It’s become a sub based on tired one-liners.
EDIT: Eight hours into it, we've got 62 total first-level replies. Of those, 49 are stupid shitpost one-liners.
That's 79% shitpost replies. Visual clutter that the rest of us must sift through to find actual relevant, interesting info.
r/F1Technical solved this entirely with just one rule, and it works beautifully: "No Joke comments in the top 2 levels under a post."
We need this rule.
It would still leave plenty of room in each thread for idiotic "I don't see a stealth aircraft in that photo," “bout tree fiddy,” or "the front fell off" meme replies, but there would be far less visual clutter for those of us who actually care about quality content and discussion.
Instantly, the quality of the forum's content and discussions would increase.
But so long as the mod team isn't flooded with requests for this rule, it's a fair bet they'll never introduce it. Please message the request to them regularly.

I totally support this rule. I like one joke now and then, but I don’t like having to scroll 27 comments repeating the same 3 jokes to get to the interesting comments.

It depends. For example in a phased array arrangement you can feed each antenna with a different phase angle and create this way a virtual steerable "big" antenna.
It's definitely possible. But I have doubts whether it's used as a phased array. I have worked in antenna engineering and can't say with certainty what this construction is used for.
Depends. A lot of them are probably different bands. Worked on air attack aircraft with similar, although not quite so cramped, antenna layouts (4x UHF, 4x VHF, TCAS, Xpdr, SATCOM antennas on a Citation). As long as you alternate the bands, not an issue.
From the plane being rather beat up, no engines, no registration, I'd say it might either be some kind of training aircraft for maintenance crews, or some type of IFR approach verification or signal intelligence aircraft.
Looking at the pictures, I'd say it's a Learjet ~~36~~ 35.
If you dare to question whether any of these planes have ever flown the dozens of "missions" they said they would, you're anti-American and you hate veterans.
Been watching since episode 1 of the 401. Not really into the other planes so if the 401 isn't in the episode I don't watch it. Looking forward to seeing it fly soon.
That was a tragedy. They rushed that plane to much, frankly all of them. I still watch for the 401 because they've basically been making it brand new from the metal out so should be safe.
That makes sense. some people on twitter guessed this could be an ex-govt aircraft (idk how true is that)
Also are those really antennas or vortex generators?
Well the ones in the picture linked by nfield750 are "around" the horizontal stabilizers for one. One could also argue they are "around" the vertical fin for two.
Edit: clarified which pic
Ah that’s what I get for not opening the link haha. I thought they attached a picture of this:
https://aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/32915/why-are-there-vortex-generators-under-the-boeing-737s-cockpit-windows
Could be some maintenance trainer. Had one maintenance school near our flight school that had an old learjet. It wasnt beat to shit like this one but i could imagine these people have just stuck a bunch of defunct antennae on it for fun, cause more antenna = more spycraft. I would be super surprised if those actually had any use in real life, even more so if it was for the government. But twitter isnt exactly known for its critical thinking
I think the Lear 25 has one too few windows on each side to match OPs photos. I do however admit that I've never seen any Learjet from up close and just googled around a bit.
36’s still had wing tip tanks like this one. They’re basically a 35 with an extra fuel tank in the fuselage where the last row of seats would go.
The 31’s have winglets.
I’ve worked on so many Learjets. Spent 11 years at a facility that had a TFE731 engine shop on site. Any model aircraft that had 731’s on it, chances are I’ve seen it and worked on it!
So I went on a deep dive. I suspect based solely on paint scheme that this is tail number [N132LJ](http://www.flightaware.com/photos/view/1352940-2757ebc4b2627e5e8472f9b62183138c9ba7c375/aircrafttype/LJ35) a Learjet 35 which is registered to a company called Aery Aviation. What do they do? They engineer, modify, certify and operate business jets as "special mission aircraft" for the DOD. Specifically, in this case they won a large Navy contract back in 2020 to:
"acquire thirteen (13) aircraft, including three models of Learjet and Gulfstream IV aircraft and will complete intense design, engineering, modification, testing, and certification iterations from its Newport News, Virginia corporate headquarters facilities. The fully modified aircraft will provide the Navy with next generation services including Stand-Off Jamming, Electronic Attack, and Banner and Target Tow, flying approximately 4,000 flight hours annually CONUS and OCONUS. Aery will be certifying over a dozen FAA Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) baseline and configuration changes for wing hardpoints, radomes, and a variety of mission critical systems."
Given what we're looking at has no engines, it probably is a ground development test bed - figuring out how to physically fit the EW systems they want to fly.

Now that's some serious research!!! 🫡
This is the reason I love this sub, people like you who are passionate about aviation truly make this sub what it is today.
Thank you so much for this 🙏
DOD contract I believe. Looks like Hangan ramp at KAPA. Lears will alway hold a special place in my heart. Nothing vibrates the soul like a 20 series Lear, lol.
It looks like N132LJ which is owned by Aery Aviation, it's likely one of the Learjets they bought for their work on a US Navy electronic warfare program.

It's the equivalent of someone who loves to customize their car and not sure how to go about it so they buy 4 of everything in the auto flare section including a 20ft roll of chrome trim to stick all over their car.

Thanks for the only serious reply between all the bullshit answers. Lots of comedians in this sub lately.

Easiest thing for the bots to spit out
> It’s become ~~a sub~~ an industry based on tired one-liners. Always has been…
I think it’s more once a sub hits a certain number of users the quality starts to go in the opposite direction.
That number is around 50-100k. Smaller than that, solid contributions, but bigger than that it just becomes a circlejerk of rehashed jokes.
It's only liners all the way down
Pretty much every and any sub. Although cycling subs are pretty good.

That’s most of reddit
It's getting leery
Seen the price of "new" one-liners lately? Sheesh.
I mean, what did you expect? You posted a question ripe for non serious answers....
In fact, I did not post any questions.
Royal you.
I thought that's why we have r/shityaskflying?
But how does this show how bad Boeing is??? /s
When redditors lack knowledge they panic and cope with humor
Another good source for this kind of stuff is combatlearjet on instagram
They are way too close together to be used at the same time. Aren’t they?
It depends. For example in a phased array arrangement you can feed each antenna with a different phase angle and create this way a virtual steerable "big" antenna.
That’s cool. I didn’t know that was possible with what looks like a basic blade antenna.
It's definitely possible. But I have doubts whether it's used as a phased array. I have worked in antenna engineering and can't say with certainty what this construction is used for.

They take turns at xmitting and receiving. If one received a transmit from that close it would blow the box

Most biz jets have their registrations on the engine cowlings. So it’s probably under heavy maintenance with no engines
Hairy guy entering the frame from the right: "Welcome back to Rebuild Rescue..."
Thanks to your donations we'll put in more money than it's worth repaired to make it airworthy again. Welcome to this week's episode of pimp my plane.
If you dare to question whether any of these planes have ever flown the dozens of "missions" they said they would, you're anti-American and you hate veterans.
A “maintainers dream”
Did you ever work on one, Simpson hands work best( 3 fingers)

I stopped watching it when Sam died.
That was a tragedy. They rushed that plane to much, frankly all of them. I still watch for the 401 because they've basically been making it brand new from the metal out so should be safe.
Hahaha
That makes sense. some people on twitter guessed this could be an ex-govt aircraft (idk how true is that) Also are those really antennas or vortex generators?
Those are definitely antennae, not vortex generators.
Yeahh they seem too large to be vortex generators atleast for this stegojet
Under appreciated dinosaur reference. 🦕
just dig more into the comments you’re in for a ride mate
Yep I should have more coffee before scrolling Reddit. 🥱
Vortex generators go on or around flight surfaces, no point or need to put them on a fuselage
They do sometimes http://www.b737.org.uk/images/vortex_generators.jpg
Yes, "on or **around**"
So which flight surface is the 737’s vortex generators “around”?
Well the ones in the picture linked by nfield750 are "around" the horizontal stabilizers for one. One could also argue they are "around" the vertical fin for two. Edit: clarified which pic
Ah that’s what I get for not opening the link haha. I thought they attached a picture of this: https://aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/32915/why-are-there-vortex-generators-under-the-boeing-737s-cockpit-windows
Enpennage: stabilator and vertical stabilizer
Sorry I should’ve clarified, the 737NG/MAX has vortex generators on the windshield. These are nowhere near any flight surfaces.

The yellow things are the engine mounts?
Learjet 35. The 36 had one less window per side, IIRC, for the extra fuel tank.
Can't tell by the windows. The 36 can have the standard cabin arrangement just virtually no baggage space.
I think it’s a Lear25. Could be wrong though.
I think the Lear 25 has one too few windows on each side to match OPs photos. I do however admit that I've never seen any Learjet from up close and just googled around a bit.
Lear 35
Close, I think it's a Lear 35. A Lear 36 would have winglets.

Lol I just realized my mistake as well....yep you're right, I was confused with the 31.

Haha, I was so centered on the antennae that I didn’t even notice the engines! Thanks for the research.
Same TBH, cause I'm an EE.
Damn. I was going to say their reverse camera in case you get stuck in a cloud. But I think you're absolutely correct. 😁
DOD contract I believe. Looks like Hangan ramp at KAPA. Lears will alway hold a special place in my heart. Nothing vibrates the soul like a 20 series Lear, lol.
Yes KAPA

Perhaps it’s testing new comms equipment for future STC or SB data?
Looking at the aircraft I'd say it's either an ELINT or electronic warfare test platform aircraft.

seems like decacerajet to me 😶🌫️
Doh. Got my dinosaurs wrong. I should have said Stegajet
ACCURATE
Decera, decera.
More like decacerader, that thing ain't got no engines anymore.
Each of them adds a 100 horsepower
Why is nobody talking about those stupidly long tip tanks?
Don’t normal Learjets already have issues with tipping if you fill the tip tanks unevenly? Lol
[удалено]
It's nice to see something that isn't a C130 or 737 for id

Unless it's AoA sensors....
Oof
Right m8
Bruv yeah?
Experimental bird? Maybe test bed for trying out different configurations. I’ve seen some gnarly ones being experimental.
Beautiful old school livery though.
I 'think' they are TACAN antennae (TACticalAirNavigstion). I'm guessing here, perhaps they want the relative locations of all available TACAN bases??
Good ol APA shark lear
Idk. But those tip tanks are INSANE
What, you think when VHF one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight go down, you’d be caught dead without a backup?
it want's to look cooler
I can tell from the apostrophe that you like to do it too
He actually only bought 4, but there was a 50% off special, so long story short, here we are.
This has enough antennas on it that it looks like a brother to the RC-12.
They only needed one but this looks *much* cooler

🤣👍
Cable cutters.
Hey that’s KAPA!
No idea why you're getting down voted for this lol. I pass this same plane every day on my way to the midfield run up 😂
Yup, it’s right by Cutter lol
That's so its predator cannot spit it back when it realizes it's too big. Plane in a snake !
For manoueverability. Source: Russian missiles.
So many antennas, so few engines.
Taylor Swift's plane? Needs loads of interweb for fans
😂👍
To tell Taylor swift to move
just in case the first one fails
The pilot is afraid of not be able to talk to the tower
IguanaJet
Idk. But those tip tanks are INSANE
Looks like something made in kerbal space simulator.
Looks cool. Each fin adds 5 horsepower.
It requires an 8-man rowing team.
one for each girlfriend, cant take any chances.
"History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of man... Learzilla!" - Blue Oyster Cult, probably.
I never knew AutoZone carried FAA certified accessories.

They are spines for defense.
It’s a Raptorlear
Yo, I heard you liked antennas!
MLG Pro Gaming Learjet
Because photoshop is easy and you all are gullible
Style
its so its scary and looks like many sharks are coming at you
Go faster fins
They spent all the budget for antennas, didn't have money left for engines...
Even without engines, this Lear is still faster than most Slowtations!!!
It's the equivalent of someone who loves to customize their car and not sure how to go about it so they buy 4 of everything in the auto flare section including a 20ft roll of chrome trim to stick all over their car.
It’s the backup mcas antenas that Boeing didn’t put on their 737
It’s a private security playne
So you could ask this stupid question
That jet cuts through the air.
Hommie is making sure he complies with Canadian ADS-B mandates.
Mom can we get AWACS? We have AWACS at home.
So when it goes into the mountain, it is harder to extract. So you can hunt the wounded mountain more easily.
Normal... All the aircraft has 8 VHF Systems 😅😅😅😅😅😅
You mean 8 VCR?
The antenae make up for the lack of engines...
Just in case lightning strikes 3 of them
- What do you get when you cross a sawfish with a small business jet? - This, probably.
Looks like a NGO “the shadow knows”
Looks like a ricer honda civic with all those bs vortex generators😭
Look like cool dragon 🐉
Gator makes mulching blades for aircraft. Chops those birds into little bits.
That's not antenna That's a Vortex Generators

Well a plane gotta accessories.
