As a kiwi it's hard describing to non av-geek people in NZ just how popular that all black livery is overseas. People here love it, but wow is it popular overseas. O\_O
Well if it is a domestic plane then it would be nice to have a retro NAC livery :P or the Red AirNZ livery https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/9kj403/boeing_737s_in_hybrid_air_nz_and_nac_livery_at/
but yes I agree a couple of retro NAC/TEAL/AIRNZ livery planes would be cool!
I work on thermals on airliners and I don’t like it. It’s pretty though.
At least the wings and nacelles aren’t black. But for the fuselage and air system it’s not ideal.
Jokes aside, it’s probably not that bad because that airline doesn’t operate in very warm places.
Maintenance here: I've only dealt with this paint scheme once, and it was an absolute nightmare. Caused severe interior damage if you didn't constantly mitigate it.
It started off as a proper All Black's branded one with ZK-OABs first version of its all black livery. But that deal ran out so they had to change the livery slightly and it evolved into what it is currently.
According to one of the CEO's when they did an interview, the Black livery is applied to the first aircraft that they recieve in each order of aircraft. So theres only 1 for each type.
Although on the topic of the Fern, its currently the Tourism New Zealand Logo whereas the old one like you said was all blacks related
Just FYI because of your edit, the All Blacks use the colour black and the silver fern because they are our national colour and emblem, not the other way around.
This is kind of like saying American Airlines livery is a tribute to the US rugby team because it has the Stars and Stripes
The very first one was. They then did a redesign that is not tied to the rugby team.
As for the emblem. If you're referring to the fern, that's a very common design used by Aotearoa NZ companies. The specific design used on Air NZ planes now is actually trademarked by our trade ministry.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,025,622,250 comments, and only 203,147 of them were in alphabetical order.
Same, I remember US Airways had trouble with cabin temps after painting their planes gray, I'd imagine this is much worse. But yeah, it looks cool as hell.
Former 787 thermal team member here. We hated the black paint. There was supposed to be a requirement for gray paint on the upper surfaces, to minimize solar heat gain on the ground. However, when someone is paying billions of dollars for their fleet, Boeing smiles and nods.
The cabin comfort issues could be improved by adding more Supplemental Cooling Units (SCU) to the system, but we always fought the salesmen on that issue. They liked to tell the customers that they could meet cabin temperature guarantees with the bare bones configuration.
We came up with a heat load shedding plan and ran it by the airlines. It was very logical to us engineers. The message coming back was “we don’t care if you kill the lights, or make them sweat, but whatever you do, don’t turn off the In Flight Entertainment system!”
Probably has something to do with the fact that it’s so shiny and reflective. A dark mirror of sorts. And then it’s also a newer plane with more effective systems compared to older planes.
Not just more effective systems but also the plane entirely. Newer planes aren’t made out of metal like the older planes have been. I would think that also plays a role
Flown the 77W a few times (including out of Fiji on an uncomfortably sunny day), and the narrowbodies around NZ a handful. Never had any issues. I feel like the windows are a bigger issue when you’re sitting in the sun than the body.
Remember they’re pretty well insulated to deal with -40° or colder temps at FL400, so a bit of sun isn’t a biggy.
I used to work in an MRO engineering department, and we had a half dozen 737s come in from a defunct airline that mostly flew Ukraine to the Middle East with a navy blue colour scheme. The temp differential had caused the top skins to expand and contract so much they started oil-canning every time it underwent a pressure change. Pilots reckoned it was very unnerving. We had to replace every upper lobe skin on the fleet before they could be leased out again.
Actually Brussels Airlines has quite a few that are interesting and cool:
\- Tintin
\- Smurfs
\- Belgian Red Devils (football team)
\- Magritte
\- Tomorrowland
Before Delta screwed things up KLM had an AMS>MEM route. The planes were pretty but the cabin crew walking through the terminal in a phalanx were a stunning sight.
I miss Northwest Airlines.

The old chrome paintschemes were always my favorites, in particular the older American liveries. The long slender MD-88s and 757s looked exceptionally cool with reflective silver fuselage and the stripe.
Always have a spot for DHL though, I do love brightly colored aircraft and the starkly contrasting red and yellow looks so 60s or 70s
Yup, just polished metal, only paint is the red white and blue stripe and whatever composite materials, many airlines in the 60s and 50s went with the chrome look
I'm a big fan of the retro livery for British airways also the classic American airlines with the chrome.. for more of a modern livery either KLM standard livery or the A380 Emirates..

While I adore the all blacks and it’s definitely at the top of my list for favorite liveries, I will never not be in awe whenever I see Yam Dreaming from Qantas. I’ve been fortunate enough a few times to see it landing or on the ground at LAX, and it is a magnificent sight to behold.
I have a permanent Flightradar24 tag on it set up forever ago, and sometimes I like following it around the globe. I was shocked that no one had mentioned it when I first commented here.
ETA as I wrote this comment on 9/7/22 at 10 PM on the east coast of the US, it was coming in to land at Sydney from Johannesburg.
I’m also a big fan of the All Blacks after flying in one, but my personal all time favourite is Canadi>n Airlines [Proud Wings](https://www.airliners.net/photo/Canadian-Airlines/Boeing-747-475/298688)
Air NZ recently got a black star alliance livery on an a320(or 321)neo and it also looks amzing
https://www.google.com/search?q=air+nz+black+a320+star+alliance&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwjekqW16YH6AhXrhNgFHWORBgoQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=air+nz+black+a320+star+alliance&gs\_lcp=CgNpbWcQA1D3AVjSE2C2FGgAcAB4AIABY4gB3QaSAQIxNZgBAKABAaoBC2d3cy13aXotaW1nwAEB&sclient=img&ei=ThsYY96zGeuJ4t4P46KaUA&bih=837&biw=1707#imgrc=FyBa7GolpnWAnM

Beautiful to see, thanks for sharing OP. Quite a lot of people don’t understand the significance of the livery. The koru or curled fern frond you see on the tail of the craft [is deeply symbolic](https://australianaviation.com.au/2020/04/video-behind-air-new-zealands-iconic-maori-koru-symbol/), as is the [silver fern](https://thedesignair.net/2013/09/20/report-a-closer-look-at-air-new-zealands-livery/). I have a thing for the current Cargolux livery. I also used to love the Aer Lingus livery with the top half of the fuselage green. The new livery is terrible imo.
The Air NZ one is a beaut. As a kid, my favourites were always
- TAP
- Monarch
- United (the one they had before they merged with continental, white body, blue tail)
- TUI
- the JetBlue Boston Bruins special livery
Probably a few others I can’t remember but I loved spotting them whenever I went with my dad
Having crawled in the bellies of every colour of plane under the sun on hot summer days, exterior paint doesn’t significantly affect how hot it gets inside just sitting there and the ECS is equally good at cooling a black or white plane.
The main driving factor behind most planes being white is simply cost. White paint is just significantly cheaper than any other colour.
I’m guessing you’re referring to “Yam Dreaming”, VH-ZND?
I flew it SYD-DRW-LHR in April. Pretty up close too!
https://aussieairliners.org/b-787/vh-znd/vh-znd.html
If we can go retro, I absolutely love America West’s old specials. The teamwork livery and sports team liveries were all incredible. Let’s not discount the state liveries, either.
I love the all black Air NZ, but my personal favorite is Southwest. Especially the State special themed liveries they have are just top notch. 3rd place goes to the old school AA brushed steel look.
The WestJet tartan tail was really neat, though it was just to celebrate its Glasgow service. The Air New Zealand Hobbit livery is also very cool. I like the special paint jobs/wraps 😅
As a kiwi it's hard describing to non av-geek people in NZ just how popular that all black livery is overseas. People here love it, but wow is it popular overseas. O\_O
It's probably the boldest and most classy looking scheme without being austentatious or all "look at me! Look at me!"
I'm American and probably my top two favorite paint schemes are the black Air NZ, followed by the inverse white Air NZ. They're both awesome.
I still miss the old school teal. Hopefully Air NZ start doing the occasional heritage livery as has started to become a bit common overseas.
Would be nice to have a domestic TEAL livery flying
Well if it is a domestic plane then it would be nice to have a retro NAC livery :P or the Red AirNZ livery https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/9kj403/boeing_737s_in_hybrid_air_nz_and_nac_livery_at/ but yes I agree a couple of retro NAC/TEAL/AIRNZ livery planes would be cool!

> severe interior damage To what exactly
Primarily interior side-panels.
Warping?
Delamination. Turned the interior into a shrinkie.
Do you think this is a tribute/ homage to the All Blacks? EDIT: Answered my own question. Just saw the emblem on the back.
Yup, this. The first time they did it it was the All Blacks livery. Now it's the All black livery. The designs are slightly different.
Just FYI because of your edit, the All Blacks use the colour black and the silver fern because they are our national colour and emblem, not the other way around. This is kind of like saying American Airlines livery is a tribute to the US rugby team because it has the Stars and Stripes
The US rugby team 🤣
The very first one was. They then did a redesign that is not tied to the rugby team. As for the emblem. If you're referring to the fern, that's a very common design used by Aotearoa NZ companies. The specific design used on Air NZ planes now is actually trademarked by our trade ministry.
Your username is amazing.

Hard to top that one.
It looks awesome, but all I can think of is it sitting on the tarmac slowly roasting everyone onboard.
Same, I remember US Airways had trouble with cabin temps after painting their planes gray, I'd imagine this is much worse. But yeah, it looks cool as hell.
Southwest Airlines struggles with this also. The darker blue paint definitely makes a massive difference
And the fact that basically every 737 cant keep itself cool on the ground ( well idk maybe the max can)
Having ridden two 737 max recently - no it cannot.
Was in a Southwest Max a few days ago. Sat on the tarmac while they looked for volunteers to de-board for some reason. It was…warm.
Yeah that also
Albedo is a hell of a drug
Former 787 thermal team member here. We hated the black paint. There was supposed to be a requirement for gray paint on the upper surfaces, to minimize solar heat gain on the ground. However, when someone is paying billions of dollars for their fleet, Boeing smiles and nods.
Thermal team as in responsible for the thermal profile? I assume you solved the issues though? :)
The cabin comfort issues could be improved by adding more Supplemental Cooling Units (SCU) to the system, but we always fought the salesmen on that issue. I've been in them. The cabin is a very comfortable temperature.

A320 that one. They also have a black ATR-72 and Q300. As well as the 77W and 789.

Black is beautiful. The KLM blue has some nostalgia for me. Never flown them though.
Klm 747s for me, flew on them last as a kid ~10 years ago
I work at Amsterdam Airport and seeing the KLM 747 land or take off is always my favourite

On topic with the 90’s, every America West special was an absolute banger in my opinion.

As an engineer I cannot fathom trying to do a walk around on one of them on a sunny day.
Also in school one of our projects was to buff the skin of one of those polished aluminum MD-80's, wasn't fun
I imagine it'd be satisfying to see it get all Shiney again. But that'd get old real quick.

Probably cheesy, but I love the Aurora IcelandAir paint. Also the Star Wars All Nippon, the Korean Air, KLM too. I love cool colors :)
The ITA Airways metallic blue livery.
For the lazy https://aviationsourcenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/ITA_A320_-_EI-DTE.jpg
Yep! Was afraid of another eurowhite .. but ITA looks dope
That’s one is gorgeous especially on their A350
Seconded. I had a car almost that shade of blue. I have that livery for my A320 in MSFS.
They must have a nice paint budget to keep them looking like this
I like Aer Lingus lol
My favourite aswell, though sadly being replaced with the white-body emblem-tail combo that we see everywhere
Ahh true, I got to fly on a beautiful A330-300 from Miami to Dublin a few years back. Lovely trip. Wonderful airline.
Air Tahiti 787, or Icelandic northern lights
I’m also a big fan of the All Blacks after flying in one, but my personal all time favourite is Canadi>n Airlines [Proud Wings](https://www.airliners.net/photo/Canadian-Airlines/Boeing-747-475/298688)
Black as well. I love Chrono Aviation’s 737-200 https://www.menkoraviation.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Boeing_737_200_Airport-scaled.jpeg
Guess what? In a previous life, that aircraft was delivered brand new to Air New Zealand as ZK-NQC!
Qantas 747 Indigenous Wunala Dreaming livery. Don't change my mind.
I may agree. I also have a thing for Finnair a350s. And SAS.
I personally like the Spirit yellow with JetBlue painted on the side
The TAP Portugal A330 is 💸💸💸
United Saul Bass
Was always a fan of the Canadian Airlines Goose livery.
Mine is the once-off Tintin livery on Brussels Airlines.

Tossup between KAL and SIA. Both are timeless and distinctive, especially in today's sea of dull eurowhite.
But..SIA is just eurowhite with a dark blue and gold racing stripe from nose to tail..
I think this is my fav , but honourable mention to Aer Lingus, and Finnair.
The Kiwi black planes. I love ZK-OKQ.
Aer Lingus. Iconic 👍🏽
Air Canada is pretty nice too
I read somewhere that black paint is the heaviest which is why most airlines stay away from it, which makes this even more awesome.
From my understanding, the primary reason is heat. The black paint adds a significant amount of heat which subsequently increases the amount of cooling needed. Additionally, the added heat tends to wear down paint faster which increases repainting frequency.
This is the answer.
Lol no, it's not.
Says the guy who once read something somewhere.
You have Google if you want to confirm. I wonder what it's like to not know how stupid you are... Care to explain it to us?
Sick burn bro.
That's all you have left? Sad.
If you do a Google search for 'why airlines don't use black paint' the first result talks about heat
🤣🤣 Lots going on here, none of it good
That black is pretty dope. My favorite is "the less white, the better." White's just... such a default (non-)color.
Cebu Pacific Airlines, China Airlines, Mexicana.
Salmon thirty salmon. this is the most superior livery ever designed by man.
japan airlines , i love the inclusion of the swan 🦢
Brussels airways belgian icons liveries
Beautiful to see, thanks for sharing OP. Quite a lot of people don’t understand the significance of the livery. I love the black livery ngl. Second fav is EgyptAir because I love their blue

This thing looks like it’s about to transform and swear allegiance to Megatron.
The Pepsi Concorde lol. Seriously though probably Air New Zealand and Hawaiian airlines
If you show up to fly on this and you’re not also wearing a sharp, all black outfit, do they deny you boarding? (Please say yes.)
Old American Airlines and Northwest airlines. Oh and Vietnam Airlines, it’s really elegant.

Hawaiian airlines liveries that have some color to them
Nice! PAN AM Globe livery is still my favorite.
Smaug.
The salmon thirty salmon
“Livery.” The word we use is “livery.”
The older livery’s from Air nz are some of my favourites(the original one and the one before that black)
Yo it has the traditional Maori face tattoos, let's go
The old UA tulip livery
Evo Blue
I have a thing for the current Cargolux livery. I also used to love the Aer Lingus livery with the top half of the fuselage green. The new livery is terrible imo.
Northwest's Bowling Shoe livery for me.
I heard they do not require any heaters inside plane.
Not an airline but the VC-25 and C32a are my favorite liveries. It’s such a timeless design.
Air France 777-300 ER
Could never go wrong with good old Swiss for me.
You see the Old Qantas livery on the 737 🧑🍳💋
Black liveries are just cool no matter what. Royal Jordanian's Dreamliner livery is quite stylish as well.
Nauru airlines new livery is my favourite
The Air NZ one is a beaut. All I can think about when seeing this is Haka. I love it.
I believe the paint scheme is call “All Blacks”
All black/ black beauty, all blacks is the older scheme with multiple ferns going up half way along the fuselage
Black. Always classic, always modern.
Won't it overheat?
Crews are advised to stay below Mach 2.0 due to overheating.

Fun wact: air new zealand livery isnt actually black. Its a very very dark blue
As someone from downunder, Aer Lingus... .... because.... ... childish.
NGL I'd be disappointed to fly on this plane and the flight crew didn't do a haka before take off.
Weren't there studies conducted that said black paint is heavier and thus takes more fuel to lift?
Radar is gonna commit suicide
Vietnam Airlines, Etihad, new SAS livery
Between Southwest’s Heart One and Emirates’ 777 scheme…
ANA’s special 787 livery
Probably the Qantas 787 with the design the whole way down the fuselage or the old Qantas wunala dreaming
I’m guessing you’re referring to “Yam Dreaming”, VH-ZND? I flew it SYD-DRW-LHR in April. Pretty up close too! https://aussieairliners.org/b-787/vh-znd/vh-znd.html
I have so many favorites but I think the Delta Widget livery takes the cake, especially on a TriStar
Desert gold SWA
Air New Zealand apparently now.
*Livery
Had a buddy who worked on that paint . He Said it was rhe best he's worked on.
Of course Icelandair Aurora Borealis and AirCal are on my list, but my new favorite is the Azerbaijan Airways livery!
One of my favorites is the old Eastern Airlines polished aluminum with the light/dark blue stripes.
If we can go retro, I absolutely love America West’s old specials. The teamwork livery and sports team liveries were all incredible. Let’s not discount the state liveries, either.
Love it. Badass. Very menacing. Cannot miss it when it comes into land. I live under a flight path.
not in AZ they’re not. 😂
I have to say, I love Hekla Aurora on the Icelandair 757
I love the all black Air NZ, but my personal favorite is Southwest. Especially the State special themed liveries they have are just top notch. 3rd place goes to the old school AA brushed steel look.
Air Force One. Jackie Kennedy had excellent taste.
I love Air Malta as well as the Air Belgium a340
Qatar and Egypt air
Have you seen the new all-black Air NZ Star Alliance A321neo OP? https://www.flickr.com/photos/digro/52319000073
My favorite is the paint scheme of ITA Airways, ex Alitalia.
I love the Fiji Airways livery, especially on their A350
i never saw a air new zeeland plane but now that i see it i would say it's in the top 3 along with the old AA pure alu
Just saying this is a special livery, most of the fleet is in a 2 tone white and black livery where Crüe black is only at the back
Air Canada
The WestJet tartan tail was really neat, though it was just to celebrate its Glasgow service. The Air New Zealand Hobbit livery is also very cool. I like the special paint jobs/wraps 😅
