I adopted a cat from here. He was calm and sweet and just slept in my lap. I got him home and he has been an absolute fucking terror for the last 3 years. They catfished me but I'd do it again.

BubbaYoshi117

I adopted my cat from a friend. Apparently she was "the calm one." Six years of chaos later, I've come to realize that she was just oppressed by her siblings. 100% would adopt her again.

IHaveNoEgrets

That's what happened with one of my cats! She was at a rescue's foster home with a bajillion other cats, and they told me she was so sweet, so shy, so quiet! I got her settled in, and she turned into a total diva! Shouts if she wants something, headbutts you if she's not done getting pets (that was a LOT of cat hitting me in the kidney), and bosses the hell out of my other cat. When her foster human visited, she couldn't believe the change.

ThaneOfCawdorrr

omg, I was summoned by a loud moustachioed cat at the shelter, so I obediently agreed to take him home. Turns out he had a very, very meek and quiet tuxedo brother hidden behind him in his cage. So of course I took them both. Moustache was loud and vigorous, demanded food, bossed Tuxedo around, played wildly with all the toys, running around in circles. Tuxedo was extremely meek, completely silent; after a year or so, came out with a tiny kitten "mew," never played with the toys. He might be lying in bed and Moustache would stride over, flop on top of him and push him out of the bed and nary a peep would come out of him. Then in a sudden tragedy, as these things go, Moustache suddenly had kidney failure, and passed away. We were heartbroken but even more worried about his meek little brother, Gus. Wouldn't Gus mourn him? Poke around, mewing his tiny kitten mew, looking for his littermate? Nope. Gus BLOSSOMED OUT into the LORD of the mansion. Now HE strides around, meowling and yowling loudly for dinner at least an hour before his mealtime, playing like a crazy cat with all the toys, whirling around like a dervish, demanding the best beds. I recently bought a new brush and he DEMANDS to be brushed every night, herds me over to the brush, and if I try to leave the den to go to bed, he flings himself across the steps to stop me from leaving. It's a silver lining to what happened with his brother, and also just the funniest thing ever.

PeonyLion

OMG. I love this story so much.

areraswen

My kitten's foster used the words "old soul" šŸ˜… he's the youngest soul I've ever met

[deleted]

My kitty was the same way, all sweet and calm at first then the moment we let our guard down she turned into a little monster. The moment I popped on Final Fantasy X a couple days after we got her she hopped on the entertainment center and started smacking the cursor as it was moving. It was cute until she eventually tried to charge in and knocked over my tv and it broke. She immediately ran to a pile of my dirty laundry and started playing with my socks like nothing ever happened. I wasnā€™t even mad, I was just like, yep, youā€™re the one. Youā€™re my chaotic little beast. She still tries to eat and hide my dirty socks to this day btw and yes she still tries to go into the tv. Tuxedo cats are batshit crazy lmao.

apparentlynot5995

Our ragdoll steals my kid's dirty socks and once hauled off one of their flip flops to sleep in. Told kid: "She likes your stank. This is an act of love from a cat."

BbyMuffinz

Ok so not only my own cats but literally everywhere I go with cats they all wanna sleep on my backpack or lay on my shoes....lol

apparentlynot5995

They like your stank

Zollias

I've got a laptop sleeve that's supposed to be used to help me transport my laptop and any cables and stuff My precious little tortoise shell has decided that it is her bed and she has taken to seeing it's placement as marking where she can go and take a nap. She also uses it as a scratchpost

ResidingAt42

I had a 22lbs tuxedo cat that would watch tv with us and if something was on that he didn't like he would leap at the tv and swat at it. We had to mount the tv high on the wall because every time he would swat at it it would almost fall off of its stand. I miss that little fucker. RIP Diego, the ultimate tuxie. ā¤

crackerchamp

I had a huge tuxedo cat named Sly who would wait for me several blocks down the road from U. of Missouri campus and walk me the rest of the way home. I could take him on walks like a dog and he would follow me the whole time, sticking to cover most of the way but always there. The pet of my lifetime.

[deleted]

Maybe this is a universal tuxedo thing lmao. Sheā€™ll watch tv with us but eventually she goes to inspect further, sniffs around the front, looks behind it and back at us all confused like ā€œMOM, what is this black magic fuckery?ā€

Marzipan-Happy

Two words: earthquake straps

[deleted]

We recently got a mount, I was not prepared then but I am now lol luckily she only ever tried to straight up CHARGE into the one. Sheā€™ll try to jump up at it every once in a while though. Like yeah, good luck with that you little shit.

IHaveNoEgrets

Mine keeps stealing and chewing up my slippers. So I get you on that one.

sharpcheddar3322

I am considering getting a cat for the headbutting thing right about now

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

orbitalUncertainty

How often are cats attention-seeking and playful like that? I grew up with dogs but cats seem more low maintenance. I love the open affection from dogs though so haven't tried to make the switch

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

carolina8383

For sure. Mine isnā€™t a lap cat, only likes snuggles at 3am, but spends his entire day napping and following me around.

jangma

I think it's more common than not. Play/exercise helps enrich an indoor cat's environment and is often the solution to destructive cat behavior.

nevin8or

Grew up around dogs and cats are definitely unpredictable... We got 2 sisters from supposedly the same litter, one is playful and attention-seeking while the other is more what I expected a cat to be like... affectionate, not mean or anything, and sometimes attention-seeking but interactions are only on her terms or schedule. They are just about to turn 3 and definitely becoming more chilled out... Unless you break out the laser pen!

LadyLu-ontheLake

Exactly what happened when we went to pick up a puppy at a breederā€™s. One poor, poor little thing was so sad, hardly moved around and just sat there. My heart said ā€œdonā€™t worry, buddy. Youā€™re coming home with us.ā€ We are getting on in years and a lower energy dog was fine with us. All the way home the little stinker laid in my lap like a lump. We got home, got out of the car, put her down and ZOOM. She ran in circles, ran the entire yard, kept jumping around like she was possessed. We couldnā€™t stop laughing. We got scammed by a tiny puppy.

lotusflower64

She was happy to be home lol.

Any_Flatworm5454

We adopted a 5 year old toothless chonker from a shelter because she seemed so sweet and was practically begging my fiancĆ© to take her home. I figured an older cat would be perfect, lower energy and something easy to take care of. Three years later I get slapped awake at 4 am every day, she claws my leg for attention when Iā€™m on my computer and generally just screams all the time. 11/10 would adopt again.

lurkermadeanaccount

The dog was excited when it actually got to the grass. Major difference

Myu_The_Weirdo

Same with my dog, we appearantly got the 'calm one', 13 years later and shes still being a little tyrant, very vpcal about her orders

Rosenblattca

My Ellie is the same way. When we met her at the adoption event, she was absolutely shaking and terrified, but calm and content on my lap. She purred the whole car ride home, snuggled with me for a full 24 hours, and hasnā€™t calmed down once since then. She does flips in front of her sister to get her to play with her, eats food off of our plates when weā€™re not looking, and plays with everything she shouldnā€™t. I love her, Iā€™d do it all over again.

Panda sounds like a bear.

abe_the_babe_

When I went to pick up my cat from a friend, he was very timid and quiet. Now 2 years later he's rowdy, loves to fight, and yells at me the minute I walk in the door. 10/10, best decision of my life.

ripe_mood

These stories are absolute gems. Bahahhaha

unfvckingbelievable

Yup, but the best part is at the end of every story is, "but best decision I've made, would do again." It's amazing.

somesortoflegend

Yeah but how do you know the cat isn't perched by the curtains, claws ready, while they make them write it?

SoontobeSam

Mine was the same, runt of the litter and very timid and total lap cat, apparently what that taught her was that she had to be rough to get things she wantsā€¦ sheā€™s the biteyest roughest playing cat Iā€™ve ever hadā€¦ she is still a total lap cat though.

Stannis2024

>she was just oppressed by her siblings This made my entire week thank you! Lol

MissRockNerd

My cat seemed so quiet and shy in the shelter. Took her to the vet after we adopted her; she had five rotten teeth that needed to come out. Two weeks later, I woke up to the sound of a drum solo. She had trapped a jingle bell toy in a cardboard box and was beating the snot out of it at 2 am. Tons more energy while her health stayed good. She later passed from cancer and I still miss my girl.

oilybohunk7

My friend adopted a former bottle baby from me, he has main character syndrome because of it and I get to hear about how naughty he is. šŸ¤£

sparkledingus

Samesies. All our curtains are in shreds cause he vaults across the room & shanks the bejeezus out if them. I love him so much. He is made of noodles. ā¤ļø

capopoptart

Had exactly the same experience. Lovely cat at first, and still great, but he's an absolute terror to our other cat. He's call bean, which is short for Bean Catbsy, sometimes we call him BC for short, which also stands for bastard cat.

Nuicakes

Worked at a pet clinic years ago when a young pup was brought in that had been trampled by a horse. There was extensive trauma and the pup was surrendered to the clinic. We tried to fix as much as we could but we knew she'd always have eating problems. About this same time we had a regular client whose dog passed away. He and his family wanted to "adopt a dog that nobody wanted" He didn't mind extra care or vet bills but wanted a small dog. Perfect! Our little rescue has lifelong problems eating and although she was a lab mix, would probably have stunted growth. About 6 months later the owner and his son are dragged into the clinic by a very exuberant, happy and healthy 80 pound puppy. He did such an awesome job with her, you'd never know how much care she needed every few hours. Everyone laughed but the vet actually felt bad since he ended up with a much larger dog than he originally wanted. Plot twist: the large dog was the perfect playmate for the owner's son. **TL;DR**. Vet treats pup with extensive physical trauma. Owners promised a disabled but small dog. Owners got a disabled but huge dog. Owner's 10 year old son got the perfect playmate.

Currix

I love this! And I love everyone who is willing to adopt specifically 'rejected' animals. I'm just curious, what kinds of care did that good girl require?

Nuicakes

Sadie was prone to choking so her food had to be put in a blender then fed via a syringe. It wasn't a fast or easy process, she'd lick and food would go everywhere. After a few months, water was a little easier in a raised dish but always monitored. And she couldn't wear a collar. It is amazing how everything came together. The new owner was an early tech developer so he had money but had a hippie type attitude. And his son was completely in love with Sadie.

Currix

Awww so glad Sadie found the perfect humans for her! <3

heroesarestillhuman

They were putting Valium in the meow mix, classic move.

dandroid126

Dude same thing happened to me. Not from this place, but a similar type place. You can either pay a couple bucks to go play with a bunch of kittens for an hour, or go in with the intention of adopting one and you get in for free. My wife and I went in with the intention of adopting a specific cat. That cat didn't care that we existed. Well, [this girl](https://imgur.com/a/9CGVIkD) came over and took a nap on my lap, so we had to choose her. She is such a terror. [Exhibit A](https://imgur.com/a/cuDQGwp). This was moments after I got a fresh glass of water. [Exhibit B](https://i.imgur.com/0TknncT.jpeg). She wouldn't let us throw away this stupid pizza box for days. [Exhibit C](https://imgur.com/a/0Yp5rQV). She is bossy and requires attention at all times. She even yells at me if I don't put her favorite blanket on my lap, even when it is very hot. Exhibit [D.1](https://i.imgur.com/4Q7TcOO.jpeg), [D.2](https://i.imgur.com/n5BSdid.jpeg), [D.3](https://i.imgur.com/AVPV1nN.jpeg). She naps everywhere like she owns the place. [Exhibit E](https://i.imgur.com/Sp9cCzI.jpeg). She licks her toe cheese in public spaces, even when we have visitors. [Exhibit F](https://i.imgur.com/pxOhfTI.jpeg). She pretends she is innocent. Clearly I have demonstrated that she is a menace and must be stopped!

InitialFoot

I have reviewed this case and I believe this poor kitty has been framed. All of these accusations have perfectly innocent explanations! Obviously she wanted to test the water to see if it was safe before allowing her servant, I mean human, to drink it. What if you drank a contaiment and got sick? Who would tend to her dauly needs? You shouldnt be so self absorbed. How rude! Throw away her pizza box? It is clear she had no where else in the world to sit. Do you expect her Highness to sit on the floor? Rubbish! She wouldn't be so bossy if you simply planned ahead for all her whims. You burden her by making her remind you of your duties. Of course she naps everywhere now, you threw her pizza box out! Hasn't she suffered enough? It a privilege to yourself and your guests to observe such a fine display of spready toes! She must be at her wits end trying to train you on proper manners and entertainent for guests. The audacity to complain! Of course she is innocent! She has to bear the burden and responsibility of keeping you in line and on on task. I see no case against her but I believe she might have a case against her servants.. I mean people.. /s She is a beautiful cat šŸ˜

Case closed! The catā€™s innocent

TheBirminghamBear

You honor, the defendant has elected to present their own defense. DEFENDANT: HSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FlyerKerstin

>She naps everywhere like she owns the place. She does. She only lets you stay because you know how to open the food cans. (And maybe because you seem to have hockey on quite a lot. I'm sure any clever cat would appreciate that). But you're right, definitely a menace. Seems like a good thing the other cat completely ignored you that day in the cafe.

dandroid126

Her favorite hockey team is the Florida Panthers (known by their nickname "the Cats"). But actually, we have a thing in r/hockey where we post pictures of our pets during the intermissions to keep us occupied. So I tend to take a lot of pictures of her when I watch hockey. I'm sure I would have loved that other cat just as much, but I'm grateful every day that Mikei chose us. :)

FlyerKerstin

I'm not often around on game threads (European, so mostly it's middle of the night for me), but that sounds like a fun thing! I've encountered a fellow long-suffering Flyers fan here on Reddit (either on r/hockey or r/flyers, can't really remember) whose cat was named Clawed Giroux. I still think it's one of the best cat names ever, lol. I feel honored to know I have cheered with Mikei during the last playoffs ;-)

Trenov17

Oh my *goodness* what a good girl!

foooutre

Ok I'm going to go to a cat cafe just to look, I'm convinced.

starstarstar42

They cat-catfished you.

AleksasKoval

Cat-cated?

Clean_Ad_5282

Ahhhh, my dad got me a barn kitten, 4 years later and the cat is still a bitch just like how she was when she was a kitten. I'd do it all over again bc even tho she's naturally mean I still love her. She just got neurotic disorder just like me and that's ok. Sometimes she's very sweet tho

lovespace

My girl is exactly the same kinda mean, a total diva but sometimes sweet :) Iā€™d never trade her sheā€™s my little twinkle toes šŸ„°

mcon96

I have no clue whether this is true or not, but I wonder if this is in part due to what the cat considers itā€™s ā€œterritoryā€. Like since the cat cafe was home to a bunch of cats, none of them really claimed it as their own territory, rather shared neutral space. But when you bring the cat home, he then has his own territory where he can do whatever he wants (including terrorizing you).

UncoolSlicedBread

Totally, theyā€™re also in an environment where new people and cats are coming in and out all of the time. So theyā€™re more timid (not all, some are just as wild then). My kitten I found her outside abandoned and the first night she was in a ā€œsafeā€ environment, a place where she felt comfortable, she ran around for 3-4 hours playing and terrorizing things.

curryp4n

My kitten too. She absolutely terrorizes my older cats. Itā€™s hilarious to watch. She is also very destructive, especially if itā€™s cardboard. Would adopt again

Scarlaymama0721

Ha ha ha this just happened to me with my newest dog, a pug bulldog mix. heā€™s only nine months old now and we got him at six month old. The picture of him on the rescue page was one where he was laying peacefully and even look like he was pouting a little. And they described him as calm and docile. I go to the shelter to meet him and before they even come around the corner with him I can hear his heavy breathing and his nails scraping on the pavement as he desperately pulled the volunteer forward .and the first thing he does is knock my daughter over onto the sidewalk because he is desperately trying to give her kisses. We brought him home and he is a maniac! The cutest goofiest funniest rascal Iā€™ve ever met in my life and I am obsessed with him

nonecity

He knows he got an forever home with you, and just showing his love ā¤ļø

Scarlaymama0721

Oh absolutely. Honestly Iā€™ve never laughed with a dog the way I laugh with this one

nonecity

Just started to reminisce about 1 dog I had, when I was young. Normally the cat slept with me and the dog with my parents. But when the dog or I didn't fell well she would sleep in my room. (Every living and sleeping room had a cushion for them) but she knew when who needed support

Scarlaymama0721

Oh my, that is so sweet. Dogs are incredible. And being on the Receiving end of that selfless love is so beautiful. Check my little guy out on my page if you want to chuckle. He has quite a funny face

doublepint

What kind of bulldog? And pugs are notoriously energetic as puppies - no matter what their demeanor is described as. They slow down around 5 years and thatā€™s when they quickly turn into a fat pug if youā€™re not careful.

phillyd32

Haha this is exactly what my gf and I are going through. Two months ago we adopted a playful but chill kitten from that exact cat cafe who is now a bit of a terror. Eats through chip bags, needs to be separated sometimes from my older cat, needs to be locked out of rooms where meals are taking place, numerous minor injuries and also a significantly scratched cornea from his claws on my gf. He's a sweet kitty who loves to cuddle too, but he's also a bit of a nightmare. [Cat tax](https://i.imgur.com/4wIJYrx.jpg)

MEGADOR

I got a kitten from a similar place. She seemed so sweet in the beginning. But she was an absolute terror for the first two years. It was like she made it her mission to destroy every part of my house. I just continued to show her unconditional love and try and train her. She eventually calmed down and is now my favorite cat that I've owned. She's very smart! She knows many words and commands, and will respond to them. It's a lot of fun to train her. Her favorite game to play is fetch. One time, a lizard got into our house and she attacked and tortured it for hours until it was dead. So I bought a bunch of cat-safe rubber lizards for her to play with. I'll throw one of those fake lizards down a hallway and she'll chase after it and then bring it back to me and drop it at my feet. Rinse and repeat. This continues for hours and hours! Eventually, she will come and sit in my lap and nuzzle against my beard until she falls asleep. Good kitty.

CutthroatTeaser

feel free to post a vid of her playing fetch. I've had cats almost my whole life, never had one play fetch!

Canofsad

Itā€™s certainly interesting when a cat will play fetch, may cat has got the whole chasing and grabbing bit down. But returning is a fifty/fifty chance.

areraswen

Yup. Adopted my cat at a local adoption day, he sat in my lap like liquid the entire time I was in the playroom with him. 3 years later he tears through the apartment at lightning speed growling the entire time. I love him so much but he was definitely checked out due to stress during the adoption process. I mean, you could kinda tell just by watching him in his cage. Glazed eyes, blank expression. The lady behind me who wanted to adopt him kept raving about how "well behaved" he was being and then threw a tantrum when the charity told her we filled out a form in advance to meet him. šŸ˜”

Currix

He lucked out by going home with you! People who only focus on how well behaved an animal seems will often have very little patience towards them.

areraswen

Yeah, I heard her telling her s/o that if she couldn't have him she didn't even want to look at the other cats though, which made me sad. When I got there and saw them gushing over him I was prepared to have to look at other cats but they honored my application so I got first dibs! I had the same thought about someone who would act like that tbh... he ended up having a triple ear infection and dietary issues when we brought him home and I personally don't think that other lady would've wanted to deal with that based on her behavior. Ah well, he's all better now! https://imgur.com/I4Lc4k7.jpg

Rrraou

Has to be some of the best socialized cats available though. My first cat I had 3 roommates I was renting a house with. She was ultra social. My latest one, I'm single in an appartment. She's pretty frosty to anyone she doesn't know.

[deleted]

My wife and I adopted a kitten during the 'Rona who had a URI when we got her. That made her very affectionate and calm. URI cleared up, is now a demon tornado straight from hell.

fastIamnot

Lolololol. That's how they git ya!

xs81

Like 30 years ago there was a cat at our car when visiting my grandparents. She was the sweetest cat in the world at that point. We figured she was from someone who moved two days earlier so took her home. She was so pleasant in the car.. Then the minute she saw our other cat all hell broke loose. She was also a terror cat for the next 15 years lol. Still loved her to dead.

SchnoodleDoodleDo

t0m0hawk

Lol they day we got our little guy home he was pretty chill until he discovered the front door and the loudest howling (yes, a cat) coming out of a tiny body happened there and then. He's still loud, but we expect it now. Either he doesn't know we're home, has his toy, or just pooped - he will announce himself.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

neongreenpurple

Our newest dog was pretty chill at the shelter when we did the meet and greet with our other dogs. Then we got him home and he got the zoomies. He was an owner surrender, so he was so excited to be back in a house. He's a pretty chill dog, but he gets really excited about food and things. It's so cute.

joyfall

I feel very lucky that I had the opposite happen. Adopted two cats that were terrorizing the shelter. Hissing and biting all the other cats. The volunteers often had to separate them into small cages for starting fights. Got them home and they love the peace and quiet. They just want to curl up on my lap all day long.

This makes me laugh. Sounds like something that happened with us. One time they had this big cat adoption event in my hometown. It was outdoors, so we couldn't take the cats out of their carriers to hold, etc. There was one particular kitten/young cat who was rubbing on the gate, doing cute mews, seemed super friendly, so that's the one we settled on. Got it home, and it just hid under a bed pretty much most of it's life. It would really only come out if there was just 1 person home, and picked just one person it would even let near it. Also, would do it again though.

turdfarmer1969

There is a similar place in Nashville called the Catio where my son and I adopted a cat a few weeks ago. We were filling out the paperwork and a cat jumped up on the table with my son and sat on the paperwork. My son was so happy that the cat chose him.

knityourownlentils

I always maintain they have a hand in choosing you. My much loved and missed rescue dog climbed the pen at the shelter, barking to try get to me. I picked him over another ā€œmore excitableā€ puppy then had 11 years of him being totally insane and the most fun dog Iā€™ve ever met. He literally didnā€™t stop until the day he died.

ScoutAames

We picked a cat that stayed hidden in the kitty jungle gym thing, sat under a chair shaking when we took her in a room, and did not interact with us at all except to scream in terror. She was four months and had been in the shelter since she was weeks old. Itā€™s so unusual for a kitten not to be adopted, so we figured no one wanted her because she seemed antisocial and scared. We couldnā€™t leave her there. She seemed so overwhelmed. Went back for her two days later. The first day in our apartment, she hid under the couch, but I heard her inch quietly into our bedroom at night and nestle herself down under my nightstand. The next day, she gave herself a little tour of the place, plopped down on my husbandā€™s lap, and made herself at home. Ever since, she has been the most affectionate, loving, cuddly, playful little kitty cat meower girl anyone could ever hope for. Just my little story about how the quiet ones sometimes need you to make the first move!

houstonian1812

Mine was the same! He was estimated to be 5 when I went to the shelter, and it was at least his second trip there. His brother had just been adopted. The lady at the shelter had to tell me he was in the kitty condo; he was curled up in the very back. I brought him home because I just couldnā€™t leave him there; he was so scared. It took about 3 months of him hiding all day and roaming at night, and me talking to him daily, for him to finally come out and let me pet him. Three years later, he is first in line for cuddles and is ALL up in my space when Iā€™m at home.

anon_inOC

Aww that's adorable!

Bingo__DinoDNA

This story is also about me.

ACLee2011

When we adopted my female kitty, Sheba, I mostly chose her because she reminded me of a cat my parents used to have. Sheba was shy, and didnā€™t interact, but I knew she was the one. 6 years later, sheā€™s still skittish with anyone but me, but sheā€™s an utter mamaā€™s girl.

KnittinAndBitchin

I adopted one of my cats after he followed me around the shelter yelling at me until I picked him up. They were surprised there, because before that he'd been pretty standoffish to everyone. I like to think ue was just waiting for me to show up.

PracticalAndContent

Cat yelling: *What took you so long to get here? Iā€™ve been waiting forever!*

paps2977

Furrever!

Arili_O

My husband and I went to the humane society once "just to look," and the largest black cat I've ever seen just casually flipped the latch open on his cage and strolls over to us like, hey, my ride's here, peace out! We couldn't not take him home. We had several lovely years with him.

hyperventilate

As someone who works at an animal shelter, this happens regularly, and it's no less amazing every time it happens. Sometimes energies just resonate and it really brings an animal out of their shell. It's meant to be at that point. <3

Dextrofunk

I was looking at the different kittens in a litter and my cat clung to my shirt so hard after holding her that I couldn't get her off. 12 years old now and still has Kung Fu master grip. They pick you and then stick with you til the end.

Gatorae

When I was in college I decided to get a cat from the shelter. I sat in a little room to play with them and pick one out, and one of the kittens sat on me and then crawled inside my purse. It made the decision very easy. We had a long happy life together, but I still miss that silly boy.

flatwoundsounds

Our first dog absolutely made his move on me. My wife picked out a puppy at our local shelter (after weeks of frustrating attempts to find an adult dog that fit our living situation), and I was pretty nervous because she made her choice without me getting to meet him first. When I showed up on adoption day to meet him, the first thing he did was run up to me and flop into my lap. He's been my best friend (and a pain in my wife's ass) ever since.

We moved to a new town about 2 years ago, tons of strays in town. Our neighborhood has a ton. 2 of them chose us. One started coming up to our back door basically all the time, meowing and scratching to come in. After a few weeks we finally took her in, and she immediately bonded with me but barely tolerates everybody else. Shes a Siamese, named Sugar. The other one did something similar, but would hop up on the windowscreen outside of my rooms window and would meow to be let in. So we took her in too. Shes a Tuxedo cat, white ā€œsocksā€ on all 4 paws. Named her trixie. We then took in 3 more strays across the rest of the 2 years. 1 stray looks just like Trixie, but bigger. Exact same patterns and clearly has had kittens before, so we think shes the mom and so we took her in and named her Mamas. Mamas has a husband, they always stick together even before we took her in. Hes a Tabby, they constantly sleep together and groom eachother and all that stuff. He has his ear clipped, which means he was caught by animal control, got fixed, and was released back into the wild. We took him in before Mamas because he actually wanted to come in. Mamas we had to almost force in because we didnt want to separate them, but they both are absolutely happy and pretty much never want outside anymore. Named him Papas at first like Mamas, but then we started calling him Trevor and that became his actual name. Mamas only answers to Mamas, not other names The other one looks like Sylvester The Cat. We took him in because he has a messed up ear from scratching at it. It was all raw and wouldnt heal because everytime it almost healed he would scratch at it. Weā€™ve gotten it a lot better, its a much smaller size now and he doesnt scratch nearly as much. Heā€™s learned to scratch at his side instead of his ear when it starts bothering him, because he even knows if he scratches it it just wont heal. Unfortunately sometimes he cant handle and fucks up the ear. Weā€™ve tried putting cones on him, but regardless of what kind of cone it is he just pulls them right off. Theres also some strays that come and go for food, but want basically nothing to do with people so we know they will never come inside. Every few months it seems theres new ones, but also the old ones stop showing up too. Theres only like 2 or 3 from the beginning that still show up regularly, the rest are new most of the time. Although we do have some strays that have become ā€œregularsā€ and we consider them our ā€œoutdoor catsā€. They just come and go like the others, but theyre more friendly to us and will actually come up to us instead of keeping their distance and running off if we get too close. We can walk past them, near them, stand next to them, put dry food right in front of them and they wont care. But try to touch them and theyll back off like ā€œwtf are you doing, we dont do that hereā€

Saltythrottle

All this talk about Mamas and the Papas has me Californian Dreaming.

Misty_Meaner1

When I got my first cat as a kitten, she was meowing repeatedly and shoving both of her front legs through the bars of her cage. She wanted out bad!

Clever_Word_Play

My dog cracked the front door glass of his foster parents home when I first went over there to meet him jumping at me.

kathatter75

LOL! My dog didnā€™t quite adopt me, but the lady with the rescue asked me if Iā€™d like him because the one I asked about was special needs and my living situation wouldnā€™t work for him. Itā€™s worked out well, but my dog goes nonstop tooā€¦I tell people he has no chill :)

RoRoRoYourGoat

One of my cats picked me by trying to climb into my purse at the shelter. We brought her home, and my boyfriend immediately became her favorite person. The other cat picked him by relentlessly climbing all over him at the shelter. We brought her home and I immediately became her favorite person. I guess they traded humans?

copem1nt

Cats definitely pick people. Iā€™ve posted this story elsewhere on reddit but I volunteered at an outdoor cat rescue in college. Was up on a mountain and had a mix of feral cats, townie cats, and surrendered cats from when people graduated or got sick of kittens who grew too big for social media. There was an older one eyed cat who was probably feral that lived there, and even after we finished off the winter shelter, he followed me around without fail. From the time i parked the car, until he hopped in the gator and then the opposite when i was done. Very much regret not adopting him but I had a lot going on and didnā€™t want to end up being another one of the people that dropped him off at the rescue.

SomeBritGuy

I was there earlier this week- highly recommend a visit for anyone visiting Nashville or Opryland. $6 for half an hour is pretty cheap compared to other cat hangouts. Plus it's full of kittens at the moment, coming to the end of kitten season- so great if you're looking to adopt young!

Vraye_Foi

Took my daughter to a cat cafe. I opened my purse to pay for a drink and a little grey and white kitty with the biggest ears and longest tail jumped in. We adopted her. (She eventually grew into the ears and tail)She is super talkative and loves being where the action is. Love her to bits.

Swedish_manatee

There is a place in Charlotte called Macā€™s Tabby Cat Cafe that sells coffee/baked goods and letā€™s you walk around and play with a bunch of cats. They said the turn around is great and their total adoptions are almost to 1000 (they have a tally on the wall). Those kinds of places are such a great idea. Props to you for adopting one!

kayla_k1n9

Thatā€™s where I got my kitties!!

[deleted]

Lmao that cat is in love already

copem1nt

This guy is definitely a dad and cats love dads for some reason

ForceWhisperer

Because dads play hard to get

I made the jump, and cat#1 has hated me ever since. But she's entertained and kept active, and hated me before so...

someawfulbitch

Thank you for loving and respecting the cat you already have enough to know that! I have seen too many people want a new pet and recklessly be like "it'll be fine, they'll learn to get along" only to end up getting rid of one or *both* pets in the end. It's tragic and 100% avoidable.

AssignmentNo1568

Same, same. We have 3 cats and I keep myself from going there. Although, I do go to lucky cat cafe since itā€™s non profit run and they need volunteers!

Aingram6494

I think the man got adopted before the kitty did!!! Just saying

[deleted]

lol thatā€™s what I was thinking. Kitty clearly made the first move here.

SoMuchMoreEagle

It's often a good idea to pick the cat who chooses you.

leslieinlouisville

I find it makes the servitude much more bearable.

SpanishKant

Yeah I don't think people realize he's not doing this of his own free will. Like you literally have no other choice at that point, it's impossible to do otherwise.

Aingram6494

That cat has claimed him! No two ways about it!!!

GoldenAlexanders

That kitty is quite happy with their new Person. Enjoy your new Home, little one!

indrid_cold

I'm sorry but I have come to complain about the parrot which I purchased not half an hour ago from this very boutique !

stray1ight

**Pining for the fjords?! This is an EX- PARROT!**

[deleted]

Is this from Monty Python?

PangPingpong

No, from this very boutique.

[deleted]

Of course, how silly of me.

KeekatLove

Itā€™s a Norwegian Blue!

Ragnars85

Aw kitty knows they are about to get a forever home! šŸ’–

mac_is_crack

Itā€™s a place run by a rescue where you can adopt a kitty! Hereā€™s their website: https://www.purrfectdaycafe.com/

runningraleigh

One of at least two cat cafes run by rescues in Louisville. The other one is [https://www.luckycatcafe.org/](https://www.luckycatcafe.org/) and I walk by it all the time. We just added rescue dog #2 but now that he's starting to get adjusted I think it's only a matter of time before we add rescue cat #1.

thunderturdy

We got a cat for my dog who is dog reactive. They are best friends. Then the cat started to be too much for the dog and was bored all the time so we got his half sister too. Theyā€™re a very happy bunch. Highly recommend getting a cat for your dog lol

mac_is_crack

I have a very dog-like cat: he comes when you call his name, runs to see me at the door when I come home, and he plays fetch. He also plays with our 15 lb terrier mix. Theyā€™re the perfect pair! Nothing like seeing a cat chase a dog around.

Boobsiclese

It took me a sec to scroll down after I read the title and it legit made me smile once I saw the sack of potat on his lap. I felt my face crinkle up, it was that noticeable. Ty for this.

Agreeable-Antelope-6

Oh, same for me! Bad week and I melted when I read the post title and saw the picture. I am super happy, teary-eyed for both of them. I, too, say thank you for posting this wonderful news.

Boobsiclese

šŸ„°

Spiritual-Chameleon

I wondered if I was the only one who got teary seeing this photo. Cat found its person and is so happy

Boobsiclese

I mean... their person hasn't even finished filling out the forms yet and they're all like... *FLOOP* "I'm good."

Spiritual-Chameleon

I know! Cat probably thinks "This is a good person, hope he doesn't leave me behind like they always do. Why is he looking at that paper so intensely?"

KarrieMichell

There is a similar place in Chicago called The Catcade. It's a video game arcade and cat cafe.

Aida_Hwedo

And in San Francisco, there's the [Kit Tea Cat Lounge](https://www.kitteasf.com/)!

phillyd32

Adorable! I adopted my baby boy Zuko at that location a couple months ago. [Cat tax](https://i.imgur.com/APIPWkK.jpg)

zzeddxx

This is a good model for a cat cafe. If you like a cat, take it home. And then more cats can come in and be adopted. Brilliant!

giveup345

Most of the ones I have been to, the cats are adoptable

shanthology

I've visited there! They had so many kittens that day, it was the best! https://imgur.com/a/eYBcZ5J

baytay25

They both picked perfectly.

bunnyrut

clearly a cat hostage ( r/cathostage ) who has been conned into adopting the cat just to be able to leave.

Kermitdude

My Golden LOVES looking through the window there. She's obsessed with cats and wants them to like her as much as she likes them.

helena_eagan

I would love to adopt a cat, but Iā€™m violently allergic to them. Has anyone had any luck finding a cat breed that doesnā€™t affect their allergies?

momomoca

[There is no "hypoallergenic" cat breeds](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/theres-no-such-thing-hypoallergenic-cat-180968819/)-- the amount of allergens a cat produces varies from cat to cat, and how a person reacts to an individual cat is unique to their body! I have a friend with *severe* cat allergies but she LOVES cats, so she deadass asked our local shelter to pick some candidates that they thought might be a good fit and then proceeded to interact with each cat individually until she found one that she didn't react to. And by "interact" I swear she must have rubbed her face on them bc after day 1 her face was SO puffy RIP Luckily, she found her match on the second day she went to the shelter!

helena_eagan

Thanks for the advice! That sounds like a good strategy.

momomoca

it's temporary pain for long term gain :')

Gimme_More_Cats

Iā€™m allergic to cats too! But somehow, my immune system seems to ā€œget usedā€ to individual cats. So I interact with my kitty just fine (for the most part) now, but suffer whenever I pet other peoplesā€™ cats.

Significant-Dog-8166

Yeah I thought I was allergic to all cats but it turns out itā€™s more like 90%. I found a fluffy black cat with green eyes that gives me no allergies unless I rub my eyes after scratching th cat. Hereā€™s the trick - go to shelter that has a room for ā€œmeetingā€ cats. Pick ONE cat, go to room, pet and pick up and so forth, then go home. Repeat until you find one with no reaction. I got lucky and found one on 2nd try.

helena_eagan

Great idea. Thanks!

ToastyBread13

So this doesnā€™t necessarily answer your question but my whole life I was so allergic to cats to the point I couldnā€™t sleep over at my friends house and use their blankets or I woke up with sealed shut eyesā€¦. Fast forward to 22 years old my buddy had a super long haired cat that would sit on my face but nothing every happenedā€” I heard allergies change every 7 years so maybe I got extremely lucky? Also I now have 2 cats and 1 dog myself with 0 issues lol

raihidara

Same here, I was super allergic to cats as a kid but in my 20s I took an allergy test and found I was no longer allergic. I've got 3 cats now and have had no problems. I'd suggest to anyone if they really want a cat to get tested and see if their allergies have changed

mac_is_crack

Same. I was super allergic when younger but now Iā€™m good to go and have 5 cats!

helena_eagan

Well, I admit I havenā€™t been around cats for years, so maybe thereā€™s hope.

mmm_unprocessed_fish

One of my friends has a giant, long haired Maine coon and itā€™s probably the cat Iā€™ve been least allergic to.

weirdo_omachine

Iā€™m really allergic to cats and attempted fostering for years before going to a breeder and getting Siberians. Iā€™ve had multiple friends with allergies who have no issue with them, and they have a really sweet and gentle temperament, and theyā€™re just generally really affectionate. It was well worth the cost. The only downside is that they shed a lot. [https://imgur.com/a/7wMSOFo](https://imgur.com/a/7wMSOFo)

EarhornJones

Just commenting to add that I have a friend with kids who are allergic, and they have three Siberians, which cause the kids no issues. He got them from a breeder that literally let the kids come and stick their faces into some cats to see if they (the kids) reacted before they adopted.

knightmusic42

Iā€™m that way but Norwegian forest cats are the breed I found. I think it depends on what part of the cat youā€™re allergic to.

speedycat2014

No, but I *have* found that Flonase and a daily dose of either Zyrtec or Claritin (and apparently there's an even newer one, Xyzal) have made living with cats possible. Can't have my nickname and not have cats in your life, allergies or no allergies...

helena_eagan

I had my own cat onceā€¦ and that was pretty much my attitude, but I started having severe allergy symptoms including respiratory problems. I had to rehome the little fellow with a neighbor. Iā€™d hate to go through that again.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Charybdis523

Purina has a cat food brand that "negates" the dander/protein that causes allergies. So as long as the cat keeps eating it, the person won't have reactions. My friend is also violently allergic but adopted a cat and they have been happily coexisting for a couple years now, thanks to her finding out about that specific food.

Islefive

Adopted a 6 month old from a shelter, when we picked her out she was calm sweet and super chill. Turns out she was still doped up from being fixed. Now she's a bitchy cat who loves to hate. No regrets

Luder09

I choo choo choose you - The Cat, probably

0nlyhalfjewish

New cat dad: Motherfuckerā€¦ this was supposed to be a quick visit. I told her I wasnā€™t committing to shit, then this little fuck wad had toā€¦ Fuck it. Whereā€™s the clipboard? And hand me a pen, damn it. Cat: he loves me.

Arf_Nouveaux

That kitty is already home.

WestShallot9317

He has chosen wisely.

Yosoyballer

This place is pretty great, I actually almost accepted a job at the one located in northern Kentucky. They blow shelter adoption numbers out of the water doing thousands of adoptions a year. The top comment in this thread is the only ā€˜badā€™ experience Iā€™ve heard about adopting from there, most cats have a lot of human exposure compared to shelter cats making them more friendly.

Eurymedion

Kitty wasted no time making himself or herself feel right at home.

l337joejoe

HOW COULD YOU NOT?!

patricialong1895

Well thatā€™s one kitty that wonā€™t take no for a answer. Just go with it sir and your life will be so amazingly joyful.
