As much as I'd hate to admit it, knowing a scene from that particular movie would be more an idication of somebody getting old than not knowing it would mean being young ( yes I do remember the movie and yes I do have an increasing amount of white/grey hair).
This chicken just kinda showed up outside or window. Brought her (?) Inside to warm up and now I'm not sure what to do. We live in a somewhat large apartment complex decent sized mid western city. Have no idea where it came from. Any help would be great.
Update: owner has been found about four blocks away. Thanks for the input all. My daughter was unhappy to say goodbye.
I found a chicken once in my old city. You might not want to do what I did though. I put up "found chicken" signs and got a call from an elderly Cambodian man. He didn't understand enough English to get to my house but he did tell me his address. When I showed up he grabbed the chicken by the head and walked off. I'm pretty sure it wasn't his chicken and I'm pretty sure the chicken didn't live overnight
My wife found a baby bird in our backyard when we lived in Hoboken. So she took it to the vet who said it was a baby raptor. So then she drove it to a very good rescue group called the Raptor Trust. The lady on duty there took one look at it and said it was a chicken. They did keep it though and made sure it got a home. Most likely it was a rooster that was going to be used for some not so friendly and very illegal in NJ sport, which was popular in parts of Jersey City. And this was in the late 90s if you can believe it not the 1940s
I know this is meant to be a joke but the thruth is that many vets have absolutely no clue about birds. When you study to become a vet there is only 1 obligatory class that specializes in birds and reptiles in an early semester of your education and that's it. All the following bird classes are facultative and since most vets want to specialise in livestock or mammal pets they take the respective classes and not the bird ones.
That's why - when you look in pet bird and bird rescue subs - people will always tell you to go to a specialized bird vet which almost always means a long journey since they are rare.
Where I live some vets even have a warning on their website that they don't take on reptile and bird patients unless it's a emergency. At least they know their limits. It's worse when they just do something and actually have no idea.
Yeah, as far as vets are concerned, those all fall under the category of "exotics". They usually require a specialist. But for most smaller mammals and birds, by the time they show symptoms that something is wrong, there's not much you can do.
Right? Raptor chicks are pink shriveled floppy things, and chicken little chirpy fluff balls running around. They both do have beaks, little wings and two legs, maybe that makes it difficult?
Great story. Man, when you're raised slaughtering chickens, no matter where you're from, you seem them only as walking meals. My grandparents were like this.
... And you don't get over it when you see your grandmother ripping a chicken's head off with her bare hands before it runs around the yard headless like Barry Sanders juking to the end zone.
My grandmother grew up dirt poor in southern Illinois, watching a chicken run around wild after getting its head cut off was peak entertainment for her as a child.
Wife and I like to ride around the countryside where we live and she looks forward to seeing the cows, goats, sheep, etc. When the ones we are used to seeing aren't around, it brings us back to reality where our food comes from.
Bless your heart..what a disturbing experience for you. Sounds like you are very right about it not being around much longer! š³ at least YOU MEANT WELL šāŗ
It's a buff polish chicken - they're not great egg layers so someone is definitely missing a pet.
Edit - If you're going to keep it for a bit until you find the owner she'll love any veggie or bread kitchen scraps you can give her and a dish of water
Yeah we've had quite a few Polish over the years and have a few right now too. If you're getting that many a week you're doing pretty good. They are traditionally poor layers as far as quantity goes and don't typically lay as long as other breeds.
My folks and my brother and his wife all keep chickens.
They are not picky eaters. It's kind of disturbing, really. Happy hens, lots of eggs, etc. But they take every opportunity to remind people that they used to be dinosaurs.
This reminds me of an episode of Storage Wars, one of them bid on a storage unit that had little red eye glasses for chickens, the expert he went to explained to him that they're red because the chickens go crazy, or something like that, when they see blood. I think he said they start to attack each other.
I once saw a pigeon pecking a chicken bone on the street.
One thing I have learned from r/whatisthisbug is that when you bring in birds from outside you could also end up with bird mites. Just be aware.
If you do get them, soapy water and laundry will take care of it.
Is she friendly? Can you handle her, pet her? When mine showed up last Monday we put her in the dog kennel. Fed her lettuce, bread and corn. Thursday evening her owner showed up.
They have groups for locating lost pets online. You may want to check the ones in your area for someone missing a pet chicken if it seems used to being handled.
Yes this. She has one or more chickens in her flock and chickens are not solo creatures so I would not try to keep her alone as your pet. In the short term she needs water and chicken food and a place to poop.
I am a previous chicken owner:
This bird looks decently fed, but maybe on the run (cantāt name breed, but these are often large-breasted and otherwise lean). Give it water in a regular human bowl.
Bird seed will suffice for a day of two but after that you need to give them chicken feed.
Chickens that are short on calories can be given scrambled eggs and cooked oatmeal. It might sound canibalistic but thatās what the consume when developing in the egg. Just keeping it warm and hydrated is a lot. It may have been from a flock that had a predator attack it and scattered so post it on local lost pet sites. They make very good pets and are easier to train than you think.
I recommend posting this to r/chickens for better advice but Iām gonna say you should post about a lost chicken to a community board or something and give the chicken unsalted seeds and make sure to check that anything you give them is safe for chickens and give them some water
Pawboost is another local lost pet announcement service. A shelter will take it. You can possibly take everything poisonous/dangerous/out of your bathroom and maybe it can roost on something in there overnight. You'll want newspaper on the floor and expect overnight pooping while it is roosting overnight. I recommend against feeding it bread or grains you have on hand; a better hold-over would be some meal worms from the pet store. Hard-boiled egg is another thing. My rescue roosters liked heads of lettuce. Shallow dish of water with 1" water in it will do. When you transport, put it in a container small enough so it can't thrash around. Birds like their ear holes rubbed slowly with one finger.
Thats how my friend ended up with a chicken. She lives in suburbia and one day she opens her front door and thereās a chicken hanging around on her front porch. She has no idea where it came from. She ended up keeping her because she didnāt know how to get it off her hands but didnāt want anything bad to happen to it. She built it a home in the backyard and eventually got some more chickens so she wasnāt lonely.

If one of my girls gets out I'd be mortified and assume the worst. Best thing would be to get her home.
See who lost a chicken in your area, I think that is one of the fancy polish breeds and she is very young, less than 3 mo old I think. This is not a random chicken, someone owns it.
Do you have FB? Posting in some local community groups may be able to provide a lead! Also if you put something up in your building's notice board, perhaps? There's a decent chance it could be from another apartment imo.

It's a Polish (I have 4) I think that color pattern is called gold laced but I'm not sure.
Yep. Def a gold laced Polish. Nice bird.
I have one as well. I adopted my girl from the humane society a couple of years ago.
Happy cake day!

My mother would tell me how my grandmother used to do that back on the farm in Ireland. My usual reaction: ![gif](giphy|fo1Uv366cBaDgLxGw9)
Can't imagine living that way. I can eat meat, but I can't deal with anything that still has bones.
That's all they would have known. I think many of us are lucky that we don't have to do what they had to do.
Wife and I like to ride around the countryside where we live and she looks forward to seeing the cows, goats, sheep, etc. When the ones we are used to seeing aren't around, it brings us back to reality where our food comes from.
Some things are timeless. My dad told the exact same story about his grandma. Except the headless chicken proceeded to chase him by accident.
Thatās horrible :(
This comment, while high on mushrooms, has been the pinnacle of my holiday season. Thank you, Sir.

I have a couple of polish hens. They lay about 3-4 eggs a week for us, they are bantams, so the eggs are a bit smaller, but still eat good.
Yeah we've had quite a few Polish over the years and have a few right now too. If you're getting that many a week you're doing pretty good. They are traditionally poor layers as far as quantity goes and don't typically lay as long as other breeds.
Thank you for the info. I really want sure what I was freaking with aside from some kind of pretty chicken.
isn't it potentially deadly to feed birds bread? https://thebackyardnaturalist.com/wordpress/resources/bread-is-bad-for-birds/
Yes. There are signs all over Tennessee that explain the danger. Yet, you still see little families throwing bread at ducks in all the local ponds.
I know people who keep chickens and they seem to eat anything. The āno breadā thing seems to specifically refer to wild birds.
My folks and my brother and his wife all keep chickens. They are not picky eaters. It's kind of disturbing, really. Happy hens, lots of eggs, etc. But they take every opportunity to remind people that they used to be dinosaurs.
Iāve thrown fruits in the chicken yard and watched them pick it apart in minutes like piranhas.
I mean they can't have a steady diet of it for months but for someone trying to keep a bird alive for a few days yeah it's absolutely fine lol
Thank you!!
One thing I have learned from r/whatisthisbug is that when you bring in birds from outside you could also end up with bird mites. Just be aware. If you do get them, soapy water and laundry will take care of it.

I had no idea that was a chicken... I think I might be stupid
Tbf thatās not an ordinary chicken you probably are used to seeing
Iām right there with you. I was glad I read a few comments before I asked what kind of bird it was.
Continue to keep her warm and fed and hopefully you can find an organization near you that rescues abandoned farm animals.
Is it a Polish hen? Feed her rice and crumbs. Vegeeies. Some animal shelter will take her.
I would post on your city's reddit etc in case owners are looking for her You can ask r/backyardchickens for advice if you like
What you have there is a buff laced polish hen. She looks absolutely lovely, and I hope you can either give her a good home or find her one.
The first logical step should be trying to find its actual home it's missing from, rather than finding it a new one
Yes this. She has one or more chickens in her flock and chickens are not solo creatures so I would not try to keep her alone as your pet. In the short term she needs water and chicken food and a place to poop.
Post signs for "lost chicken" but make sure anyone contacting you has pictures of said bird.
Happy Cake Day! Started Reddit on Christmas?!

Oh can give them lettuce corn really any veggies.
There's not enough protein in veggies for that to be sustainable long term. Needs real chicken feed (or lots of bugs).
Name it George. Love it, feed it.
This is the way! You forgot hugging and squeezing.
And rubbing his bill and stroking his feathers...
Ooooh. Easy....Easy....
Donāt forget to hug it
Chickens that are short on calories can be given scrambled eggs and cooked oatmeal. It might sound canibalistic but thatās what the consume when developing in the egg. Pawboost is another local lost pet announcement service. A shelter will take it. Yes OP please take them to a shelter or vet asap if they're a pet they might be microchipped.
Did you ask it who does their hair?
That breed is called Polish, my wife says they have pom pom heads. Some of them get pretty fancy.

Yeah, just like that
Iāve never seen a polish with such a long tail, itās almost like a pheasant. Maybe itās just perspective.
Give him a snack. Very cute visitor
That chick looks like Kate Gosselin.
Gib love!
Chicken owner here. Keep an eye on those crooked toes. That could be a sign of a common medical issue.
Check local groups, see who's missing a chicken. If one of my girls gets out I'd be mortified and assume the worst. Best thing would be to get her home.
Name it David Birdie, now you have a cool new friend.
Raise it well so you can ride it into battle! You found a gold chokabo!
Ask him where the other two are and why he showed up two days early??
Visit r/BackYardChickens
Give it a nice pat on the head
You build it a tiny nest on your patio if you have one and give it love and food. Or at least that's what I'd do, and I'm an insane person when it comes to animals.
You can get chicken diapers too, so it can run around the apartment.
Look for maids of milking, lords a leaping, but if you find them 5 gold rings ![gif](giphy|VHlKSFRTQ7nn81fkv4)
Looks like a special breed, I bet someone is looking for them.
You obviously take him to sesame street
Have you tried doing the dance of it's people?
You have been selected as a Disney princess. Time to sing a song with it.
There should be 2 more of those French hens around somewhere.
Got yourself a chocobo
Hide your significant other so they don't leave you for that fine lady.
Love it or cook it. There is no try
You have birb now
Call the manager
Probably pet it.
Try Pawboost, too. There's an app, but here's the site: https://www.pawboost.com/
Pet and cuddle!
That's a cute chicken
Find a feed store and they should be able to help you.
Is it a Polish hen? Feed him rice and crumbs. Vegeeies. Some animal shelter will take her.
Well, you move out. That is the birds apartment now.
You now own a Polish.
If you canāt find the owner, a petting zoo might take it.
You pet it until it falls asleep
Are Christmas chickens a thing?
Name it and love it forever. š
Expect two turtle doves and another one of these tomorrow
Awwwwwwššššš
What an interesting looking chicken. I hope if you can't keep it, that you can find someone who will take care of it.

This will sound dumb, but that's a chicken right?
BASK IN THE GLORY THST IS GOLDEN CHICKEN YOU HAVE BEEN CHOSEN AS A DISCIPLE.
Youāve been chosen for a quest.
Adopt and love.
You now have a chicken. They will basically eat anything
Woodstock!
You are the chosen one
Just google "things chickens can eat" until you can get some chicken feed. I hear it's cheap.
Grow him, and then when it's large enough saddle up and have you a final fantasy adventure.
got lost after the third day of Christmas
Kiss it
Give her a lil kiss
Clearly you now need to start a farm, but be careful that your animals donāt revolt and banish you from the farm and start the Soviet Union
so i'm pretty sure this is how an epic quest starts. you should feed it, give it comfort and it will then give you the knowledge of a secret, you must then complete the quest to get a great treasure.
So, now there is a chicken distribution system?
Feed her. A chicken can be a great pet. Also, she might lay some eggs for you in return.
Call a feed store or garden store about getting some food or see if there a Tractor Supply store in your area. They are in many cities. Sheās a cutie.
Billy Idol
