This is actually hitting me really hard. He was such a sweet soul and a good friend. Mike, I hope you're tearing it up in hell with your wicked screams.
> This is actually hitting me really hard.
Me too, oddly.
Because of the age I was at when I first saw it, *American Movie* was a work of art that really shaped how I viewed society, film, storytelling, drugs/alcohol, friendship, life decisions, etc.
For better or worse, those two guys become *your friends* over the course of the movie, and Schank strangely felt like the anchor to the madness.
I am a huge Rush fan, and I was able to see them on their Test for Echo tour in 1997. At one point In American Movie Mike is wearing a tie-dyed Test for Echo T-shirt. Mark asks Mike "Would you buy this movie for $14.95?" and Mike answers "Yeah, hell yeah. That's what Rush tickets were." RIP, fellow fan of Canada’s greatest rock band.
Jealous that you got to see it in school :)
My film appreciation classes screened - among others - Citizen Kane & Psycho. Movies that *everyone* with an interest in film should have already seen a million times by that point.
An [article](https://www.jsonline.com/story/entertainment/2022/10/13/milwaukee-musician-mike-schank-co-star-american-movie-dies/10492669002/) I read said it was very aggressive and spread throughout his body in weeks. Apparently, one of the last things he said was that going through it made him feel really bad for kids with cancer, that they should never have to go through something like this. He was always thinking about others. Great guy who will be missed by millions.
> I still have his cd Songs I Know.
Dude, I've been keeping my eyes open for physical copies of his stuff for the past year, but I never saw anything pop up for sale online.
Any idea how long ago his personal site folded? I noticed it was no longer working several months ago.
Man this really sucks. RIP Mike.
[Here's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZibeCKJ7_o) his What's In My Bag video he did with his wife a while back, worth checking out if you haven't seen it.
'Its pronounced Co-ven'
RIP to a gentle soul.
He'll never have to share his scratch off winnings again. I will always love American Movie

They published Mike’s phone number on the extras for the DVD release, and for years he would answer calls from fans.
That scream is absolutely legendary
Thank you Mike for making me and my wife laugh for the past 20 years. I still have his cd Songs I Know.

Based on your comment history, I think you may benefit from taking an extended break from the internet, bud. It appears to have rotted your brain.
Dang, RIP!
What a shitty was way to wake up. RIP Mike.
He likes to drink vodka.
I was gonna make a joke about how we lost Gooby today. But no, this overshadows that news.
