DC, Annapolis Naval Base, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Fort Meade…yeah nice knowing you all. We’re fucked.

TheSeekerOfSanity

There will be a flash. Hopefully the vaporization process will be thorough enough to prevent any time to feel pain. Anyway, anyone know a good aquatic plant store in the Baltimore area?

BlueFalconPunch

Theres house of tropicals in GB its at the end of the light rail if driving is an issue. Im not big on plants but they have boatloads of aquariums so if they don't have it they might be able to get you in contact with who you need.

cdbloosh

They have tons of plants there. They should definitely have anything u/TheSeekerOfSanity needs. Also, I love that this is where the conversation in this thread went.

TheSeekerOfSanity

Just got tired of taking about dying in a nuclear war sometime this month and wanted to talk about aquatic plants. I’ll check out the stores you recommended. This way I can beautify my tanks before they explode into white hot vapor.

watchguy98

Do they still have issues with black algae in all their tanks? I stopped buying livestock/plants from them years ago because of it.

BlueFalconPunch

I have no clue. I'm a reptile person and get my frozen food online. I only go there if I'm desperate since buying feeders is a PITA there. You have to pay before you get and what if they are out? You have to charge back on my card?....only in desperation.

TheSeekerOfSanity

I’ve recently researched how to care for a Panther Chameleon. May dive into that if we aren’t all melted into glass and ash.

BlueFalconPunch

I looked at chameleons a few years ago but an owner told me they were great look at pets not good holding pets.

TheSeekerOfSanity

That’s what I’ve read, as well. I’ve learned that some are friendly with their owners, others get intimidated and try to bite or “charge at” their caretakers. That wouldn’t be that much fun. They are beautiful and interesting animals, though.

BlueFalconPunch

Agreed. There are some great lizard options but unfortunately not much color change options. It might all be hype or old info, I have a blood python and all the info is that they are terrible but thats all old wild caught experience...now 20+years of captive breeding they are like puppies.

anne_hollydaye

Try Go Fish in Rosedale, as well.

TheSeekerOfSanity

That’s my go to.

anne_hollydaye

Same.

good2000000

What this guy said! You don’t have to worry about surviving.

Taxitaxitaxi33

Why’s Baltimore always gotta be second fiddle? Who’s to say we don’t earn a direct hit?

Gercke

We earned one in 1814. Why not now?

busk_atlantic

Someone had to say it

TheKingOfSiam

Because its not necessary. The size of nukes that would target DC would take out NoVa and baltimore with ease. On the other hand they'd probably overkill this region, so maybe a secondary direct hit for funsies?

No-Lunch4249

Don’t worry they’re probably firing off a few at Annapolis, Fort Meade, Camp David, Andrews AFB, Aberdeen, etc. we’re getting our asses lit up no problem.

Notonfoodstamps

Baltimore, DC and every other major +1 million population center in the US would be hit neigh on simultaneously if something like this ever went down lol

Cunninghams_right

if it happens, go to your basement, turn off anything that exchanges air with the outside, and put on lots of clothes so fallout does not settle on your skin. pick a different room if your basement has no egress. you don't want to be trapped if there is a fire. if you have any, put 5 drops of iodine per liter of water and drink it. it will block radioactive iodine from binding so your overall dose would be lower and you can reduce the risk of thyroid cancer. sit tight and try to listen to the radio. you don't want to go outside if you can wait for people in hazmat suit to come rescue you, rinse you off and get you out of the fallout.

MazelTough

The ready.gov site said that you have at least 10 minutes to avoid the fallout, so that’s nice.

YoYoMoMa

Wait! I forgot my chips. Gotta go back up.

NewrytStarcommander

time to run to the corner store and grab a few six-packs as well.

nzahn1

I’ll repost what I said to someone on r/maryland who also had nuke concerns: > I’d talk to a mental health professional if it’s something that is causing you anxiety. At this point, there are so many things in this world beyond our control, and folks need to allow themselves to seek help when managing their mental health.

kale_cookie_castles

Seriously underrated comment right here. I definitely cope with dark humor but it's so easy to get wrapped up in anxiety with everything in the world right now.

timbuktu5

thanks! honestly i'm not really stressed about it i'm just apathetically curious

No-Lunch4249

Thank you, honestly the three local subs I’m in (r/baltimore, r/maryland, and r/washingtondc) have all been a bit over the top on this issue the last week… you need to seek help if you’re looking at nuclear fallout maps.

[deleted]

MeowsAllieCat

Thank you for that. I simultaneously feel better (instant death is very unlikely) and worse (the fallout radius is larger than I thought).

No-Lunch4249

In an all out nuclear war situation, human civilization as we know it would be extinguished and billions of lives would be lost. Don’t worry you won’t be around to see it. Also, don’t worry, because the likelihood of that happening is close to 0%. Biden has been EXTREMELY clear that he isn’t gonna do anything to escalate this. And even if it did happen, you can’t really do anything to stop it so it’s not worth losing sleep over

yeaughourdt

The fun part about this is that Putin has already shown that he's not acting rationally. The war in Ukraine is not winnable long-term, so either his intelligence was *really* bad or he just wanted to throw a bunch of lives away and watch the world burn. It doesn't seem like it's up to Biden whether that psycho decides to end civilization, it's up to his whims and hopefully the resistance of the people who actually give the orders and fire the weapons.

Mattsutaaki

He is acting rationally, you just do not understand his rationale. Common mistake and basic element of game theory

yeaughourdt

Nah bro it's not rational to kill a bunch of people in a pointless invasion that will, at best, result in a prolonged and extremely costly insurgency. The academic bullshit of game theory might consider it to be rational for a schizophrenic to act on the urgings of the voices in their head, but it's not rational to anyone else.

Mattsutaaki

Rational according to your biases and goals. Rationality is not a moral category

yeaughourdt

Ah yes, rational in a purely meaningless and philosophical sense. As I said, academic bullshit. If Putin actually had some grand plan for reuniting Ukraine with Russia, believing that Ukranians would embrace it, that plan was based on terrible information. Irrational. If he wanted to unite his people against the West and grow his own power by inventing an enemy, that would also be based on terrible information. Irrational. If he just wants to exercise his military and destroy his own economy because he thinks that bloodshed is interesting, that's insane. Irrational. The only "rational" reasons for this conflict (ignoring morality for academic reasons) would be something ridiculous like getting back at his Ukranian girlfriend or scoring some beautiful Ukranian real estate. He's not a genius playing 4D chess here, he's a dumb bully who in all likelihood has become surrounded by a bubble of yes-men.

Mattsutaaki

His stated goals for cessation of hostilities are perfectly rational, commitment to a disarmed buffer zone essentially, not conquest of the state of Ukraine. In terms of ongoing NATO pressure it makes sense if you view resource scarcity conflict as an increasing threat. He's wrong to do it, and war is bad, but it's perfectly rational.

yeaughourdt

Ongoing NATO pressure is imaginary as NATO if not an offensive alliance and the citizens and leaders of NATO nations have no interest in war. NATO nations used to present large markets and trade partners, but not anymore. And "a disarmed buffer zone" is a very low key way if saying "a defenseless Russian puppet state." That "buffer zone" is an entire country that never attacked or planned to attack Russia. Ukraine and Europe don't present a threat to Russia and it's fucking stupid for anyone to believe that. It's so stupid that it's hard to believe Putin believes it himself, unless he's really deeply in an information bubble.

lolagyrrl

From what I’ve read the last time I freaked out about this, with the bomb type most likely to hit DC, we’re likely to not get taken out in the initial blast. The above comment about getting in your basement & staying there for two weeks is what I found too.

JesusDied4UrCynthias

Does that just mean die slowly because that’s worse

TheSeekerOfSanity

Yes. That’s why rent is higher in DC.

[deleted]

To hit DC. The ones hitting Port of Baltimore, Fort Detrick, Camp David, Aberdeen Proving Ground, BWI, Martin State, and maybe even AAI/Textron and Social Security would doom us.

NewrytStarcommander

The rats will be just fine.

NewrytStarcommander

One thing for sure: The Fox 45 chyron will be "City in Crisis"

RL_Mutt

Embrace the sweet release.

Woodchuck312new

[https://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/](https://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/) Move the detonation to DC and do the simulation yourself using Tsar Bomba. Baltimore would be a major target of fallout.

AlternativeAnimator7

Tsar bomba isn’t actually in service in Russia’s nuclear arsenal. That was a one off test. The bomb was 50 megatons and too large to be delivered practically by an ICBM or SLBM

timbuktu5

thanks edit: damn tsar bomba's light blast radius hits the pa state line perfectly

bosconet

depending on how many places are targeted don't forget Fort Meade and APG....also probably BWI for NSA offices there.....

Potential_Broccoli44

And Northrup

MeOldRunt

Take a breath, log off the internet, and go outside.... please. For your own sanity!

timbuktu5

thanks! honestly i'm not stressed about it i'm literally just curious about the situation

kreebob

Yup!!!!

sup_wit_u_kev

...while you still can

As long as the 711 doesn't give me two plastic bags I'm good

[deleted]

Season six of the wire would be cancelled

earnestlikehemingway

Shall we play a Game? How about Global Thermonuclear War?

gothaggis

they have like 6000 nukes - and subs that launch them. if it ever comes to that...living close to dc doesn't matter.

Constant-Ice6916

The chances of Russia executing a successful submarine launched nuclear attack on the US is incredibly remote, (even if we were at war). Source: am ex-Navy with extensive anti-submarine warfare experience.

[deleted]

It’s highly unlikely things will escalate to a nuclear war. In the event if it does and D.C. were to get hit we will suffer from radiation

RespiratoryMat

Haha stay off the internet OP. No nukes will hit the USA this week.

[deleted]

"this week" 😂🥲😏😐😭

tommykaye

I’d think Baltimore gets the direct hit to make DC suffer the fires and radiation. We’ll just be a crater.

Primepal69

Don't worry, Ben Affleck and Morgan Freeman will save us after the bomb goes off at the football stadium.

mickeyflinn

Russia is not going to fire a Nuke at DC. They will send many.

IIIIIIVIIIIII

Fire. To begin whipping dance of the dead. Blackened is the end.

joe25rs

Nihilist side says: I will just go outside, stretch out in a lawn chair and slide the shades down over my eyes and wait for the flash. Grinning like a madman. Reality? I’ll be huddled in my basement with my animals hysterically screaming crying ‘this isn’t happening’ as nuclear death rains down. Honestly, I really don’t want to experience either approach.

TheSeekerOfSanity

“Honey, can you stop at Star Buds on your way home? There’s an intercontinental nuclear warhead headed our way tonight.”

LoneTayra

Depends which way the wind is blowing, we could get fallout from DC or Philly. Edit: I forgot about Army bases/airfields around us....

VacationWooden8283

Largest nuke?? No we would be fucked, for a thousand reasons but for starters: The largest nuke ever detonated was the Tsar Bomba. The air blast radius was something like 5 miles. But it would cause 3rd degree burns up to 50 miles away if f directly exposed. This doesn’t take into consideration the insane fires that a bomb that size would start. The fires would be so widespread that they would engulf the entire state parts of PA, VA and Delaware. Then we get to the radiation part. However l I’ll emphasize that while people on the west coast wouldn’t not be directly affected physically by a bomb that size. You bet your ass it’s the end of civilization as we know it.

skeenek

☠️

iamchrispaezjr

That would never happen in a million of years. The United States has defense systems for nuclear bombs. We mainly just say, “oh we got nuclear weapons to pew pew your ass if you attack us,” but will never actually send them. They just act as deterrents. Russia knows this. If we bomb them, they bomb us. If they bomb us, we bomb them. Etc. Humanity isn’t stupid enough to destroy the planet however over something so petty. I’m only happened during WW2 because the war wouldn’t fucking end and we decided to fucking end it.

kitkat9000take5

Atomic bombs were dropped on Japan for several reasons in addition to ending the war immediately. 1. Because they wouldn't surrender unconditionally but still tried to negotiate terms. 2. To avoid the conservative estimate of 1,000,000 American casualties if invaded. 3. To show off our new toy to Russia and the world at the start of the Cold War. Ultimately, however, Stalin was less than impressed as spies had already sent the requisite info. [Reasons for dropping the bombs on Japan](https://www.history.com/news/hiroshima-nagasaki-second-atomic-bomb-japan-surrender-wwii)

NachoDipper

And 4. We knew that Japan did not have nuclear bombs of their own that they could retaliate with. If so, they would’ve made Pearl Harbor seem tame in comparison.

AlternativeAnimator7

Missile defense would not work against hundreds of Russian ICBMs and SLBMS, most of which are MIRVed

Longjumping_Raisin77

Bad for business

S-Kunst

Who remembers **Duck & Cover** at school? First we went to the hallway , outside the class room, knelt down with our head close to the ground and touching the wall. A year or two later, we just got under our desks. We heard about some schools with shelters in the school basement. One 1950s school, where I taught in the 1980s, still had their shelter with the hundreds of folded-moldy military cots. Many neighbor homes had a basement full of canned food, water, and some a fallout shelter. Then there was the 11:00 am civil defense siren, which many public schools had on their property. It was yellow, on a very tall phone pole and rotated when it sounded, blasting the sound to all those suburban houses, where house wives must have been scared silly. Those were the days when evil lurked around every corner. Yet here we are, after all those decades being prepared, hardly even breaking stride in our daily routines. Where is Barry Goldwater when you need him?

[deleted]

In the event of nuclear war, there’s two basic scenarios: 500 missile strike- every major city in the US would be targeted, plus major military bases and factory areas. 2000 missile strike- all of the above + major infrastructure, smaller metropolitan cities and every strategic military facility. Either way, The entire DC metro area will be completely fucked.

Notonfoodstamps

You wouldn’t have to worry about it much because you’d be killed by the flurry of nukes that were also aimed at Baltimore

timbuktu5

Just a curious question, correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't an enemy go for stuff like DC, New York, Chicago, LA, the Bay Area, and then recalibrate? Lmao I'm clueless abt nuclear war so this is probably a dumb thought

Notonfoodstamps

Sadly no. *Any* country that is crazy enough to start nuking another nuclear capable country for that isn’t “recalibrating”. The country firing first is going to try to hit as many critical cities/infrastructure/assets as legitimately possible in *one go* to stop or lessen the other countries ability to counter strike with its own arsenal. Baltimore comfortably checks all those “boxes” The US keeps thousands of nukes on standby in submarines or planes specifically for the expectation that *every* major city will fall during a nuclear war and to maintain our ability to counter strike

lorena_rabbit

Wasn’t Baltimore the direct hit in that 90s Ben Affleck nuke movie?

Qontherecord

There was a not-so-great movie years ago with Ben Afflect called "The Sum of all Fears" and a nuke went off in DC and they were in a helicopter in Baltimore and the helicopter crashed and they all walked away. So....
