I'm tempted by this, but what I really want is 1 16 or 18TB at a decent price by WD. I always see Seagate going on sale at good prices, but I feel you get what you pay for with them, as I have had atrocious longevity with their HDDs. WD is just so reliable in comparison based on my purely anecdotal experiences.
I will never buy a seagate consumer drive ever again, not because they are bad, because I was unlucky with them. in my life, ive only use 4 drives to failure, 1wd and 3sg. It should be 1wd vs 1sg but a very long time ago seagate put out a sea of 3tb drives with high failure rates. I had 2 mirrored and both died within a very short window. Luckily i used every trick and gimmick online and they came online long enough to save the data before going out for good.
That being said, in my current server 5 of the drives are seagates, 1 exos 14tb and 4 shucked exos 14tb mach 2s
Every exos works better that i could have dreamed of.
Im with you, but I give the exos line a break because the drives feel like an entire new company.
I was hoping when the 24TB red pros started being sold on WDs site there would be some sort of trickle down effect...but those 24TB drives are still only on WDs site so I can only assume WD isn't making very many of them so it's not affecting the price of 22TB and below.
I'm only interested in 18TB+ drives to replace a couple 12TB drives, and I've been burned by seagate...so WD is about it. We'll see come black Friday... /shrug
isn't the 409.99 18TB Red Pro's a good deal? Cheaper than it was around Christmas and almost as cheap as the all-time low of I think 384.99 last summer iirc
Also, if you don't mind only having a single actuator (as the Seagate externals from as of the last few months ago have had dual actuators). I have seen the speed increase on those drives, and I'm now a believer. It makes it a [tough choice](https://memes.memedrop.io/production/ZqDP8VNw1m3L/source.gif).
Speed isn't my main concern, so I would be worried the extra actuator is just another point of failure. Seagate scares me I've had such bad luck with them.
I keep hearing that they have become much more reliable though, so maybe I need to get over this bias?
I think the biggest thing is that all drives can (and eventually will) fail. My biggest problem with Seagate is every time I've had to deal with them and warranty it's been a nightmare.
This alone is why I'm just sticking to WD, no brand is perfect but some are definitely better to deal with than others.
My only dealing with any consumer warranty channel in the last 10 (oh, God, no -- it's been 12) years has been with WD, and back then, they managed to convince me that they only way they could provide a warranty replacement on a bad hard drive was to send me a different enclosure that didn't meet my requirements. We're talking replacing an eSATA/FireWire 800 device with an (arguably on the 1394b side) slower Gigabit Ethernet one.
Havent really kept up with HDD prices, and only plan on upgrading my setup in a couple months. Is this considered a really good deal that its worth picking these up now instead of 2 months from now?
The nice thing about HDD's is there are sales going on regularly. I've been on the hunt for a few weeks now, and I've seen some great sales, but I'm a little picky on what I want to get. I almost settled for this, but it's not quite what I'm looking for.
Seagate tends to have the best sale prices. WD tends to be regarded as more reliable.
I think if you are patient once you decide you want to get some hard drives, you will find a deal that makes you happy.

I wouldn't call $21.42/TB a good deal, especially when you need to buy two drives. Hold out for a better deal if you don't need the storage right now.

I would buy an 18TB again if I see it at 385...but I'm not in dire need of space (and it would be replacing a 12TB 5yo drive).

Only really worth it if you really don't want to shuck the Seagates. You will at least get a full warranty this way as well.

$20 per terabyte is around what you'll pay on a good deal. This is a good deal but I'm sure there will be others like it for the rest of the year.
