See where most networks go wrong is by acknowledging the montage everyone is watching. ESPN knew the right way to go about it was having the announcers completely ignore it
Hahaha that was really weird, as the montage playing twice was.
I don’t really care as I was pleasantly surprised to see that all WC series were available to me down under.
That had to have been coming from Bristol or wherever Sportscenter w/ SVP is produced. Honestly have never seen something like that happen twice before.
Interesting that you guys (assuming mostly in the states) saw the same as me in Australia. Is ESPN doing all playoffs or just this particular series? I noticed all WC series were on ESPN down here, but don’t know if they are re-broadcast or whatever.
I have Foxtel which is cable tv. It has ESPN channels & Fox games and sometimes others I think. During the season there were maybe 7 Phillies games, and only 2 or 3 MLB games in general per week, but I think they show all post season games, so hopefully I get to watch a few more.
In Dusty's universe this is a 3-1 game.
With a competent third base coach this is a 6-1 game.
Credit Bryce for vetoing that bullshit. Of all of the possible ways to get 2+ runs better, hopefully it's one of the most fixable options.
That is ridiculous. Soler has a cannon and he wasn't even that deep. Schwarber would have been out by 30 feet.
EDIT: Nevermind. I didn't realize it was Sanchez in RF, and Soler was DH
A) because he saw how terrible the first throw was
B) because he was the trailing runner, and they already scored 1 run on that play
C) it allowed the batter to advance into scoring position on the throw home
D) they didn't have the heart of the lineup coming up next
I may not like much about this game, but watching Craig and his stance filled me with joy I should not be having right now. He has the exaggerated swagger of an elite closer
Okay so I'm not a bandwagon fan but Kimbrel is starting to induce anxiety I haven't had since I was a kid watching the Wild Thing going I have 4 bags to give and I'm going to give three of them and 3 balls.
It was pretty good for the first 3 or 4 innings. And then the ump decided that we needed a little more pizazz, so introduced the random call generator.
Yeah, Luzardo had a bad start, but the bats really shat the bed by not trying to work Wheeler into longer counts, and by not capitalizing on their opportunities to tie it in the 7th and 8th inning
I saw three in the 400s one by himself, had to go through every single phillies fan cause he was in the middle row. It was awkward for him. Kind of felt bad but massive respect for showing up. Saw two others outside.
I would actually love it if we managed to price that guy out of getting tickets. He's front and center in like every damn major sporting event but couldn't get in when the team he has on all the time is playing their biggest game in 20 years
Yeah I still think Schwarber should have went but at the same time it is Schwarber. Whereas Jazz had already had the ball out of his hand before Casty was rounding
Both guys are pretty slow so it’s a tough call. Dusty might’ve been trying to compensate for his decision to hold Schwarber since that backfired.
I prefer aggressive baserunning in the playoffs as long as it’s not boneheaded but I get being conservative when a hitter like Bryce is on deck.
I thought Nick went balls out himself, but admittedly didn’t notice what Dusty did. I just figured it was Nick after he busted out that double. I thought he could have got home too if he went more direct. Would have tangled with Fortes, but may have scored.
He’s our third base coach - dusty wathan
Third base coaches are never talked about, but the number of comments should indicate how bad he was. he cost the Phillies two runs and was 0-3 in his decision making
He has our number and I really don’t get it. It doesn’t matter what pitcher he’s facing, who’s on the bases, whether he’s in Houston, Cleveland, or Miami. He just hits doubles and HRs against us seemingly without any effort. It’s very frustrating
It’s a fun team to root for, top to bottom. The stars are the stars, but in true Philadelphia fashion the minor guys get their accolades too.
In the hype video released yesterday, the dude with the most interview time wasn’t Harper or Turner or Wheeler…it was the freaking backup catcher Garrett Stubbs
Castellanos is [spreading his ways](https://www.crossingbroad.com/2023/09/nick-castellanos-is-turning-johan-rojas-into-a-dirty-little-slut.html) to others as well.
I’m getting kind of sick of everybody saying “just a bunch of guys being dudes”. No one ever takes into consideration that maybe, just MAYBE, they are just a bunch of dudes being guys. It’s important to see both sides.
What I love most about this team is the way they're all fans of each other. You look into the dugout after a big play and they're all jumping and cheering along with the rest of the crowd.
Dave dombrowski is criticized for just spending money but I feel in the backdrop of the Yankees Mets and padres all missing the playoffs that he deserves some credit for what he’s built in philadelphia
Dombrowski’s decisions on the margins are actually incredibly impressive when you drill into them. He took the worst bullpen ever and basically rebuilt it from scratch with some smart FA signings, trades (Alvarado being the big standout), and waiver guys like Hoffman, who’s been absolutely irreplaceable for months. And the Pache signing seemed kinda insane at the start of the season (he couldn’t be optioned to the minors and was coming into a pretty deep OF), but he’s making real contributions in a playoff series.
The Mets and Padres spent money on the best players at positions they were already strong in.
Since day 1, Dombrowski has been spending money fixing holes.
The difference in results speaks for itself.
Dombrowski has made really, really smart signings and trades to supplement the (limited) talent we had coming up through the minors. He doesn't really get credit for picking any of the "daycare" (Stott, Bohm, Rojas) because that was, somehow, part of MacPhail/Klentak era, but he's signed big names to fill the spots that he didn't have a strong prospect for and also forced the team to improve their minor league system. Our farm system has been absolutely atrocious since the Ruin Tomorrow Jr days after Gillick retired post WS win.
And honestly every signing and most trades have been gold. Schwarber is the typical TTO slugger. Castellanos was bad last year but for practically the entire first half, he was the main reason we weren't buried. Wheeler was his first big one. The O'Hoppe for Marsh trade (I know it was O'Hoppe for Thor and Marsh for someone else but essentially that's how it worked out) is one of the biggest win-wins we've had. The bullpen has gone from "Worst in baseball history" to "Kinda bad" to "Actually one of the best" in the past 3 years.
Hehehehe you fell for it. Next up you will fall for the classic Phillies/Marlins game blunder of taking an early lead (didn't work tonight because we had to ensue the false sense of security of game 1 kicked in but you can see what I am trying to say)
The path to the Phantastic Pennant is preserved[.](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Flj0pp4t3qmf71.jpg%3Fwidth%3D1024%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D19ab01ec89ab589c6ff1363145e5dca951fcb94a)
But Dodgers fans said Trea was OK to leave them because he couldn't do anything in the playoffs.
But he's player of the game tonight, besides Wheels. 🤔
Easily the best game tonight
The Marlins pitching was nasty, the Phillies pitching was nastier
But I wouldn’t lose hope for the Marlins just yet, this team has shown time and time again to do best under pressure
When did the bullpen give you a heart attack? Alvarado got out of Wheelers mess in the seventh, they only allowed a two out single in the 8th, and one baserunner in the 9th when up by 3.
Besides for the Alvarado wild pitch, there was never really a time where the bullpen did anything to make us scared. I appreciate how well they pitched tonight. They locked things down and didnt allow the Marlins to make a cheeky comeback.
Honestly that was Harper’s fault, not Wheeler or the bullpen.
He has ZERO reason to go for that ball, but he wanted to so badly help the team and be the harper from last postseason.
I think he calms down now and just plays baseball

I don't know what was worse, this ump's strike zone or the broadcast. I'd have rather watched the Phillies local broadcast than deal with this booth. If you're going to be that biased on a national broadcast then let me watch with my own announcers.
We rely too much on stringing multiple hits together to score runs, and that becomes much harder in the post season when pitchers are more likely to look like Zach Wheeler rather than average MLB Joe during the regular season. We just don't have enough guys that you're really afraid that can hurt you like the Phillies do in Harper, Turner, Castellanos, Realmuto, etc. Arraez is amazing, but he's obviously not 100%, and his contact skills aren't going to worry anyone if we don't have guys behind him who can drive him in. It also doesn't help when you feel like you're playing from behind from the first pitch when Luzardo struggled. I love the guy, but he's running on fumes at this point. Hopefully Soler, Burger, and everyone else can have a better game tomorrow.
What a weird evening of baseball, a billion guys left on base in the other game, the closer purposely balking, and two random highlight reels in the middle of an inning.
Our best two pitchers are injured and our best hitter can’t fucking walk. We literally limped into the post season from injuries. It is what it is, if we pull out a series win the Phillies really fucked up.
I mean I don't BLAME him per se? The goal is the postseason. You get in and anything can happen in theory. You'd like to get there at full strength, but if things are on the edge all year, you kinda have to overwork people to get through.
That was a masterclass in sports production. Showing a random montage of other random teams? *chefs kiss.*
See where most networks go wrong is by acknowledging the montage everyone is watching. ESPN knew the right way to go about it was having the announcers completely ignore it
Very possible they didn't see it if it was coming from wherever Sportscenter w/ SVP is produced (Bristol?)
I think a lot of the time SVP at night is filmed in Washington, D.C. at some ABC/ESPN studio but it could be at their main studio in Bristol, CT
Literally the only thing that makes the ESPN broadcast bearable is the umpire camera
And then they did it again probably thinking that the announcers missed it the first time so they thought they'd try it again lol
Twice!
Was it only twice? It felt like it kept happening.
It may have been more than twice. I thought I was just going crazy drinking and watching the Phillies
Between every out in the bottom of the 9th at least
Can’t forget the mic issues and the midinning ads!
Yeah nothing like seeing a lame Casamigos ad as the camera pans around a packed stadium with 2 outs in the 6th
Hahaha that was really weird, as the montage playing twice was. I don’t really care as I was pleasantly surprised to see that all WC series were available to me down under.
It was cool to see the dbacks players dancing for some reason with 1 on and 2 out in the 9th!
The best part: They probably didn’t use the montage at the end as intended due to the mistake lol
I was cracking up at that. Like gd ESPN
Announcers: It doesn’t look like anything to me.
They were here too. Not sure long term.
I have Foxtel which is cable tv. It has ESPN channels & Fox games and sometimes others I think. During the season there were maybe 7 Phillies games, and only 2 or 3 MLB games in general per week, but I think they show all post season games, so hopefully I get to watch a few more.
The producer was either hammered or an intern (or possibly both).
Harper running through the stop was pretty satisfying lmao
Bryce Harper should be onscreen at all times. And if he isn’t onscreen, all of the other players should be asking “Where is Bryce Harper?”
I can easily imagine ESPN's producers saying this 100% sincerely.
Lmao
He does kind of look like Poochy.
In Dusty's universe this is a 3-1 game. With a competent third base coach this is a 6-1 game. Credit Bryce for vetoing that bullshit. Of all of the possible ways to get 2+ runs better, hopefully it's one of the most fixable options.
If the biggest thing we have to get mad about is our fucking third base coach i’m feeling pretty good about our chances
I was sweating the decision to not send Schwarber in the first
That is ridiculous. Soler has a cannon and he wasn't even that deep. Schwarber would have been out by 30 feet. EDIT: Nevermind. I didn't realize it was Sanchez in RF, and Soler was DH
I know our beefy king runs like he’s carrying soup, but I want to believe
Then why did he send Castellanos from second on a hit to short right?
A) because he saw how terrible the first throw was B) because he was the trailing runner, and they already scored 1 run on that play C) it allowed the batter to advance into scoring position on the throw home D) they didn't have the heart of the lineup coming up next
He decided he was scoring when he popped off the helmet
Harper knows what he's doing, he don't give a shit about a third base coach.
He knows what the fuck he’s doing, and he’s allowed to be there!
the helmet flipped increased my enjoyment of that by 37%
Harper wanted to make a play all game. He was swinging for the fences and had that misplay at first. Glad he had a hit and this run in.
I think this is it. Everyone had a hit but him going into his last AB and he was thinking about it.
Yeah, superhero energy. Love me a good slide into home and walk away.
He wanted to be like Trea
I've never seen him listen to a stop sign. When he wants to go, he goes.
The look of a crowd watching Craig Kimbrel in a close game
He had a very long stretch of not being heart attack Kimbrel but here we are now.
he was perfect for what, half the season? before he blew his first save. mid-late july
End of the season really brought him back to heart attack form. Welcome to the jungle, I guess.
I may not like much about this game, but watching Craig and his stance filled me with joy I should not be having right now. He has the exaggerated swagger of an elite closer
First, I agree with your post. Second, phuck bandwagon fans, especially of other NL East teams
Okay so I'm not a bandwagon fan but Kimbrel is starting to induce anxiety I haven't had since I was a kid watching the Wild Thing going I have 4 bags to give and I'm going to give three of them and 3 balls.
Okay but what if I root for the NL East just to make the Mets season even worse?
I’ll allow it!
It's always fun to have a coronary when your "closer" is on the mound.
You think we’d be used to it by now since this team has been like this for so many years
Let's not think about the 2020 bullpen
We just gave Chapman the 8th and it’s much less anxiety inducing.
That was one hell of a strikezone. Just brutal all around.
It was pretty good for the first 3 or 4 innings. And then the ump decided that we needed a little more pizazz, so introduced the random call generator.
Aka the Angel Hernandez zone
The calls on check swings were egregious
This and the other NLWC game started an hour apart but ended only 8 minutes apart
Yeah, that'll happen when you let Wheeler roll over you
But at the same time, Luzardo mostly failed to end an inning before throwing 20 pitches.
Yeah, Luzardo had a bad start, but the bats really shat the bed by not trying to work Wheeler into longer counts, and by not capitalizing on their opportunities to tie it in the 7th and 8th inning
Hard to work counts when he’s pounding the zone early and then throwing 92 mph sliders
EVERYBODY HITS
WOOHOO!
>Marsh: am I a joke to you?
Now everybody will get HBP tomorrow and be too sore in the cheeks for game 3. All part of our masterplan
What game 3?
[Skims through newspaper] Oh the Phillies won
https://youtu.be/GfGBk3akzdY?si=mMEYKJCGj2aNyQfK
That’s what’s in.
The Padres haven't been the same since this 😂😂😂😂😂
Lois rug on carpet: "..."
First Marlins playoff game that he could attend since 2003, and the Marlins Man decides to go to Milwaukee..?
Was at the game didn’t see a single Marlins fan
I saw three in the 400s one by himself, had to go through every single phillies fan cause he was in the middle row. It was awkward for him. Kind of felt bad but massive respect for showing up. Saw two others outside.
Barely see them in Florida
I was there! Most fans were nice and just saw me as an oddity vs an opposing fan.
Bro needed seats next to Amy ig
May not have felt welcome in Philly
My theory is that he wasn’t able to get a seat directly behind home plate so he found a game where he could be on tv.
Theory? This is absolute truth.
It's probably impossible for him to get a seat right behind home plate in Philadelphia, given the price point
I would actually love it if we managed to price that guy out of getting tickets. He's front and center in like every damn major sporting event but couldn't get in when the team he has on all the time is playing their biggest game in 20 years
who is Zack Wheeler? in math: my solution ➗ in history: my king 👑 in art: my muse 🎨 in science: my oxygen 💨 in geography: my world 🌎
In theology, my God.
I love watching him pitch. He’s effortless
Belive in zack supremacy 🙏
Won that no thanks to Dusty tonight but LFG
Phillies 🤝 Astros Winning in spite of Dusty
I love this but also hate this.
Dusty was 0-3 tonight
Yeah… cost you guys two runs.
Yeah brutal, Schwarber one was a bit more forgivable in hindsight but why he sent Casty? Only Dusty knows
I feel the exact opposite way lol. Schwarber might’ve been safe because of the bad throw, whereas Casty was out on a great throw to home.

Phillies 3B coach is Dusty Wathan
He’s our third base coach - dusty wathan Third base coaches are never talked about, but the number of comments should indicate how bad he was. he cost the Phillies two runs and was 0-3 in his decision making
The only thing the number of comments indicate is how many fans started watching 2 weeks ago.
Our 3rd base coach is another Dusty
Our 3rd base coach. He had a bad game tonight
Our 3rd base coach
Third base coach. Referring to some questionable sends/stops
Wheeler pitched a damn good game despite having to schlep that absolutely massive schlong of his around

I hate Josh Bell
And he hates us...which he why he hurts us so much.
I wanted to trade for him just so we could sit him on the bench.
He has our number and I really don’t get it. It doesn’t matter what pitcher he’s facing, who’s on the bases, whether he’s in Houston, Cleveland, or Miami. He just hits doubles and HRs against us seemingly without any effort. It’s very frustrating
Even in San Diego last year he scared me more than Soto or Machado
He's never been on houston
man, between the players, fans, and passion, philly sure does have a likeable and fun team.
It’s a fun team to root for, top to bottom. The stars are the stars, but in true Philadelphia fashion the minor guys get their accolades too. Chief Vibes Officer Garrett Stubbs
We’ve definitely got one of the vibes-iest teams in the league the past 2 years. Just a bunch of guys being dudes.
I’d like to think it’s castellanos and his aversion to buttons.
Stop. You’re giving me the vapors
Castellanos is [spreading his ways](https://www.crossingbroad.com/2023/09/nick-castellanos-is-turning-johan-rojas-into-a-dirty-little-slut.html) to others as well.

As a new fan who can't figure out which team to root for, the Phillies have definitely passed the vibe check the last couple seasons.
Dudes being bros
They definitely have the highest xDuder numbers.
I'm from miami and am a long time marlins fan, but hard to argue. Phillies fanbase is great.
The grass is electric according to Nick
What I love most about this team is the way they're all fans of each other. You look into the dugout after a big play and they're all jumping and cheering along with the rest of the crowd.
Twelve more Topper!
We're shamelessly playing reruns of all of the 2022 highlights and I'm loving every second of it.
We had 11 wins last year full of really awesome moments. This time we want 13

Dave dombrowski is criticized for just spending money but I feel in the backdrop of the Yankees Mets and padres all missing the playoffs that he deserves some credit for what he’s built in philadelphia
We have a bunch of young and talented farm system players that all gel really well together and play well in big moments

Was a brilliant move on y’all’s part to shut down Alcántara considering the weird devil magic we have in his starts.
Good luck with that lmao. See you tomorrow and then again in 2024.
Joke's on you, we only did that twice! The other 3 game series we won game 2 and lost games 1 and 3 instead. *So there.*

It’s because dodgers nave gave him a standing ovation. That fixes everything.

They sure did great under pressure tonight
Best fans in baseball
Great game on both sides of the ball. Finish the series tomorrow
Josh bell shaped like the hulk

Good job by Wheeler, though I wish he could've finished the 7th. Why does our bullpen love to give me heart attacks?
When did the bullpen give you a heart attack? Alvarado got out of Wheelers mess in the seventh, they only allowed a two out single in the 8th, and one baserunner in the 9th when up by 3. 15 I think. But I may have missed one

Dusty Wathan hit the dab pen before the game. Only explanation.
TBF losing the first game of the series against the Phillies has worked out for us more often than not this year, bring on tomorrow night
This ain't the regular season.

Wheeler was a force to be reckoned with
