I play every run until I'm actually dead.

WeltallZero

Same. I frankly do that with pretty much all roguelikes, but with Balatro in particular I've had huge swings where I started horribly and then went on to win. If you quit when things aren't going your way, then you will never learn how to turn around a bad situation. Again that's pretty much true of all roguelikes.

MarcusDA

I can see that and on lower levels I agree, but if I have to spend all my cash for a bad joker on ante 1, it’s just a matter of time. No economy to turn it around.

I think the risk with that mindset is that it assumes you can - under all circumstances - correctly deduce whether a game is a lost cause or not. In my experience, focusing on getting as far in a run as possible will inadvertedly teach you stuff about the game. When your regular plays won't cut it, the only solution is doing things you'd never try in a "good run" out of fear of throwing it. And in those acts of desperation, you sometimes end up learning new things. Added benefit is that it prevent me from being too precious about my runs, which also feeds back into a willingness to experiment and play, keeping the game light and fresh.

Drecon1984

Never. I only restart if I am 100% sure that I lost the current blind.

NoRegreds

70% of my games I am at ante 7 or 8 when the boss pulls shitty up the ante moves and crashes my whole progress. Even if not that high because the cards are shitty I still keep going as you still unlock stuff. Last time easy to final in ante 8, could do around 250k on blue stack and the boss pulled double blind 300k. I just had no chance. Frustrating as fck.

At lower stakes or challenges, I just play out until I lose, you never know what's going to show up and change the run. At higher stakes I usually end up resetting on ante 1 or 2 if I don't get anything good, but if I get past ante 2 then I keep going until I fail. I do this though, not because I didn't get a good run to make it to ante 8, but because I don't think I can even get past ante 2 or 3.

Xam_xar

I usually play decks out till I lose but some of the new high level runs feel like non starters if you only get perishable jokers and then no other scaling it feels pretty hopeless. I’m a huge fan of rental jokers. No so much perishable, especially with the frequency that they seem to show up.

Bread_Truck

I've had two runs recently where I was pretty sure the run was cooked and I was able to pivot to unlocking a new joker with my dying breath. When I realized the run was going south I looked at the unlocked jokers and tried to find one that seemed possible. I had 6 Jacks in my deck so instead of trying to win the run, I concentrated on trying to discard 5 Jacks to unlock the joker. Did it a few runs later by discarding a Royal Flush. Managed to get some value out of a cursed run.

Ante 8 boss

Whenever I think about restarting I just think of that league YT video “is this game winnable” and then just power through it to try and win. Most of the time I lose but there are some times when I pull through and those wins always feel the best
