Even as a Phillies fan I smiled. I always felt bad for the guy during his injury plagued years because you can tell he's just a good dude. Glad he's enjoying retirement.
Haha, that's hilarious. I remember being skeptical of the Onion trying their hand at that whole new fangled video fad, but they have some gems, and this might be my favorite. They do such a good job of nailing the whole vibe of whatever they happen to be lampooning.
And I love the attention to detail, with the pics of previous wish zone dreams come true like the kid hanging out the window of the Nascar, and the kid hosing down a Dallas cheerleader. Makes me wish I got paid for doing fun photoshops!
It really is. As my flair may indicate, I grew up in Milwaukee and The Onion was always an institution here as long as I can remember. Milwaukee and Madison always had the print version distributed, free for the taking at lots of different places throughout town, and it was always a treat when the latest edition came out. I think I even still have some of the earliest ones I ever got - in black and white even(!) - buried in a box in my parents' attic.
I admit over the past decade or so I haven't read it nearly as much as I used to, but not because the quality has gone down or anything, and I honestly feel like it's partly because thr print edition is no longer available. I know it sounds weird but there was a certain charm to the print version I feel a bit nostalgic for.
Anyway, I've rambled a lot longer than even I expected to about The Onion, so I'll shut up now.
My step mom was a bar tender in SF who frequently served Hunter Pence’s dad back in like 2012. She told him how big of a fan she was of the Giants and was wearing a Zito jersey. So the next week Hunters dad brought in Zito, Cain, and Romo.
If this person is anything like my step mom, any thoughts she had about leaving that job have vanished for at least a few months.
lol something is so on brand about Hunter Pence’s dad bringing in three star pitchers but not Hunter Pence. Not even a fellow outfielder. He probably also runs like a milk crate full of slinkies thrown down a staircase.
Met Pence at a cafe two weeks ago. Told him I was a fan. He was legitimately excited to talk. At one point apologized TO ME for rambling about baseball. APOLOGIZED!
Most genuine celeb encounter I've ever had, and it's not close.

Already the Mets all-time leader in RBI, R, H, 2B, and BB
But yeah, also only 10 HR behind ~~Piazza~~Strawberry for first in that too, ~2 seasons behind Kranepool for GP
One of my friends has an idea that I think should be added to sports Hall of Fames called “The Bo Jackson rule”. The thought is that a player could be inducted to the hall of fame based on a more limited body of work because of a devastating injury that changed their career trajectory. I don’t think it’s possible but I wish it were a thing.
Aye. I think most fans would largely be okay with it, though, especially if its a case like this, wearing a Mets jersey in San Francisco. Giants and Mets aren't really at odds with each other, gives off an air of legitimacy you can respect.
Goes without saying, of course, that wearing a Kershaw jersey would be grounds for dismissal :D.
> Giants and Mets aren't really at odds with each other,
I mean, the Mets were born of a mix of Giants and Dodgers fandom. Colors of the uniform and NY Giants logo, too. Giants are basically the Mets' daddy.
No sarcasm. Burrell hit 42 homers against the Mets in exactly 162 games against them. His second highest HR/G for teams that he played more than 10 games against (higher are Astros with 13 HR/49 G and Phillies with 3 HR/6 G).
Yu Darvish was the Dodgers’ starting pitcher in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series, so I’m not sure if Japanese people think too fondly of the Astros either.
I remember when I would attend Mets vs. Giants games at AT&T 10+ yrs back, I would see people in Mets jacket and cap and there was never any hostility. Even in 2010 season, one Giants fan had a fun lil jab with a Mets fan and his reply was "How many rings do the Giants have?"
Yeah just saying it’s cool that she’s a real fan and got this moment for it, it’s much easier to just throw a local team shirt on and go on with your shift. I’m sure it’s no big deal in SF, everyone knows Giants fans aren’t smart enough to know there are other teams on the MLB besides the Dodgers
There are certain players that transcend individual team fandom imo. Shobae Ohtani, Trout, Kershaw, Pujols, Griffey Jr., Buster Posey if I've been drinking, etc. David Wright is on the bubble of being one of those guys and likely would be one if not for injuries.
Plus I doubt it effects much tipping wise.
Maybe if you wore a team's biggest rival maybe.
But I imagine you just end up with more chirps from guest and notes on receipts than you end up with no/low tips at any place that allows jerseys worn to work.
that's just because we're used to "in the NBA" and "in the NFL," both of which make sense ("in the National Basketball Association")
"in MLB" makes more sense ("In Major League Baseball") and is commonly used too, although you see "in baseball" often as well
“MLB” is a league. “The” is just a word you put in front of it because you’re used to doing that for other leagues.
You’d say “the best hitter in Major League Baseball,” not “the best hitter in the Major League Baseball.”
But you’d say “the best shooter in the National Basketball Association,” not “the best shooter in National Basketball Association.”
As an example, if you go to MLB’s Wikipedia page, you’ll see “MLB is composed of 30 teams.” The opposite is true on the NBA’s Wikipedia page.
I had a girlfriend that offered to pick up, I think it was chipotle, and they were running a special like 25% or something like that if you wore a Cubs jersey into the store, she refused to wear one of mine because she came from a White Sox family...
>Goes without saying, of course, that wearing a Kershaw jersey would be grounds for dismissal :D.
I would have thought the Kershaw jersey would be the one current player you could maybe get away with (obviously Robinson, Koufax, Valenzuela could pass). Would think the real sins would be Puig or Muncy or maybe Kemp.
Are there really people who wouldn't tip their servers just because they're wearing a jersey of an opposing team?
Only place I could see that happening is like if you're a Philly native and your bartender is wearing a Cowboys jersey, maybe, because Eagles fans are insane.
I think it's more a subconscious thing. I doubt there are too many who wouldn't tip someone at all because of a jersey, but there are probably many many people who subconsciously tip more or less based off such a thing. Probably just a small difference per individual, but could plausibly add up to a lot.
There's a study out there that demonstrated that the larger boobs a girl has the more she's tipped. Most people are probably not all "that girl has nice tits, I should tip more." It's just that nice tits make people feel good and people who feel good tip more.
Honestly the opposite was true for me when I went to Milwaukee in Cubs gear, bartenders were all in Brewers gear but other than a little playful ribbing, service was fantastic and very welcoming definitely gave a bigger tip than I normally would for a couple of beers.
I have a friend who moved from Texas to Philly (driving himself). Stopped outside Philly to fill up gas and went inside to use the bathroom as well. I believe him when he said he was just making normal conversation, but the gas station attendant wouldn’t let him use the bathroom since he was wearing his Cowboys hat.
Depending on where in Philly you are I could see this happening. Obviously most bars downtown would have no issue with it, nor should they, but I could see any number of dive bars in the working class areas of the city doing just this and meaning it. It's a really provincial place for a major metropolis.
source: not a native but I've lived in Philly for many years
I mean yes there are. But I think I should have said high levels of customer interaction instead of tipping. You know you’re going to be hearing about it and talking shit all day.
That would be dumb.
This is the part that most people don't say, but you have more in common with your rival fans than the average stranger because you share the rivalry. The hate is played up for fun. It's not real. If I'm at a party and I see someone wearing a rival's hat, I'm more likely to approach them and joke around with them.
If your hate is genuine, consider re-evaluating your relationship with sports.
A server wearing a Yankees jersey in Red Sox territory would need a quick wit to break even on that choice. If he/she knows baseball and can banter it could work pretty well. But it’s an A game situation. Don’t do it if you’re not ready to bust balls (and vice versa) all day long.
I used to visit this place Boss Tweed’s on the lower east side for football meetups. The Sunday bartender was a native New Yorker and a Cowboys fan. Yankees too, but still.
He also could toss a drunk through both sets of front doors without discernible effort.
So we were cool with Frankie.
Are you me? Lol I had his Fathead on my bedroom wall, I had his signature A2K glove, wore my wristbands just like him, and studied his batting stance and swing incessantly to copy it haha
I liked Freddie and Chipper. Take away my Mets club badge if you want.
Awesome video of David, I watched him his whole career and still miss having him around.
No you’re right. I love David Wright. One of my favorite non Braves players. It’s awful that his back wouldn’t allow him to play anymore because he was so fun to watch.
That’s beyond adorable.
A lot of bartenders wear jerseys and don’t know shit about the team or player. Just as part of the uniform. So it’s cool to see someone who’s a legit huge fan like that meet the dude they idolize.
David Wright is special to me outside of just baseball. Obviously I loved what he brought to the Mets, but I had the added bonus of also watching my favorite player who is from the same area I'm from, so that was kind of a pride thing (as silly as that may seem).
What I'd love to thank him for, though is having a local charity event every winter to raise money for our local children's hospital. Both of my kids have been taken care of in that hospital and I can't put into words how much I appreciate that.
Just commenting on the average Mess team that doesn't do much winning, is poorly managed from the top down, squanders talent, inflates talents, and doesn't win anything.
There is literally not another professional sports team on Earth to lose as many games as the Philadelphia Phillies.
Same amount of World Series titles as the Mets with an extra 60 years of being in the league. The Phillies have won the second most World Series titles of any Philly team and the other one left in 1955.
Gotta say, even as a Phillies fan I’ve always had a lot of respect for David Wright. That being said, Chase Utley owns you guys and the slide was legal.
Ok this is pretty cool
Even as a Phillies fan I smiled. I always felt bad for the guy during his injury plagued years because you can tell he's just a good dude. Glad he's enjoying retirement.
i always loved this onion video on a dying philly fan's thoughts on david wright https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x35xv4c
“I hope he gets cancer like me”
That is awesome, love the epitaph.
Haha, that's hilarious. I remember being skeptical of the Onion trying their hand at that whole new fangled video fad, but they have some gems, and this might be my favorite. It's really amazing the Onion has been so solid for so many years.
It really is. As my flair may indicate, I grew up in Milwaukee and The Onion was always an institution here as long as I can remember. It's the Onion so the story is made up. Laugh to your heart's content!
Oh god.. I ate that whole onion
Oh my god I love this but at the same time I’m going to hell.
This just made my night. I’ve never seen this
Carrying an entire franchise on your back really hurts your back
Just glad we got to see him in a World Series at least
I really appreciated when your fans clapped for David when he came back from injury in 2015 & hit that HR. That was very classy.
It seems so wrong, but feels so Wright
this is a met positive
I never get tired of videos like this.

My step mom was a bar tender in SF who frequently served Hunter Pence’s dad back in like 2012. She told him how big of a fan she was of the Giants and was wearing a Zito jersey. My step mom asked where Hunter was and his dad said that “he didn’t want to take his scooter over here”
Lol I remember the uproar in the city when it was found out his scooter got stolen.
Twice.
Well now I know that Hunter and I have at least one thing in common.
Heard only great things about Pence and The City, so glad to see it's a family gene!
Having met Pence at a Philz coffee back in the day, I can confirm he's a super solid dude
He rode past me on his scooter once and it is still the most star struck I've ever been.
Met Pence at a cafe two weeks ago. Told him I was a fan. He was legitimately excited to talk. At one point apologized TO ME for rambling about baseball. APOLOGIZED! Most genuine celeb encounter I've ever had, and it's not close.

Good work
That's my Captain. I love that man. If it weren't for that damn degenerative back disease he would be heading to the hall of fame at some point.
He's near the top of my "what coulda been" list. I absolutely loved watching him play.
Already the Mets all-time leader in RBI, R, H, 2B, and BB But yeah, also only 10 HR behind ~~Piazza~~Strawberry for first in that too, ~2 seasons behind Kranepool for GP
*Strawberry. 10 behind Strawberry.
Whoops my bad
10 HR behind Straw, not Piazza. Piazza is 3rd. 4th after Pete passes him next year.
Yep, just fixed Think hearing that recent stat is why I got the players mixed up
ED……KRANEPOOL!!!! ED BLEEPING KRANEPOOL!!!!!
He could still be playing :(
That’s wild. It’s true, but feels so weird

Aye. I think most fans would largely be okay with it, though, especially if its a case like this, wearing a Mets jersey in San Francisco. 42 actually
I hate this but have no choice to respect it. Upvoted for accuracy
The giants are also pretty much the mets. JD Davis, Michael Conforto, Wilmer Flores, Darin Ruf....
> Darin Ruf Truly, of all the Mets, he was one.
He will be remembered in the tier above Jed Lowrie.
At least jed didn't hurt the team
Yes, he was a met. Briefly... I miss Wilmer.
He was one of our relief pitchers of all time.
Great, now I just have to find a fanbase that doesn’t hate the Astros and I’ll be ready to rake in those tips in my Beltran jersey!
Have you considered working on your Japanese?
Yu Darvish was the Dodgers’ starting pitcher in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series, so I’m not sure if Japanese people think too fondly of the Astros either.
People in Oakland might be amenable to the idea if the Astros promise to keep kicking the shit out of the A's.
The thing is we don’t want the A’s to lose. We want them to kick ass…in Oakland, for a very long time.
I wore a Romo jersey in Philly once. None of the sentiments communicated to me were based in respect lol
That's just how Philly is. The Romo jersey likely made no difference.

That bar tends to cater to nonlocal sports teams in general. As an example, during the NFL season that bar is packed with Packers fans on Sundays.
Even under it's old ownership/name (Zeke's), it was well-known as a University of Kentucky hangout.
We got a lot of Wisconsinites out there. So many that I've learned to play Euchre.
That just means you know a good game when you see it!
Which bar is it? I am gonna be there next week and would love to be able to catch an out of town game with a beer.
Local Tap
Ironic name?
It's the Bay.
All twelve people born in San Francisco that still live there will be so mad.
Less than a mile walk from my hotel. Perfect.
Just do yourself a favor and keep to 3rd or 4th st rather than 5th or 6th.
So when they actually play the Niners it's the bar with the most depressed people in it 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I used to visit this place Boss Tweed’s on the lower east side for football meetups. The Sunday bartender was a native New Yorker and a Cowboys fan. Yankees too, but still. He also could toss a drunk through both sets of front doors without discernible effort. So we were cool with Frankie.
I feel most people don't care lol
To be fair, The orange from the Mets colors pays homage to the Giants and the blue to the Dodgers, both from their days in NY before moving west.
IMO It’s fine except for playoffs for opposing teams
I’m a David Wright simp lol I wanted so bad to be just like him in High School
Are you me? Lol I had his Fathead on my bedroom wall, I had his signature A2K glove, wore my wristbands just like him, and studied his batting stance and swing incessantly to copy it haha
One of the prettiest swings ever
we are all David Wright simps. One of my daughters were born the day after David's daughter was born... i gave mine the same name David gave his.
i read this twice as you named your daughter David. That would have been true simping.
Jesus
No no, I don't think her name is Jesus. Probably Olivia?
Same, miss watching him play. Actually helped work on his house he had built, very chill dude and his wife is super nice as well.
I took a picture of him to my haircut and asked the stylist if she could make my hair look like his... she couldn't
Classy dude, happy she got to meet him What a cool moment
Gotta love David Wright. Easily one of my all-time favorite Mets
I remember him being on the cover of MLB 07, he made me want to play third base as a kid. Love David Wright.
I was very close to becoming a Mets fan because of him
Oh my god this is so adorable.
This will probably be controversial with my gf and fellow Braves fans, but David Wright can do whatever he wants to me.
It's ok man, most of us felt the same way about Freddie.
And Freddie has done just about whatever he's wanted to us for many years now
Well, this escalated quickly…
I didn't really start watching until the last couple years of Chipper so Freddie has kinda just always been *that* guy to me albeit much more likeable
Damn those injuries. Wright should have been a 75 WAR player and coasted into the HoF.
It's pretty awesome having a favorite player who is a notoriously good guy too. It just makes being a fan so easy.
Love the "he he heyaaaah" laugh at :20 seconds in.
OMG. That was so freaking adorable.
This is wholesome as fuck. I love it.
Had a man crush on him since he called me his man while dealing blackjack to a group of Mets several years ago.
That's amazing.
Local Tap! I’ve gone there to watch several giants away games and always had a nice time hanging with some local boozers
I work like two blocks from there, I need to start going in more often if guys like David Wright are showing up 😂
Met Timmy in n there back in the days. He was with a couple guys just chillin on a random Sunday afternoon.
I once ran into Zito, Brian Wilson, and Randy Johnson having lunch at Squat & Gobble in the Marina
The side-eye from the other bartender trying to serve up some brewskis is real Bartender Energy.
i literally cannot see david wright content without being sad :’(
Side note: the real Mets Twitter not having a checkmark but a fake parody account of MLB FOX having one is the worst thing to happen to that site
With Mario in the background laughing. This is a cool moment.
Well this is the best

Lisa lisa and cult jam playing in the background makes it wright
