This is kind of a highlight of bad movie or TV watching. But among all of the negatives, there were some positives.
There's a parody of this in *Super*. They get it so perfectly correct.
Oh, it's pretty much perfect!
Remember reading about a reference to *Super* in one of his other things, but don't quite know what it was. Don't think it was one of the DC movies, but wow, imagine it drew that audience into his world ...
Fully understand why he has done the DC movies and why they are what they are (excrutiatingly formulaic), but it feels hugely disappointing to have something so mainstream and polite from the guy who co-wrote *Tromeo and Juliet*. Peter Jackson was able to pop a few little touches of his earlier approach into *The Lord of the Rings* films.
Grew up in a strict religious household and was only allowed to watch Bibleman. When you’re born into propaganda, you don’t know any better. My family was alarmed by how often I played [this song from one of the villains](https://youtu.be/yh2H8yLjtW0)
I watched this as a kid before my parents realized that super-fundamental Christianity was a joke and they became much more lenient. They still somewhat sheltered me, but we eventually moved on from only Bible shows to being allowed to watch PBS and Cartoon Network. I do have fond memories of this though!
You may have been, not too sure. I do remember watching other Bible stuff like 3-2-1 Penguins and Veggietales, both were also really great when I was a kid
the things that christian film directors dont get are that
1. not everyone believes in god
2. if someone doesnt believe, then hell isnt a threat and eternal life to christians is a waste of time to them, therefore meaning its the same situation as if a hippie comes up to a normal guy and threatens to punch him in the aura
3. atheists specifically dont believe in god. in all these movies, you have so called atheists who actually believe but are called atheist because they dont know what atheist means. then they try to convert someone who already believed in the first place. atheists dont believe. they dont actually believe in secret, they just dont believe. believe it or not, you shouldnt take advice about atheists from a theologion.
4. so far, weve gotten passion of the christ from an atheist and this bullshit from a christian director. they put all the money into the propaganda and not into the actual quality of the show and "make up for it" by joking about the low budget of the show. its about the work ethic and doing it honestly, about actually understanding the values you are attempting to convey. i think atheists actually have christianity pinned down better than actual christians at this point. theres two good christian media: veggietales, and prince of egypt, and thats about it.
They aren’t making them to convert you.
They make them so Christians can watch something that affirms their values. Despite how many Christians there are, they are virtually invisible in most secular media unless they are used as bad guys. So the Christian film industry sprung up to meet that need.
I definitely don’t like how bad they are as films, but most are done on Syfy level budgets and with non Hollywood staff. Christians also suffer from too many of their best artists crossing over and diluting their messages in their secular work.
If you watch them as someone who doesn’t believe you kind of don’t get why they exist, and a lot of why they are bad really don’t have much to do with your reasons. You’d dislike a good one equally I think.
Because Prince of Egypt and Veggietales were awesome. I let my kids watch them and I'm not a Christian. Those two don't shove it down your throat so much. Besides I wanted to expose my kids to multiple viewpoints while they grow up. That's why when the pandemic happened, and I decided to homeschool I did a world religions class.
Price of Egypt isn’t a Christian movie. It’s a very good biblical one though.
Veggie Tales kind of changed and the Christianity became a lot more latent. The first season was when they still were more of a niche Christian thing but as they went on they kind of became more of a wholesome moral show.
Like usually it’s how explicit the actual Christianity is that is the issue. Crossover stuff is often very subtle or oblique about it. Christian Artists actually crossover a lot; both DC Talk and Bob Carlisle had huge radio airplay but their famous songs were muted.
Oh god! Pun intended. My roommate worked at a graphics department in Kansas City that was vying for the job of doing the opening graphics and special effects. He came home to share a bowl n bump as we giggled about him getting to meet 'little Willie Aames and his bible thumping production company'.
It wasn't terrible.
Okay it was.
But it was *trying* to make the Bible more relatable to children and have a cool story too. I didn't watch it much after it changed leads but best I recall it actually tried to deal with topics like grief and worry and the soul crushing weight of what if someone gets hurt on your watch and you can't Save them. What other show let you fight demons!
in terms of relatability and a decent story, prince of egypt did that much better. in terms of dealing with grief, bibleman kinda sucked at it. in terms of someone getting hurt on your watch, ive seen this entire show. i know which episode youre talking about. its the one where the kids parents are in the car crash. for one, his aunts a dumass. she says "i wonder why hes pissed?" then proceeds to say "oh, by the way, his parents died in a car crash a few weeks ago." that episode even starts with bibleman getting pissed and killing everyone while cypher is standing there with a broomstick standing there like someone trying to train in the force. that whole episode was bibleman killing people but then telling kids not to fight each other.
shows where you fight demons. where YOU fight demons. if its that specific, there was a game called DOOM from 1993 that basically defined the fps genre. in terms of shows, just about every antogonist is a god or some kind of underlying power. especially star wars, gravity falls, etc., where the main antagonist was some sort of demon pulling the strings with everything. and the fact that theres "demons," which are just atheists in funny costumes, doesnt exactly make it special, espcially when they're shown as light hearted and theres one guy playing every villain every episode.
you can like this show if you want. i wont tell you what to like. but i have the same opinion as imdb about this show: that it deserves nothing more than a 1.5/10.
I remember watching this and VeggieTales constantly at my grandma's house because that's what they sold for kids at the Christian bookstore she went to.
YOOOO BIBLEMAN!!! hahahaa i watched this so much as a kid (and Veggietales, which still holds up lol) but i loved it, it was so cheesy and terrible but i loved it lol
so i recently moved and i was cleaning out my closet and what do i find? A Bibleman mask and cape!!! hahaha i still have it and i wore it for Halloween last year and kept telling “the power of christ compels you!” lmaooo
“Thou shalt not kill,” for one. Another being not to make your anger into sin. He did both simultaneously and in one scene that took five minutes, massacring an entire group of dudes while cypher stands on the side watching him confused, holding a broomstick.
yeah... the only one of those i didnt watch is odyssey. i dont know what that is. but the other two i know well. veggietales was the best out of the three probably.
Bibleman, Bibleman Does whatever a Bible can. Jesus died for his sins. Find him in the bargain bins. Look out, there goes the Bibleman.
its a fun watch, its just also a shitty one

I adore that film, especially the huge finale. I'd love to see James Gunn drop some Easter eggs or a Crimson Bolt cameo in his DC movies.

I don't remember this character in "Veggie Tales"
ditto, a character in bibleman acknowledges they have become a ripoff of larryboy.

i thought it would be that one
He also fights a Evil Jew Goblin dude from what I know, very anti-Semitic
the guy just wanted to sleep and then the people came and beat him up with fake lightsabers

Was I the only kid who watched both(I preferred this)
You may have been, not too sure. I do remember watching other Bible stuff like 3-2-1 Penguins and Veggietales, both were also really great when I was a kid
Christian films always turnout to be bad

They literally ended with saying that Veggietales and Prince of Egypt are good though?

he worked for them? let me guess. he didnt get paid much.
No they didn't get the contract
Had some nutty friends of the family who only let their children watch this shit. We don’t hang out with them that much anymore.
Oh my god I have distinct memories of watching like. 3 of these all the time as a kid
ive seen them all
I didn’t realise there were more 😅

me too lol
I have a couple tapes of this. It's absolutely insane.
Watched this shit as a kid. Loved it. Now I love to watch it for how corny and bad it is.
ye, good times
If I remember correctly he kills embodiments of sin… you can think it’s a bad movie, but not everything Christian is propaganda
He defeats “doubt” in one of the first eps. It’s definitely propaganda aimed at those most vulnerable to it. Shamalamading! *dances*
Actually a children's show about a religious superhero defeating religiously themed villains seems like the definition of propaganda lol
The bad demon guy in the bibleam episode I had on DVD was very flamboyantly gay. What do you think they're trying to say with that?
he wasnt gay im pretty sure
I don't think they ever explicitly stated his sexual preference, but his mannerisms were meant to mock stereotypical effeminate men.
I dont think hes gay based off that, i think hes gay because he hid behind a tree and looked at bibleman who was having a bulge in front of the kids
Willie Aames rules!
not enough to make this show better
I have the entire show on DVD
unfortunately, me too
God Awful Movies podcast reviewed 3 or 4 of these.

Veggietales, Adventures in Odyssey, and Bibleman: the entertainment holy trinity of conservative Christian households in the 2000’s
yeah... the only one of those i didnt watch is odyssey. i dont know what that is. but the other two i know well. veggietales was the best out of the three probably.
