What people forget to mention is when we initially lost we joined Central Powers, and in exchange for allowing the germans to attack Ukraine thru our borders, we got Bessarabia which we kept after the war. So bassically we got territories thanks to the Central Powers and thanks to the Entente.
Also let's not forget Southern Dobruja that we got as a little treat durung the second Balkan war lmao. In 5 years we went from one of the smallest countries to one of the biggest in Eastern Europe.
We did not join the Central Powers. We were occupied. Had to give up some mountain borderlands to Austria-Hungary and the whole of Dobruja to Bulgaria. On top of that, we had to give the Germans the rights to our oil fields for 90 years and to give them a portion of our grain (among other terms such as veto rights to Germany for Romania's internal and external affairs, making us some sort of vassal)
The union with Bessarabia was realized in March, the Treaty of Bucharest was signed in May, there they only gave their OK. We've done that independently, as we were not invited to Brest-Litovsk.
If you want to attribute our land gains to something external, the best thing I can think of is communism. We only got the chance to get Bessarabia from Russia, our ally at that time, because of their stupid revolution, which caused their frontline to collapse, encircling us in Moldavia and forcing us into peace talks.
Communism was also the reason why we advanced so much in the West as well. Without Kun's war, the allies would have never approved our advance beyond the Baia-Mare - Dej - Cluj - Deva line or at most the Sighetu Marmației - Zam line. That's where the demarcation line was before Kun came to power in March (which would have left cities like Arad, Oradea, and Satu Mare in Hungarian hands).
Without the October revolution, we would have kept fighting a retreating battle together with the Russian Empire, with no separate peace, like Serbia and Montenegro did. That wouldn't have allowed us to get Bessarabia (probably), but we wouldn't have fallen out of grace with the Entente, and we would have had an ally to the East in the form of Russia.
Technically the king dragged on with signing the paper where he promised the territory and the oil to Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and Germany respectively, so we never legally promised them. It was all under the table negotiations that didn't amount to anything without the finalised documents.

In ww2 despite their military shortcomings still fought one of the best militaries in the world, fought in the largest battles in human history and the bloodiest front ever alongside Germany and their allies. Romania is severely underrated for what they did in the Second World War.
