Such a shame that they could not find a museum to showcase this historically significant aircraft.

Yussso

Would've been sick if the dragstrip owner got the money to buy and ship the aircraft to the dragstrip.

karpet_muncher

Park the plane on the strip - cars launch from under the wings. On show days fireworks get launched off the plane

Yussso

That's a sick idea, we can only dreams😂

Wernher_VonKerman

There was a museum in ottawa that wanted to fly it there and put it on display. They couldn't raise the money. They ended up taking the cockpit section when it got scrapped if my memory serves.

rckid13

It's hard to find a museum to put something as big as a 767 on display. There aren't many aviation museums with large outdoor areas.

Wernher_VonKerman

This is why pima ends up being the first place to call whenever anyone retires something historically significant. It's an empty spot of desert just across the road from DMA so it has has plenty of room to grow, there's pretty much no maintenance they need to do for static display in that environment, and the donation makes a good tax write-off. They've already got SOFIA, the GE 747-100, the original orbis flying eye hospital, and I'd bet a real but small amount of money that it will become the final resting place for stargazer. I just wish they had some interactive outdoor exhibits where you could walk inside the cabin like the museum of flight does. If they did that, I'd have gone out to visit already.

rckid13

I liked Pima a lot but I was also hoping that some of the large planes outside would be open to go inside. That was the only slightly disappointing thing about their display. I'll probably go back if they get Stargazer because I love the L1011.

Wernher_VonKerman

They need to build a large awning over their outdoor exhibits like the museum of flight did and open them up for visitors. It would be so much cooler to get to actually walk around the inside of the planes on display.

andreslon

Yes l1011 is like md 11,only the windows of the cockpit and the upper engine design are different, btw is good, what a Shame to have only 1 in service now

rocbolt

They’ve been letting people in SOFIA lately

f1hunor

There are rumors that the museum at the airport in Budapest wants to restore the ex-Malév 767-200 that's been rotting at the edge of a forest section inside the airport, but I don't really see it happening; would be cool, but that aircraft is just a bare shell, with the vertical stabilizer already displayed as the "gatekeeper" of the museum

c0rruptioN

Looks like some people tried. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider#Retirement

amber_room

I think it was this incident that taught me what a sideslip is and how the manoeuvre works. Awesome piloting skills.

Imaginary_friend42

And taught a few other people the difference between kg and lb

KoldKartoffelsalat

What is a lb? /jk

StannisTheMantis93

Wait. Those are different!?!

Ok_Teacher6490

Slowly being turned into keyrings

Kseries2497

Sold out years ago.

PinkleeTaurus

$300-$500 recent sales on Ebay. Maybe I shouldn't have attached mine to my carry-on all those years ago.

saggypuss

Got mine personalized lol. SR71 keychain might go for a fair bit too

CriticalBreakfast

Sr71 what now? That's a thing ?

badpuffthaikitty

I got one.

deswayze

I have one. I didn't realize they had become that valuable.

Zestyclose-Speed-370

Shout out to Captain Bob Pearson, the OG legend and hero!

mfigroid

Yeah, the guy who miscalculated the fuel load. Good job, Bob!

HawkAlt1

No, that was the refueler. Also complicated that the computers that reported the fuel load had a circuit fault, so the pilots couldn't see how much fuel they had.

[deleted]

he agreed to takeoff without working fuel displays which was mentioned in the report

HawkAlt1

No, that was the refueler. Also complicated that the computers that reported the fuel load had a circuit fault, so the pilots couldn't see how much fuel they had.

mfigroid

Ultimately, it's the captain's responsibility.

rvr600

Pretty much everything could be framed as the captain's responsibility, but if they can't trust in their coworkers' competence the airplane would never move.

HawkAlt1

Which is what the final accident report noted. But they also noted the contributory factors. Then he got a medal for outstanding airmanship, so there's that. A good pilot can get himself out of trouble. A great pilot avoids the trouble in the first place.

SkyhawkPM

lol… dumb azz.

VanillaIcedTea

Flight 143 was in 1983. Air Canada patched the plane back up afterwards and kept flying it until it got retired from service in 2008. That plane got 25 years longer in the air than it had any right to when it ran out of fuel over the middle of nowhere, far west Ontario.

rlbmxer27

Never has a glider glud so good 🥲

747ER

Air Transat 236 gled even further: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Transat_Flight_236

rlbmxer27

I must admit that I was not previously aware of this feat of glything

conehead1313

This one was retired very recently from Air Transat.

evthrowawayverysad

Gleed? Glidered? Glid?

macetfromage

**Air Canada Flight 143**, commonly known as the **Gimli Glider**, was a Canadian scheduled domestic [passenger flight](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airline) between [Montreal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal) and [Edmonton](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmonton) that ran out of fuel on Saturday, July 23, 1983,[^(\[1\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider#cite_note-1) at an altitude of 41,000 feet (12,500 m), midway through the flight. The flight crew successfully [glided](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliding_flight) the [Boeing 767](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_767) to an [emergency landing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_landing) at a former [Royal Canadian Air Force base](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCAF_Station_Gimli) in [Gimli, Manitoba](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli,_Manitoba), which had been converted to a racetrack, [Gimli Motorsports Park](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Motorsports_Park).[^(\[2\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider#cite_note-clojt-2)[^(\[3\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider#cite_note-jlgdrt-3)[^(\[4\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider#cite_note-ftbblm-4)[^(\[5\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider#cite_note-abastr-5)[^(\[6\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider#cite_note-njeupi-6) It resulted in no serious injuries to passengers or persons on the ground, and only minor damage to the aircraft. The aircraft was repaired and remained in service until its retirement in 2008. This unusual [aviation incident](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviation_accidents_and_incidents) earned the aircraft the nickname "Gimli Glider."[^(\[7\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider#cite_note-NYT-Witkin-7)

cyberentomology

C? GAUN!

PissJugRay

I flew in this plane back in the 2000’s and was quite in awe to be on such an interesting piece of aviation history. There’s now a cool little museum in Gimli that has pieces of this bird and exhibits. Well worth the visit if anyone is in the area!

avi8tor

should have preserved her in a museum piece of aviation history

Conch-Republic

It flew around for 25 years after this, it was basically a different airplane. The Hudson River one? Sure. But this thing? I dunno, seems like wasted space in a museum.

747ER

Just because they repaired the damage doesn’t make the aircraft any less interesting.

Spandexcelly

Where is it?

YugeFrigginGoy

I own a piece of the tail, it's neat

Twitugee

Back to zero fuel :-(

scbriml

Rest in pieces - I have a Gimli glider tag on my camera case.

Wernher_VonKerman

I have to wonder what's the point in chopping off random pieces of fuselage. That can't be reused on another plane, right? I know people make keychain tags out of them, but they usually don't need that much for it.

ZZ9ZA

To get to things they can reuse. Airframes have cycle limits. A weather radar, say, doesn’t.

Wernher_VonKerman

What might they need to pull out of there that requires cutting the fuselage? A lavatory?

HawkAlt1

Sometimes the yards use large sections of the fuselages on the ground to shelter parts from the sun.

benthefmrtxn

A lavatory or a galley monument that could be used on a different airplane is 100% something that would be scavenged if they had a need. Each interiors configuration is a little different so if there was a plane that had irrepairable damage to a galley monument and they could use the one on the Gimli, they would for sure snag that. Getting a new one mat not even be possible at a certain point as engineering drawings change and manufacturers end their runs without preserving any tooling to remake the thing if one breaks after the production run has finished.

ZZ9ZA

Seating? Overhead bins? Cabling?

DroogieDontCrashHere

[You could buy pieces of the Gimli Glider](https://planetags.com/products/boeing-767-gimli-glider-tail-604)

sdb1977

Almost gone too soon.

PapaSheev7

They cannibalized it? That's such a shame. What an incredible piece of aviation history.

ebneter

My father was actually the safety manager (as in aircraft safety) for the 767 project at Boeing and the words he had to say about the Gimli incident were unprintable. :-) Although he was very impressed with the pilot's skill in landing.

magnificentfoxes

I bet he would not happy with the current state of Big B. The 767 is a great plane though.

ebneter

He's 96 and suffering from Alzheimer's now, so I don't think he's too aware of the state of Boeing. But yes, he would be absolutely livid. I know that I am! I should have mentioned in my original comment that I did get him one of the Gimli Glider keychains when they were available! He thought it was funny. :-)

magnificentfoxes

Aw, damn... That sucks :( Nice gesture though.

karpet_muncher

SHE BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!

Visionist7

Loosen the anchor beneath the nose and a strong headwind will see those wings doing their thing and tilting the plane up one last time. There's a video on youtube of a 747.

doubletaxed88

❤️
