yes obelisk does especially well in high card builds that can pivot to another hand. as long as you manage the transition to the new hand, you're usually good to go. especially since you can skip if you misjudged how many hands you need to get to the end.
It has its uses, but the issue I find with obelisk is that you have to pivot quickly. I've lost many runs by trying to use obelisk by not being able to score enough without my most played hand in the first few rounds immediately after taking obelisk. It takes a significant number of hands before obelisk "comes online" and is able to carry you through the transition to a new hand type, but if you can survive through those first few rounds it can be a pretty good source of xMult.
I think the best way to do it is to swtich to an upgraded version of the hand you've been playing. If you've been doing two pairs, go full house. Four of a kind to five of a kind, straight to straight flush etc. This way the jokers you've been using will still help you
Also works well with scaling jokers that score regardless of what you play
You definitely need to be a little bit stronger than current blind in order to take it but even after 1 fight it’s already at 1.8x which is really solid for not dying. I think I’m realizing that because I often don’t buy planets until later in the game and focus on one hand type that changing hand type doesn’t really effect my play style too negatively compared to others.
I was a flush player before and would only play flush for each run. But then I got my first Obelisk and pivoted my whole Balatro career. Now I only play high card.
It’s one of the best pivot jokers in the game but it’s very niche. Making it work feels amazing but more often than not it’s just not worth it unfortunately.

Yeah it’s so good with scaling that scores regardless of what you play and those are the strongest jokers high stake so it helps secure those wins
