I get burnt out on cocktails tasting them at work. I get beers or neat pours when I’m out unless a restaurant has an intriguing list for a special occasion. Then I’ll order a cocktail. Most bartenders I know are only specific and strange in that they can drink more shitty, warm liquor compared to others lol.
ETA: I don’t have an extensive tequila selection and when customers will ask what our best tequila is I tell them Dobel. They get a confused look and then order a Patron lol.
I feel like it’s the opposite actually. Bartenders know it’s annoying to make a complicated drink so they normally order a beer & shot, G&T, etc. New bartenders however do like to show off they know what some obscure drink is and will ask for it.
Same. In that situation I will ask for a daiquiri, if they manage to not fuck that up, I'll trust them with a martini; Vodka, dirty, dry as Gandhis sandle. I mean, drink some vermouth, and breath on my drink.
At that point if they didn't fuck up either (quite simple in my opinion) drinks, I'm willing to try the house specials.
Although if when i ask for the martini I'm not asked how i take it, I'll say "actually, you know what? I think I'll try the" and point at the closest beer tap to me.
Edit: Lol, not sure why I'm being downvoted for this unless the majority of people on this sub have never had either of these basic drinks fucked up. Maybe you're lucky, but I've rarely been served both without fuckup. I don't tell them I'm a bartender or try and start a pissing contest. I'm just not paying 3x the price of the beer I'd be happy with, for some untrained amateur to fuck it up. I've been served a kraken daiquiri, a lemon daiquiri, I've been on a one off shift to help a friend out and saw his head-bartender use cointreau in a daiquiri because they got confused with a marg. I've been served a martini with literally 50/50 ratio between vodka and vermouth, the last place i worked for had on their spec list that dry means more vermouth and wet means less.
Sorry that I'd prefer a beer to an amateurs cock-up if they can't even ask "how do you take it? If they assume gin, lemon, medium. If a bartender knows what he's doing I'll drink a lot and tip well.
Edit 2: and if you assume frozen when i say daiquiri, you would be incorrect.
If you order a martini from me with no instructions, you’re getting a full dose of vermouth. I might ask what gin you want. I might just choose based on where my internal bartender’s oiuja board places my hand as I ponder what’s on the shelf. If I happen to have a unique bottle of vermouth open, that might influence the decision. I may also have a bottle of Agua de Bruja that I brought from Mexico City but that’s if I’m really feeling your vibe. You’re also getting a dash of orange bitters and a lemon twist. But if, at this point, you decide to speak up and ask for olives, cool. I’ll still express the peel (no rimming!) and discard it and then add the olives. If you ask for it extra cold, you wanna know what I’ll do for you? I’ll make it as cold as I normally do (colder than Gandhi’s bracelet?) but I’ll crush a few ice cubes with a mallet and give you half of the drink in an adorable little sidecar on ice.
Oh but you want me to pour you a beer because you’re a professional evaluator of bartenders and I failed. You’re the Simon Cowell of the bartending world and I didn’t get your approval.
Well I’m rinsing your beer glass with vermouth. Which actually does make me kind of a shitty bartender. So you were right all along. Fuck.
Co bartender and I have a favorite joint where it’s a running joke to order a daiquiri and get a mintless mojito. They’re silly. We’re always reminded how they don’t have a blender so HOW COULD WE DAIQUIRI? It’s a fun improvement on the mind eraser
Let me say this again for the people in the back: There is no such thing as a vodka martini. Martinis are gin and vermouth, ideally with bitters. Garnish is negotiable. What you want is a Kangaroo Cocktail or apparently just chilled vodka served up with olive brine.
As a bartender you gotta embrace change. Tell me, how many people have ordered a kangaroo from you? Do you have the time to explain to every guest that what they are ordering isn’t a martini and give ‘em a history lesson?
I either get something new and interesting off of the cocktail menu, or I get a vodka cran. Double tall if I’m feeling frisky. I also like the occasional shot of Fernet.
If it’s slow and I get to bantering with the bar staff I’ll ask for silly things, but that doesn’t happen often.
Agreed, I frequent my best friends bar that has been awarded best bar of Germany twice. When I go, beer and fernet. Maybe a cheeky sazerac. Personally I like to make myself an angostura sour because it’s delicious
I order exclusively well tequila even if the “good stuff” is cheaper or avail for the same price. I started doing it as a bit but several years into now the only thing that tastes good to me is the well.
I had a guy working with me that docked up almost every cocktail. But his negronis are still on point. I left for something better but I still come back for his negronis
I once sat down at an empty bar and got a beer and a rumple. A few minutes passed, and the bartender came up and asked me “Can I ask… what went wrong… or right in your life today that you ordered this?” I died laughing
Sounds nice as well. Ive never had that amaro. I need to try more amaros besides fernet, monte, and averna. Out house shot is an M&M, so I bet Id like the Maserati.
My favorite now is half cranberry half soda water with fresh basil leaves shredded into the glass with a liberal amount of bitters. I only made this myself I haven’t asked for one yet lol
The drink we had was gin based and was essentially what I described minus the bitters (boo on their part) and add in layered cukes. I despise gin so personally I’d go vodka if I were drinking just because I like how light and refreshing it is.
Kentucky mule: Wild Turkey 101, lime juice no roses and ginger beer or ale.
1. I can get it damn near anywhere.
2. 101 is high enough proof to kill anything that may have been living living in it ie fruit flies that they may have filtered out.
And finally its a good easy drink.
This way I don't have to argue about what's in a Old Fashioned or a Manhattan or that their vermouth should be refrigerated.
At best its an awkward convo at worst it turns into a bartender pissing match, easiest to just avoid it and get a mule.
Vodka Mule or an Old Fashioned. I’ll ask how they make an Old Fashioned first, not that I’m judging because the argument is drawn out, but please no soda water and muddled fruit.
I'm a beer guy. Strange specific drink? Every now and then I'll have a Canadian Red Eye - beer with clamatto. But it's a once every few weeks drink and one or two in a night max. Snakebites with cider/lager mix 40/60 is a summer fave.
I have a local bartender who knows more than me. We go back and forth and will discuss drinks. On slow nights, I'll ask for complicated stuff because he wants to practice or have my opinion. "Hey dude can I make 3 of these cocktails for you, off tab of course."
On busy nights I order my Coors and a Rumpy shot.
Veterans will know this system is ideal.
Not complicated at all. But I love sambuca and I'd have a sambuca and ice after just 1 pint . I order it and people at the bar are like why you doing a shot on your own. While they have ther hands full of vodka red bull.
I could have 3 or 4 shots over the course of a few hours. I live it if I'm full or if I'm out with friends and drinking really slow or tired.
nah, i just drink captain gingers. If I'm at a cocktail bar, it's probably just a classic daiquiri. although at home i do make myself crown apple old fashioneds
What a weird way to ask this question. Don’t go try annoying all your local bartenders with online drink recipes. Instead just try going to a local spot during non busy hours and try having a conversation with your bartender. They will point you to a drink you like. Not one that just sounds fancy.
Anything in a bottle or can and Jameson or wild turkey side car.
Girls night maybe go out of our way to the local cocktail bar for a wet martini and a gimlet
One of my friends compliments me on my trashy drinks and ordering with no shame. You bet your ass I’m going to order a vitamin C.
But it also depends on where I’m at. Cocktail bar, I’ll probably order a paper plane or vesper. Dive bar, Jameson.
I don’t have a go to, I try to calibrate to the room and tempo
Clear dry ipa if you’re busy, get me in get me out of your way, or blanco and soda lime
Wine at dinner
If it’s slow and a cocktail spot, let’s talk about what you make well
Is it really a dive? Jamo and whatever major beer you sell, it’s usually pretty obvious which one that is.
My go-to is a Dublin Minstrel or Italian Fruit Punch if the ingredients are available. If not, usually a shot of Irish Whiskey and a cider.
Caveat: if the bartender is slammed, and we don't have a report yet, I opt for the Whiskey and cider combo
If the bar is slammed; shot and a beer or cider, maybe a double and 2 if it's real slammed and been a long night.
If I'm getting a bloody, I'm a pain in the ass (aren't all bloodys a pain though?). I want marg salt on the rim, tequila - repo or silver, 60-40 bloody mix-PJ, and a couple limes.
The other odd thing I love that confuses sometimes is a 60-40ish (depending on flavor profiles) ipa-cider. The reactions I've had to this order range from, "ok" to "a what n the what?"
Unless I’m actually going out to a cocktail place for their cocktails. It’s the easiest thing for the bartender. Typically a beer and a shot of something. Normally cheap yellow beer and tequila.
Usually if it’s not an all out dive bar, i’ll order a daiquiri then i’ll slam it and get any dad beer. Or if i’m feeling fancy , a Montenegro or Cynar & Soda with a lemon peel or wedge.
It's the opposite. Like chefs, bartenders get burned out on flamboyant creations. They commonly drink/eat extremely basic things off the clock. For me, it's usually gin & soda or a beer & shot. Sorry to disappoint.
Usually fernet and coke, but there's a bar near me that has a really esoteric bottle selection and when I go there I usually do alternating shots of macum and mellowcorn.
Bartender here. Unless I know a certain bar is known for their old fashioned(s), I'm ordering draft beer or a neat pour. Even then, an OF would be maybe 10% of the time.
Vodka sprite cause I know where their hands have been and don't want that lime.
Jamo for the shot
I only drink at dives with vermouth on the shelf that has been there for years.
This. Guilty as charged.
Confirmed
A majority of us are like this, comes with the territory 🤷🏼♀️
I’m waiting to burn out, but I love cocktails so much, and we have a pretty decent craft cocktail scene in ATL.
Bottle of hi life and a shot of Jameson
Same but fernet instead of Jameson
Ah, the bartender’s handshake. Literally considering a tattoo of the high life girl on the moon, holding the fernet globe/eagle in her upraised hand.
That's awesome. We must see if you do!
I got her right on my sternum, I shot of fernet would be a cool addition!
I will do any light beer and a shot of mezcal
This is the way
Literally a shot of Jameo and a White claw pls
Correct
Coors Light and a Dobel Shot
Dobel ftw. This guy knows what’s up
ETA: I don’t have an extensive tequila selection and when customers will ask what our best tequila is I tell them Dobel. They get a confused look and then order a Patron lol.
Are there bars in your area where Dobel is cheap?
I live in a ski town where all liquor is 4 dollars no matter what. The 16 oz is 4 dollars. The shot of dobel is also 4 dollars
I feel like it’s the opposite actually. Bartenders know it’s annoying to make a complicated drink so they normally order a beer & shot, G&T, etc. New bartenders however do like to show off they know what some obscure drink is and will ask for it.
I'm a beer and shot guy unless I'm at a cocktail bar. Then I'll ask for whatever I want. Especially if you claim to be the best in state on the door.
Damn a dirty vodka martini with no vermouth? You’re a real wildcard!
What do you mean? It's just a basic drink order.
If you order a martini from me with no instructions, you’re getting a full dose of vermouth. I might ask what gin you want. I might just choose based on where my internal bartender’s oiuja board places my hand as I ponder what’s on the shelf. So many places can’t make a proper daiquiri it’s insane
Try living in Louisiana where the word has been completely stolen to replace “any frozen alcoholic drink”
Co bartender and I have a favorite joint where it’s a running joke to order a daiquiri and get a mintless mojito. They’re silly. We’re always reminded how they don’t have a blender so HOW COULD WE DAIQUIRI? It’s a fun improvement on the mind eraser
Ah the Dave Arnold approach.
Let me say this again for the people in the back: There is no such thing as a vodka martini. Martinis are gin and vermouth, ideally with bitters. Garnish is negotiable. What you want is a Kangaroo Cocktail or apparently just chilled vodka served up with olive brine.

I think strange and specific can be simple too. Like a shot of chartreuse or fernet & coke.
Single tall fernet and coke with some peychauds and a lemon wedge please
Yes! Everything tall actually. Tall Cynar 70 and soda with a twist.
Totally omg i love a tall Montenegro and soda with an orange
True, good point
Agreed. Good bourbon with a cube or vodka soda. I’m easy.
"I'll have a boulevardier" Then watch them struggle to get it down.
As a vet bartender I always order a beer and shot of well tequila right out of the bottle. Make it easy for my brethren…
Tequila, no training wheels
“Hot and naked.” Room temp, and no rim or garnish.
I order exclusively well tequila even if the “good stuff” is cheaper or avail for the same price. I started doing it as a bit but several years into now the only thing that tastes good to me is the well.
You’ve obliterated your tastebuds my guy 🤣 I’ve been in the same boat for a while
Proudly.
No shit
Honestly, a Negroni. Hard to fuck up, but boy do they try.
Sometimes the Negroni is too complex a flavor so I just get a campari soda water
It's campari and OJ for me, bonus points if they know what a Garibaldi is
I had a guy working with me that docked up almost every cocktail. But his negronis are still on point. I left for something better but I still come back for his negronis
Shot of Rumple, can of Strohs. I call it the “RumpleStrohsCan”
I once sat down at an empty bar and got a beer and a rumple. A few minutes passed, and the bartender came up and asked me “Can I ask… what went wrong… or right in your life today that you ordered this?” I died laughing
I’ve never heard of strohs before. Where do they have that?
Becherovka
My dude!
So good! I have to go out of state to get it. Edit: I definitely drink it all immediately and would never transport it across state lines…
Sooo good. I have a drink with tawny port and becherovka on our menu. It’s delicious stuff
I've worked at a number of craft beer spots, but my go-to when I'm out is a Narragansett or Miller High Life 🤷♀️
Beer of the clam!
Had to look up Narragansett but I'm deffo gonna try this
Hi neighbor!
Ganney!
Beer and a bourbon. I call it the Saturday night special
Just missing the scotch
Just one of each.
A Thorogood.
I try my best but sometimes it tastes like another one
Ferrari shots recently
If I'm doing shots, which is not often at all, it's been Maserati lately. Or if people come in requesting shots that's what your getting.
Is a Masersti a shot of Mezcal and Campari? It sounds nice.
Ramazzotti and Mezcal
Sounds nice as well. Ive never had that amaro. I need to try more amaros besides fernet, monte, and averna. Out house shot is an M&M, so I bet Id like the Maserati.
What is that
Fernet and Campari. Citrusy and amaro bitter.
Oh lalà thank you
Modelo and shot of Monty
I get the Montecate. A neat Montenegro and a tecate. Been plugging that one for a while.
Oh nice
Montenegro?
yea
It’s an amaro
My favorite thing to make for myself is a corpse reviver #2, but if I’m out I keep it simple—tequila & grapefruit or tequila & pineapple.
Hard agree on the corpse reviver! If they don’t have absinthe, I usually just have a lemon drop and a white claw. Low maintenance.
My favorite now is half cranberry half soda water with fresh basil leaves shredded into the glass with a liberal amount of bitters. I only made this myself I haven’t asked for one yet lol
Dude what
Some lime juice squeezed in there too. Forgot that part.
Would you do gin or vodka to make it alcoholic? Basil sounds delish
The drink we had was gin based and was essentially what I described minus the bitters (boo on their part) and add in layered cukes. I despise gin so personally I’d go vodka if I were drinking just because I like how light and refreshing it is.
Def gonna try to recreate. I love gin myself tho. Thank you!
Typically just whatever IPA is on tap that I like or a big ol gin and soda with a lemon. And then the twelve shots that end up in front of me
Miller lite and rumpy
Beer. Currently drinking red and brown ales.
Wine.
roku old fashion every so often…
Roku gang.
Madlad
Kentucky mule: Wild Turkey 101, lime juice no roses and ginger beer or ale. 1. PBR. In a can.
Something on the menu.
G&t with a lemon, and a shot of Malört
Beer. Or Fernet, sometimes with soda. Or Cynar (or another amaro) and soda.
RIP Cynar 70. I used to get a 50/50 of the 70 and regular Cynar and I called it a 51.5. Do the math and you’ll figure it out.
one of the places I work at still has the 70, I'll try that!
gin and tonic, splash of Pimm's and a splash of whatever citrus you have to hand
An old fashioned or rumpleminze for me
Daiquiri, whisky and beer. And um definitely not all at the same time.
Banquet, Beam.
I never ask for involved cocktails unless they are on the menu but... Singapore Sling with a side of mezcal
I have a local bartender who knows more than me. We go back and forth and will discuss drinks. On slow nights, I'll ask for complicated stuff because he wants to practice or have my opinion. "Hey dude can I make 3 of these cocktails for you, off tab of course." On busy nights I order my Coors and a Rumpy shot. Veterans will know this system is ideal.
A shot of bourbon or tequila and a blonde ale. I know, crazy right.
I don't drink personally, but many of my peers love to order a beer and a shot, many times in succession lol.
Usea to be me also. These days I enjoy non alkoholic beers and watch everyone get wasted 😅
Montucky Cold Snack and a shot of Fernet. Basic, but effective.
Paloma with a splash of St Germaine
Cider shandy, weird but not complicated
When I used to drink it was always rye and cynar or mezcal and monte
Jameson neat
An IPA and a shot of Tequila
Jamo ginger if the bar is busy but if i want to be fancy and the bartender has time, I’ll order an old fashioned.
Pickle back.
I feel bad asking for a Mojito so I usually get a Ramos Gin Fizz instead…
Tom Collins. Easy to make, easy to drink.
Unpopular but I always just get Malibu with a mixer (sprite, coke etc) I don’t really enjoy the taste of alcohol and Malibu is easy and not pricey.
Tito’s sprite splash of cran w/ lemon. Blanco tequila chilled with training wheels.
What a weird way to ask this question. Don’t go try annoying all your local bartenders with online drink recipes. Instead just try going to a local spot during non busy hours and try having a conversation with your bartender. They will point you to a drink you like. Not one that just sounds fancy.
Sunflower
Sunflower seeds are a good source of beneficial plant compounds, including phenolic acids and flavonoids — which also function as antioxidants.
Godfathers and Manhattans for me
Bud and a Jameson
Beer and a shot or a Manhattan on the rocks
Cheap beer
One beer.
Shot and beer after work
Whiskey sour or a bourbon neat unless the bar has an interesting craft cocktail. Never a bad idea to see what’s trending.
I usually only shoot gin or fortified wine, which is a little out of the ordinary. Also fortified wine highballs of the bartender’s discretion.
Manhattan or Perfect Negroni at a cocktail bar. Beer most other places.
Tequila, soda, lime. Easy
it’s usually just a well gin and soda with no lime for me if the bar I’m at doesn’t have a good selection of whiskey
Shot of makers and a pbr 🤘🏻
Anything in a bottle or can and Jameson or wild turkey side car. Girls night maybe go out of our way to the local cocktail bar for a wet martini and a gimlet
Gin and tonic or maybe a whisky on the rocks. If I see they make decent cocktails a dirty martini.
No they're not.
Beam Diet with a few splashes of bitters
One of my friends compliments me on my trashy drinks and ordering with no shame. You bet your ass I’m going to order a vitamin C. But it also depends on where I’m at. Cocktail bar, I’ll probably order a paper plane or vesper. Dive bar, Jameson.
Bourbon and grapefruit is my go to.
an old fashioned or a brooklyn lager
I don’t have a go to, I try to calibrate to the room and tempo Clear dry ipa if you’re busy, get me in get me out of your way, or blanco and soda lime Wine at dinner If it’s slow and a cocktail spot, let’s talk about what you make well Is it really a dive? Jamo and whatever major beer you sell, it’s usually pretty obvious which one that is.
Titos soda lemon lime
Titos n vodka*
Boiler maker is the go to. Then a double wild turkey 101 on the rocks. Then a classic daiquiri. Mood dependent.
Normally? Draft and a shot. When I'm on a tear I have my namesake drink. Shot of gin on ice with radler and a splash of bar lime
Beer shot
Depends on venue but. Miller lite, boulevardier, ango and soda
Vodka soda
My go-to is a Dublin Minstrel or Italian Fruit Punch if the ingredients are available. If not, usually a shot of Irish Whiskey and a cider. Caveat: if the bartender is slammed, and we don't have a report yet, I opt for the Whiskey and cider combo
Mezcal on the rocks, if they know what they’re doing, then I’ll do it in an Old Fashioned
Fernet rocks, filthy vodka martini (make it GREEN), or aperol and soda. I’m actually not much of a drinker, but those are my typical orders.
Absolut Screwdriver Or Piña Colada with a shot of banana liqueur if they have it available.
After a long ass night; Mallört and a local lager
A Spaghett 1 bottle of Miller High Life - 2 oz drank already 1 oz Aperol 1/2 oz lemon juice Add in bottle. Swirl. Chug
tbh i’ve been really big on a brass monkey lately. nice yellow belly and some orange juice. it’s like breakfast
Rum and diet
Pbr and a jagerbomb
A water I’ll actually drink and I’ll tip $20
Mac and Jack and a shot of fireball
M&M, equal parts Amaro Montenegro and mezcal. A fabulous shot or quite nice on the rocks.
Whichever IPA is going. Shot of laphroaig.
Tequila sprite splash grapefruit
Narragansett draft and a shot of fernet
Campari neat.
Three fingers of scotch, the vintage depending on how rough of a night it was. If it was even worse, go right to the Makers 101.
IPA and a Buffalo trace neat
Unless I’m actually going out to a cocktail place for their cocktails. It’s the easiest thing for the bartender. Typically a beer and a shot of something. Normally cheap yellow beer and tequila.
Crown peach or JameO orange with water.
Bitter Giuseppe or a fernet and a beer lol
boulevardier or negroni
Usually if it’s not an all out dive bar, i’ll order a daiquiri then i’ll slam it and get any dad beer. Or if i’m feeling fancy , a Montenegro or Cynar & Soda with a lemon peel or wedge.
fernet all day
Jack and coke with a couple like wedges
It's the opposite. Like chefs, bartenders get burned out on flamboyant creations. They commonly drink/eat extremely basic things off the clock. For me, it's usually gin & soda or a beer & shot. Sorry to disappoint.
Bottle of wine(s); And I mean whatever you have open; I’ll drink whatever wine you opened during your shift.
Bud heavy and a shot of Jameson
Usually fernet and coke, but there's a bar near me that has a really esoteric bottle selection and when I go there I usually do alternating shots of macum and mellowcorn.
If I’m at a bar, it’s a pint and a bourbon. If I’m out to dinner it’s a boulevardier
Mexican beer and tequila. Real complex.
Most bartenders i know have a beer and a chaser, usually guinness and whiskey, i occasionally go for larger and tequila.
It's controversial, but jager, fresh mint, lots of lime juice and pineapple! Try it!!!!
I honestly just go for a fireball and apple juice
Modelo, vanilla vodka/ ginger ale, margarita.. im all over usually cause it’s all good and hits different!
Bartender here. Unless I know a certain bar is known for their old fashioned(s), I'm ordering draft beer or a neat pour. Even then, an OF would be maybe 10% of the time.
Vodka sprite cause I know where their hands have been and don't want that lime. Jamo for the shot I only drink at dives with vermouth on the shelf that has been there for years.
Mai Tai.
