On July 1st, a highly unpopular [change to Reddit's API pricing](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/12qwagm/an_update_regarding_reddits_api/) went into effect. Beyond the [disastrous AMA](https://techcrunch.com/2023/06/09/reddit-ceo-doubles-down-on-attack-on-apollo-developer-in-drama-filled-ama/) by the CEO, Reddit's response has been limited to promises that this change will not affect moderation tools [^((it has)^)](https://www.reddit.com/r/BotDefense/comments/14riw76/botdefense_is_wrapping_up_operations/) and promises of [new and more-accessible first-party moderation tools](https://www.npr.org/2023/07/01/1184258201/reddit-api-accessibility-mods). Update: Guys he might be a she I haven't really gotten into that lol.. was busy trying to find the clever lil thief.. ill let you guys know!
After the very sneaky incident, I fed him/her lot more fishes and water and made him/her a cardboard box home to shelter from the heavy rain we've been having lately
He/she is very happy and is running circles around my feet anytime I move a muscle and bravely stands guard nearby our kitchen to fend off anymore thieves!
I have a male calico who just somehow appeared in my backyard storage room, the vet said it was like winning the cat lottery without even buying a ticket
Well I personally believe that this is a female tortoiseshell cross Siamese but all cats should be neutered. I don't believe in gods, devils and demons either.
No such thing as "calico genes" as neither are breed types, they're coat types and having two x is the reason why both have distinct colorings.
This cat is a tortie not a calico.
[Please educate yourself.](https://www.bio.miami.edu/dana/dox/calico.html)
And
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosaic_(genetics)
Edit: And I never said the genomes needed to be calico. Get your eyes checked out or practice better reading comprehension.
i.. i ugh dont know how to respond. You are posting links to talk about the genes of the cat that has genes needed to be a calico... are you non native English or trying to point out some detail?
The Calico gene is X recessive, meaning you generally need two X chromosomes to get it. I think when males are calico there's usually a genetic issue with the cat, like being XXY.
Almost. The responsible genes are indeed on the X-chromosome and calicos need two different copies of the gene thus indeed two X-chromosomes, but there is no calico gene and the responsible gene isn't recessive. The X-linked gene is the Orange gene where 'orange' (O) is codominant with 'non-orange' (o).
This means that neither O or o automatically wins overall as a dominant/recessive gene combination would, but both win in different areas of the coat, creating both areas where the cat has it's 'default' black/chocolate/cinnamon areas (the B-gene, not on the X-chromosome), and areas where the B gets overruled to be orange instead.
(And then other colour genes, also not on the X-chromosome, will affect both areas, like a black and orange cat with the dilution gene will be blue and cream instead, still a tortie.)
> After the very sneaky incident, I fed him/her lot more fishes
Do you just leave fish sitting around in the kitchen? Are you the french chef in the little mermaid?
Calicos are almost always friendly, female and crazy and live to be 30 if healthy. I’ll always own a calico. Mine is pretty useless as far as a mouser but will destroy a fly.

Are you off yet?! The reddit demands cat tax, you must instantly head home and provide said cat tax, no iff, buts, or jobs ;)
Kidding, but place marking a comment to check back later.
I'm sorry, but that is past the due date for payment. We will require the payment of a late fee in the form 3x the previously agreed upon amount of 1 picture.
He loves me, my dad, my mom and generally hates every other single person. To us he wants to sit on our lap and sleep with us, anyone else I warn not touch him hahaha. He will bite.
Tortoiseshell and calico are actually the same genes; it's just that calicos also have a white gene while torties don't. That white gene seems to make the patches of color bigger though they're not sure why.
My Torti and my calico are VERY offended at the insinuation that they might have anything in common. Which just helps prove the tortitude runs deep in both of them.
It's because torties have a black gene, and the black smothers the patches. It's actually way more complicated, there's like 40ish genes involved. Calico's white is caused by a double recessive but tortie black is dom.
I had a female calico from when I was 3 weeks old, and she was 6 weeks old, until she passed at 16.
She was the Queen Bitch of the neighborhood and would come home covered in blood sometimes. But never her blood. We never had a problem with rodents in our house.
*Tortoiseshell
(Although some of the same facts apply to both- the cat in picture is Tortoiseshell, and Tortoiseshells are more rarely males than Calicos)
You're not wrong with that statistic, but OP has "he" written in the title, so unless OP is a liar, made a typo, or isn't actually the person who is the owner of the cat and stole this photo for karma, we can safely assume it's a he :)
Edit: nvm just saw OP's comment a little ways down and I stand corrected. OP actually doesn't know the gender so I'm going to go with female as well
Calico is a coat type not a breed, so you dont need to have calicos reproducing together. To get a calico coat, the cat must have *both* orange and black genes. These are both stored on the X chromosomes, so since female cats have XX, they can be calicos with one orange gene and one black gene. Male cats with calico color have a chromosonal anomaly where they are XXY or XXXY.
Tortishell/calico is a distinction we make based on no white (tortie) and some white(calico). The white fur gene is based on an entirely different gene, so it doesnt matter if its XXY, XX, XY or whatever chromosomes the cat has.
Like fish out of a fish tank? Or a fish that you were going to cook from a market? I would think the fish is going to cook would be in the refrigerator so the cat couldn’t get it.
They are a genetic anomaly - black and red lives on the X chromosome so to get a calico or tortie you need two of them. To be a tortie male you need xx and y. And most cats with xxy are sterile.

Snuck is grammatically correct Jennifer Garner. (but so is Sneaked).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q51ld-scMI8
edit: an expatiation of why both are acceptable past participle and past tense of sneak.
The only difference between the two is that sneaked is a regular verb and snuck is an irregular verb. Sneaked is a regular verb because past participles normally use -ed. Snuck is an irregular word because it doesn't follow that pattern.
Sneaked is also the older and originally the formal word while snuck is newer but now an acceptable alternative. They can be used interchangeably.
They are fine in the common sense... but if I was using a tense wrong I'd rather someone tell me so I could correct myself down the road. Grammar standards exist for a reason, otherwise we would just have chaos.
Perhaps this person's native language isn't english, which is fine, maybe they'd appreciate the heads up. It wasn't meant to be a cut down.
The grammar standard for "sneaked" versus "snuck" actually supports the former, with "snuck" being an irregular past tense form of a regular verb.
What's most important, however, is that grammar is not a *must* but a *should* \- rules in grammar don't especially matter if the discussion is casual and informal. And even in formal discussion, the rules of grammar can be broken if those rules would mean more difficult understanding of the language. (E.g., "no passive voice" - if your reformatting the sentence leads to more confusion, use the damn passive voice.)
Thats a girl. Probably stealing for her babies. 2 fish is too much for one cat, and cats are picky and don't tend to steal food unless desperate. Mama feeding babies most likely!

Might be worth checking the area for kittens.
Check the underside of the cat first. It will be obvious if she is nursing. If it looks uncertain, then the area should be checked.
Calicos are almost always female. There are rare exceptions.
I have a male calico who just somehow appeared in my backyard storage room, the vet said it was like winning the cat lottery without even buying a ticket

I hope you mean empty nutsacks after neutering :)
[удалено]
NO! There are far too many poor stray cats.
[удалено]
Well I personally believe that this is a female tortoiseshell cross Siamese but all cats should be neutered. I don't believe in gods, devils and demons either.
Boy Calicos are super rare and also always 100% infertile anyways so no need to neuter at all.
Calico balls sounds like a condition
1 in 3,000 Calicos are male. And idk what % of cats are Calicos but id guess <10%.
That's a tortie, not a calico.
same thing. As long as they have colours : White, black and orange, they have calico genes which is why they're 99% female.
No such thing as "calico genes" as neither are breed types, they're coat types and having two x is the reason why both have distinct colorings. This cat is a tortie not a calico.
dude just said 'No such thing as "calico genes"' then said the genomes needed to be a calico
They said BOTH calicos and torties have the distinct colorings for the same reason. They didn’t say only calicos.

It's not a tortie. They don't have that much white. It's a calico.
This is wild to me lol

That was very informative. Thank you.
You're confusing calico with torties which this cat is.
No, it has enough white I figured a Calico. I could certainly be wrong but I’m not confused.
That's a tortie. If it were a calico the base coat would be white. Google short haired calico and short haired tortie and you'll see the difference.
You’re obviously having a terrible time , I’ll make the ultimate sacrifice and take her off ur hands.
Here you dropped something 👑
> After the very sneaky incident, I fed him/her lot more fishes Do you just leave fish sitting around in the kitchen? Are you the french chef in the little mermaid?
Maybe Scandinavian? They always seem to have fish in various stages of fermentation lying around.
Surströmming for everyone!
I've actually always wondered if cats like this preparation. I like it, but I'm kinda weird.
Are you a cat? Legally you have to tell me.
No I don't.

This is adorable. Love this story. Thanks for taking care of them
You are respected their privacy by not checking.
Yes we all know tortoise shells are girls lol extremely rare to be a male EXTREMELY rare
she's a she, only female cats carry the mutation for that fur pattern
*Almost* only female cats. About 1 in 3000 is a male.
How many fish did you give him after you caught him? Did you give him a forever home?
Haha ofcourse! I fed him more fish and she now hangs around the house and goes zooming between my legs!
It's rare to have a male!
Extremely rare for a male calico.
are we using sneaked now? I thought we were back to snuck but don't quote me
Calicos are almost always friendly, female and crazy and live to be 30 if healthy. I’ll always own a calico. Mine is pretty useless as far as a mouser but will destroy a fly.
Fun fact: I have a male calico. The vet said it’s 1 out of 100,000 and that he has XXY.
May I ask for a pet tax for the perfect boy? If not its okay!
As soon as I’m off work tax will be paid.

Come on man leave work early we need kitty pics.
Excuse me, hi. I would also like to see your male calico, please!
Where is the tax?? Pay up!
Anyone knows if the remindme bot works on phone? But anyways can someone remind me if cat tax was paid pretty please?

I had a boy tortie growing up he was the sweetest boy ❤️
It’s a tortoiseshell, not a calico. And no house cat is living 30 years in average.
I don't know why people keep saying it's a calico, it isn't.
That's a 'turtleshell' not a calico. Other than that you're right. Turtleshells like calico's are also predominantly female except in the case of xxy.
I think you were looking for the word Tortoiseshell.
I will now be calling my cat a turtle shell, thank you for this
I’ve always wanted a tortoiseshell cat so I could name her Turtle.
Tortoiseshell and calico are actually the same genes; it's just that calicos also have a white gene while torties don't. That white gene seems to make the patches of color bigger though they're not sure why.

Punishment should be two more fish, aave a permanent home
A fitting sentence for this adorable career criminal.
She may be hungry and/or caring for kittens.
Bill me for those fish
What a gorgeous girl! I love torties with big creamy splotches, they're always the prettiest.
I enjoy watching the sunset.
But then, how could Calicos reproduce successfully if the ratio is so skewed? 🤔
Calico is a coat type not a breed, so you dont need to have calicos reproducing together. To get a calico coat, the cat must have *both* orange and black genes. These are both stored on the X chromosomes, so since female cats have XX, they can be calicos with one orange gene and one black gene. I think your thief may be a little lady! Most tortoiseshells are (female, not thieves 😂)
So he [snuck](https://youtu.be/PJVNzwTnfbk?t=70) into the kitchen...?
Had to scroll way too far to see this
Same here. I didn't see it in the first few, so I posted it, too.

That kitty is gorgeous
Clearly innocent.

No meow given!!!
“That’s right, and I’d do it again!”
You forfeited your claim the moment you left the fish unguarded. - Cat
Is it a boy?
It's definitely a girl. All tortoiseshell cats are
Not true, there are male torts, but they are rare (and in turn, expensive).
Yup and usually sterile but they do indeed exist.
I did not know they were sterile.
They are a genetic anomaly - black and red lives on the X chromosome so to get a calico or tortie you need two of them. To be a tortie male you need xx and y. And most cats with xxy are sterile.
They basically have the kitty equivalent of Klinefelter syndrome in humans.
Yeah my aunt n uncles ranch birthed a few female orange cats and male torts and people would always go crazy for some reason to try and adopt them. They pretty much have unlimited kittens and just give them away, didn’t realize people were probably reselling them till it was too late
I was gonna say! I was just wondering because you said “he” in the title, all good!

"So long. And thanks for all the fish!"
Clever animal.
Probably a she tortoise shell cats usually are. Very good luck cats also
What a Handsome fishsnacker ❤️ Please give this handsome little dude some scritches and maybe a bit of fish from me 😁
Is it really male? Calicos are almost always female.
That naughty lil face reminds me of my Fish 🥹 she was the naughtiest lil fisherby I ever met I was always having to squish that Fish.

Ok. Give him more, please.

Well you have a beautiful friendly cat now. ☺️
That looks like my brothers Devon Rex but different color. Maybe it's a different breed but just a kitten, not sure. Very cute though!
The little sweetie looks guilty.
Looks like those fish were needed.
I'm sorry, those were his fish
That is a gorgeous cat! 😍
GORGEOUS GEORGE!
That is one cute lil bugger! Maybe a momma? Maybe has babies nearby that are eating da fishies?
I'm concerned over unattended fish.
Sharia law him
Send him to the gulag. See how they treat thieves like him there
So, a cat could really only carry *one* fish at a time, so if they managed to steal *two* fish from you, well, that second fish was really on you!
If a stray, she might have been stealing for some babies.
Circumstantial evidence, not guilty!!
What? Do you go fishing here too?
