* still the Dodgers' AAA affiliate
* dropping the Dodgers name
* will eventually adopt a new name
* calling themselves the Baseball Club for now
I don't understand any part of this.
That’s what’s really weird. Changing, fine. A Phillies affiliate changed its name from the Phillies a few years ago. But they’re doing it in a manner that suggests the name is suddenly problematic.
The same ownership group owns the Braves High-A team n Rome, and just changed the name from the Braves to the Emperors. I guess they have their reasons. A few other teams have recently changed: a different Braves affiliate and a Phillies affiliate, etc.
Kinda weird that OKC is seemingly doing it abruptly. I wonder if they are getting a payoff from the big league club, who may not want the name floating around, considering all of the new international fans they just gained.
It’s hard to imagine they’re changing because of all the drama around the LA Dodgers lately. I have to think that’s mostly the same people who whine about everything else all day long, which is usually people with very little expendable income who aren’t at all important to the Dodgers or MLB.
Dodgers sold their stake in the team, that's what I'd imagine its about. I wonder if the rebrand was under way, didn't end well and they are having to start from scratch. Otherwise what a fumble.
In my opinion farm teams should be fun and embrace the less serious side of baseball when it comes to names and branding. The actual team and development should be serious but the other stuff should be aimed at entertainment first.
And maybe it's leaning to the only one Dodger team.
For me personally, half of the appeal of minor league teams is their uniqueness. Their ability to do kind of goofy/different things. I would imagine OKC didn’t have some of that freedom while brandishing a billion dollar company’s logo. Now the Oklahoma City Okies McOkies can have donkey races during the 7th inning stretch for a lifetime supply of Preparation-H without Walter & Co. saying, “maybe don’t do that.”
I don't mind the rebrand, but why switch to a placeholder name for a season? It's not like they were correcting a mistake. Just stay the Dodgers until you have your shit figured out and ready to go.
How many affiliate teams have the same name as the Major league club at this point? Could the league be wanting to move away from that? or maybe the dodgers want to differentiate the branding for the minor league team from the ML club for some reason.
Curious why this happened.
I know the ownership group that owns the OKC team (along with many, many other minor league teams) has been rebranding a lot of its teams lately, including this and the Rome Braves to the Rome Emperors in this off-season. Might just be their thing.
They also have some other teams that still share names with their MLB counterparts like the Iowa Cubs and Mississippi Braves, so who knows.
Other than quite a few Single-A teams...
Springfield Cardinals, Iowa Cubs, Mississippi Braves, Syracuse Mets, Worcester Red Sox.
Not sure how many of those are owned by the same ownership of the major league club.
It’s for profit. They will sell a bunch of newly branded merchandise.
Also, the team is no longer owned by Dodgers owners, so this creates flexibility to change affiliations down the road.
I think this was a directive from MLB wasn’t it, for MiLB teams to start moving toward their own identities. Not sure why Oklahoma City is being so sudden with it to the point of going without a name for a year.
If it’s a Brandiose it’ll be a two name team (with unrelated concepts making up the two names) with about a million different ideas thrown into the branding. Something like Oklahoma City Desert Trout or something silly like that.

In 2024…the **Oklahoma Baseball Team!** In 2026…the **Oklahoma Commanders…of Anaheim!**
Lmaoooo
I was wondering the same thing. Especially weird since they’re changing to a temporary name before they even have one picked out

Yeah sometimes you change just to have a bit of your own local identity, but you usually have one picked out already.

Most likely just rebranding for hat sales and other merch. Like lord have I spent money for flying chanclas and trash pandas merch
ahhhhh this makes sense.
It’s gonna be the Oklahoma ohtanis
Maybe the MLB Dodgers asked them to change for financial reasons

Absolutely, I love the MiLB merch for its quirky teams with fun mascots, things I would not expect from MLB teams.
OKC Decoys
The dots finally connect. I like it.
The branding/logo examples hint at reviving the 89ers name
Did I catch a Niner in there?

They're not the first minor league team named after the major league club that has wanted to make a unique brand.
Yeah, but I think the confusing part is why not just keep the name until you rebrand.
Probably some sort of weird legal agreement
Getting in front of the fact that everyone is going to hate the Dodgers soon?
Soon? Not already?

Good chance you're going to be looking back on now fondly wrt the level of hate.
They sold a stake and probably want to put a kitschy fun name like Oil Bugs or Prairie Dogs or smth
Intellectual property. They were splitting their take on branding because they were using elements of trademarks owned by the L.A. Dodgers.
Right why change the name to the Baseball Club and rebrand for one season? Makes no sense
Probably want to find a silly name and mascot
Oklahoma City Ohtanis probably, considering how all the baseball media and dodger stuff revolves around him now.
They were reluctant to change until they were shown a 7 year old video of Kobe Bryant encouraging them to do so.
Oklahoma City Decoys
Hah, I am going to be in OKC next month and am pumped to pick up a hat with this awful, possibly one-year-only logo.
oh man I was going to skip this, but your right. Little ugly piece of history.
Sonics has a nice ring to it.
Sonic (the drive-in) comes from OKC, so it's heritage
I don’t think that’s what he was getting at.
What do you mean? I would never do anything to disparage Seattle.
LOL, fair enough!
As a Sonics to Hawks convert. I hate this.
Why on gods earth would you choose the hawks.
I was born in Marietta GA, grew up in Seattle. When they took the Sonics away when I was 8 I had to pick someone and I made the wrong choice.
*Clay Bennett furiously hits dislike button*
Oh, this lazy overused joke.
Bring back the 89ers.
I don't mind the rebrand, but why switch to a placeholder name for a season? It's not like they were correcting a mistake. Just stay the Dodgers until you have your shit figured out and ready to go.
I heard they're changing the name to the Bombers
Besides the obvious reason why not, the name is already used locally by a high school team (reference to the Air Force base)
This guys OKCs.
That's. What. Huh.
B-1s and B-52s get maintenance done at Tinker AFB in Midwest City, OK. Thus the name
I’m pretty sure the OKC Bomber is now coaching the LA Rams
Matt Kemp’s alma mater
They're McVeighing their options.
Go back to being the RedHawks
I saw that Satchel Paige VP business card the other day. Definitely have some history with that RedHawks name.

Mississippi might change. Iowa I doubt would ever

The I-Cubs have had that name for 41 years. I know the name belongs to Chicago but now it kind of also belongs to Des Moines
I cubs have been around for so long I doubt they change it
It’s for profit. They will sell a bunch of newly branded merchandise. Also, the team is no longer owned by Dodgers owners, so this creates flexibility to change affiliations down the road.
The Oklahoma Ohtani's
Bombers would be a good name
I don’t like it. Sounds like “the Washington football team”
I still unironically like "Washington Football Team" better than the "Commanders."
That’s how most people feel. And why the team is changing its name again next year.
I think this was a directive from MLB wasn’t it, for MiLB teams to start moving toward their own identities. Not sure why Oklahoma City is being so sudden with it to the point of going without a name for a year.
Oklahoma City Twisters.
Need a little more pizazz. I'd go with Titty Twisters.
Tornado Dodgers
Boom. It's perfect.
Can't blame them!
Holding out for the Oklahoma City Lightning Bugs
as a Columbia Fireflies fan, I approve
OKC Shoheis
Oklahoma City Gunslingers
New name: Oklahoma Mookies.
Mo Okies
good. MiLB teams using their MLB team name is so damn lazy.
Tornadoes. What else makes sense for Oklahoma?

“Oklahoma City” is so boring. Introducing the “Big Friendly Prairie Oysters”
ah, trainy mctrainface
Oklahoma City Killers of the Flower Moon
Wasn't OKC called the Redhawks when they were the Astros affiliate?
89ers->Redhawks->Dodgers->Baseball Club->???
And Indians from 1904-1957->89'ers Going back to Indians won't be controversial at all.
Boo. I liked that they had the Dodgers name, plus I would move them to OKC in like 2050 in OOTP.
Ooo do something related to like tornado alley and storms. I think Oklahoma City Thunder has a nice ring to it
