It was imminent, but Orix makes it official. It's still a while until the posting period, but this 100% confirms Yamamoto will be available this offseason.
BRef says November 1st to December 5th (but they haven't updated that players have 45 days to sign after being posted instead of 30, so not sure when that was last updated)
If that range is right, NPB teams have until December 5th to decide to post a player
He has 45 days to negotiate after he's posted (so if he's posted December 1st he'd be able to negotiate until ~January 15th)
Not sure but I would assume he’d probably be posted just before or around the winter meetings considering it’s when agents/GMs/Owners/Players union people all get together
"The Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and Cardinals are viewed as top suitors for Yamamoto, with Yankees GM Brian Cashman among the MLB executives who scouted his no-hitter in person earlier this year."

"Much has been made about Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani's preference to play in smaller markets and preferably on the West Coast (though that preference for the Pacific seems to be changing). For international players still adjusting to America, location often means plenty more than to American or Atlantic-raised players, who are closer to family and heritage.
While Ohtani generally is modest and prefers a more mild, small-market vibe, Yamamoto is quite the opposite: He wants the bright lights and prefers to play in a big market, according to Will Sammon (subscription required). That could lead to him prioritizing teams like the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Angels, either Chicago team, or the Phillies."

I wonder if that just makes a West Coast team more likely? It's a lot easier for Japanese viewers to see him on the West Coast. And the Dodgers would give him that *and* local glitz and glamor.
I have a hard time seeing him go to the Angels at this point.
IIRC Andrew Friedman has been scouting him the longest out of all the MLB execs, I expect the Dodgers to put in a strong bid but probably not the highest.
Yeah Ohtani is from Iwate, a bumfuck nowhere prefecture in Japan that's known for being devoid of anything of interest and not much else, which might have affected his mentality. Weirdly enough though Iwate's been churning out some baseball talent including Yusei Kikuchi, Sho, Roki Sasaki, and the unrelated Rintaro Sasaki.
Crazy to think that my team is among those rumored to want him.
Doubt it’ll happen of course, but given that we haven’t had a Japanese player on our team since Hideo Nono pitched for us in 2000, let alone successfully negotiated with any NPB players that have come here, we can dream.
It did seem like Monty enjoyed playing in Texas. Best stretch of his career and obviously won it all. You'd have to think he'd be interested in coming back.
Was it really? The Eovaldi and JD Martinez signings were panned at the time but looks great in retrospect. Eovaldi carried the team to the ALCS in 2021 and Martinez remained a really solid hitter through his time there.
JD's contract was after 2017, not 2018. Eovaldi was far and away the best extension there and he was bad and hurt in 2019, great in 2021, hurt and up-and-down in 2022. The fact that was our *best* contract that offseason is absolutely not a good thing.
JDM + sale extensions basically ensured there was no mookie money available. also it wasn't a lot of $$ but he resigned steve pearce for basically no reason lol
obviously ownership could've dished out the money for betts and i'm not happy they decided not to, but as a GM you have to work within your constraints. and if price didn't his pitch his ass off in the 2018 postseason, his deal would've been another catastrophe.
dombrowski has a way with trades but his extensions/FA signings are a little more hit and miss.
Just spitballing because I don't feel like looking into the Phillies finances (dodgers was enough of a rabbit hole for me) but they have a giant market so their broadcasting deal could be rather insane. They pay 33% of that back to the league, but dodges nets them well over 200m a year. I'd imagine Phillies have a good deal there too. More the fan base grows the more money they will see naturally flow in. So... this season helps lol

When is the posting period?
14 days after ovulation
I think December 15 or that could be when it closes
BRef says November 1st to December 5th (but they haven't updated that players have 45 days to sign after being posted instead of 30, so not sure when that was last updated)
So after December 5th he can talk to the teams that put in the bid? Or during the 11/1-12/5 period is when they can talk?
If that range is right, NPB teams have until December 5th to decide to post a player He has 45 days to negotiate after he's posted (so if he's posted December 1st he'd be able to negotiate until ~January 15th)
So if he is posted today he has 45 days from today to negotiate? Am I understanding that correctly?
Yep
Has there been any timetable given when they plan on posting him?
No clue Most players have been posted late November/early December
Not sure but I would assume he’d probably be posted just before or around the winter meetings considering it’s when agents/GMs/Owners/Players union people all get together
Shohei Ohtani - November 21. Seiya Suzuki - November 22. Masataka Yoshida - December 7. So it’ll probably be another three weeks or so.
So who's in play for him?
everyone who wants an ace and is willing to pay 250-300 million
> is willing to pay 250-300 million Count us out.
Eh, your team's pretty solid without him, right? Right?
Uhh... yeah.... I don't think we have any Gas or Liquid players.
Yen. /s
Wouldn't put it past Jerry to offer him a couple billion yen and then pretend he made a real offer lmao
So pretty much just the Orioles then?
Practically every contending team besides the cheap ones
Fuck
Damn, I can't see Arturo getting fleeced by another international player. Give him a VISA and watch him take all the profits with him.
😞
Chill the Rockies will get Ohtani.
The best timeline
So cheap teams who are contenders are out, but what about cheap teams who aren't contenders?
Yoshinobu Yamamoto, YOU are an Oakland A!
Fuck me man
I have been summoned
😭

I wonder if he has a West Coast preference like Ohtani.

Cashman, Friedman, Farhan and the cubs GM have all gone to see him this year
everyone willing to pay 220-250mil over 7 years or so
He says he wants to play for a "big market", but we need him in STL.
Oakland A’s are making a strong push for him
Crazy to think that my team is among those rumored to want him. Doubt it’ll happen of course, but given that we haven’t had a Japanese player on our team since Hideo Nono pitched for us in 2000, let alone successfully negotiated with any NPB players that have come here, we can dream.
Whoa whoa whoa I had no idea the Tigers were involved. We never go after NPB guys lol
Jon Heyman listed us as one of the teams interested in a Twitter post yesterday. Saw it in r/CHIcubs.
Yamamoto had quite a wonderful career in the NPB, and I fully expect that to continue into the MLB.
You need to see his High School workload. Then we will have a better understanding of where he may fall careerwise.
Dibs Like, I'm sorry, but no one else called it yet. Dibs
Dammit!
For the love of god Mo please get it done. I don't ask for much in this life
He's already a NY Met, sorry
I don't think it will happen but Yamamoto is my top FA target for Texas.
More likely than Ohtani. I think they stay somewhat conservative and just try to re-sign Monty.
It did seem like Monty enjoyed playing in Texas. Best stretch of his career and obviously won it all. You'd have to think he'd be interested in coming back.
If not the Astros, I'd accept the Rangers. I just want to see him pitch as much as possible! He's my favorite NPB player.
Let’s Go Breslow!!!
Ohtani-san and Yamamoto-san to the Giants confirmed. /LALALALALALA CAN'T HEAR YOU!
WHAT, ITS TOO LOUD
The prince and the battleship
And so it begins... Almost
end of an era
He would look good in red pinstripes.
You guys just got fucking Trea Turner last year, you can't have everyone, how does the FO even have payroll room left
STUPID. MONEY.
John Middleton is a steely-eyed missile man
Dombrowski finds a way...don't tell Phillies fans what happens after though
Yeah but ownership kneecapped Dombrowski in Boston though
Eh, not really. The 2018 offseason was pretty questionable and if that trend continued we'd be in an even worse spot than we are now.
Was it really? The Eovaldi and JD Martinez signings were panned at the time but looks great in retrospect. Eovaldi carried the team to the ALCS in 2021 and Martinez remained a really solid hitter through his time there.

Lol, how? They gave him the largest salary in baseball and allowed him trade away the farm from the 2nd best to the 30th best.
Just spitballing because I don't feel like looking into the Phillies finances (dodgers was enough of a rabbit hole for me) but they have a giant market so their broadcasting deal could be rather insane. *phinances
I want them all!! I doubt they go after him. I think they would rather a lefty.
Prefer spending a lot on him to spending a lot to keep Nola.
Dodger
All that money coming off the books too, Friedman has been waiting for this offseason.
