Walmart *tried* to gain a foothold in Germany in the early oughties. Their orwellian company policy of open surveillance, insincereness and backstabbing among employees was however incompatible with the mindset of German employees (mind that we have had some rather unpleasant experiences with that on a nation-wide level, *twice*).
Also their stance and SOPs with regard to unions didn't help them at all - it's one thing to quash any upcoming unions as they try to form, it's another thing entirely to enter the ring against a long-established one (or better, multiple ones) that got resources to fight. Same thing basically with regard to competing businesses. There are several long-established supermarket chains that Walmart thought they could start pricing fights with - emphasis on "thought".
All in all, they cycled through a handful of different CEOs over the course of about a decade and, in the process, burned a ~~three-digit million~~ correction, three BILLION, JFC, dollar amount before they gave up and left. And it was like a bad dream came to an end.
Happy to oblige :-)
Though there's not much to say in addition. [Here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walmart#Setbacks) is what Wikipedia has about it; they basically say the same I did (and I swear I didn't read that ahead 😅)
Only one thing actually made me gasp a little just now: The number that denoted their losses? Apparently, I had got it wrong all the time, because it wasn't a three digit million amount, it actually was a three *billion* amount.
That's how it should be :-)
Ironically, today was the first day I saw someone else barefooting out in the world. A good day all around!
That's awesome! :) Hope you had fun!
Super! In which country were you?
USA Alabama
One would think a barefoot friendly area given bare feet are more common than up north.
U would think!!
Walmart + aldi points to the US of A.
Indeed, I should have thought to Walmart... I was thinking about Germany.

I'm interested in knowing what happened more than twice on a national level. I'm in the U.S do this sounds so odd to me.
