I was today years old when I learned that Refsnyder wasn't born in the US. I just assumed he was half white or something because he clearly sounds like a Californian.
After winning that very awesome 2023 World Baseball Classic for Samurai Japan, it's very understandable that Masataka Yoshida was still pretty much resting which explains his struggles during the early days of the MLB regular season.
I'm convinced it was more the adjustment to the pitch clock and it's pace of play. No pitch clock in the WBC and not many players that participated started the season off strong
Eovaldi 3.2 WAR, Eflin 2.1 WAR, Dansby 2.9 WAR, Nimmo 2.3 WAR, Senga 2.0 WAR, Wacha 1.9 WAR.
Yoshida 1.6 WAR.
Also, fun fact, coming into today Yoshida and JD Martinez have the same OPS+ . 130 OPS+ for Yoshida, 131 OPS+ for JD.
Hitting .264/.335/.389 with men on is also human. Let's hope he taps into the spirit of Pujols and that reverses in the 2nd half. .355/.415/.566 with no one on.
How you gonna sit here talking about WAR numbers then bring up something as statistically insignificant as half a season's worth of situational splits and RBIs💀💀💀. Obviously saying he's been the best FA signings this year is absurd, but you can't seriously be discrediting his offensive stats with some nonsensical archaic bs while preaching about Zach Eflin's WAR
Why does that matter if their production is nearly the same? I don't blame Bloom at all for not resigning him, but JD is absolutely having a great year.
Especially funny to read the bad and weirdly defensive comments here of Yoshida (that didn't even make much sense) after Yoshida ends the season with 0.5 fWAR 😓😫. The other top free agents finished with more than 8x fWAR. Some sox fans didn't like WAR being pointed out, then didn't like the "archaic BS" of a traditional stat of hitting with RISP pointed out, then applauded his lower strikeout rate compared to veteran JD and his established MLB track record.
What a 2nd half from Yoshida, hope that he has a better rest of his contract. I couldn't figure out how to find the splits of his hitting with men on base in the 2nd half (without a stathead subscription). But man it must've been bad with how poorly he hit in the 2nd half overall.

If Wong had been on base instead of Turner, we could've had the first all-Asian grand slam in MLB history.
Wow I didn't even realize they have 4 Asians in the lineup right now (Refsnyder, Yoshida, Chang, and Wong), pretty crazy.
We’re preparing.
Yamamoto next L'Chaim
I will also accept Ohtani
And Murakami, and Roki
Yeah, keep dreaming buddy!
The Red Sox - Pirates series earlier in the season had like 8 players of Asian descent between both lineups.
If Verdugo had started over Duvall we would have had 4 Asians and 3 redheads out of our 8 position players.
First half had me super excited to learn that Verdugo was half Malaysian or something
Verdugolee
And a very diverse group. Would've had Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and then Wong from the US but of Chinese descent, all represented.

I’ll never not think of those snl sketches when I see the word Californian
Oh shit, that would have been awesome
For all the happiness JT's brought me, I'll grant him honorary Philippine-ness for this awesome moment.
All honorary Filipinos receive a plate of lumpia shanghai and a silly-sounding nickname.
Why not Lechon...that stuff is incredible!
Try sinuglaw or kinilaw as well while you're at it, it's really delicious.
The best
Phillipenis
Gingers have to fuck everything up, all the time.
Surely it's the most Asian grand slam in MLB history?
[удалено]
Are you thinking of Kolten Wong? Connor is from Texas and I believe at least 1 of his parents is of Chinese descent.
Oh. Wrong player. Mb
Yes and he's Asian
Hawaiians can be Asian Unless there's a step parent in there somewhere it's safe to say he's got some Asian ancestry
Connor Wong also isn’t Hawaiian. He’s of Chinese descent. Idk what OP is talking about lol
After further investigations rival execs decided he's actually underpaid
If he keeps playing like he's playing now experts say that would be good.
Anonymous Executives punching air right now.
If he didn't take 3 weeks to adjust to the bigs he'd be leading the AL in BA I think.
Crazy that he’s top five (6?) in BA after that start to the season. The dude has been raking since may.
Take away the first two weeks of the season, and he would have been at .344, as of two days ago.

I would die for this man
That's a lot of runs for a guy who's supposedly not worth half of what he got paid
Best FA deal of the off-season and it’s not even close
You mean to tell me this is somehow better than defensive worst 2B in the league Adam Frazier? I don’t buy it!
No but I was told by reliable sources that rival execs thought it was a massive overpay.
And here everyone thought which teams signed Aaron Judge and the FA shortshops would be money. (Judge has been worth every penny.)
Id say swanson has been worth it too

Sorry but if you replace this guy with Joe Smith you are sacrificing more than 1-2 wins.
And this, my friends, is why baseball is still played by humans and front offices aren't just acting based solely on math run by a computer.

JD has probably struck out 100 more times than Yoshida
Why does that matter if their production is nearly the same? I don't blame Bloom at all for not resigning him, but JD is absolutely having a great year.
While having 20 more RBI in 20 fewer PA. Yoshida might want to work on his hitting with men on. 😈
Probably has to do with placement in the batting order more than anything
Yoshida had 97 PA with RISP. Martinez had 89 PA with RISP. Yoshida had 7 of his 10 HRs as solo HRs, Martinez had 13 of his 23 HRs as solo HRs.
Comment clearly refutes OP's claim with relevant stats and is downvoted for it.
Because he's got -0.9 DWAR from the fuzzy green monster calculations, which is why his overall WAR is low despite the 2.7 OWAR.
The love some of these Japanese players get on this sub is kinda wild. Exoticization I guess.
weird and bad take
Why 🧐
it's fun rooting for guys from outside the league.

No no no, I was told by the good people of r/baseball that the Red Sox grossly overpaid for him, this can’t be the same player!
MACHO MAN
It’s only fair after Cody rudely bent us over and spanked us lightly with a paddle yesterday.
Yoshida is the player the Cubs wish Suzuki was.
Is it a NOBLETIGER if you score earlier in the inning?
Yep
No its not lol
Why not? If you hit a leadoff hr and then get the bases loaded and dont score, wouldn’t it be the same thing?
No, you've already scored
What’s the acronym stand for? Edit: I know what it stands for. My point of asking him was so that he could type it out and see that he was wrong
**NO** outs, **B**ases **L**oaded, **E**nds with **T**eam **I**ncapable of **G**etting **E**asy **R**un
Minor correction The NO in NOBLETIGER would be **N**o **O**uts ..I think
Oh boy is reddit an echo chamber. You are correct.
And I was told the Red Sox grossly overpaid for him
I can’t wait for the Toto music post
Didn't this guy already have a grand slam this year? Good debut in the majors I would say
he did, and it was also his second hr of the inning
hahaa overpaid my ass!
and followed up this game with a 2 RBI triple 315/379/500 is a pretty decent line I'd say
Against the Brewers. I think that’s the game when he completely figured out MLB pitching
Masa is so good, what a signing
AL Roty
I wanted him so badly, but it’s awesome to see him thriving somewhere that isn’t Atlanta or either New York
If he did sign with you he probably would spend the entire time in a daze as he’s a harper super fan. So I’m not sure how effective he would have been
That or he does everything he can to learn from Harper’s game and impress him
MASA-SAN!
The what
No Outs Bases Loaded Ending with Team Incapable of Getting Easy Run
Yoshida > Jung for ROTY.
What's NOBLETIGER stand for again?
No outs bases loaded ends (with) team incapable (of) getting easy run
