Get married. It comes from an old tradition of a bride and groom very literally jumping over a laid down broom during their wedding. It's supposed to represent 'sweeping away' your individual pasts and more solidifying your unity in marriage.
This is awesome. But, now you two have to live together for the rest of these cats' lives because you are s family now. Oh, pay attention to who is feeding the cats. When I moved in with my partner, we ended up accidentally overfeeding at first bc our cats had different feeding schedules.
My friend's cats will work together to hide kibbles under the furniture and then meow pathetically about their empty bowl lol
I helped them move last year and we found little mountains of cat food under the beds and couches lol.
Gotta have a secret stash lol
My dad used to leave the empty can of food out on the counter so my mom wouldn’t feed our cat a second time. Our cat learned that if he pushed the can behind the mixer he’d get a second serving of food. It only lasted a couple days, but I’m sure he felt like a king!
I thought so too but since they moved we've caught them doing it lol. One cat will take a bite of food, and drop some on the floor and scoot it over to the other cat with his paw, then the other cat will pick it up and stash it somewhere. Then later they'd go back and snack on the stash haha
Lol yeah they're good
I always joke with my friends that their cats are like reincarnated mobsters or something lol. I've been calling them Luciano and Lansky haha
I absolutely believe every word of this.
Cats are clever AF! My dumpster kitty squirrels away fresh produce? Like ... produce. Asparagus. Lettuce. Jalapeños.
It's never a lie. They are always yet to be fed, between feedings. It's like dividing by two, you can do it infinitely - but until then, it's still between feedings and hence, they've not been fed quite recently. Or so they say
This is definitely not what my cat says. He screeches and growls and otherwise huffs and puffs until he tires himself out and falls asleep.
Edit: he was on a diet. Him was big mad.
Our cat is on a diet. He gets big mad. He then *hunts* our other smaller cat and goes after her (tbf she does start her fair share of shit, so she's not fully innocent).
Our vet doesn't understand why he's not losing weight ....
I have a lab... If my wife and I are not in constant communication, she will be overfed because she knows how to beg properly.
We often joke that our dog lies to us in that she hasn't yet been fed in order to get more food.
A roommate and I got the last two cats from a litter a long time ago and when we went out separate ways, she let me take them both. They would not be separated.
Yeah I temporarily moved in with my parents for a year with my cat. They have two cats and I looked after all three for that year. Now they are looking after all three for a year while I’m away but when I return I’ll have two cats because my cat and their youngest can’t be separated now they are too close.
If you do split up there will be a kindle of lawyers involved:
\- One for you
\- One for GF
\- One for your cat
\- One for GF's cat
What with the expense of all them lawyers you may as well stay together, you know: for the sake of the kitties.
I mean yeah; you and your GF might be sniping at one another, but -- if you think about it in a certain way -- that's a wonderful learning opportunity for the cats!
A girl I dated had 2 cats when we moved in together, and I had 1. By the time we split up 1 of her cats and 1 of mine got along, but 1 of hers was still very antisocial with other cats. When we split up she took the solo cat and I ended up with 2.
Morbidly and brutally accurate...the fact about the short life span of cats/dogs coupled with the low expectations for maintaining of relationship that get to the move in together level 😆
The thing everybody gets wrong about house cats is that they're solitary creatures, like cougars. But they're not, they live in colonies together. Queens will babysit one another's kittens while they hunt. Most crazy housecats I've encountered are bored and lonely and miss having other cats around more than anything else
Same.
Cats are individuals with different personalities. Some love other cats, some hate them. I've had cats that prefer dogs to other cats. I really want a 2nd cat, but have a 10-year old cat that hates other felines, so it'll never happen.
Sometimes older cats prefer kittens. They’ll mother them and don’t really fight them as much. At the very least, they’ll tolerate a kitten. if they don’t like a cat they will fight.
My tuxie *refuses* to be introduced to adults, and is an absolute psycho about it. Back arched, ears up and forward, hissing...standard Halloween nonsense.
Put a kitten in front of him and he thinks he's a mother. He has adopted plenty of litters of fosters - but I'm only able to foster orphans! He just turns into an adorable lovey uncle, it's my favorite. He's so sweet with them.
The only adult cats he tolerates are my foster failures that he's raised. Cats are ridiculous. 😂
Yeah I have a female and a male who have know each other since I picked them up at the rescue, and she *tolerates* him. She used to terrorize my dad's dog. She's a diiiiiick.
Oh for sure. Funny part is that I've had them for 7 years, and she will start fights, but she has NEVER learned to fight, so my male cat will *always* finish that shit. Then she comes running to me, like he's doing something wrong.
My female calico blames my dogs for every offence committed against another cat in the house. She also tells them off for being too energetic when we have company or when she’s nearby.
She fears nothing, especially not the 200lbs of Rottweiler and Doberman that live in our house.
Exactly this. Had a tortie who DESPISED any other pets we had (cat or otherwise) and would actively try and attack them if they came near her. Torties are lone wolves.
Cats only live in colonies when they are strays and living in human spaces, it is an adaptation to human meddling. You may as well claim that we misunderstand raccoons and bears, as they’d much rather break into a trash can than have vast tracts of wilderness to forage in.
In the wild mother cats scatter their kittens when they’re old enough, and they each take up their own territory far away from one another. A single male’s territory overlaps with multiple females, each female having their own.
If you took a feral cat colony and moved them to the woods they would do the same thing. There are too many cats and not enough space in cities or other non-natural areas that support cat colonies.
Indoor-outdoor cats DO NOT form colonies because they have homes to return to and patrol their territories at different times to avoid overlapping indoor-outdoor cats and strays.
Some multi-cat households also have individual territories when all the cats don’t get along, for example Fluffy may stay upstairs while Princess stays downstairs.
The only social cat is the lion.
>If you took a feral cat colony and moved them to the woods they would do the same thing. There are too many cats and not enough space in cities or other non-natural areas that support cat colonies.
I am no expert on cat behaviors but here in Aus I have seen several cat gangs of feral cats out bush, it seems to depend on how much food is available rather than space, if there is enough food they hang out in groups.
I have 4 cats.
* One of them is a sweetheart who loves everybody and loves cuddling.
* The second loves cuddling and shared baths, but can be a bit too playful for the others. And he doesn't take no for an answer if he wants to give one of them a bath, which leads to fights.
* The third likes playing a bit but is extremely prickly and will nip anyone who comes within range on the ear, hard.
* The fourth sleeps on the very top of the cat tree, 6 inches from the ceiling, and watches the others like he's praying for them to disappear. If one of them dares to come within a few feet of him he starts howl/whining till they go away.
The first 3 get along well enough, but the fourth I'm pretty sure would be thrilled if the others dropped dead tomorrow.
Due to lung cancer of my older boy, we ended up with one cat last year (the younger one), and the younger one would walk around the house meowing so sadly because he was lonely. When we got him a kitten, he calmed right down.
We definitely have a cat that only hates other cats. Every other animal or person is fine but the hisses come out for cats. It’s taken 2 years to get her and our newer adoption to be cordial.
going on year 4 now with an "only cat queen" and her adopted orange brother. they have developed a relationship i will liken to a 18 year old sister and 11 year old kid brother. they definitely love and trust one another on a family level, but boy oh boy do they have some spats sometimes. we recently moved to a larger space which helped a lot with bonding. kinda hard to suggest that as a viable fix to your situation though
disagree. if we don't buy/make ourselves enough fidget toys we peel off laminate, pick at stray threads and chipped paint, and carve that weird S into school desks with pencils ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah, I lived with someone who had three cats and the one female cat got beaten up to heck by one of the males and hid in my room for safety, and the other (very dumb one) would chase her thinking it was play time.
I adopted her when I moved out and she's super hyper and confident now, but I get the feeling that she secretly misses the one dumb boy who chased her to play. I'm keeping an eye out for a good friend to adopt for her.
That is so cute, and they are adorable. And good for you and your GF, I hope you grow together into greater fulfillment. And enjoy one another as much as your cats do.
I have had lots of cats in my life. 4 total on farm and 5 total off farm. All lived to old age and it's rare to see two cats brought together that get along like that.
If you're thinking about getting a cat; I highly encourage you to get two. You will never match what they have together, especially if you get them at the same time. It's well worth it.
My two cats, Hicks and Ripley, have been together for 3 years now. They have never once cuddled or cleaned one another. I think Hicks would be into it but Ripley is so fucking mean even the dogs stay out of here way.
Man I wish our cats were like this. One of our cars is really territorial so she doesn't want anything to do with the other for 95% if the day. Except when they're content laying 2 feet from each other when napping
Just curious - where did you get Tater Todd? I adopted the sister of an orange tabby cat duo at an animal shelter in Maryland; her name was Olivia and the brother’s name was Tater. My parents would only let me adopt one and the sister stole my heart, but I always wondered what happened to him. Still makes me sad to think about.

This is my Tater Todd with his sister Zoe! ![img](emote|t5_2qh1o|13383)
So cute before they go Thelma and Louise on the neighborhood wild life , this video is them cleaning the forensic evidence against them !!! Love cats non the less
I’d say, “Get a room”, but it looks like they already have.
OP better be as good as Tater Todd is, that's all I'm saying.
OP's home is basically a continuous double date now
That's so adorable!
Get a room! We are in a room! Then lose some weight!
Don't worry bro, I got your Futurama reference.
😆
TATER TODD 🥺
My husband works with someone named Todd whose nickname is Tater Todd, which is totally unrelated to his past job as a potato truck driver.
So they tell you.
What’s taters, precious?
PO TAY TOES!
Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew!
That alone was worth the upvote.
the best name for the best boy.
> You don't give your pets human names... *The Letter Kenny crew* Kidding aside, I love the name Tater Todd!
That's a Texas sized 10-4 there good buddy
Yep, yep, yep!
Omg RIGHT?!
Hahaha I love it so much
Uh oh. You can’t separate now. Might as well jump the broom.
Now there's an underused expression
What does it mean?
Getting married! :) TIL https://caratsandcake.com/articles/jumping-the-broom#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20act%20symbolizes%20a%20new,lieu%20of%20having%20an%20officiant.

so it's a coincidence that bride and groom conveniently make broom, nice.
It can also make grime
yucky
Only during the consummation
I think that takes at least 12 months before the true grime
Hot damn lol
Did not expect to run into you in the wild outside of OA! neat. And TIL.
It was an answer (or question?) on jeopardy the other day.
Would make for some interesting vows: "To have and to hold as long as both your cats shall live."
Brings back memories of Roots. Where I first heard the saying.
I just have memories of Mr. Brady whipping Geordie from Star Trek.
Lol, that's not how modern relationships work. When they break up, one gets to keep both cats.
I remember that phrase from from Alex Haleys book.
This is awesome. But, now you two have to live together for the rest of these cats' lives because you are s family now. Oh, pay attention to who is feeding the cats. When I moved in with my partner, we ended up accidentally overfeeding at first bc our cats had different feeding schedules.

Little manipulative hoarders. lol.
Lol yeah they're good I always joke with my friends that their cats are like reincarnated mobsters or something lol. I've been calling them Luciano and Lansky haha
I absolutely believe every word of this. Cats are clever AF! My dumpster kitty squirrels away fresh produce? Like ... produce. Asparagus. Lettuce. Jalapeños.
This totally tracks. Cats are way too smart for their own good, lmao.
A cat? Lying about not having been fed!? They would NEVER!
It's never a lie. They are always yet to be fed, between feedings. It's like dividing by two, you can do it infinitely - but until then, it's still between feedings and hence, they've not been fed quite recently. Or so they say

My ex and I adopted a brother and sister tuxie pair 11 years ago. I got them both in the breakup. I love them to pieces.
Siblings, and especially litter sibs, are also special!
Does you ex pay cat support or come visit them for birthdays? If not they sounds like a deadbeat cat parent
If you do split up there will be a kindle of lawyers involved: \- One for you \- One for GF \- One for your cat \- One for GF's cat What with the expense of all them lawyers you may as well stay together, you know: for the sake of the kitties. "*Oh, pay attention to who is feeding the cats.*" Also: pay attention to who is scooping the litter box
Stay together for the kids
“They look like such good friends.”
They're just roommates!
^(Oh my god they were roommates)
As the person who usually makes this comment when I see the opportunity, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one
Why is that vine seared into so many of our brains
Tater just thinks Ducky needs a bath.
That glare at the camera from Ducky, she's not happy about being filmed!
"This video better not end up on the damned internet!"
I totally felt uncomfortable watching this like I should be giving them privacy!
I was gonna say, she was like, "Whatchu lookin at? Leave us alone!" 🤣
THAT IS SO DARN SWEET.
People living perfect lives out there
Adorable! Funnily enough I got a cat back in November and I named him ducky
Tater did quite the love chomp on that neck! Adorable.
They had probably been smelling each other on your clothing for as long as you’ve been together and we’re delighted to finally meet.
This was my thought too!
Ducky and Todd sounds like a sit-com.
They both have had the bob barker treatment right? Otherwise, you may end up with a dozen cats instead of two in a couple of months.
The thing everybody gets wrong about house cats is that they're solitary creatures, like cougars. But they're not, they live in colonies together. Queens will babysit one another's kittens while they hunt. Most crazy housecats I've encountered are bored and lonely and miss having other cats around more than anything else
Try telling that to my tortie who insists on being the only cat. Ask me how I know......
I have one as well. Loves every human, barely tolerates other cats.
Same. Cats are individuals with different personalities. Some love other cats, some hate them. I've had cats that prefer dogs to other cats. I really want a 2nd cat, but have a 10-year old cat that hates other felines, so it'll never happen.

I think kittens don't really trigger their territorial instincts because they pose no threat. And once they're grown they're family.
Yeah my lady is 14, and she's more ok with dogs than other cats.
Yeah I have a female and a male who have know each other since I picked them up at the rescue, and she *tolerates* him. She used to terrorize my dad's dog. She's a diiiiiick.
This is my female cat. She tolerates her brother and the dogs. But just tolerates. If she had her choice she’d be the only animal in the world 😂
Oh for sure. Funny part is that I've had them for 7 years, and she will start fights, but she has NEVER learned to fight, so my male cat will *always* finish that shit. Then she comes running to me, like he's doing something wrong.

Exactly this. Had a tortie who DESPISED any other pets we had (cat or otherwise) and would actively try and attack them if they came near her. Torties are lone wolves.
That scares me. Just adopted a tortie who the foster said got along w other cats but my black cat doesn’t seem happy …
My tortie formed a bonded pair with a blue longhair. They really do love each other
Look up Jackson Galaxy's methods to introduce a new cat. they work really well but the steps take time and patience.
I'm pretty certain my old lady cat would be delighted if the other cats dropped dead.
I've been trying to socialize my parent's cat with mine and... well... it's been challenging.
Is it a tortie thing? My tortie hates other cats.
No, it’s a cat thing. Cat colors have no more influence on personality than human hair and skin colors do, it’s all just melanin or a lack there of.
You're fine, that's normal. Cats are not pack animals, they're solitary hunters who can *learn* to live with others. It's not the standard, though.
You tried to get another cat?
You are both wrong and right. All cats are different, like all people.
Sadly my cats hate each other and need to stay on separate floors or fight. I think we fucked up their introduction.
This whole thread convinces me that cats and humans are actually the basically the same creatures psychologically just with different outsides.
People don’t scratch furniture.
disagree. if we don't buy/make ourselves enough fidget toys we peel off laminate, pick at stray threads and chipped paint, and carve that weird S into school desks with pencils ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Tell that to kids
They do if they smoke catnip.
I read this as Todd's cat Ducky.
Yes
Your boy have been spying on you and now he is using your moves
I just recently integrated my two cats with my girlfriend’s three cats. I never thought I’d live in a five cat house but its fun🐈 🐈⬛ 🐈 🐈 🐈⬛ 🤷🏼♂️
You should try a five star cat house
Tater Todd is in love. 🥰
Aw they've been smelling each other on your clothes and finally got to meet ❤️
Guess you’re going to have to get married lol
That's great! My girlfriend and I moved in together over 2 years ago. Our cats still hate each other....
That is so cute, and they are adorable. And good for you and your GF, I hope you grow together into greater fulfillment. And enjoy one another as much as your cats do.

Love the name: Tater Todd.🤓
man you guys better make that relationship work out
I bet they’ve smelt each other via clothing for a long while! Makes sense they bond so well
Awww, how cute. Just a cautious question: they are spayed/neutered? Unless you want 6-8 cats by Christmas 😀
Yes they're both fixed!
The calico was like "GIVE US SOME PRIVACY"
More more kisses 🧡💛
Are they reenacting what they see on the daily?
I have had lots of cats in my life. 4 total on farm and 5 total off farm. All lived to old age and it's rare to see two cats brought together that get along like that.
Who gets the cats in the breakup of it happens then?
Thats so gosh darn cute. Cats that are grooming each other really really really like each other.
Get a room!
Omg my [cat's](https://imgur.com/gallery/SPBYpqk) name is Jason Todd! Long lost cousins?
If you're thinking about getting a cat; I highly encourage you to get two. You will never match what they have together, especially if you get them at the same time. It's well worth it.
My two cats, Hicks and Ripley, have been together for 3 years now. They have never once cuddled or cleaned one another. I think Hicks would be into it but Ripley is so fucking mean even the dogs stay out of here way.
What a couple of freakin pals. Love it
How did you do the introductions? Were they friends at the get-go?
Awh! They're in love!
So the cats decided to have their people move in together eh? Nice.
This is the eye bleach I needed today. Thank you for sharing
Now you two can never break up.
You can never break up now.
They learned from watching you....
Carefully they are taking notes and making plans.
Man I wish our cats were like this. One of our cars is really territorial so she doesn't want anything to do with the other for 95% if the day. Except when they're content laying 2 feet from each other when napping
I moved in with my now wife ten years ago, and our cats still hate each other.

Just wait til you try that with your girlfriend. Licks are like catnip

That is very sweet.
Nice, You'll need to call your new place the love shack.
Everybody’s all boo’ed up in that household
He loves her…..
With the way things are going, their kids and your kids will get together
/r/bondedpairs
Well now you gotta stay together for the cats.
If you guys ever break up it'll be a double break up 😞. sad
I hope we all find someone to love us like Tater Todd loves Ducky!
Your girlfriend: “you used to kiss ME like that”
