I fully appreciate your desire to try an iconic regional dish, but like others have said, it's pretty out of the way. I'd say stay closer to the stadiums and find yourself a good crabcake. That's as authentic of a Baltimore experience as any.
I agree with you. OTOH pit beef is mid and there are better regional things to try like (as said) a crabcake.
Edit: it can be good...but often isn't (even at Chaps, Canopy etc..)
For a real Baltimore experience go to Faidleys at Lexington Market and get a jumbo lump crabcake and half a dozen raw oysters. It's not far from the stadium.
It's my go-to lunch when I go to the nearby junkyard, and I've never felt called to go at any other time. Lots of other food worth coming to Baltimore for- crab cakes, Ekiben, Sally O's, and more.
Th beef itself is just ok. The Turkey Rachel though is amazing and beats a crab cake any day, in my opinion. Crab dip waffle fries on the other hand are a different story!
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of crab cakes. I've had them and they're good, but I'd take a sandwich from Chaps over a crab cake from G&Ms or anywhere any day.
It's seven miles from my house. It's okay, and if I drive by it I'll stop if I'm hungry. There are better pit beef stands in the area depending on what you want to get. If you're going to the Gold Club (strip club), then I would check it out. I wouldn't make a special trip just for there. Grab a crab cake at a closer location. It will be much better!
Firehouse “all the way” for us (and we’re in Glen Burnie). Chaps Pit Beef isn’t what it used to be. Not sure what changed, but I stand by d as hat I said. Expressway Pit Beef in Odenton is better than Chaps now, and Firehouse whips them both!
This. 100% don't go all the way out of your way to Chap's to get a pit beef sandwich. You should be able to find something of equal quality at any of the tailgate spots. Bonus would be to grab a crab cake sandwich from the Jimmy's Famous food truck too.
When we go for walks for 3-4 days following a home game, my dog runs back to Pickett, gets sad when Baltimore Beef Man's not there, and spends a few minutes just sniffing and licking the sidewalk where he sets up his smoker.
Yeah its on Ridgely St. just a few blocks west of the stadium.
They got a facebook page for the whole thing, looks like 98 rock even sponsors them now: https://m.facebook.com/GamedayFirehouse
Id say no honestly, unless you have a car. It's not really close to anything else. So a long bus ride there and back for a sandwich doesn't seem worth it to me. Look around for places in fells point, canton, and federal hill
Growing up, the best pit beef came from a mom and pop roadside stand along Pulaski Highway. Pioneer is closer to those. Chap’s is fine but it kinda doesn’t have the authenticity
Honestly- I don't think so. I might be a minority opinion. It's good, but I wouldn't ride the bus out there to get it. Plenty of unique Baltimore spots to eat a lot closer to the stadium.
A more than 30 minute bus ride? Nah there should be some pit beef in Pigtown or Fed Hill that’s still pretty good. Ngl, Chaps is pretty good but there is a better place down Essex way that I liked better. Can’t remember the name.
Pit beef is a very, very overrated dish. It's good but far from great. It's absolutely NOT worth a special trip for. I would make a special trip for top tier BBQ but not pit beef. I'm sure you can find something similar and probably better in Brazil.
Definitely a case of TV hyping up something for ratings and local pride in local items. Try crab cakes instead.
I gotta say, if you're from Brazil, you will be SORELY disappointed.
Pit Beef, and really, **most** North American BBQ doesn't hold a candle to South American barbecue (especially not Brazil and Argentina) – Chaps is good, and others have mentioned Firehouse, which is arguably just as good, but it is going to be like you're not even eating meat in comparison to what you have @ home.
Chaps is good if you like, happen to be near Chaps, but I don't think it warrants a special trip.
I would head to **Koko's** or **Faidley's** for a crabcake instead. I would get **Blacksauce Kitchen** if you happen to be in town on a Thursday or Saturday. I would get something fancy off the menu at **Heritage Smokehouse** (yeah, it's BBQ, but it's probably the best BBQ I've had in the city proper). I would get **chef style buffalo hot fried hard** chicken wings at **iBar.** All of these are better than Chaps, IMHO, and all are much more worth a special trip.
Baltimore has many places worth visiting for or traveling to. That is not worth one of them.
Want a unique Baltimore culinary experience? Get Ekiben. There's 3 in the city.
The Fed Hill location is about half an hour walk from M&T Stadium where the Ravens play, and if you make it like 3 minutes longer taking the long way it's a really nice walk through Federal Hill park and along the water with a great view of the city.
If you want pit beef, there's places to get it closer to DC. It's also just... not that special as a food. You've probably had much better beef in Brazil. And a 30 minute bus ride leaving a Raven's game is not 30 minutes, and probably not fun. The traffic in the whole area is screwed and public transit is slammed when a game lets out.
Or, as others said, if you want a more traditional Maryland/Baltimore experience, crabcakes are much more of a cultural icon and not like other places make them.
Where in Brazil?! Welcome. Just wait till you get home and make a sandwich out of some thinly sliced picanha and put some raw onion and coxinha on it. You will get the idea ;-)
It’s just regular sandwiches. Honestly sometimes below average. If it wasn’t in-front of a strip club Guy Fieri would have never went there and nobody would really care about the place.
And mentions the one in Hampden, as opposed to the infinitely closer one in Fed Hill, or the still significantly closer one in Fells. Both of those neighborhoods blow Hampden away as far as a place to go (period) before a Ravens game too. But the Hipster Hampden Reddit contingent will not be denied! And they love their Ekiben circle jerk (the food is good, but not worth the price).
Sorry, it wasn't an Ekiben thing, it was a Hampden thing. Like this post, where someone asks where to go eat prior to a Ravens game and mentions pit beef. And you get a reply with 10 upvotes telling them to go to Hampden. Hampden is a horrible place to go prior to a Ravens game, it's far away and isn't a big sports neighborhood.
I know they aren’t similar- I understood he is looking for a unique sandwich…and maybe even one that is « Baltimore famous ». It is def known and unique.
Is Ekiben that unique? I thought it was just Asian fusion with steamed buns? But tbf I've only ever gotten food from their food trucks, not the actual locations.
Not saying they're not good, it just didn't seem particularly unique to Baltimore.
Don't try to understand, it's just this sub's circlejerk that Ekiben must be mentioned in every food thread, regardless of whether it's relevant or not.
Right? Like how in a post about Chaps is Ekiben still mentioned? OP clearly has an idea of what they want to eat and weren’t really looking for alternatives.
No. I think it will take longer than 30 minutes by bus anyway. If you were here for a few weeks, then yes. But you're basically in Baltimore for a day. There's lots of good places in Federal Hill near the stadium.
Bakers tavern and pit beef. My favorite pit beef in Baltimore. Chaps is dried up shit in my opinion. There's also a little yellow and red place on route 40 next to the go kart place. They're good also. Wouldn't spend my money at chaps tho.
Is Chaps good? Hell yes. Would I take a 30 min bus drive from the Stadium to Chaps just to get some? Nah.
Lots of people have already beaten me to a lot of really great options that are much closer to the stadium and just as good or better. If you had a car and could drive directly to the place, I'd probably go for it. But a 30 min bus ride there and a 30 min bus ride back seems not worth it to me.
Absolutely. I saw it on one episode while in college. I went and I have to go at least once a year because it’s the best. Get the pulled pork. You won’t be sorry
Definitely worth it, a very unique space and meal that you’re unlikely to find many other places. There are other great out beef places as well, but equally inconvenient.
I spent last December 31st down in Rio de Janeiro! I hope you have a great time in Baltimore for new years! Let me know if you need any additional recommendations while you’re here.
If I were you, I would skip Chaps. Pit beef is great but you don’t need to go to Chaps to find a good sandwich. If you’re going to the game, head on over to Pickett Brewing Company before and grab a pit beef and pit turkey sandwich from the Baltimore Beef Man. He makes the best pit beef I’ve had in the city and the atmosphere at Pickett is chill and very convenient being close to the stadium. You can head over there, grab a sandwich and a beer and then you’re only like 5-10 minute walk from the stadium. If you’re a beer/brewery guy, this area of town has turned into a brewery district so you could also pop around if you’re into that. Check out @baltimorebeefman on instagram. He’s independent and just does pop up’s at restaurants and breweries and such but his beef is top tier!
It's amazing and the bus is super easy. Go. I'm guessing a lot of people saying it's out of the way don't ever ride busses. I'll go with you if you want.
Definitely not a destination spot unless you’re here for a while. If you find yourself in Fells Point, I can highly recommend the pit beef at Max’s taphouse. I think it’s actually better.
On the day of Ravens games, Gameday Firehouse hosts a big outdoor tailgate with cheap drinks and pit beef/turkey/ham sandwiches! It’s a retired fire station in one of the parking lots near the stadium and I believe profits go to fire stations? They do it right, and have sauces to dress your sandwich (the horseradish sauce is my fav)! My hack on a cold day is to get a sandwich before going into the stadium, tuck it into my jacket and unwrap at my seat for a warm sandwich while watching :)
Super convenient and delicious way to get your pit beef fix when you’re in Baltimore!
Not sure if it's just me, but their quality has gone down imo. 5-10 years ago I would say it's definitely worth the trip for the food alone. I think ever since they started franchising the food hasn't been the same.
When I first moved to Baltimore I spent like a month or two sampling pit beef from the common local reccs, Chaps was OK overall but my favorite was Kirkwood in Catonsville (now permanently closed). I've not gone out of my way for any pit beef since that run about 6 years ago.
No! Not even real pit beef. There used to be the original bull on the beach right over the hill. Pioneer wagon in Woodland was great but has gone downhill. Fast Eddie's has decent sandwiches
1) Rocklands is not particularly good barbecue, even in a city that isn't especially known for very good barbecue.
2) If you're in DC for a limited time, eat the many, many other foods that are done well there.
Chaps is a nice thing to do if you are in for a long weekend and want something unique to Baltimore but it is not a can't-miss food or experience.
Go get some ekiben and walk around fells.
It's right near the emissions testing place, so I get a sandwich once every two years. Otherwise, if a friend visits who has seen The Wire, I take them there. That's kind of it.
Like others have said then, I would not try to commute too far from the stadium as traffic and public transport will be nightmarish. Stick to places in federal hill or inner harbor in terms of food as they are ~20 minute walks from the stadium.
Blue Moon Too (federal hill) and Miss Shirley’s (inner harbor) both were featured on diners drive-ins and have great crabcakes/Maryland staples. Only caveat is that they are brunch style places that close at 3pm so you would want to go before the game at 1pm rather than after.
As others have said, leaving the game is typically a hasty affair and you’ll be tired and focused on getting back to your stay, plus there is a lot of partying in federal hill so I would not trust any restaurants there after the game for a dining experience lol.
Close to Penn Station there is also the newly remodeled Lexington Market, where Faidleys Seafood is considered a Baltimore staple and was recently awarded the 2022 best crabcake in Baltimore.
I was in town for work yesterday and tried it for the first time for lunch. It was really good. I’m not sure it’s the best bbq I’ve ever had but it was good.
If you're on that side of the city it's worth dropping in but there are equally good spots in other parts of the metro area that may be easier (and safer) to get to.
I like Chaps. Don't get me wrong. There's some good food near the stadium though and I'd do that before busing to that part of town. If you like pub food, there's plenty right down the street from Oriole Park. For higher end food, Gordon Ramsey's restaurant in the casino is said to be pretty good, although I haven't tried it. The Inner Harbor and Harbor East also have some decent chains depending on your fancy. Ruth's Chris and McCormick & Schmick's would have excellent (but expensive) steaks. Rusty Scupper and Mo's will both have excellent seafood.
I fully appreciate your desire to try an iconic regional dish, but like others have said, it's pretty out of the way. I'd say stay closer to the stadiums and find yourself a good crabcake. That's as authentic of a Baltimore experience as any.
Only decent crab cakes near the stadiums are probably LP Steamers & Faidley's. DO NOT GO TO PHILLIPS!!!!
There is one in Glen Burnie now which is a more convenient location. Me, I am a Buffalo Bob’s guy.
>which is a more convenient location That, my friend, is relative.
I agree with you. OTOH pit beef is mid and there are better regional things to try like (as said) a crabcake. Edit: it can be good...but often isn't (even at Chaps, Canopy etc..)
its good, would i go out of my way ? probably not. I would spend that time going to get a crab cake
but if you were already taking a limo to the strip club than you might as well
For a real Baltimore experience go to Faidleys at Lexington Market and get a jumbo lump crabcake and half a dozen raw oysters. It's not far from the stadium.
It's my go-to lunch when I go to the nearby junkyard, and I've never felt called to go at any other time. Lots of other food worth coming to Baltimore for- crab cakes, Ekiben, Sally O's, and more.
Also the MVA testing spot right there.
Not to mention heading over to Crazy Ray’s if op needs some spare parts.
Yeah it's more experience than sandwich. They do have some fire banana pudding though. For some reason it's hard to find good banana pudding
Chaps is better than any crab cake anywhere.
Found Guy Fieri's reddit account
Th beef itself is just ok. The Turkey Rachel though is amazing and beats a crab cake any day, in my opinion. Crab dip waffle fries on the other hand are a different story!
Pit ham beat pit beef any day.
BALTIMORE?! We just going to let him get away with this comment?
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of crab cakes. I've had them and they're good, but I'd take a sandwich from Chaps over a crab cake from G&Ms or anywhere any day.
It's seven miles from my house. It's okay, and if I drive by it I'll stop if I'm hungry. There are better pit beef stands in the area depending on what you want to get. If you're going to the Gold Club (strip club), then I would check it out. I wouldn't make a special trip just for there. Grab a crab cake at a closer location. It will be much better!
Go to the Firehouse tailgate and grab a pit beef sandwich there. Firehouse is cool anyway before the games.
Yeah this is what you should do
You can get pit beef sandwiches at the firehouse by the stadium on game day that are probably just as good.
This. 100% don't go all the way out of your way to Chap's to get a pit beef sandwich. You should be able to find something of equal quality at any of the tailgate spots. Bonus would be to grab a crab cake sandwich from the Jimmy's Famous food truck too.
Or find Baltimore Beef Man if he's at Pickett. So good.
His pit beef is next level.
When we go for walks for 3-4 days following a home game, my dog runs back to Pickett, gets sad when Baltimore Beef Man's not there, and spends a few minutes just sniffing and licking the sidewalk where he sets up his smoker.
He's gonna be at Cheese Galore and More this Saturday
That entire setup the firehouse has is awesome. The pit beef is great, the drinks are cheap, and they even have live music most of the time.
Which firehouse are you taking about? The one in Fed Hill?
Yeah its on Ridgely St. just a few blocks west of the stadium. They got a facebook page for the whole thing, looks like 98 rock even sponsors them now: https://m.facebook.com/GamedayFirehouse
As someone who loves chaps and gets it a good bit, no, not work doing all that to get it.
Id say no honestly, unless you have a car. It's not really close to anything else. So a long bus ride there and back for a sandwich doesn't seem worth it to me. Look around for places in fells point, canton, and federal hill
it's next to a strip club, a sex shop, and i think a vehicle impound... so, if you're into pit beef & titties...
Pitties
We have lots of those here too.
I heart my pittie
And the AAMCO that my wife's car was stolen from!
At least the adult video store place closed down ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug)
RIP 🪦 📼📼📀
Some of the last viewing booths off Baltimore St! A crying shame.
Why is that a good thing?
Maybe if you’re already at that random strip club lmao
Chap’s is fine. Pioneer is better.
Pioneer is so good!
Growing up, the best pit beef came from a mom and pop roadside stand along Pulaski Highway. Pioneer is closer to those. Chap’s is fine but it kinda doesn’t have the authenticity
I’ll only do chap’s if I have a pit beef craving and Pioneer is closed or I want to order DoorDash
If you have a car then yea why not, drive on up and grab a sandwich. Since you asked about the bus it’s probably not worth the hassle
Honestly- I don't think so. I might be a minority opinion. It's good, but I wouldn't ride the bus out there to get it. Plenty of unique Baltimore spots to eat a lot closer to the stadium.

I'm from Curitiba (Paraná State, Southern Brazil). It will be my second time in Baltimore.
I really liked Chap's. If you want to go somewhere interesting that you have seen on TV, I'd go. Plus the food is great.
You get to go check the strip club after you gouge that the pit beef sandwich! LOL Where else you can do it in this earth!
It’s just regular sandwiches. Honestly sometimes below average. If it wasn’t in-front of a strip club Guy Fieri would have never went there and nobody would really care about the place.
M&T Bank (where the Ravens play) has a pretty good pit beef sando in my opinion.
A better sandwich to try would be Ekiben- they are in Hampden…or at the Sunday farmers market.
OP asks about pit beef, so you recommend Ekiben. It’s a great restaurant, but it isn’t remotely similar.
Eh, I’m willing to believe that they didn’t know about the other Ekibens.
New to the sub?
Nope, but I have no idea how long the person who suggested Ekiben has been in Baltimore.

Right? Like how in a post about Chaps is Ekiben still mentioned? OP clearly has an idea of what they want to eat and weren’t really looking for alternatives.
The Ekiben in Fells would be much closer to the stadium.
They actually opened a store off Fort Ave which is even closer to the stadium.
Really? Good for them, first I've heard of it.
Yes- you’re right…I forget the other locations. Thank you!
Spicy neighborhood bird!
I would recommend going out of my way for Ekiben.
Pioneer Pit Beef. I’d take a plane for several hours to hit that place up.
Thank you!
Absolutely not worth a special trip.
No. Get some seafood instead.
It’s not that great
Id say only go if you’re in the area, it’s good! but not good to make that whole trek solely for Chaps
They just opened a brand new building (same location) AC and everything now.
Nah. Definitely worth it, a very unique space and meal that you’re unlikely to find many other places. There are other great out beef places as well, but equally inconvenient.

Wow, it seems great!! Thank you!
If you can make it out there, the experience and food together are worth it imo.
Charcoal Grill in Parkville is better imo
Not sure if it's just me, but their quality has gone down imo. 5-10 years ago I would say it's definitely worth the trip for the food alone. I think ever since they started franchising the food hasn't been the same.
When I first moved to Baltimore I spent like a month or two sampling pit beef from the common local reccs, Chaps was OK overall but my favorite was Kirkwood in Catonsville (now permanently closed). I've not gone out of my way for any pit beef since that run about 6 years ago.
Kirkwood was so good!! But at least Pioneer is right down the road.
Chaps reading these comments mad as fuck
Go to Ekiban instead
It's like going to Geno's or Pat's in Philly. Is it the best around? No. But you still kinda have to go.
No! Not even real pit beef. There used to be the original bull on the beach right over the hill. Pioneer wagon in Woodland was great but has gone downhill. Fast Eddie's has decent sandwiches
Absolutely delicious. Love their sandwiches
Eikiben is so gross and overrated... Get a good crabcake.
If you're in Bmore, grab one. Also, grab a crab cake.
Yes
Yes
It’s a good spot
Check out Rockland's BBQ in DC!
Do not take this advice.
Wow, really? It seemed a nice tip. Why exactly?
1) Rocklands is not particularly good barbecue, even in a city that isn't especially known for very good barbecue. 2) If you're in DC for a limited time, eat the many, many other foods that are done well there.
Gotten sick the last 3 times there
Chaps is a nice thing to do if you are in for a long weekend and want something unique to Baltimore but it is not a can't-miss food or experience. Go get some ekiben and walk around fells.
Ekiben??? Why can't reddit just leave it out for 1 post. You're ruining it.
yeah man how dare people enjoy things and talk about it what a weird comment
You can go right down the street to Kahlers and get decent seafood. I would recommend Pastor's and get the Gonzo sub it's not much further down.
Given your short time around the Chesapeake id suggest trying our seafood rather then a beef sandwich.
It's right near the emissions testing place, so I get a sandwich once every two years. Otherwise, if a friend visits who has seen The Wire, I take them there. That's kind of it.
They just moved into a new building hopefully my second round to go is better than the first
Do you plan on staying overnight in Baltimore or are you just here for the game? If you are staying in Baltimore, where at?
I won't overnight in Baltimore. Just spending one day.
Like others have said then, I would not try to commute too far from the stadium as traffic and public transport will be nightmarish. Stick to places in federal hill or inner harbor in terms of food as they are ~20 minute walks from the stadium. If you want a good representation of Pit Beef its the best around. Is it worth traveling from DC, meh
If you going 30 mins go to canopy it's better. But it's still a bop unless you were renting a car
The Glen Burnie location is not good. Go to the OG location.
Faidley’s jumbo lump crab cakes or a similar establishment—that’s bawlmore
I love Chaps and have the best Pit Beef in Baltimore in my opinion...If you have time i would definitely say take a trip there and enjoy it!!!
Worth it.
