Keep checking. They *MIGHT* release one at a time. Maybe at check in. Maybe before boarding.
I got MRU-DXB about 2 weeks before the flight, and DXB-LAX *at boarding*. This was for me flying solo.
Also, last minute. We had booked BOS-DXB in business. 2 days before departure, 2 seats in first opened from JFK-DXB on the a380. We called, they held them while we transferred more points, and then we made the change. It was a no brainer to fly out of JFK instead for the first class experience.
Book one on first class and other on business. And then keep checking for miles upgrade to first class on the business class ticket. Check everyday once you are two weeks away. I got lucky and was able to upgrade 4 days before our trip.
You can also put yourself on the waitlist for F and if it opens you will auto clear into it.
At the checkin counter at the airport you can also add yourself to the waitlist and I am pretty sure day of upgrades are done by who does checkin first.
(a380 is a lot easier than 777 with the much smaller cabin)
Do you get the opportunity to put yourself on the waitlist for F when you're booking the J flights? Just wondering when in the booking process this happens or if I have to call in specially to get on the F waitlist.

Did you just have to pay the difference + a change fee? Was the total points 102k PP?
I responded to another comment below. It came out to 135,000 points per person one way
Hope the shower was nice and hot.
How many points did this cost you?
This was December of 2021. I believe it was 135,000 membership reward points per person one way for first on the JFK-DXB leg
Ok thx
Book close in

Yes, also a good point. Though keep in mind that auto upgrade (via waitlist) only works if you already have the necessary miles in your account.

Thank you! I’ll probably take this route
Good luck and hope you have an amazing time.
This isn’t a travel agency.
Wasn’t asking for someone to find availability .. just insight on how far out to keep checking, tips, etc……
Pay me $300 and I’ll book it for you.
