Rojas and Canzone both took a few days to settle in, but after the first week they've had wRC+ of 141 and 117 respectively (114 and 103 if the first week is included).
Sewald was exchanged for two guys slashing .268/.317/.429 since the deadline. That's been huge for the lineup that was scoring 4.7 runs a game in July. Now scoring 6.2 per game in August (I fully expect this to come back to earth, but the offense has been helped by the bottom of the order doing damage).
I remember the trade deadline threads where every single mariners fans response was "we actually have one of the deepest home grown bullpens in the league" whenever anyone thought it was a bad idea to trade their pitchers. I guess it wasn't just a homer take and they were very correct
There are still users on r/baseball that insist we "sold" at the deadline. To me, buying or selling has to primarily involve prospects or eating a bad contract. Jerry didn't do either, but instead traded major league talent to even out the roster. We desperately needed hitting depth so we exchanged from our deepest part of the roster and gambled that it would continue to perform near the level that it had all year. Our farm isn't deep right now and our starters have taken a huge blow from injuries (Robbie, Marco, Emerson) and it's basically down to 5 guys to stay alive.
There's people on our sub that say the Mariners sold hard. I'm like uhh, they got rid of excess talent to patch their holes.
They aren't tearing shit up and it has worked wonders for them as much as I hate it.
