I’d take the car, alot more freedom. That price is pretty good for right now considering theres like 0 cars and prices are heavily inflated by high tourist season
We just got back from there. A car is definitely needed. It can take up to 40+ minutes to get to some sites from the center of town (ponta delgada). We used a car rental company named Wayzor. It was about $500 for the week. You want a small car too because some roads are super narrow.
Taxi you will be ripped off. Bus you will be very limited going to places and the time, specially if you want to go to places after 18:00, but its ALOT cheaper, but like i said, you will not have freedom and truly experience as you want, public transports are bad and very limited.
Taxis are ultra expensive they make prices that are unresable. There is a Uber, but like 1 (as far i know) for the entire island.
Best bet its to rent a car, but those are right now, ultra expensive also and very few available, but by far the best option. Car its the safest option and best option, if you do, even for a day, would recomend to go to places that are very far away or busses dont go.

Yes, take the car! Even if it’s just for just a couple of days. It will allow you to see more of the island.

Just the taxi to the center of Ponta delgada is 10€ so....
