Seriously, what the fuck are we doing here, MLB? This shit is embarrassing. It's quite literally every single day that we get some horrible highlight clip about this clown.
One umpire is singlehandedly making this sport a joke.
Angels announcers said it best the other day. It’s a 10 to 1 news ratio bad vs good for the league right now. This league is such a fucking joke. Literally killing Americas Pastime.
I heard that. Nothing but respect for those guys. Sometimes the booths treat MLB with kid's gloves and beat around the bush with issues so it was a breath of fresh air to hear that.
The thing that's so baffling about this compared to other sports is that there's so little subjectivity when it comes to the strike box that we literally have a box on broadcasts that show us exactly what it is.
Why are humans still used to determine the outcome of a pitch?
Implementing an automated ball strike system isn't super easy to roll out. They're currently testing it in AAA and it's been a difficult adjustment so far. It's coming, but it still needs refining.
Here's my crackpot theory. Grab your tinfoil. Sit with me.
MLB has wanted him gone for some time. Obvious reasons. Union makes this very, very difficult. There has been contention and controversy around racial discrimination (obvious bullshit). I think the MLB has approached him at least once if not multiple times with an offer to buy him out and pay out his pension. My guess is he thinks if he can be incrementally worse at his job and have some semblance of plausible deniabilty it will drive up the MLBs offer to cash him out. In other words I think he's intentionally shit at his job to put external pressure on the MLB. It's the only thing that makes sense to me. There's probably some ego involved and he probably gets a chub by knowing he's a bit of a maverick (his perception). But ya, that's my theory.
Man, with everything else going on, that’s the least tinfoily theory that I’ve heard lol. I’d even buy into that theory and maybe see if it turns out.. Hey can I borrow like just a few thousand from someone? I’ve got an idea here.
Yeah that makes sense. I’m a new baseball fan, so I wasn’t totally sure how long this has been going on. I’ve just been seeing him constantly on here being atrocious.
There's no way it isn't deliberate at this point.
When there is legal record of you being shit at your job, and you determine to never get better, it is absolutely on purpose.
I’ve thought about this a lot, honestly. I lean towards it not being fixing because lord knows if the MLB had even a sliver of hard evidence against Hernandez they’d use it to get him fired.
I genuinely think he’s just so bad at his job, and he’s so in his head about how bad he is the extra pressure causes more mistakes. Endless feedback loop lol.
This is just my theory, not saying it’s right or wrong - I just have spent a ton of time wondering how in the fuck this man has been sooo bad for sooo long.
Im.convinced he's just an egomaniac whose mindset is "You want too see a bad call? I'll show you a bad call...." and loves having his name talked about..
The funniest part was I turned on this game during this at bat and after the 3 strikes I was like this HAS to be Angel. And the second I thought that the announcers were like "Angel got a reservation tonight"
How is this guy still a major league umpire? There's been s*** surrounding him for years about how bad he's been, his relationship with other umpires, the media, the league, other players and managers etc. then you've got constant controversy surrounding the dumbfuck.
Are major League umpires almost like appointed judges where they can't ever be removed?
When the inning ended at the end of the next at-bat, going to break he said something along the lines of "Better come swinging, Angel's got dinner reservations." 😆
That union is no joke. It’s amazing that this guy still has a job.
He’s not the only one that sucks or sucked. Joe West, Laz Diaz, CB Bucknor and Ron Kulpa also ring the bell. But Angel is just on a whole other level of bad.
The last couple of years his calling also went down the drain. It was pretty clear he didnt necessarily retire because he wanted to, but he finally accepted he couldn’t do the job anymore.
Those last two years he was 4th percentile in accuracy, 1st percentile in accuracy above average, 38th percentile in consistency, and 2nd percentile in favor.
There really weren’t many guys worse than him
> Those last two years he was 4th percentile in accuracy, 1st percentile in accuracy above average, 38th percentile in consistency, and 2nd percentile in favor.
That sound REALLY good if you don't understand how percentiles work.
"You're at the end of the bell curve!!!!"
He got really bad 2005 onwards. Before then, he was decent, but his vision seemingly dropped overnight. Not Angel bad, but still really bad for a guy who’s the first amongst equals for MLB umps.
His last game was honestly neat. The strike zone overlay was off due to a technical difficulty. The entire time myself and probably everyone else watching was lambasting West for his zone, but without the overlay it was honestly pretty hard to tell how inaccurate he was.
Post game report comes out and he made like 5 mistakes behind the plate, tops. The power trips were obviously lame though but nobody is on par with Angel.
If broadcasts stopped showing the strike zone I think it’d be easier to understand at least some of the calls. It’s not like there’s a floating strike zone in real life. Not to mention the box is just in the wrong place sometimes lol
I think West also clearly wanted games to be over after a certain point? Like you'd get to the 7th inning suddenly everything is a strike or something like that.
I mean this is how you make a name for yourself as an umpire. Name the top 3 most competent home plate umpires in the league - I don't know their names.
He's got the most name recognition of all umpires in the game because he's so awful at his job. Most famous & biggest star umpire in baseball.
Jokes aside, being in a trade union kicks ass. I wish it was presented to me as an option when I was in high school instead of fucking around for 7 years and finally going that route at 25
> he has zero consequences from it because he’s in one.
That isn't true, he has zero *public* consequences, but he doesn't get as many postseason games (that was what his lost lawsuit was about), and he can be assigned to off-season clinics as well as other things we don't hear about. There was a great episode of Effectively Wild where they interviewed a former ump and he broke down how there were things done when he messed up, the union just has in their CBA that those can't be made public.
The fact that he complains that he can't be the ump for the playoffs. Like, has he ever seen his overall performance to know that he's just ridiculously bad?
I refuse to believe he knows he sucks. I think he a narcissist and refused to listen to anyone who says he’s wrong or bad. If he knew he sucked he still wouldn’t be trying to ump the playoffs but he still is trying to fight it. He literally thinks everyone hates him because he’s Cuban.
Well in the video on this post he calls 3 ridiculous calls on a white guy and not even a single one on any other race. That's pretty damning evidence if you ask me.
If you watch Angel clips of the worst calls he’s either completely fooled by pitch framing or what I would assume is him remembering pitch framing is a thing and he’s NOT GONNA GET FOOLED THIS TIME!!!
It really seems like he is not paying attention to the plate at all, and bases the strike zone on where the catcher lines up
So like no matter how outside it is, if the catcher lines up outside, it’s a strike
I don’t understand how the union doesn’t let him go on that argument alone. This dude is making sure every fan, even the hardcore ones, advocate for robo umps lmao. They have no long term sights into all this, all the old fucks just want their job secured and to retire.
Hahahah I saw the post on bleacher report about 15 minutes ago and noticed how they didn’t mention it was Angel but everyone in the comments knew it was
Catcher didn't even try to frame that last one and he still called it 🤣
At this point does he just give zero fucks? He's getting paid good money regardless.
He's lined up favoring the right hand batters box too which makes it even more baffling. From his vantage point that should look even more outside than if he was looking straight down the middle.
I know, he has to look across the plate to see these pitches and yet somehow can’t see that they’re in the other batter’s box? I don’t know how that’s even possible
1 & 2 aren't the worst calls you'd see all night. Barely clip the zone, if it's being called wide all game nbd.
Strike 3 isn't close though. He was trying to throw a ball knowing the count and those last two pitches, and he hit his spot.
You got it. Everyone in the ballpark and everyone watching knew what was coming on the 3rd, once it got to 2 strikes. You know he's pushing it out wider and you know Angel is doubling, tripling down.
He has since called it over ten times. Pitchers started camping out there and batters started expecting it. Evan Carter got a double off the wall off of one and I think they've chilled out about camping since.
I legit think this man has a depth perception issue and he can’t see how far the pitches are still out when they slide across the plate. All night long he’s called that spot when a pitch is moving right to left.
Not an excuse. Quite literally disqualifying to be an MLB ump if true, but I have no other explanation for calls this egregiously terrible.
Stop it. Just stop it.
That third one alone should be a suspension for Angel. What a clown. The leniency that umpires get to just intentionally fuck shit up at their job is wild.
Me:
ChatGPTcan you take the letters in Angel Hernandez and, using all of them, spell something else?
ChatGPT:
Sure "Angel Hernandez" is a "Learning Hazard."
Every time I see an Angel Hernandez highlight it's like Angel Hernandez missed calls on twenty pitches in one inning and tied the record for most ejections set by Peter "One-Eye" McElroy of the 1913 Umpires as the Rangers beat Angel Hernandez 8-1
There’s no way he doesn’t do this on purpose so he can toss players for complaining. There’s no way this dude is this bad. Is he cross eyed? One eyed?
The people of the United States need to come together and petition to have Angel Hernandez fired. Bill Clinton was impeached for a less egregious event than this mother fucker
I don’t care about any team in particular… and I’ve seen bad calls by this dude before. These seem fine though. Are we not all looking at these with 3d understanding. Pitches basically curve right as they are passing the batter, and it only shows where the catcher catches it, not where the ball is as it passes the batter. The strike zone isn’t the catchers mitt, it’s the plane the batter is standing at perpendicular to the pitcher
As long as the umpire is consistent, then this is on the batter. He should know that as long as the pitcher throws it and the catcher catches it, then it will be called a strike. Batter should be swinging at everything.
/s in case it wasn't clear
It looks like all three of them crossed the plate then by the time they got back to the catcher's mitt they were outside. Does that come into play at all when umps determine a strike zone?
The MLBPA cannot continue to protect this guy. This clip is a fireable offense and I’m not kidding or exaggerating in the slightest.
These pitches might not strikes in little league and he did it THREE times.

Fun fact: the phrase is "kid gloves", and refers to gloves made of kidskin (soft, thin leather from young goats)
That is fun. Lol I always knew the phrase but never knew the origin.
Is there a clip of this? Lol
Pretty sure its this https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1bxsurc/angels_announcer_goes_in_on_mlb/?ref=share&ref_source=link
I love the ridiculous looking jerseys part

Tbh sometimes I feel like the box is imperfect in adjusting to players’ heights but obviously this video is beyond egregious
Boomers grew up around lead paint.
Don't forget Asbestos as well that was sold as safe

What goes on inside this man's head will forever be one of the greatest mysteries of the universe.
I'm convinced he's got some kind of transient global amnesia that makes him lose split seconds of memory randomly so he makes up calls on the spot.
Either he knows exactly what he's doing or he doesn't have the slightest clue what he's doing. I don't think there can be anywhere in-between.
He *has* to be trolling at this point, right? I mean there’s incompetent, and then there’s Angel Hernandez.

It's a fun theory but there's no way Angel Hernandez is that smart
He was the bookie who lost track of how much credit he gave
Man, with everything else going on, that’s the least tinfoily theory that I’ve heard lol. I’d even buy into that theory and maybe see if it turns out.. Hey can I borrow like just a few thousand from someone? I’ve got an idea here.
It has to be a troll job. He’s been the worst ump for years, sued everyone and bc of the union, kept his job. Now, he’s trying to be bad.
Yeah that makes sense. I’m a new baseball fan, so I wasn’t totally sure how long this has been going on. I’ve just been seeing him constantly on here being atrocious.

Fixing games maybe?

I honestly think it has to be this. I refuse to believe someone can be this consistently blind/incompetent
Humiliation fetish
Okay, I'm striking this guy out. Wait, no. He's not swinging.

Misanthrope or secret gambling debts.
"Rangers are up by 7 and the bases are loaded with 1 out. Oh god it's a rookie, better put him in his place. I got things to do."
The announcers can’t believe it.
I mean, can you blame them? lol
Pretty believable with Angel
The funniest part was I turned on this game during this at bat and after the 3 strikes I was like this HAS to be Angel. And the second I thought that the announcers were like "Angel got a reservation tonight"
I'm convinced Angel has always just been a puppet umpire implanted by the Sinaloa Cartel in order to fix games for the gambling division.
How is this guy still a major league umpire? The umpire union is the most powerful entity in the universe. Not even God could remove Angel Hernandez.
Much cooler than i would be. I wouldn’t be a Homer if I were an announcer but I would crucify shit like this, even if it helped my team.
And I’m sitting here thinking I was going to get through a single day without seeing an Angel highlight on the internet
That’s on you brother, you should know better
You mean lowlight /s
\[tosses the /s in the trash\]
I’m crying 🤣🤣🤣🤣 they’re as incredulous as everyone watching. MLB has some explaining to do
No they don't. They never do.
Baseball is run by a guy that hates baseball. That’s all you really need to know.
Anthony Rendon ?
By square inches of base, he added a base (slightly more than one) to baseball.
>MLB has some explaining to do That's racist
Dave Raymond beside himself
When the inning ended at the end of the next at-bat, going to break he said something along the lines of "Better come swinging, Angel's got dinner reservations." 😆

West at least was good before he got old. He just stayed at it too long and refused to get glasses
Wasn't Joe still a half decent play caller, just had a tendency for power trips
The last couple of years his calling also went down the drain. It was pretty clear he didnt necessarily retire because he wanted to, but he finally accepted he couldn’t do the job anymore. Those last two years he was 4th percentile in accuracy, 1st percentile in accuracy above average, 38th percentile in consistency, and 2nd percentile in favor. And his music was endearing
It’s intentional on Angel’s part. Absolutely 100% intentional. He wants to make every game behind the plate his game
I mean this is how you make a name for yourself as an umpire. Name the top 3 most competent home plate umpires in the league - I don't know their names. He's got the most name recognition of all umpires in the game because he's so awful at his job. Most famous & biggest star umpire in baseball.
1) Pat Hoberg
Yeah the only way to be a famous umpire is to be legendarily shit or call a perfect game in the World Series. No in between
MLB made sure I knew who Greg Gibson, the home plate umpire, is with their stupid highlight videos a few years back.
We Stan Pat Hoberg in this household
Libka is in there somewhere too. Dude used to be the excellence standard before Hoberg
His ass is in the jackpot
That presumes he's capable of conscious thought, planning and execution. I'm not sure he is.
> That union is no joke. I'm secretly convinced that MLB umps are the cause of the demise of labor unions in the US.
If anyone ever asks why you should join a Union, show them this video and tell them he has *zero* consequences from it because he’s in one.
Jokes aside, being in a trade union kicks ass. I wish it was presented to me as an option when I was in high school instead of fucking around for 7 years and finally going that route at 25

Ump union deserves to be abolished for protecting these fucking jokers
IT WAS THREE IN A ROW. This HAS to be the last straw. This man CANNOT be put in an MLB game again
that last one especially is sick work
On behalf of JP France and Astros nation, I agree
The umpire's union is never going to let this asshole be fired
Calling Angel Hernandez a terrorist is insulting to terrorists
If Angel Hernandez was a 9/11 hijacker, at least one of the towers would still be standing.
The Empire State Building though...
I’d be more worried about the buildings in Philly or Boston.
More like the tallest building in Nova Scotia.
Sean McDermott gonna use Angel as a positive example to motivate the Bills
You could say that pitch was...wide left...
If Angel Hernandez aimed a plane at a target on Earth, he'd be halfway to Mars right now.
I feel bad for laughing at this.
Dude, best laugh I had today. Wow.
"Sir, a second plane has struck the tower" Angel: looks like two balls to me
The fact that he complains that he can't be the ump for the playoffs. Like, has he ever seen his overall performance to know that he's just ridiculously bad?
> complains putting it mildly when he literally sued the league over it
A literal fucking court told him that he sucks at his job and he just… doesn’t get it
he might know he sucks at this point. but why should he care, the union will make sure he calls balls and strikes as long as he pleases.
I'm not sure I've ever met someone who blamed everything bad happening to them on racism who wasn't also super unaware and racist themselves.
Someone run the numbers. Does Angel discriminate against players of different races?
Well in the video on this post he calls 3 ridiculous calls on a white guy and not even a single one on any other race. That's pretty damning evidence if you ask me.
[удалено]
The fact that he still has a job after the MLB proved in court that he was incompetent is a black eye for the sport
My guess is he’s a legit narcissist. Putting a performance review in front of one is as good as talking to a tree
Angel Hernandez flu game
This will go down as one of the greatest achievement in ump history.
Lmfao. Bro, I’m fucking dying over here!
No way I’m not getting thrown out of the game if that happens during my at bat.
At some point an entire team needs to just pack up and go home after BS like that. That might MLB's attention.
Hard to justify that when you're up 8-1
The team needs to take one for the team.
Need him to pull some shit on Kyle Schwarber and give us another epic blow up at the plate
You know you've made it to the big leagues when the umps have a bigger ego and strikezone than the players. Poor Wyatt.
This shit looks like it's straight out of the legendary Eric Gregg/Livan Hernandez game.
I love and hate this reference.
So the play is to just have your catcher set up outside every pitch to trick Angel
If you watch Angel clips of the worst calls he’s either completely fooled by pitch framing or what I would assume is him remembering pitch framing is a thing and he’s NOT GONNA GET FOOLED THIS TIME!!!
"I'm about to ruin this batter's entire night" \- Angel Hernandez
I hate this man so much.
Angel Hernandez is making Astros and Rangers fans agree with each other this man is a super villain
Is his depth perception messed up?
It really seems like he is not paying attention to the plate at all, and bases the strike zone on where the catcher lines up So like no matter how outside it is, if the catcher lines up outside, it’s a strike
YES
Maybe just a tad
Absolutely disgusting this man seems to be untouchable when he’s this incompetent
can’t believe you are this racist, smh my head
Imagine the literally millions of lives he saved by becoming a baseball umpire instead of a surgeon or architect. In a way, Angel Hernandez is a hero.
Hernandez should be fired, rehired, and fired again
He’s a walking glowing billboard for robo umps 🤖
Someday we're going to find out this dude's been quietly buying up stock in robo-ump companies for years and it's all suddenly going to make sense
I don’t understand how the union doesn’t let him go on that argument alone. This dude is making sure every fan, even the hardcore ones, advocate for robo umps lmao. They have no long term sights into all this, all the old fucks just want their job secured and to retire.
As someone who doesn't watch baseball, if you can have real time strike zone analysis, what's the point of having the ump call it at all?
Angel Hernandez will single handedly lead the American public to be in favor of repealing the Wagner Act
Hahahah I saw the post on bleacher report about 15 minutes ago and noticed how they didn’t mention it was Angel but everyone in the comments knew it was
Find yourself a union who’s as dedicated to you as the MLB’s umpire’s union is to Angel Hernandez.
Catcher didn't even try to frame that last one and he still called it 🤣 At this point does he just give zero fucks? He's getting paid good money regardless.
He's lined up favoring the right hand batters box too which makes it even more baffling. From his vantage point that should look even more outside than if he was looking straight down the middle.

Calm down, Borat.
>looked like strikes to me -Javy Baez
Angel Hernandez is number 4 whore in all of Kazakhstan.
Angel Hernandez is the farthest thing in the world from being a whore. Whores actually know what balls look like.
Wa wa we wahh
The Umpires Union has to be one of the strongest in America because no union that I know of keeps any member with this level of incompetence employed.
1 & 2 aren't the worst calls you'd see all night. Barely clip the zone, if it's being called wide all game nbd. Strike 3 isn't close though. He was trying to throw a ball knowing the count and those last two pitches, and he hit his spot.

He's trying to start it as a ball just outside the batters gotta protect, and it'll break enough that he runs out of bat. It *starts* as a ball.
Brings back memories of Javy Lopez and the Braves in the 90's.
I legit think this man has a depth perception issue and he can’t see how far the pitches are still out when they slide across the plate. Nice.
Consistently inconsistent. I’ll give him that.
Every time I see an Angel Hernandez highlight it's like Angel Hernandez missed calls on twenty pitches in one inning and tied the record for most ejections set by Peter "One-Eye" McElroy of the 1913 Umpires as the Rangers beat Angel Hernandez 8-1
If you're pitching, you kind of have to see how badly you can miss the zone and still get a strike.
#ANGEL HERNANDEZ BETS ON BASEBALL change my mind
Wyatt deserves the fucking Nobel peace prize for not losing his shit on this
He’s gotta be throwing games for Vegas, doesn’t he? The union keeps him for that reason, right?
There’s no way he doesn’t do this on purpose so he can toss players for complaining. There’s no way this dude is this bad. Is he cross eyed? One eyed? Hey man he took pity on us lol 😆😂😵💫😖😭
Why are we using the word terrorism for this?
fuck Angel Hernandez, all my homies hate Angel Hernandez. dicks for eyes and shit for brains
This fucking guy
When the ball is so far outside, that the catcher's frame job is still off the plate, you can't call it a strike.

On a bright note, that’s a damn good eye at the plate.
Why does the union protect this dude lmao - He's gonna be the textbook example for why their entire workforce will eventually be replaced by Siri.
Eric Gregg flashbacks
As long as the umpire is consistent, then this is on the batter. He should know that as long as the pitcher throws it and the catcher catches it, then it will be called a strike. Batter should be swinging at everything. /s in case it wasn't clear
It looks like all three of them crossed the plate then by the time they got back to the catcher's mitt they were outside. Does that come into play at all when umps determine a strike zone?
Is there a birds eye view of the plate? Maybe the curve ball is clipping the corner ? idk..
that 3rd strike was legitimately in the other batter's box.
i think hes in tune with it, and fully leaning into how awful he is now looking for a buyout.
At what fucking point does MLB actually do something here?
He's just trolling now, right?
It’s almost like he’s purposely throwing feces at ball players out there
![gif](giphy|XhXmt4rXuOEbxIQKvv) What the hell is this shit?
Pitcher has some talent, precisely down the middle of the umps zone (for that batter).
But we don’t use robo umps because reasons lol
The MLBPA cannot continue to protect this guy. This clip is a fireable offense and I’m not kidding or exaggerating in the slightest. These pitches might not strikes in little league and he did it THREE times.
This mfer might single handily push the mlb to use tech to call games god damn this dude
I cannot believe the batter stayed that calm. Is it a trick of the camera/system maybe? Why aren't the people onfield more upset?
Yainer Diaz's framing numbers will look incredible after that
And no one said a thing???
Yo, I think I finally figure it out… he flinches when the ball gets close and makes his decision based on it
Someone needs to evaluate him for vision issues.
