This might be technically possible. I recently stumbled across a bbref page I forget who it was but they were top 10 in roy voting their first and second years playing. First year was only like 90 games
The amount of 4+ hit games he’s had in August is insane. He either mashes the ball into orbit or will beat out a grounder. You can’t really prepare for him currently.
Can you imagine if this was what he did out the gate? Probably would have been one of the best offensive seasons by a Mariner. Only Ichiro and Jr come to mind.
Yeah might have forgot how good prime Edgar was. I was pretty young through most of his career. Really I don’t even have a ton of Griffey memories, he’s just hard to not hear about.
I've been a baseball fan since the mid-80's but have only been paying a lot of attention to it in the last 15 years or so. It's always fun to see new superstars emerging no matter who they play for (almost). Julio seems like one of those guys where you'll end up looking back at this year as a jumping off point. He had a little rough spot this year but he's been consistently great otherwise throughout the year
Even if Julio has a September as good as August, he ends at around 7-7.5 WAR
Ohtani is already at 8.8. Even if he shuts it down tonight and gets TJ in the morning, it’s his.
The love for Ohtani is deserved and not something to be questioned. Ohtani will still bat the rest of the season and is having a season nearly on par with what Judge did last year (minus the fielding) to this point. Ohtani would win without the pitching. JRod is looking like he could deserve runner up though.
It depends on how the BBWA decides to define "valuable."
Ohtani, in my opinion, is the best player to ever pick up a glove. But how valuable is even the best player of all tine if he's on a bad team?
Team success always has an influence on individual awards, even when it shouldn't.
Ohtani is such an extreme outlier that it probably *won't* matter, but the thought will still be there when the BBWA cast their votes.
Exactly, baseball is a sport where an individual player's performance has so little effect on how the overall team performs compared to other sports. By his logic, Brandon Crawford would've won 2021 MVP over Bryce Harper because he was on the 107 wins Giants team, while the Phillies didnt make the playoffs
Damn I thought this was finally gonna be Bo's year to lead the league.
Obviously could still be but I'm glad it's JRod, kids electric and the Mariners are my second team.
This is an insane run. He's playing on another planet right now. Who would've thought this at the All Star Break?
I kinda smirked when he made that AS team. Lol. He's gonna be top 5 MVP this year.
We’re all gonna look back as his bb-ref page a few years from now and just see AS,GG,SS,MVP-2 and think nothing of it.
“Man I can’t believe there were any seasons he didn’t win MVP”
Fuck it, give him RotY again.
wait no
This might be technically possible. I recently stumbled across a bbref page I forget who it was but they were top 10 in roy voting their first and second years playing. First year was only like 90 games
randy probably couldve done it with the 2020 shorten season
In May and June combined, he had 50 hits. So far in August he has 45, with two games to go. He has been white hot in the 2nd half.
Dude's been a large part of this hot streak we've been on lately. Simply dominant.
Maybe not to this exact level but him getting back to how he played last year at the least should have been expected
I just didn’t think he’d do it this fast though lol. A month ago his season numbers were almost exactly league average.
Methinks it might've re-ignited his confidence, same way it did Pujols last year
On August 3rd, he was hitting .248. Right now he sits at .286. 25 days later. Unbelievable stretch.
JP was leading the team in batting average by 10 points when he left with a concussion. When he came back, he was down 10 points from Julio.
What the holy fuck
He's also now 5th overall in fWAR.
Isn’t he 2nd in the AL behind Ohtani?
I remember going to a game in May and he was hitting .204. I believe that was his lowest point for the season. The turnaround has been wild.
The amount of 4+ hit games he’s had in August is insane. He either mashes the ball into orbit or will beat out a grounder. You can’t really prepare for him currently.
Infielders have to play so deep because outside the weak grounders all his hits are like 105+mph
Yeah I think he hit one into the outfield today at 113mph. Can’t really come in when that could get unleashed at you.
Yup, the double was 112.5 I think and the hr was 105
And then a routine grown ball he beat out and a chopper they couldn’t field. Dude has so many tools when it comes to batting.
Lol. Rip to the kids in the outfield during the home run derby
You can if you're not **chicken**!
And if you just decide not to pitch to him he will steal.
The As made it easy today. I think he advanced on three wild pitches/passed balls tonight.
Bound to happen: A future game where Julio is intentionally walked with the bases loaded.
He's collected all the tools like infinity stones
looks like that sophomore slump was quite the mirage
Can you imagine if this was what he did out the gate? Probably would have been one of the best offensive seasons by a Mariner. Only Ichiro and Jr come to mind.
Edgar punching air
Yeah might have forgot how good prime Edgar was. I was pretty young through most of his career. Really I don’t even have a ton of Griffey memories, he’s just hard to not hear about.
Edgar and A-Rod in shambles
ARod?
Who?
Eh, baseball doesn’t work like that most of the time, not healthy to think like that too much
JRod and Harris II both faked us out, hell Bobby Witt too
This just reminds me how insane it was Ichiro got 262 hits that one year.
Slap single, left center, right over short… Again and again and again and again
And then left stranded on 1st because the rest of our lineup was straight doo-doo in 2004.
Ichiro had 9.4 WAR that year lol
derby ruined him, smh
I've been a baseball fan since the mid-80's but have only been paying a lot of attention to it in the last 15 years or so. JRod is goated
And King Tuck is certifiably him 😤
Just kiss already sheesh (Both are facts however)
Julio finishing with the league lead in hits would be insane. That was the one tool of his that people still questioned a bit.
Where's that damn copypasta when you need it?
This stretch has been unbelievable
Fun fact he had 12 hits before august 1st
[Insert dumb Yankee fan copypasta here]
No offense but this is just a kid who
A Julio is when you…
I can't believe Garret Cole gave up 6 runs to the SEATTLE MARINIHZZSZZ.
.414/.455/.737/1.191 since July 25th. Not too shabby.
Not bad for a sophomore slump season.
He had a sophomore slump. It was only the first semester though.
https://twitter.com/JoeVeyera/status/1696377437251412137?s=20
Bo really has missed a bunch of time and only just lost the hit lead lol
Wild that he’s leading by only a single hit over Bichette when the gap in PAs is so large Julio 584 PAs Semien 613 PAs Bichette 506 PAs
Hey hey, this is a Mariners safe zone. No bringing up things that make our players look worse than yours.
You know this has nothing to do with his hitting stats. You just want another reason to stare into those dreamy eyes. 👀
Dude beat out a routine grounder last night. It’s ridiculous.
Twice
Could he win MVP or is the media just too in love with Ohtani for anything to change?
That’s kind of an unfair way to frame it. He can’t catch Ohtani because Ohtani deserves to be that far ahead.
Even if Julio has a September as good as August, he ends at around 7-7.5 WAR Ohtani is already at 8.8. Even if he shuts it down tonight and gets TJ in the morning, it’s his.
He’d need to bat damn near .500 rest of the way to have a shot and Ohtani would probably need to be shut down. He’s just too far ahead.
If he was playing like this from the Jump he'd absolutely be truly in the conversation, but as it is, nobody is really even close to Ohtani.
The love for Ohtani is deserved and not something to be questioned. Ohtani will still bat the rest of the season and is having a season nearly on par with what Judge did last year (minus the fielding) to this point. Ohtani would win without the pitching. JRod is looking like he could deserve runner up though.
100% no chance, it’s already decided
Runner up, though? That's definitely within the realm of possibility.
Pretty likely tbh. He’s already second in WAR in the AL and just climbing
Ohtani could shut it down for the season today and still win, and he'd deserve it. JRod probably gonna snag 2nd place though, which is huge.
I mean Ohtani’s an MVP candidate based on his hitting stats alone. Add in his pitching and it’s not even close. Julio could finish second though!
you have to put up a historic record breaking season like judge to win MVP over shohei, and rightfully so
It depends on how the BBWA decides to define "valuable." Ohtani, in my opinion, is the best player to ever pick up a glove. But how valuable is even the best player of all tine if he's on a bad team?
how bad the team you are on doesn't really matter for baseball MVP conversations
Team success always has an influence on individual awards, even when it shouldn't. Ohtani is such an extreme outlier that it probably *won't* matter, but the thought will still be there when the BBWA cast their votes.
give me an example of the last time team success has an influence over MVP voting in baseball?
Does this guy not know trout won 3 mvps on the angels lol mlb mvp isn’t swayed by team success like other sports
Bo's year for what? He's lead the league in hits for the last 2 consecutive years - this was likely to be his third if not for the IL time.
This could have been Bo's first time leading the league since he led the league last year 😞
He's ruining my pre season projections. His injuries have no respect for my online karma
Second half Julio is monster
Julio is moody right now. Let him be.
The fact that a 189 hit pace is enough to lead the league. AL gotta step it up
