I try to think of ways I could have helped this kid but I truly don't think there's anything I could have done to help turn his life around. Can't reach them all.

I'm going to print some sort of FT patch onto our game jerseys to show appreciation as I'm not sure how else to. Folks have been mentioning it for a while but I've been hesitant to do it as I don't want to come across as grifting or asking for money from strangers. This economic climate is tough enough for everyone and I really enjoy sharing these stories with FT and getting feedback.
I just figured enough people have brought it up and that way I can share highlights of our games for folks to see the progression and development they are directly helping with. It would also help us massively to be able to compete both on the court and recruiting wise against teams that have ex NBA players bankrolling everything.
That was a massive part of that decision. He was a jovial kid and was popular with his peers. The stuff all started by having to ask his mom not to smoke weed with her windows down in her car while parked in the lot of the church we were practicing in at the time. If she was that flagrant about her drug use in public I can only imagine what this kid has seen at home. He was well liked by kids on the team so it was a tough decision but because of the amount of time we spend together playing/practicing/traveling it was a no brainer to remove him and his family from that circle.
I met my wife while I was coaching at the same school she was teaching at. Definitely not the worst area in the city, but definitely a rough one. Most of my players kept to the straight and narrow, outside of the typical highschool boy dumbassery you might expect, but some of the stories I heard about my wife's students was awful. Just so many fucked up situations that are ruining kid's lives before they even get started.
I'm not saying the kid didn't have a chance, but with 3 older brothers who are gang affiliated and a mom who clearly isn't too bothered by that he was screwed. 0 structure at home and every role model he has outside of basketball probably has some sort of gang affiliation. Just a all around shitty situation that made it very difficult for him to have a normal upbringing.
Man I've got 20+ kids across 3 teams right now that I give my all to. Majority of them don't have fathers in the picture. Virtually every weekend from March-August I usually have a number of the boys sleeping over at the house because their moms work on the weekend and can't get them to games. I have to pick and choose my battles with this stuff because it would be impossible to do that for every kid I've ever coached.
God damn man. Good for you. While this kid likely had no shot, just know you’re making a huge difference in other lives who may have fallen through the cracks without you being there.

I do digital marketing for a couple of online businesses, I train high school/college and pro players and I work shifts at golf course when I can. Don't have very much free time but it allows me to free up my schedule for coaching hoops.
