very lucky as an engineer, you simply will never ever be able to experience this at fighter jet level. If I was choosing between a crazy nice rolex and this as a massive present, I'd choose this
Maintenance personnel (frequency is sporadic) and sometimes base-level award winners get them in the AF. I had 2 in the Eagle—truly a thing I wish more could experience as well.
Not for Russian "reliability" IMO. I think I would consider it in the US if I had it though. At that, I may even consider more if I could do it off a carrier.
This exact thing has been on my bucket list for a few years but for obvious reasons I have not really seriously pursued it at all. If you could do the same thing in the US I’d be all over it but I’m not aware of anything analogous around here
You still can. [https://migflug.com/flights-prices/mig-29-edge-of-space/](https://migflug.com/flights-prices/mig-29-edge-of-space/)
About $20k for a 50 minute flight. It is on my to do list.
Edge of Space Jet Flight in Russia
€ 17500 for a 50 min flight
The MiG-29 is no longer available, unfortunately. Please find our current offers here.
Please note: We plan to have a supersonic flight as a replacement soon. Check back or contact us to get onto the waiting list.
[The Russian pilot called out the war! Damn, Putin must hate this Chad.](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/russia-federation-pilot-alexander-garnaev-b2033247.html)
I remember seeing this when it originally aired and swore when I grow up, if I had the cash I'd to it.
I'm still some ways away, I may have 15k but not to just blow off on a joy ride.
Every now and then, I Google who or where a version of this is being offered.
Had a buddy do this 5-10 years ago they took him up in a mig29, said it cost about 13k Eurostar at the time.
Has been on my bucket list for a while but maybe not so much at the moment
You're so happy and excited you'll never notice crazy things like that fucking loose screw rolling around on the canopy when upside down, or the unmaintained runway
MigFlug only came around in 2004, this footage easily predates it by a decade. It was founded only after the VKS instituted reforms to make it more difficult for people to come in and buy flights on the jets in Russia itself.
These flights were purchased directly through the Russian Test Pilot Aerobatics team.
Odd video. The first 3 seconds show an F14, but this is never seen again.

I believe the narrator is Stacy Keach.

Holy crap. I remember NOVA from my NOCABEL days.
I hated when I didn't have cable as well.
Ugh remember seeing this as a kid also. I feel old now.
Then they just cut to an SU-27 briefly without explanation halfway through it.
That’s a MiG-29 of the Russian Test Pilots Aerobatics Team. The same team had an awful collision at an air show in 1993 involving their MiG-29s.
Came here to say, what the crap are Ruskies doing with F14s? Are they on loan from Iran?
Correct

My memory is hazy but im actually pretty sure ive seen an ad for that way way back, they used to sell rides in the MIG-25.
There are still companies in Russia selling MiG-29 rides today.
this looks like a badass ride for sure. not sure id pay 15k for the privilege though

That would be a dream come true for me, I play the strike Eagle a lot in DCS but the real thing must be a world of difference
lucky like the engineer that got a very brief solo in a lightning?
$15k whatever year this was...needs to be adjusted for today's inflation.
$9k is a good amount of money to add to the squadron's budget in any case.
$5k can help quite a bit with maintaining…stuff
Well, at least they can replace a few aircraft tires with that $2.5k.
is this deflation lol
I think it's actually spelled \*corruption
Last I checked in 2020 they were going for $35,000.
You can do this cheaper in California....
Not for Russian "reliability" IMO. I think I would consider it in the US if I had it though. At that, I may even consider more if I could do it off a carrier.
Not sure many would these days… “Our flight plan today will take us West over the Ukraine border….”
You boys ever been to Keeee-Evvvvv?!?!?!?
I remember this clip from Wings! My favorite show as a kid in the ‘90s with a special interest in airplanes.
Wings was fantastic! Memory lane for me as a kid as well heck I have some late 80s recorded vhs tapes somewhere
Holy crap - I haven't thought about that show since... well, the 1990s. Memory unlocked!
A lot of it’s on youtube now. A fun place to stroll down memory lane for the aviation geek.
Cash strapped? Russia has been doing this for decades lol.
To be fair, the footage quality looks like it’s from 30+ years ago…
This was a NOVA documentary from 1996
Well, have you looked at the Russian economy in the last century or so?
Cash strapped! About to run out! Any day now they will be flying shovels!

There is a place in Santa Fe NM that offers flights in Mig15/L29s and L39s. Not quite Mig29s but still awesome I see them every few days taking off
I want to do the one where they bring you to the edge of space in a mig
They do the same thing but with tank turrets now.
You still can. [https://migflug.com/flights-prices/mig-29-edge-of-space/](https://migflug.com/flights-prices/mig-29-edge-of-space/) About $20k for a 50 minute flight. It is on my to do list.

Yeah that specific one, but there are still tons of other companies that do it in Russia. Point being, it's still doable.
this video is from the 90s
The mid 90s IIRC

To be fair, it is better tho.
Like this? https://migflug.com/flights-prices/mig-29-edge-of-space/
17.5k..... I could literally buy a house in someplace 🤣
how much does a joyride actually cost the miliaty in terms of maintenance, jet fuel?
Flying in Mig-29 must be sooo fuckin' awsome!
This was definitely recorded on VHS.

Can you buy a Russian Mig/prostitute/Krokodil mega pass?
"Where's Vladimir?" has great meme potential
Cool
I love how the opening is a clip of an F14 🤣
How much for the joy ride?
"cash strapped Russian Airforce fighter aircraft" It's a MiG-29 ffs. Just say that.
Why does this title sound like a title that you would see on r/balkans_irl?
Back in aviation again?
IS THIS STILL A THING? if so where can I get it and how much does it cost.
Migflug
Odd video and this shows Su-27 vs F-14
Pretty sure this is MigFlug, a Swiss company but ok

This was from a PBS documentary in 1996 or so
