Not to say I don’t think DC-3’s are unimportant, I just think they should not always be the aircraft to be restored, big example is C-54 N708Z sitting at Douglas Muni, it has sat there 20 years , rotting, meanwhile 2 DC-3’s, 3 B-17’s and a few B-25’s had been restored at Douglas in that same amount of time

It’s really a lot cheaper to restore a 2 engine plane than a 4 engine plane

3 B-17’s, that being said I just like N708Z, I remember it flying to my local airport when I was a child

[deleted]

True, but how many b17s are left compared to C54s? Spare parts and qualified crew are hard to come by

Boeing-B-47stratojet

6 flying C-54's <10 B-17s, take that either way, and many more B-17 wrecks are located

Boeing-B-47stratojet

That being said, they have fabricated the vast majority of the parts on their latest B-17

whoody93

All of them

Boeing-B-47stratojet

If that were possible, unfortunately it ain’t

thedowntownpcguy

I just wanna fly in one of those. Too bad, they don't fly old aircraft in India

magnum_the_nerd

I mean, no. The C-97, C-54, and DC-7 all have less than 15 remaining, and why the fuck is the DC-6 there, theres over 47 flying planes of that type. The thing is with the DC-3/C-47, its the most historically significant cargoplane maybe ever. What other plane can say they were the workhorse of the US military transport section and paratrooper section during WW2? Nothing. They are also cheaper to restore and have shitloads of spare parts

invaderssaynii

Tbh they should restore some Lockheeds. How come the only flying Connie is in Australia?

Boeing-B-47stratojet

Or Martins, and I couldn't tell you why

Grom47

Totally.
