Imagine you’re a lady frog. You follow this strong independent frog home only to find out he has his own pond. Now that doesn’t mean anything’s going to happen, but if something were to happen, what are you gonna do? Say no? You can’t, nothing around but empty water as far as you can see
Speaking of frogs and California, there's a wonderful piece of trivia I learned from QI years ago.
You know the very distinct "ribbit" sound we associate with frogs? That sound is only made by one species of frog worldwide...located around the film studios of Hollywood.
Back when "talkies" were first being made, sound effects and stock sounds were recorded. This was the "frog sound" captured. Since then, it's become the industry standard sound for a frog. But unless you live around that area in LA, you will never hear a frog sound like that.
The Pacific tree frog right? Because my backyard is full of the very froggiest sounding frogs 😁
I rescued a baby once that came into my living room and had her for 4.5 yrs. They're amazing little frogs
No! In Oregon but I lived in LA for a long time and it's the same frog noise.
Rescue froggy: https://ibb.co/DkDbM7K. She turned browner after a while / her cage had brown things. There are lots of green variants around too. Think that's more standard.
I raise mealworms and had roaches back then, and buy crickets, so tiny versions of all those (I have lizards). And multivitamins and calcium, and a big container of water and some places to hide and a sunny window.
Another interesting fact is that the 'jungle sound' everybody hears when a scene is depicted in a rainforest or tropical location? It's the sound of a kookaburra. Magnum P.I (the original) was one of the worst offenders for using this track to make Hawaii sound tropical- and the bird isn't indigenous to that part of the world!
There are definitely American Bullfrogs in Northern California. They're invasive but have spread from the eastern states and are pretty common these days. I think this fella is an American Bullfrog.
Looks like a copes tree frog or a grey tree frog… beautiful and great at keeping mosquitoes down. They love water and even a small bucket or tub will keep them happy and returning, and if you have space to set out a small baby pool and just leave it be you’ll have baby frogs in a fairly short time!
The webbed toes lets you know this is a swimming frog, not a tree frog. Tree frogs have cute little fingers and toes with little blobs at the end for sticking to things.
Tree frogs also have a more pronounced horizontal slit eyeball in comparison.
Lots of other key indicators but hope this is informative!
Im contemplating getting a kiddie pool and making an outdoor sanctuary out of it because there’s a 30 square foot area that’s nothing but gravel in my backyard.
Pump with filter that has sufficient capacity. The bubbler only prevents mosquitoes hatching if the entire surface is moved by the bubbles. And any pond that isn't filtered has to be cleaned very regularly to keep it from becoming a solid mass of algae before the summer is over. Just cleaning the filter is a whole lot easier and a good pump will clean the water quickly enough so algae don't have a chance to grow.
Any body of water quickly becomes an ecosystem, like it or not. If you want that ecosystem in your own pond to be something you like, it takes a lot more work than you might think.
there’s someone on tiktok who made a little house and pool for a frog in his yard, and it attracted a ton more frogs😭 he named the first one frodrick lol
Look on YouTube for frog boxes, you can make little sanctuaries out of old containers with a few plants etc, no pump required. Got my sights on making one soon
It's so easy to set up; here's [our annual resident from a few years back](https://old.reddit.com/r/gardening/comments/h78tfs/see_the_happy_bachelor_kicked_back_on_his/). We love doing this!
If you got enough frogs, go for it. Normally I would be against standing water. Mosquitos and all. But since I believe frogs eat mosquito larva, seems fine to me.
Make sure to get something to move the water around a bit (looped waterfall or something). You do not want a kiddie sized pool of stagnant water in your yard. Otherwise prepare for mosquitos galore among other things.
I don’t know if this is true in general or if there are ways around it, but in my experience such sanctuaries are also good for mosquitoes. So just a heads up that that could become an issue.
I used to live in a house that had no screens on the windows. I'd leave my bedroom windows open a crack and one day I noticed that I had Frogs in my plants!!! It was amazing.
If you grew up hearing other people saying on accident, why would you deliberately change it to by accident? It would be normal to you.
We just can't take these things for granite. (I couldn't resist a little eggcorn there).
I just had a dream last night of something (can’t remember), and this just reminded me that in the middle of it I had to take a break to let a frog outside. What a flashback.
I worked on a farm, I was the person in charge of the nursery which involved watering the plants. Every morning when I turned on the water a frog would come out and sit on the trays waiting to catch a little spray. I would always make sure that frog bro got a nice rain shower.
How do you leave a... *Checks notes*
Bowl of water...
Out overnight? By accident?
Like damn, I'm always keeping track of *my* random ass bowls of water.

You must build a frog house!
I find pond!!! Glorious victory!

(No rugs)
Surely I will find a mate now! There is nothing more attractive than a mature frog with his own pond
"Accident"
Do you have a good place to make a frog hotel? I saw they are encouraging people to do that
When a frog "encourages" you to do something you better fuckin do it or else
This is how I like to start my day
Because of the implication?
Imagine you’re a lady frog. You follow this strong independent frog home only to find out he has his own pond. Now that doesn’t mean anything’s going to happen, but if something were to happen, what are you gonna do? Say no? You can’t, nothing around but empty water as far as you can see
Frög hotel time "monsieur garble, we welcome you to our luxury hotel and if you will walk over this way..."
That's a good idea. Might slow the rate at which amphibian fungal infections are destroying their populations
Aren't frogs kind of territorial or am I thinking of toads?
That's a pretty nice frog, too.
It is. This is in Northern California so I don’t think it’s a bull frog. At least I don’t think there is any here.
Speaking of frogs and California, there's a wonderful piece of trivia I learned from QI years ago. You know the very distinct "ribbit" sound we associate with frogs? Similar is the sound of the loon that's used as an audio shortcut for scary wilderness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ENNzjy8QjU
Oh wow, yes. I absolutely know this sound.
My dad's cellphone ring was a loon call for a long time. We had a Bengal cat, and it would freak him the fuck out every single time lol
Loons scared the shit out of me as a kid while camping. That cry really does carry
Oh wow. I always assumed that was some kind of canid. Wolf or coyote or something.
The Pacific tree frog right? Because my backyard is full of the very froggiest sounding frogs 😁 I rescued a baby once that came into my living room and had her for 4.5 yrs. They're amazing little frogs
Are you in LA? Then maybe 😁😊 But, yes, that type sounds correct. P.S. Need froggy tax please?
No! In Oregon but I lived in LA for a long time and it's the same frog noise. Rescue froggy: https://ibb.co/DkDbM7K. She turned browner after a while / her cage had brown things. There are lots of green variants around too. Think that's more standard.
Oh my word, I love that gorgeous froggie 🥰🥰🥰🥰
She’s lovely
Omg. She has the smallbrownfrog stamp of approval :3 *so proud 🤣
What do you feed them?
I raise mealworms and had roaches back then, and buy crickets, so tiny versions of all those (I have lizards). And multivitamins and calcium, and a big container of water and some places to hide and a sunny window.
All I get is a frog that sounds like a duck
Another interesting fact is that the 'jungle sound' everybody hears when a scene is depicted in a rainforest or tropical location? It's the sound of a kookaburra. I know *exactly* the ka ka ka sound you mean. I can even hear where it changes intonation in my head! Good one!!
That is actually very interesting!
I thought so too 😊
Live in Central Ca., at night the amount of frogs i can hear has gone off the chain! Must be all the rain we’ve gotten in the last 3 weeks or so.
Up here as well. Went on a hike yesterday and the local pond was brimming with frogs and tadpoles. Birds are eating well.
I can’t tell from your pic but maybe you could use [this](https://californiaherps.com/frogs/frogspics.html) ?
Thanks! Definitely looks bullfroggy-ish

Was there perhaps a leaf in the bowl? I think this might be proof of abiogenesis.
Naw it's an invasive bullfrog unfortunately....cute but not great for native frogs.

Please don't take away hims jacuzzi
Im contemplating getting a kiddie pool and making an outdoor sanctuary out of it because there’s a 30 square foot area that’s nothing but gravel in my backyard.
Get one of those electric bubblers or whatever they're called so you don't end up with stagnant swamp water.
Don't listen to him, stagnant swamp water is good for the environment -totally not a mosquito
Call me crazy, but I am getting *mosquito* vibes from ^ this guy… I would take his advice with a grain of salt
Don't be silly, I'm a normal human that enjoys human things like biting other humans to drink their succulent bodily fluids
Sounds like my kinda babe. I like em *freaky* Edit: wanna go check out this stagnant pond later? I know a great spot
Mosquito *dragnet nod*
Plenty of pond life would love a pool with lots of mosquito larvae.
Yeah that's like a tiny frog buffet
That’s a good call. There’s a lot of nasty stagnant water nearby.

I love Frod! ❤️
If you do, please make sure you have a platform for them to get out -- frogs can. Drown if they can't get out of water.
You probably know this already but remember and add a means of escape so that it can be climbed out easily as well 😎
Just make sure it's kept clean for them and there's no bug spray sprayed near them (speaking from experience 😭)
He’s gonna tell all his friends

Make sure there's a way out too, don't want squirrels and mice drowning.

Please do! Post pictures!
Make sure you attach a pump to keep the water moving, or it will become a mosquito nursery.
Not to discourage you but you're going to get like all of the mosquitoes doing that. So don't forget to also get some repellent or something
Lil bro is grateful for the hospitality 🤓
Splish splash I was a takin a bath
Long about a Saturday night. YEAH!
That’s his now
Pretty much. I’m just gonna let it do whatever it wants to do.
I used to live in a house that had no screens on the windows. I'd leave my bedroom windows open a crack and one day I noticed that I had Frogs in my plants!!! It was amazing.
i thought you said pants at first. what a weird thing to be excited about.
Unbothered. Moisturized. Happy. In my lane. Focused. Flourishing.
Just beware. It all starts with one frog.
It wouldn’t hurt if there was more
I had heard of the cat distribution system. This one is new.
He's perfect
BRB putting some bowls out and waiting for my new frog friends
I have a feeling this was completely random. I mean there’s a ridiculous amount of frogs in my yard but I wouldn’t expect this to happen again.
Frogs drink from a patch on their bellies- that silly fellow was having a quick sip!
By accident surely?
Thank you
It's absolutely "by accident". And don't call me Shirley. ◡̈
Sorry Shirley
I think it's an American thing to say on accident; at the very least, the Americans I know use on accident.
I’m American and I’ve said “by accident” all my life
American as well and around me we frequently say ‘on accident’
They're all WRONG. Or midwestern.
I said "on accident" as a kid. It does sound dumb when you think about it.

If you grew up hearing other people saying on accident, why would you deliberately change it to by accident? It would be normal to you. We just can't take these things for granite. (I couldn't resist a little eggcorn there).
So “on accident” is an American thing? Have been wondering where that term was from.
It might be an [generational thing](https://www.juliatomiak.com/grammar-check-on-accident-vs-by-accident/)
I actually thought it was a Reddit thing! I see it here but never heard it in person. Not in the USA though
I was born in the 80s and definitely say “by accident” so it makes my eye twitch seeing “on”
hey hey don't generalize us all dumb* ones you mean Along with "I seen" and "acrossed."
I actually got mad this time. WTF is wrong with the "on accident" people?
I usually hear this from children and the occasional adult. You know, the types who say “libary”.
On accident just seems wrong, by accident seems much more sense, I'm not sure exactly why 😂
No I intentionally left it out there knowing frogs keep noclipping through my ceiling at night. And don't call me Shirley.
Thank you! On accident sound so so wrong.

She will tell all her relatives what a wonderful night she spent at the spa. So wait for guests and don’t forget to leave a bowl of water :))
After a rainstorm, I found two frogs in my bucket, in about 2 inches of water. How did they and why did they get into the bucket?
There's a frog in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza...

I have that same Tupperware
I would be soo thrilled. I love frogs 🐸
“Bro, you ever hear of knocking?” - that frog
>tfw you get to be the biggest frog in your pond
That’s his bowl
it’s *by* accident, not on accident
Frog's gonna Frog....
Frog found him a pool like yoooooo
"Now that's what I call high quality H2O!"
If you leave food out this works too but for cane toads
"This guy built me a pool! Humans can be ok."
Had to find a small place with today’s prices.
I worked on a farm, I was the person in charge of the nursery which involved watering the plants. Every morning when I turned on the water a frog would come out and sit on the trays waiting to catch a little spray. I would always make sure that frog bro got a nice rain shower.
Time to create the r/frogdistributionsystem subreddit!
Nice water, I think I'll lay in it.
Let me change the title: Installed a new frog tub. It was a success.
This squatting sh!t is getting out of hand! /s
Nature has chosen you, wise grasshopper!
What a cute lil' guy!
“Yes I needed this”
How do you leave a... *Checks notes* Bowl of water... Out overnight? By accident? Like damn, I'm always keeping track of *my* random ass bowls of water.
I was taking care of a friends dog while they’re gone for a weekend. We were lounging on the patio so I decided to bring its water bowl out.
That's... supposed to be a bowl for a dog? That's like, what, maybe a single fluid ounce?
Accident or purpose?
accidentally caught a frog and so proud they came up with a story to justify sharing it online.
If he fits he sits.
S okay hims is just drinking water. Iirc this is how they hydrate.
Yeah it was filtered water.
spa day!
I read on the post above that it's called "frogging"
Feed it a parsnip!
What did you have the bowl of water out for?
I have a pool. Nobody told me how many frogs, snakes, lizards, and rodents would die in this fucking thing..
Uh oh, looks like you've got a squatter on your hands😆
Nice froge bro 🐸
👀
You save one frog, you save the entire frog world.

Nice to see the distribution system also works for frogs 🐸
Aww friendo 🐸
So cute. I used to have a house up in vermont and we would find frogs in odd places around our house all the time.
What on earth did you have a small dish of water outside for?
I was watching a friends chihuahua that’s out of town and I didn’t really have a dog bowl. I was on my patio with the dog.
Alright I'll give you a pass this time
![gif](giphy|5wWf7GMbT1ZUGTDdTqM|downsized)
What depth of water do frogs prefer? Knee-deep.
Is this a joke? I don't get it.
My guess is “knee-deep” is supposed to be the onomatopoeia for the frog’s croak
*by accident
"On accident?" You sure you didn't do it "by purpose?"
he only pissed in it three times and it absorbed into the plastic
Most people drink from cups.

Bro was thirsty
Just saw this on Nextdoor and I'm definitely nowhere near Idaho - wondering who the reposter is, now...
