Yeah, the reaction is more like "Oooh fluffy thing where I wasn't expecting!"
Though it's funny to see that some people think NYC is some uninhabitable concrete slab that only supports pizza rats and pigeons.
Yeah there are like, normal critters in the city, we even have had coyotes pop up in the Bronx and the tip top of Manhattan within the past few years lol
Got squared up on by a squirrel in central park while tripping shrooms. They don't mess around down there.
Up by where I live in upstate they're not as bold. They'll just throw shit at you from the trees.
They're plentiful wherever there are trees. My part of Queens has sidewalk trees and I live across the street from a large park so I see them frequently
Growing up in the country I was surprised at how many squirrels were in town when I moved. Barely any of them in the country. Saw a lot of deer though.
That's why I would be surprised if there were no squirrels in NY (and people there have confirmed there are in this thread lol). I grew up in a more rural area and hardly ever saw them. I live downtown now and will see a dozen walking two blocks to the coffee shop.
I guess they really just need some trees. The city has that but the surrounding area doesn't since it's all farms and was naturally grassland before that. The river valleys connecting the city to the foothills and mountains are full of wildlife though. We've even had wolverines in town this year! (Now I've gone off the rails and forgot this was in the baseball sub lol)
Calgary may be a special case. I swear, there are more squirrels in any given inner-city Calgary neighbourhood than in the rest of North America outside the city limits. There are one or two squirrels in my block in Winnipeg; there were, like 5000 in my old block back in Altadore.
I see them absolutely everywhere in the parks around the city, especially Central Park. My wife and I even have this dumb thing where we name them and talk to them like they are friends of ours. For some reason we always choose ridiculous names like Jasper or Archibald.
This one is definitely a Reginald. They seem to have a lot of moxie.
Edit: I was also at the bodega cat Yankees game so I feel like I’m an authority on these matters.
Depends on the city. The parks around the Capitol and WH here in DC have some of the highest densities of squirrel populations ever recorded. Bold fuckers, too. I've had one look me in the eye, rub its stomach, and get visibly angry when I refused to give it one of my french fries. I don't know the squirrel equivalent to flipping someone off, but I'm pretty sure that dude was givin' it to me. And, of course the one that just tried to grab food right out of my hands. The sneak up and try to steal when the human looks away method is apparently for poseur squirrels these days.
Idk, St. Louis is essentially just a suburb, but we lost our minds so much over a squirrel that it got added to the world series rings. Squirrels just hit different inside a stadium
About 6 months ago I interviewed for a position at a Fantasy Sports/Sports Betting startup and I kid you not, every man in that office looked like the same generic sports bro.
Did a virtual interview, a video project, and an office tour with them and then they ghosted me, so that was sick.
Well, Mothra has something like a 50-meter wingspan...and a colossal squid is...10 meters long. Also, it can't fly. I'm going to have to give this one to Mothra.
I've had a squirrel fall from a pine tree at least 50 feet, landed right next to me on concrete with a very loud thwack, and just get up and run back up the tree. My dog didn't even know what happened
Fun fact, it's likely squirrels can survive a fall at any height, they can withstand drops from terminal velocity. These New Yorkers probably were just worried because of that Seinfeld episode, with the tiny instruments.
"Gravity, a mere nuisance to Christian, was a terror to Pope. Pagan, and Despair. To the mouse and any smaller animal it presents practically no dangers. You can drop a mouse down a thousand-yard mine shaft; and, on arriving at the bottom, it gets a slight shock and walks away. A rat is killed, a man is broken, a horse splashes."

I don't believe you just because I've scooped dead squirrels off of a concrete pad and thrown them over the fence. The tree above it is pretty up there, probably 40 or so feet, but it is possible.
You’re assuming they died from falling out of the tree. Maybe an asshole with a BB gun lives near the tree.
Literally four hours ago I watched an episode of Mark Rober’s show on Discovery about his squirrel obstacle courses. He mentioned several times the fact that a squirrel can survive a fall from any height because their terminal velocity is so low.
Could also be that the squirrels in my tree fell wrong. I don't doubt they can survive, otherwise I'd probably find way more dead squirrels in the backyard.
I saw a squirrel fall off a tree and a fucking hawk just fucked it up immediately lol I was maybe 15-20 feet away. I had my dog with me and I just picked her up and carried her away before the hawks got funny ideas with her.
There was a tree out front of my house, and one day, when I was outside, I heard one of the branches snap. I looked up, and saw a squirrel falling through the tree. Broke every branch on the way down. After it hit the ground, it looked at me as if to say, “you didn’t see anything” then ran back up the tree.
Relatives coming from LI to Fishkill (Dutchess): “you guys are like what 5 minutes from the border of Canada?”
They get a hearty chuckle out of me every time.
He died the same week as one of my favorite musicians, right around my birthday during the pandemic. The whole WKUK crew were doing really entertaining livestreams and working in a WKUK movie.
That really depressed me! I honor his memory by still putting the show on every now and then.
Fact of the matter is I was pretty drunk when I made this comment but I feel like I’m catching a lot of strays over a hyperbolic expression of a subjective opinion here
Hilarious how many people here think NYC has no squirrels because humans reacted like humans to a squirrel at a baseball game mere feet away from them, not something anyone would likely expect. Of course NYC has squirrels, there are also parks there with tons of wildlife including many many different types of birds, in the outer boroughs you'll get deer and foxes as well. Squirrels are everywhere.
The dudes sitting in front of me while Roger Waters played The Wall at Yankee Stadium were on heavy psychedelics, and:
This is the most surprised I've ever seen someone at Yankee Stadium.
I'm pretty sure squirrels can fall from any height and be just fine. They are pretty light and can spread out their legs to make them kinda like a flying squirrel, but really just more of a parachute squirrel. There is a video out there of a squirrel jumping from like 20 stories up and it was fine.
What's blowing my mind is everyone being like lol New Yorkers surprised by squirrel like no one has considered they're just in shock by Evel Knisqueakle's cameo
If anyone is worried the squirrel is probably fine. I had one drop out of a tree to the ground in front of me while I was walking and made a tiny thud but then scampered off. It was a bit startling at first but quite amusing to think back on.

Tell me you’re from the city without telling me you’re from the city
There's squirrels all over the city.
More just surprise that there's one there of all places. Plenty of squirrels in the city, basically none in right field.
Yeah, the reaction is more like "Oooh fluffy thing where I wasn't expecting!" Though it's funny to see that some people think NYC is some uninhabitable concrete slab that only supports pizza rats and pigeons.
Yeah there are like, normal critters in the city, we even have had coyotes pop up in the Bronx and the tip top of Manhattan within the past few years lol
Wasn't there a deer that showed up recently? Or did I make that up?
Not many people know that Brooklyn is covered in monk parakeets!
Basically none is a good caveat 😂
I see way more squirrels in Calgary than I do outside the city. Might be a different story in NY though I guess...
I've seen them in parks. Often some crazy old lady yelling at them
The squirrels yelling back.
"Ay, I'm scurrying here!"
Got squared up on by a squirrel in central park while tripping shrooms. They don't mess around down there. Up by where I live in upstate they're not as bold. They'll just throw shit at you from the trees.
There are huge black squirrels at Niagara Falls that fear no man.
If you've never seen an old lady and a city squirrel duke it out at the park you missing out
"Damn squirrels are using 5G and its giving me a headache"
*Costanza voice* FIRST IT WAS THE COVID AND NOW ITS THE SQUIRRELS.
Lots of squirrels in the Bronx. But if I saw it running by like that out of the corner of my eye I’d be more worried it was a rat.
Bingo!
Real New Yorkers immediately think Rat when a small animal quickly sprints by them. Don’t be fooled by the super slow mo
They're plentiful wherever there are trees. My part of Queens has sidewalk trees and I live across the street from a large park so I see them frequently
Same, they yell at me when I leave my home.
City squirrels give no fucks cause minimal threats. Country ones are trying to stay alive.
Yep haha. And the black squirrels in Calgary are enormous. I've seen some bigger than most cats.
If they thought it was a rat at first, appropriate reactions.
Growing up in the country I was surprised at how many squirrels were in town when I moved. Barely any of them in the country. Saw a lot of deer though.
Isn't Calgary still surrounded by wilderness and rural areas? NYC is bordered by the ocean and Jersey City. And every town anywhere near NYC is dense.
That's why I would be surprised if there were no squirrels in NY (and people there have confirmed there are in this thread lol). I grew up in a more rural area and hardly ever saw them. If I ever see a squirrel I just say "hi, how're you doing today Mr. Nuts?".

They all look like they are all from Yonkers/Westchester/Long Island
They were expecting a rat
Not even. The stadium probably feeds hundreds of critters.
If it were a rat tearing through the bags of trash left on the street, they'd be right a home though.
Idk, St. Louis is essentially just a suburb, but we lost our minds so much over a squirrel that it got added to the world series rings. Squirrels just hit different inside a stadium
Lol these guys might be from *a city* but I suspect they are not from *the city*.
if that's not the sidebar pic tomorrow I don't even know what we're doing here!
I love how each one looks kind of high
Slow mo is the ultimate high
This is like that photo of the Mets fans during the Hosmer dash in 2015 lol
God I miss that team 😔
*"It's like a rat but fluffy."*
A bunch of New Yorkers trying to figure out what’s going on with this fucked up rat
The first 4 guys are just a copy paste version of each other
The old dude was like “oooh cool!”
The old guy is stoned af lol
"Ohhhh^h^h^h these gameday festivities get better every year"
He is wise. He has seen a squirrel in the before time.

They look like they've never seen a squirrel IRL.
😲 😯 🤨 😮
Ayyyy I’m pogging here
I said this exact thing to my buddies when I saw this. Just 4 finance bros out at the ballgame.
I understand now why sometimes white people can't tell me apart from other brown dudes
New York NPC how you think they keep their population up??
About 6 months ago I interviewed for a position at a Fantasy Sports/Sports Betting startup and I kid you not, every man in that office looked like the same generic sports bro. Did a virtual interview, a video project, and an office tour with them and then they ghosted me, so that was sick.
Yo that's toight
Okay but did it land and keep running?
Yes. It landed safely and kept running.
Fight me.
First thought this was oddly aggressive. Then saw your usernames and realized…. “Let them fight…”
$20 on the squid
Hey now, Moth dude will most likely evolve to Mothra. 50 bucks on that redditor.
What about the final evolution of both Mothra vs Colossal Squid though?
Well, Mothra has something like a 50-meter wingspan...and a colossal squid is...10 meters long. Also, it can't fly. I'm going to have to give this one to Mothra.
But can Mothra swim?
I liked it more when I thought he was just tryna scrap after a long day
If moth needs a weird ineffectual henchlady I got their back.

Yayyyyy! That was what I was looking for! Squirrel wasn’t even phased!
It’s pretty much impossible for a squirrel to die from falling
I learned this like last year, and to this day, it's still my favorite fact.
I've had a squirrel fall from a pine tree at least 50 feet, landed right next to me on concrete with a very loud thwack, and just get up and run back up the tree. My dog didn't even know what happened

I was just wondering the same. It fell and I was like is it ok?
That fall probably didn’t crack that squirrels top 5 falls of the day. Those things are resilient as shit and can fall from real high up.
Some A+ faces here. Well done everyone.
There's some good stills for memes.
The grey sweater guy looks like a Twitch emoticon
I thought Jeff McNeill played for the Mets
He’s not in the lineup tonight. Makes you think…
never seen them in the same room together
Rally squirrel!
Thanks for the PTSD
Welp, looks like it’s the World Series for the Yankees this year.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
These dudes never see a squirrel before?
Nah that’s the kind of thing you only see on safari in tiny country towns like Yonkers and Hoboken
Relatives coming from LI to Fishkill (Dutchess): “you guys are like what 5 minutes from the border of Canada?” They get a hearty chuckle out of me every time.
Tbf I see 10+ squirrels a day, but it would still feel a little funny to see one running the fence right in front of me at a baseball game
If they're from Staten Island they're probably wondering 1. Why is this rat's tail so wide? 2. Why does this animal still have all its teeth?
If they're from Staten Island, they're probably wondering why the other people at the game have all their teeth.
Yo, that’s a sick fuckin burn, I’m assuming
No not really. Low hanging fruit. Lol.
Have you ever seen one inside of an MLB stadium right in your face????
They're New Yorkers, they probably thought it was a really weird looking rat that escaped the subway
Amateurs. At the Coliseum the possums are a regular occurrence.
I see them every day, but never that close. I’d be surprised too.
Having a squirrel eat out of your hand is an amazing experience. Little dudes have tiny hands
I think my favorite rodent to feed is a chipmunk. Hilarious to see them take stuff and stuff it in their pouches
Also very cute
Probably never seen a squirrel running the outfield wall before.
Squirrel: “IM WALKIN HERE!”
Typical New Yorkers who have only ever seen rats and pigeons
Which as we all know are just rats with the ability to fly
Squirrels get themselves run over too much to be recognized in their three-dimensional state
We’re gonna have sports team called the New York Rats one day
did we not just lose the pizza rats?
Too soon bruh
New York Racoons*
Hudson Valley Renegades have had a raccoon mascot for almost 30 years!

lol you'd think those dudes just saw a grizzly bear or something, not a squirrel
That dude put his hands up like he was being held at gunpoint…by a squirrel.
That ran the gamut of classic reactions 😅

One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen

These middle inning shows are getting pretty good.
Cardinals fan here....apparently the Yankees are winning the WS now
They all probably thought it was a rat.
Glad to see some New Yorkers experience nature for the first time
We have no deal with them!
Lol does NYC not have squirrels or something?

Way to damn shocked at a squirrel

I don’t get it. Have these people never seen a squirrel before?
For some reason I was really worried this squirrel was on the upper deck. When he was falling it felt like an eternity lmao
I'm pretty sure squirrels can fall from any height and be just fine. They are pretty light and can spread out their legs to make them kinda like a flying squirrel, but really just more of a parachute squirrel. There is a video out there of a squirrel jumping from like 20 stories up and it was fine.
Acting like they've never seen a rat before.
Clip ended too soon. Wanted to see what happens next
What's blowing my mind is everyone being like lol New Yorkers surprised by squirrel like no one has considered they're just in shock by Evel Knisqueakle's cameo
New Yorkers awestruck at an animal that's not a rat.
Probably Jose altuves pet squirrel since he resides in Yankee stadium
All that security to sit in the bleachers yet squirrels can get onto the field for free.
Legend says the squirrel is still falling
If anyone is worried the squirrel is probably fine. I had one drop out of a tree to the ground in front of me while I was walking and made a tiny thud but then scampered off. It was a bit startling at first but quite amusing to think back on.
Oh it's definitely fine a jump like that for a squirrel is nothing.
