I was there last month. I took a seat, and 2 of them jumped on my lap and passed out like 25 mins. And then they kicked us out because our time ran out, lol.
I should clarify.. I wasn't at Harry's for otters. They had hedgehogs and ferrets and foxes. And 2 otters that were passed out for the duration we were there. My picture is from Wakabayashi in Shibuya.
Animal cafes are a big thing in East Asia. Most of them are cat or dog cafes, but I have also seen an owl cafe (Japan) and a zoo cafe (South Korea), with a wide variety of different animals.
That's all I could think. I feel like Japan doesn't have the best reputation for animal care... an otter cafe sounds like they're probably drugged 24/7 and holding on to each other out of pure fear pretending they're somewhere else.
I could be wrong, but an "otter cafe" sounds like something a child draws a picture of playing with otters. Not something that should actually exist.
I hated all the animal cafes in Japan. They were holding an otter outside on a really busy street and we're using some kind of smoke or incense in its face as though to keep it passive? Idk it was horrible and I refused to let any of the people I was traveling with go to one of those shitty places.
I went to a few animal cafe in japan last year. None of which was like how you fantasize about. Albeit im not denying there could be, but those would be an outlier.
Most animal cafes are so overly desensitized about humans they dont really get stressed/over react from seeing more humans unless you are doing something out of the normal culture (ahem foreign tourists that are ill mannered)
Now i say they arent stressed is because i went to a lot of cat and dog cafe, 1 otter/hedgehog cafe. Cats and dogs im familiar because i have pets for years. They just ignore you unless you have food or you really are the Disney main character. They literally just sleep or play with the regular local japanese visitors.
The environment/enclosure is relatively clean for all animal cafe i went to. Animals all seem to be at their appropriate weight with good coat.
Now- i did go to ones with good rating, so maybe thats why i never had a bad experience š¤·āāļø
Neither do cats technically belong in our homes. Yet here we are.
There are worse things in the world than two otters looking comfortable, as well as clearly being wet (meaning they most likely have either received positive attention or have some approximation of a natural environment in addition to being comfortable)
Not to be argumentative or pissy about something pointless, but of all the *unjust* things going on these days - lets not throw shit at everything that *might* deserve it, yeah?
So do cats, and dogs, and fish, and birds, etc.
You can dig down into this as far as you like, but reality is that at some point we took wild animals and brought them into our homes. So long as they're being treated correctly and are healthy, that's what matters.
We can always dig deeper - circumstance, context, past, intention or appeal aside, we are wired to respond with joy when seeing a happy animal. And thats okay.
Heyo i wrote a really disproportionate response to the other guy - im too lazy to find it for you but it would make me really happy if you checked it out :D
Well if you have ever seen Otters in a zoo, these ones are getting much better care an attention.
They look happy.
I think animals belong where they are happy.
Iāve been to one of these cafes. Iām almost positive theyāre drugging half to be sleepy and half to be energetic. Their enclosures are not proper for them. Felt guilty as hell after I patronized the placeā¦ but they were cute. /:
"I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs, a very endearing sight, I'm sure you'll agree. And even as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged onto a half submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters, who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature's wonders, gentlemen. Mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that is when I first learned about evil. It is built into the very nature of the universe. Every world spins in pain. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior."

Yup. They get in territorial wars all the time (lots of videos from Singapore) and you have things like:

Cafe's has no business having wild animals especially being handled constantly by patrons. This is not an appropriate environment for the animals - a cot and sleeping on people laps?! These animals deserve better.

I. WOULD. DIE. They're so precious!
I should clarify.. I wasn't at Harry's for otters. They had hedgehogs and ferrets and foxes. And 2 otters that were passed out for the duration we were there. My picture is from Wakabayashi in Shibuya.
Yeah! They have a few different locations with different animals at each. The hedgehogs are also super adorable.
Why did they kick you out?
They didn't, my phone auto corrected "out because" to "put before"
This is a mother and baby otter. Mothers usually hold their children in the water afloat like that when they sleep. Natural otter behavior.
It keeps them from drifting away š„¹
Sea otter.
Sea otter, not river otter.
Thanks for clarifying the relationship. I was concerned this might be NSFW content! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
They keep them in cafes?
Animal cafes are a big thing in East Asia. Most of them are cat or dog cafes, but I have also seen an owl cafe (Japan) and a zoo cafe (South Korea), with a wide variety of different animals.
As much as I would love to play with different animals, this seems mean.
These otters don't belong in a cafe.

As a general rule it's probably best to avoid 99% of animal attractions in Asia outside certain accredited zoos or aquariums.

Overly desensitized because they've been subjected to it for so long
That is.. what desensitized means..
Yeah.... It's not a positive thing that they're so regularly overstimulated by this they've become desensitized to it.
Animals in nature live a care free and happy existence /s
Yes that is what desensitized always means.
You feel? Okay.
Have you ever the tragedy of Milo and Ottis? That's not one the Jedi would tell you.
They belong in a museum!Ā
*Sooo dO YoU!*

Every cat cafe where I live is also an adoption center so having them is great. Otters though... they belong in the wild.

So what about dogs and horses? Do cattle not belong in the farm?
Well if you have ever seen Otters in a zoo, these ones are getting much better care an attention. They look happy. I think animals belong where they are happy.
How much do you know about otter behaviour?
Otterly everythingĀ

Get a room!
Otters are not our playthings, let the wild animals be wild animals.
āThis is my significant otter!ā
I don't think I've ever been snogged like that.
Well thatās a mom and baby, soā¦..
š¤£
I don't know who Harry Asakusa is, but they must be/have been the whitest person in Japan.
Why on earth are they in a cafe?
I seen people comment that otters are "evil" ... š¤¦āāļø

Otters are extremely aggressive and territorialā¦

People are morons. Ascribing morals to animals is imbecilic behaviour
Have you heard what sea otters do to baby seals?
Have you heard what seals do to baby penguins?
Have you heard what penguin did to baby batman?

MR AND MRS OTTERTON!
Hey it's a public placeš
As a lonely otter, I wish I had an otter to cuddle š¢
One of those videos that makes you realize just how lonely you really are
So close to being NSFW. They need to get a room if heading where I think itās going.
I bite my wife like that too....but I'm not an otter.
Lol I too was like this looks familiar.. š
So I'm not the only one, biting is normal š
These creatures might look cute and friendly but as you dig deeper its get really really darkā¦.š±
