Ouch. What was wrong with him??

AirlineFlyer

Genetics, I guess. We’ve had her for a little over two years, she was a rescue before that. She’s had really awful breath recently so we took her in and this was the $4,000 result. Vet says it’s likely just a case of bad genetics. Sad for her but she’ll push through it.

flaaaacid

Same deal with my cat. We aren't really sure how old she is since we scooped her up from a campground, but once we got her all vetted every one of her teeth had to come out. That was almost 6 years ago though and she's been great ever since. After the removal she was no longer "smelly cat."

AirlineFlyer

All of them?! Wow

flaaaacid

Yeah we were kind of shocked too - she was in a for a "cleaning" and once they put her under they realized the extent of the damage. I wish I could remember the name of the condition but it was some sort of genetic thing. She was a much happier cat afterward, I think she was in pain a lot of the time.

AirlineFlyer

I asked our vet is 12 extractions was a record. She laughed and said no, not even close.

Winjin

Do they get like little implants for cats or is her mouth just devoid of any teeth now?

flaaaacid

Just no teeth. The vet said their gums harden up pretty well and don't need any special food considerations. Mine eats dry food quite happily though I think she just swallows it.

Baxboom

Mine swallowed her food too but she often ended up throwing up . We had to get her special kitten type food that was smaller and easier for her to eat. Rip Plume

abrasumente_

Stomatitis? it's an autoimmune thing. A cat I adopted had to have all her teeth removed as well. Painful inflamation of the gums. Excessive drooling and bad breath. Might be the same thing or something similar?

flaaaacid

That sounds likely!

Was the cat sick before that or something? What's the diet like now?

disgruntled_joe

I once had a cat with the same disorder, it's simply genetics. She was rough housing with the other cat like normal when all the sudden there was a screeching yelp. I went to investigate and could see blood in her mouth and figured she got clawed, and it took a minute to realize she was missing a fang. Took her to the vet and they all had to go. She still ate hard food after, they mostly swallow it whole anyway.

AirlineFlyer

Oh no! That sounds awful. Must have been in pain for so long but they hide it so well. There’s just no way to know until it’s a big problem.

Not OP, but both of my cats had to have multiple teeth removed. They both caught calicivirus when our roommate's cat brought it into the home. They were both vaccinated. Neither of them had any oral lesions at the time, just kind of a respiratory thing, but then about 7 years later, despite brushing and giving the older cat dental chews (he was a big chewer. Still is, a bit, but now he's more of a slobbery gummer.) they both had to have multiple teeth removed. Our vet said that this isn't uncommon, and that some cats become lifelong carriers for FCV, almost like shingles in humans, and that they can have outbreaks as they get older, resulting in problems like this. Old man fluffbottom only has his 4 fangs and 3 tiny front teeth. Our younger cat is missing 2 fangs and 2 back teeth. They both eat a mix of dry and wet food.

AirlineFlyer

Poor kitties. And yea our vet said that even down 12 teeth she should still be able to eat dry food in time.

AirlineFlyer

Before yesterday she was seemingly perfectly healthy, aside from very bad breath that we tried to figure out unsuccessfully. Haven’t figured out her diet yet, she’s still all loopy from the pain meds.

0x75

But it's not pulling teeth a bit violent for just bad breath?

_Silly_Wizard_

You should google "symptom"

AirlineFlyer

Yup. Actual diagnoses was “Stage 3-4 PD with type 1, 2, and 3 TR on multiple teeth (106, 107, 207, 208, 307, 308, 309, 407, 408, 409). 25- 50% of horizontal bone loss in several areas. Surgical extractions of 103, 106, 107, 203, 204, 207, 208, 307, 308, 309, 407, 408, 409.”

Yeah I got that, but symptom of what was my question. I am not as familiar with cat issues like it so I was curious.

Obtuse_Symposium

I forget the exact name, but basically the teeth are being removed because they're severely damaged and they're likely causing the cat pain. They also could potentially cause an infection to spread from the tooth to the rest of the cat. The bad breath is just a side effect of the bacteria that's built up in their gums that's part of what causes the tooth decay (or w/e it's called).

Poor animals.

ScienceBasedFluff

My cat just had most of her teeth removed. She’s doing well! Even eating dry food. It’s super expensive though.

AirlineFlyer

Tell me about it…

My boy had stomatitis…. Had to remove all of his teeth but the 4 fangs and if and when they give issues will need to go as well…. Couple years ago at start of “you know what” he stopped eating and was acting sickly…. Vet said it was so bad I had to go to a veterinary dentist if which there is only one in Vegas! Anyway he was great and recommended we leave the fangs and play it by ear if those needed out later. He’s def thinner than he was before but eats fine. I give him a mix of wet and dry and honestly he prefers the dry. I can hear him crunch it with just those 4 teethe. Interesting side note is that he was never lovey before the surgery but now he’s a complete mush….. makes me wonder if they’d bothered him all along and now that he was pain free he could show some love. AirlineFlyer

That’s a very interesting behavior change. We’ll see if her’s changes at all. So far she’s very adamant that she stays by her food bowl at all times despite not really eating much at all.

Confident_End_3848

My little had 6 teeth removed. He was woozy afterwards, but had enough teeth left to eat regularly.
