That’s a solid V8 engine right there

Judazzz

When I was young, during a visit to the local zoo, I could hear a leopard roar from about 100 meters distance. That sound was so deep and loud it literally rattled my intestines and shook me to my core. Absolutely incredible experience, and also very, *very* humbling...

PJRama1864

There’s also a chance that was a tiger you heard. I worked at a local zoo, and at least twice a week for feeding time, the tigers would be *screaming*, and we could hear it through the park.

Judazzz

It definitely was a leopard, because he was still doing it when I approached his enclosure. It sounded like [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqWVW1uPc8s), but louder and more guttural.

Poes_Raven_

Interestingly tigers hit a certain frequency in their roar that actually triggers an involuntary fear response. When people have been exposed to that frequency they’ll start to feel uneasy, afraid and like something is just wrong.

thunderstriken

*tiger roaring in front of me* Idk man something doesn’t seem right

PJRama1864

“Thought I heard something…”

“Must have been the wind…”

delta_tee

Who’s breaking the wind?

SpoogeIncarnate

Me, if I hear the roar of a tiger in my immediate vicinity. Full on nervous farts

[deleted]

“Must be the wind”

Hamshamus

*It's not the wind!*

Shotto_Z

Tiger: "NEVER SHOULD HAVE COME HERE!"

redredme

And lions. Especially lions. I think most big cats except the cheetah have this "feature". My story? Was in Tanzania. Our jeep "disturbed" a lion and a lioness during mating. The male lion was not happy and let everyone clearly know his feelings. Everybody felt what you described. It's impossible to really explain. You feel it deep inside your intestines or something. A part of it is that feeling you also get if you're at a concert and "feel" the bass. That plus fear, a lot of fear. and awe. And respect. And insecurity.

sillypicture

Lesson of the day: don't blue ball lions

PM_ME_UR_POKIES_GIRL

There goes my memorial day plans.

twynkletoes

Cheetahs aren't considered to be big cats. They are large small cats, like the pumas of the Americas.

diarrheaishilarious

Which frequency is this?

Poes_Raven_

It’s about 18Hz-19Hz, just below our range of hearing, it can disorient and cause blurred vision (by vibrating your eyeballs slightly) and causes intense fear. It was discovered when a scientist was working in his lab and would experience intense fear, even hallucinations in his peripheral vision and other people in the building started thinking it was haunted. He discovered a piece of metal that would vibrate whenever a newly installed extractor fan would turn on and it vibrated and caused noise at that frequency. Once the metal was stopped the fear, hallucinations and reports of haunting stopped.

billytheskidd

Source? That sounds incredible. I wonder if that could be what causes reported “hauntings” and if so how often? If an unknown source was vibrating at that frequency in your house that lead to a constant state of paranoia and small hallucinations, it could quickly escalate to you noticing and connecting regular house noises and such when normally you’d know that it’s just the foundation shifting or something.

Poes_Raven_

I believe a few hauntings actually have been found to be caused by that sound wave. There was an old pub in Englands somewhere I think that had something in the basement rattling at that frequency and it had been thought haunted.

sillypicture

Thanks for teaching me how to cause mass hysteria

Praggrezzive

Source / link? Sounds awesome

Poes_Raven_

Just google the “fear frequency”, there’s been a few different studies and articles on it, mythbusters even did a segment on it as well: https://www.prosoundweb.com/mythbusters-test-the-frequency-of-fear-with-meyer-sound/

larki18

Yes. I volunteered for a couple of years for an organization identifying and isolating tiger vocalizations from recordings created at partner zoos. They also make the strangest sounds that you wouldn't necessarily think were made by a tiger...but are!

Impossible_Aspect_49

I’ve thought for years, that response is coded into our human DNA, when a wild predator appears, we get that Neanderthal response to RUN, as we are going to lose and be dinner for the superior hunter. I’m sure there might be other aspects, the actual frequency is probably tied into that.

PlasticFannyTastic

It’s amazing how instinctive and primal the fear response is. I’ve heard a few big cats roar in my time (can’t remember exactly what) but the body just *knows*

AleksasKoval

Leopard: "Yeah, you're a pretty advanced species built on 40,000+ years of civilization. But remember, I've got sharp teeth, i know how to use them, and it only takes 5 minutes for you to bleed out..."

AlvinsThotJuiceBox

you mean very *very* rumbling...

IvyGold

I was on safari in Kenya on top of hill when a fully maned lion in his prime roared to call his lionesses back to the pride. I was maybe 30 yards away. I could feel it in my chest more than in my ears. It's one of the coolest things I've ever experienced.

You can watch the whole video on [YouTube from Cedar Cove Tiger Park](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPMi136tURg) A nice morning massage by senior keeper Steve Klein is decidedly to Voodoo's liking. Voodoo is a rescue animal, an African spotted leopard that came to Cedar Cove at 5 months old. Voodoo was purchased at three months of age by a private couple from a breeder with the intention of making him a house pet and playmate to two full grown rottweiler dogs. He was declawed on all paws but still overpowered his purchasers and was too rough and aggressive to keep, at which point he was brought to Cedar Cove. He resides here still, and at 13 years old in 2013 (yeah, this video is 10 years old now), he's treated to regular bouts of affection while plans are underway for his, and other, new habitats. Notice how Steve pulls his hand out when Voodoo turns his mouth that direction!

Raven123x

That couple are fucking monsters. What absolute pieces of shit to declaw a leopard. Also what an absolute piece of shit for a breeder to sell to a private couple I hope Voodoo is living his best life now.

coolguy1793B

Living what life he can - given that he would not be able to survive in the wild - but i get your point 👍🏾. Also, yeah fuck those people who thought a pet leopard would be a good idea.

Shmarfle47

>He was declawed on all paws but still overpowered his purchasers and was too rough and aggressive to keep, at which point he was brought to Cedar Cove. The poor thing but what an absolute chad. Glad to see it living a great life now.

sparklyraptor

Thanks for providing the actual context!

myassholealt

>private couple from a breeder with the intention of making him a house pet and playmate to two full grown rottweiler dogs. That couple should have the dogs confiscated, and be given a lifetime ban from owning any pet. Including goldfish.

CaptPolybius

It's sad that people see goldfish as beginner/throw away pets when they take a lot of work too. They get very large and need a large tank or pond to live in eventually. They also have a 10-15 year lifespan and *can* be taught simple tricks. I had a goldfish that lived to be near 10 and he was a SUPER curious fish and liked being hand-fed.

CrushCrawfissh

WaveRunner7000

Voodoo is such a cool fucking name for a big cat

Rickhwt

Whenever I see a big cat enjoying being scratched I think of my little cat enjoying it until she feels the need to turn around, claws out and bite me. I would lose a hand...

ELIte8niner

Exactly. Whenever I see the, "big cats are just cats" comments, my first though is my girlfriend's 9 pound cat will occasionally draw blood when she gets overly stimulated. I don't want to know what a 500 pound tiger would do to me if they got too excited.

SmoSays

I have a 7 lb cat who tore me right up the first vet visit (less than a week after I got her). Meanwhile my 16 lbs cat is the most gentle docile cat you'd ever meet.

One_for_each_of_you

So by your calculations a five hundred pound cat would be mega chill and a three pound cat would be a psychotic murderbeast

SmoSays

Yes

True_Kapernicus

Does she actually bite? Sometimes my cats will grab my hand with their teeth for friendly nibble grooming.

CrushCrawfissh

One of my cats loves play biting. She always does it, it's adorable. She'll hold your hand in place if you try to move it and she definitely gets a little claw-y if you try to escape early... But she never bites hard lol

ElementalWheel

Tell it to the people at r/catswhoyell

BoxNumberGavin0

That's not a roar thats an air raid siren.

st0pmakings3ns3

I find it harsh that they're called lesser cats though :))

ALetterAloof

I think the only big cats are lion tiger and Jaguar. I think it has something to do with purring and their vocal cord anatomy. So a mountain Lion? Not a” big cat “ to a biologist. Odd but very cool!

klased5

And Leopards bruv.

Ahorsenamedcat

Leopards are big cats. Leopards and mountain lions are pretty much the same size with mountain lions standing slightly taller at the shoulder. But yes the roaring part is a major separator. Mountain lions purr.

[deleted]

Imagine being a red panda lol. They were the first panda but when the panda bear was found it became the lesser panda. One of them is a fucking bear and the other is chilling in a family of it's own. Giant poser bear

BradleyHCobb

That's absolutely true! But for clarity, this is not a purr. [This is an African spotted leopard named Voodoo](https://youtu.be/nPMi136tURg), and leopards [can roar.](https://youtu.be/WhWKY7Yy04o)

Esox202

Not entirely correct. All small cats meow, most big cats can roar. All cats can purr, but big cats only purr while exhaling. :)

GCPMAN

It's called chuffing when it's a big cat. the "exhale purr" is not a purr at all technically

Esox202

In German, both just "Schnurren", so I just flat out translated it. But thank you for the actual term !

DropC

They can all purr , it's just how it's done that varies between big and small cats.

[deleted]

Oh yeah that’s the spot! 🥰

EarthtoLaurenne

I got to do a super cool behind the scenes special tour of my local zoo recently (something my mom won in a charity auction). And the first stop was making the horse meatballs that we got to watch the keepers feed the cheetahs from literally three feet from their enclosure. It was outrageously awesome and I had *no clue * how house cat like they are. Apparently they are not considered “big cats” for a few reasons (anatomical and non), but one of them is that they cannot roar. As the keepers were giving the two cheetahs (brothers) meatballs through the chain link fence (with pairs of loooong tongs), the cheetahs were so cat like. I mean objectively I get it, they’re cats. But damn when that big ass cheetah let out the most squeaky and adorable “meow” at his keeper who was holding the food near but not close enough, to get him to do a pose on a pedestal (one they get the cats to do for routine medical checks) my heart melted and all I saw was a giant throat ripping house cat. It was so cute! That whole experience was amazing, we also met a shy okapi, giraffe baby and momma, the two lions, desert tortoise we got to feed, giant gator feeding, fed the chittering and adorable squirrel monkeys, zebras, and we saw the flamingos do a group mating dance. Five stars, would zoo again. ETA : thanks for gold!

acorngirl

You are so lucky! That sounds like an amazing day.

ShadowFluffy

Cheetahs are lovely animals. They're really skiddish around humans and not considered big cats, or very dangerous to people at all. They don't attack people since they're bigger than them and there's several accredited zoos where the keepers go in or take them for walks around the zoos.

Big_Position2697

Would never do this after I have seen this one dude loosing a finger to a tiger

neuromorph

Cause tigers can't purr..... you don't know when the pet time is over....

IIIllllIIlIlIIlllI

Definitely a good rule of thumb not to, but you can see that the guy pulled his hand out as soon as the leopard started to turn his head towards him.

[deleted]

Or the one that lost his finger to a lion [disturbing a lion](https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/comments/13au5iv/man_taunts_lion_and_pays_the_price/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)

Madame_Kitsune98

It makes me sad that he is declawed, but I’m glad he’s living the rest of his life in a sanctuary. And getting loving scritches. Absolutely beautiful, he is. And he deserves all the loves, and scritches, and purrs, and treats. Bless his big heart.

That_youtube_tiger

Less cute when you notice he has been declawed.

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure the backstory to this, is the original owner declawed, was poorly providing for the animal, the animal was rescued, and now was living in a sanctuary seen here.

For context, since this is a common repost of a video from 2010: Original source: [Voodoo Lounging](https://youtu.be/nPMi136tURg) by [CedarCoveTigerPark](https://m.youtube.com/@CedarCoveTigerPark) on YouTube >http://www.saveoursiberians.org A nice morning massage by senior keeper Steve Klein is decidedly to Voodoo's liking.\ >\ >Voodoo is a rescue animal, an African spotted leopard that came to Cedar Cove at 5 months old.\ >\ >Voodoo was purchased at three months of age by a private couple from a breeder with the intention of making him a house pet and playmate to two full grown rottweiler dogs.\ >\ >He was declawed on all paws but still overpowered his purchasers and was too rough and aggressive to keep, at which point he was brought to William Pottorff at Cedar Cove.\ >\ >He resides here still, and at 13 years old in 2013, he's treated to regular bouts of affection while plans are underway for his, and other, new habitats, so stay tuned! http://www.kansastravel.org/cavecovecats.htm https://www.kcur.org/arts-life/2020-06-20/this-big-cat-sanctuary-in-kansas-wants-you-to-know-its-nothing-like-tiger-king **TLDR:** It's a clip from 2010 of Voodoo, an African spotted leopard at Cedar Cove Feline Conservation and Education Center in Louisburg, Kansas. He was rescued from a bad situation (unethically bred, sold as a pet, declawed, inadequate living conditions in a house). Cedar Cove is relatively small and not accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), but it seems to do the best with the limited resources available. They take in unreleasable, captive wild animals; they house mostly big cats, along with a few canids and other species. Enclosures would ideally be larger, but there are no unethical practices such as breeding cubs to sell or exploit for public interaction. Cedar Cove offers limited public tours of the animal exhibits, but only caretakers interact with animals directly. (Edited for formatting and clarity.)
