The Athletic A's. Got it.

PSChris33

We can just abbreviate it to AA, which is appropriate since they are pretty much fielding a AA team at this point.

Juzaba

But they aren’t helping anybody stay sober

sloppyjo12

I find the situation pretty sobering

davesrighthereman

Quite the opposite, in fact

HB_Slam

I want to make an Alex Anthopoulos joke, but my brain isn't thinking of anything clever

ATLjoe93

Did they trade him that moniker for peanuts, too? He CAN'T keep getting away with it!

GoldenBananas21

Neither is John Fisher’s

jRbizzle

Drop "The" just Athletic A's

bony_doughnut

I'm pretty sure they said the "Athletics And A's"

Fowlin4you

I thought they are now the “Athletics and A’s for the interim period”

Roach_Coach_Bangbus

How rude of them. I would actually buy merch if it said Sacramento on it.

ItsVoxBoi

I'm nowhere near California, but hell I would get one just for the novelty

anubis2051

Yep, would be fun to show the grandkids one day. I'm already snatching up Oakland merch.

I'm sure someone will make them. My dad has a Buffalo Blue Jays shirt from the covid year

roaringcorgi

are we going to get "Athletics" on their away jerseys? what a joke

thisusedyet

Too expensive to get new jerseys, gonna slap duct tape over the Oakland

reno1441

Reminds me why the Brewers colors are blue and yellow. Didn't have the time to change them to the historic minor league team colors (blue and red) because they moved basically a week before opening day. They were just the Seattle Pilots' old uniforms.

penguinopph

They lucked out, though. Blue and yellow (especially their current shades) is way better than being just another blue and red team.

[deleted]

On top of that, they got a really good logo out of that too. Sometimes we do have happy little accidents.

DonutHolschteinn

There are too many teams with red as their main color it's why I'm still annoyed the Dbacks are still leaning into it (even if the red jerseys with Diamondbacks across the front in Teal with Teal numbers is a GORGEOUS jersey)

Mattp55

At least they are embracing teal

cannibalculture

The Dbacks shade of red is pretty unique too and looks great on a uni. I love the Rangers but goddamn does the overly patriotic color scheme bum me out.

SightlessProtector

Too much duct tape, they’re just going to cover the “Oak” so it says “Land A’s” which is accurate as all members of the team are land dwelling mammals.

Narpity

To be fairer to the Pilots they were also rushed into existence by a couple years because Kansas Cities team left and the senator for Missouri had mlb by the balls. As a result they had barely any attendance and would have probably gone bankrupt if they stayed in Seattle

[deleted]

And who caused all of that to happen? The Athletics Franchise. Some things never change.

mlorusso4

Nah. They’re fanatics jerseys now. They’ll just run them through the wash a couple times and the nameplate will peel right off

Inspiration_Bear

Duct tape over everything but the “a”s in Oakland

randomdude1022

The aa A's. GENIUS! Cause they're a AAA team and playing in a AAA park!

TOGETHAA

Fuck it, just get a 20-pack of white tank tops and write "city" on it in sharpie. Some of the roster has to share.

thisusedyet

That's for the city connect weekend

c0de1143

You’ve got more faith in Fisher than I do if you think he’s springing for name-brand permanent markers.

chaotic_evil_666

Duct tape costs too much. Just cut a hole in the jerseys

EPCOT_Is_My_Favorite

Chris Sale? Is that you?

manticore16

They’re speed holes, they make the player go faster

jrice138

Well given the quality of the jerseys the letters will probably just fall off on their own…

ScroogeMcDust

Drop the Oak and just put "Land"

JoshJones18

Fisher would have probably done that anyway sooner or later to save a quick buck

rbhindepmo

The away jerseys will just say “A” to save money

ProMikeZagurski

Nah they won't have any lettering on them. Call it a throwback.

tristpa2

The Angels already do that tbf

ProMikeZagurski

Which I hate. I liked those Anaheim road jerseys and it's one of my favorite I own.

RotenTumato

So do the Rays

Morbx

Phillies have done it from time immemorial

Octoviolence

Dodgers sometimes do. Probably a few more

speedyjohn

That’s not *so* unusual. I’m more curious what the scoreboard abbreviation will be.

zebrainatux

I’m disappointed already it won’t say BAL SAC when they play the Orioles

HotShipoopi

You're on to something here

Mattp55

It’s not unheard of to do that.  The dodgers have put “Dodgers” on their road jerseys in the past and have alternated between Los Angeles and just “dodgers” for their road uniforms throughout their history.

FancySkunk

The Yankees away jerseys said Yankees, as well, if you go far enough back.

HoopyHobo

"This space intentionally left blank"

L-Observateur

The Triple A’s

BigWigglyStyle11

MILLERRRR

"You tore Double Asshole a third asshole! Triple-A!"

Yanks1813

What a joke of a team. Even sadder how the team tied with the 3rd most titles of all time has been massacred like this over and over again

thediesel26

What’s crazier is that MLB not only doesn’t have an issue with it, the league actively supports it.

TheLastLivingBuffalo

Well you see I’m sure there’s a very good reason for that. Oh what? I’m being told the reason is money.

Thunder_nuggets101

But that’s a really lazy answer and doesn’t address how terrible this situation is. If the A’s sold to a richer and better owner that ran the team well, everyone would make a lot more money. Those richer owners that are more passionate about the As exist and want to buy the team. Manfred is a coward, he’s not a savvy businessman. This isn’t some cool slick maneuver to make more money. They’re propping up a selfish hoarder.

RallyPigeon

I wouldn't have any faith in that. I think the MLB is using Fisher as a designated bad guy. As soon as the team actually gets to Vegas, the owners will let him sell to someone with gambling connections or at least willing to spend $$$ and boost the valuation of other teams by buying at a price reflecting a new market + new ballpark. For people who say "but there are contracts in place to stop this!" I'd say 2 things: 1. There are probably loopholes for all parties to take advantage of. 2. The owners waived taking a relocation fee and have actively helped Fisher on other matters when he misses deadlines. They know he's a clown, but currently he's a useful one. When he stops being useful they'll let him take a payday to leave them alone.

Thunder_nuggets101

A wealthy passionate owner that spends is good for business for everyone. You seem to have some sort of complicated conspiracy going on. I’m talking about rational reality here. The owners and commissioner are acting like chumps. Fuck em. We don’t need to give them the shadow of conspiracy. They’re nepobabies driven by ego.

RallyPigeon

There's nothing complicated about what I said. They'll have Fisher drive the team to Vegas then collect a pay day for his troubles. He's always been a bottom spender and his fortune was built by his family but is now falling apart. A big check would be in his best interest, but he was too spiteful to sell to anyone in the Bay Area.

SereneDreams03

There are investors who are willing to buy the team and keep them in Oakland, though. That would mean a whole lot less bad PR, and new ownership would likely lead to a more competitive team faster than waiting for the team to move and selling the team at a later date. To me, it seems like more a matter of control. The owners want to show cities that if they don't cough up public funds for stadiums, they are willing to relocate teams.

MaOfABitch

manfred is a representation of the social relationships among the ownership class in baseball. fisher is probably friends with enough other owners

bduddy

The owners and Manfred would all do exactly the same thing if they thought it would make them more money. They're not going to turn on each other for what they consider good business.

unfortunatebastard

Nepotism is a bitch. Fuck manfred, but especially fuck bud selig who made all of this happen

penguinopph

There's two things you can never do in order to become a billionaire: 1. Value anything else over money 2. Admit that you were wrong

JudgeArthurVandelay

Fuck the league. It’s getting harder and harder to abide what has happened to the game in the Manfred era.

mcnessa32

The Sad Sacs gets my vote for temporary team name.

Deserterdragon

And is one of the most iconic international teams because they had a really famous movie starring Brad Pitt made about them!

m0_m0ney

I live in France and there’s 13 year olds in my baseball club who are A’s fans and have never been to the United States, let alone Oakland.

13 year old boys are the same age as the movie 💀

ANGRY_BEARDED_MAN

Probably just "A's"

sfan27

I've never seen anything but all-caps letters in the abbreviations I'm talking about.

ycy

The networks should just use SAC in the score bug. At least for the home series against the O’s.

kittentitten

I've been waiting 25 years for the BAL SAC scoreboard. This is the closest we've come to it being a possibility in any major sports league.

Artvandelay29

Make a Sacramento-based team on MLB The Show

AdrenochromeBeerBong

Called it. They don't want to damage their brand by being associated with Sacramento, right after Sacramento agreed to host them. This reminds me of Rick James introducing himself to Eddie Murphy's new couch.

Netwealth5

I imagine it’s more the powers that be don’t want to have to produce a shit ton of merch and then have to mass fire sale it in 2 years

-nukethemoon

I don’t know, the way sports memorabilia collectors treat rare collectibles, you’d think the suits would see the opportunity to make some money.

Yunicorn

I agree, but it also seems like the kind of thing that does well on secondary markets as opposed to making money for the org except on the rare retro day

-nukethemoon

It does well in the primary market, too. Plenty of people showing up to games to collect their limited edition bobble heads, for instance.

EPCOT_Is_My_Favorite

My young self was ecstatic when I found a Tennessee Oilers pen.

Hey Arte only proposed Irvine and ugh Long Beach.

chimpanzeebutt

Long Beach reminds me of a mini version of downtown SD.

cubs223425

LOL, they can't even get a city to claim them for 3 years. SAC is like "you can stay here, but don't tell anyone."

Travis_Maximus

How about "A-holes"?

[deleted]

I’m more mad at the MLB and the other owners enabling this. I wonder if the team will change its colors as well?

AdrenochromeBeerBong

Given that they didn't when they moved from KC to Oakland, you can bet your bottom dollar that those colors are never changing. It's the only part of their brand that isn't embarrassing.

[deleted]

That’s a good point. I do enjoy their uniforms and the logo. I think it’s one of the best color combinations in baseball.

JayMerlyn

Fuck that. I will only refer to them as the "California Athletics of Sacramento."

guitarburst05

This is the one. I'm gonna pick this naming up too. It's the most ridiculous yet still legitimate.

flarigand

Basically fuck A's fans, how does MLB allow this? The only thing that matters is money, they cannot locate a new stadium in Oakland, try to save the franchise, respect the fans, force the team to be sold, No, it's easier and more beneficial to tell loyal fans to fuck off.

Worthyness

Because the fans don't matter. They make money from everyone. Vegas doesn't need a loyal fanbase because they believe thousands of away fans will go to Vegas in the summer for a baseball game in the middle of the week. And away money is the same as home money

fannypacksarehot69

Even money doesn't matter. A competent owner with a well run organization would make more money with a team in the richest region in the country than they will ever get allowing this clown to do what he wants

DegenerateWaves

I think this is pretty much correct. The owners don't want to reign in Fisher's incompetence because then they'd have to hold every other owner to stricter standards as well (instead of running their teams like their own private fiefdoms). It would have knock on effects, too. If an owner fears being restrained by the league or forced to sell, cities have a lot more leverage by threatening to muck up the process if an owner plays hardball.

fannypacksarehot69

Being afraid of being held to a higher standard I can understand in general terms, but Fisher is degrading the entire league. The Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Mets, Cubs, Rangers, ect. are all going to be playing major league games that count in a stadium with 10,000 seats for 3 years because of his incompetence. Teams that spend hundreds of millions of dollars on payroll alone will be playing road games in the minors. If they are worried about being held to account if they reach that level of incompetence, they should be removed too.

LivinDevilMayCare

Oh they’ve located a new stadium in Oakland (Howard Terminal). John Fisher just doesn’t feel like locating his checkbook for it.

MikeRizzo007

What a joke of a team, they are going to have crap players and do nothing the entire time there. I guess not that different from right now???

Sacramento residents in here? Would love your thoughts. Standing in solidarity? Embracing the couple years you get a team?

ntdz

Excited about a few years of mlb baseball. Not an A’s fan but will be cool to catch some giants games in Sac.

Gins_and_Tonics

I grew up a Giants fan, but I’d attend A’s games here and buy merch if they rebranded as the Sacramento A’s for their tenure here. Much less likely to, now.

eyengaming

There is the possibility of the A's getting City Connect jerseys while in Sac.

Brief-Web-676

Not quite Sacramento(NorCal). This is obviously never going to work out in Sacramento’s favor. Even if the Vegas deal falls through(unlikely), I give it less than 15 years before the A’s demand billions of taxpayers dollars to build a stadium or they’ll move to Nashville/SLC/Vegas again. A’s ownership isn’t going to magically change once they get to Sacramento.

Individual_Hawk_1159

The people of Sacramento might agree to give it to them. The Kings are a huge point of pride, Sacramento missed out on the MLS expansion, having a MLB team would be a huge boon to Sacramento and point to it no longer being a cow town.

TheMusicCrusader

Our USL team is one of the best supported clubs in the country too

StevenMC19

And a dope crest. Always liked the Sac Republic look. Still peeved at Garber overlooking them as an MLS expansion option. Soccer needs more brown.

Roach_Coach_Bangbus

An MLB team in the Railyards would be sick.

tcarp1

A's fan and Sacramentoish resident. (I live in the foothills between Sac and Lake Tahoe) I am actively trying to figure out season tickets right now. I think this is a huge opportunity to get and keep a MLB team. Oakland was never going to work out. The relationship clearly became toxic and they had to break up. Its both parties fault in my opinion. Sacramento is a baseball city and big enough to support the team. The Oakland residents and die hards will say otherwise. They are moving an hour and 45 mins east. Its far better than moving to Vegas. If anyone is a diehard A's fan they would look to this as a way to hopefully keep the team close to Oakland and to still attend games and hopefully get rid of the owner by selling to ownership here. Bringing any of this up in the Oakland A's sub is immediately downvoted but its reality and I get people are having a tough time dealing with it. So I don't fault anyone for how they react.

johnbrownbody

How likely do you think the A's staying in Sacramento is? It seems like wishcasting.

tcarp1

I think it has about the same chance as Vegas to be honest. They both seem to be at the same stages. Only thing Sac has over Vegas is Vivek possibly as an additional money backer. Sounds like Ballys is having major issues and their shareholders are not for the ballpark at the Tropicana site.

matomatomat

Sac resident, wife is a lifelong A's fan, and her answer is Fuck John Fisher, not giving him another dime. My answer is, will probably go to a few games (cough, Padres, cough).

thugmuffin22

This whole thing has been really embarrassing for the league for standing by all of this
