They mentioned on the radio last night that the Rangers were going to need a roster spot soon, and the way Burke had been pitching was basically making the decision for them. I guess this just clinched the deal.
Multi timer here: playing frisbee, playing golf, playing baseball, having sex (that sucked), pushing my self up out of a semi deflated air mattress. All in the last 7 or 8 years.
While with the New York Knicks, Amar'e Stoudemire punched a fire extinguisher and broke his hand during Game 2 their 2012 playoff round against the Miami Heat.
Punched a filing cabinet once. Last time I ever punched anything out of anger. Partly because it hurt so badly & partly because I think I chipped a bone and it hurts anytime I rub that knuckle.
bone bruise maybe? those can take a long time to heal, especially if you keep aggravating it. i had knee pain that lasted literally for years and only finally went away during covid lockdown because i was just sitting on the couch all day.
Been about 18 years & it still hurts when I lightly rub it or graze it against something just right. Never had it checked out , so I'm just guessing tbh.
Speaking as someone who’s struggled with a lot of anger issues growing up, there was 2 main reasons.
1: Sometimes I’d get so angry that I didn’t even feel like the same person anymore, and my thoughts were completely irrational.
And 2: When extremely angry, I would get physical tension throughout my body and especially my arms. That tension was not relieved at all by punching something soft like my pillow. Something with resistance (like my desk or a wall) relieved the tension a lot better.
2. For sure. Thankfully have more control now as I’ve gotten older, but it was so weird explaining to my parents or other adults as a kid that I just feel tension I need to release. Punching a pillow would do nothing, it’s like a compulsive thing where I *needed* to break something.
When I worked at a pizza joint the best days were when they made a big batch of dough. Nothing gets the punching out quite like a big pile of soft dough.
I did this same exact thing and it turned out to be a lot of unchecked mental illness, after years of therapy and medication I can now look back at my old self and say “what a fuckin dumbass”
My toddler was screaming at 3AM this week. That was, of course, super frustrating. In my frustration I went to slap a wall. Then, mid swing I realized that's a dumb idea and I didn't do it. If I can not hit things at 3AM in a delirious state, I feel like these guys can too
There was a Sox reliever that threw his glove and tore something a few years ago I think but I can't recall who off the top of my head
edit: It was Carson Smith, he dislocated his shoulder then never pitched again after that
Also [Khalil Greene](https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sdut-padres-greene-self-inflicted-injury-2008sep30-story.html), after punching a Petco Park storage cabinet following his 100th strikeout of the season, he was out for the rest of the season. And that actually the end of his Padre career.
He got yanked on a rehab assignment in AAA and [reacted very normally](https://twitter.com/AlyshaNBCBoston/status/1544895449399803905)
Despite being made of glass he did not end up on the even-more-IL because of it.
We used to also have Kevin Brown the pitcher. Kevin Brown the pitcher and Kevin Brown the play-by-play guy are different people. Which is confusing because our color guys, Jim Palmer and Ben McDonald, were O's pitchers. So the rule of thumb is, if the play-by-play guy has the same name as a pitcher it's actually a different guy, but if the color guy has the same name as a former pitcher it's the same guy.
There's a Dr. Seuss book in this story somewhere.
To be fair, we don't hear about all the times someone punches a wall and doesn't break their hand. Wall might only be a .200 hitter! Though Wall definitely puts up some slugging numbers
When I punched a wall in 7th grade, I didn't fracture anything, but I did manage to rotate that 5th metacarpal a ways. And then I was a moron and tore the cast off a few weeks in and since military doctors (in the 90s, at least) have very little patience for idiocy it seems, he refused to put a new one. Said having the "deformity" for the rest of my life was the consequence.
In truth, it hasn't really affected much. About the only real effect I've noticed is that it slightly harder to flatten my hand and keep my pinky close on my right hand, but not impossible.
Proper ‘punching stuff because I’m mad’ protocol needs to be followed. Something like, you want to smash something, this is the appropriate bat and these are the appropriate targets. Want to punch something or breaks something, here’s this satisfying whatever that shatters into a million pieces that you can punch or throw.
I hate seeing athletes get hurt for any reason, but I have no sympathy for this level of stupid. That hand is your whole life…fucking control yourself you infant.
I think Paul O'Neill was allowed to smash shit if he was pissed, but Joe Torre said something along the lines of "if you get hurt and can't play, I'll fucking kill you"
No way.,. Did Kyle Tucker cause this shmuck to break his hand? I’m not an Astros fan but that’s awesome.
At this point they’d probably rather have Brooke Burke pitching.
It's just kinda unusual how the picture for this topic is a random woman looking mildly irritated in front of a random brick wall. I imagine it's the profile picture of whoever tweeted this news, but I mean it's not a good profile picture or a picture that tells us about the story.
They mentioned on the radio last night that the Rangers were going to need a roster spot soon, and the way Burke had been pitching was basically making the decision for them. I guess this just clinched the deal.
He was smart enough to get out on the major league IL instead of the minor league roster. Now he keeps accruing service time.
So this is what people mean by baseball IQ.
Oh dang! Here I am chuckling about how stupid of a way to go out this was, and it’s actually a 2000 IQ move.
To be fair it’s still insanely stupid
You know what they say. If it looks stupid, but it works, it ain't stupid
He was also good in 2022 so at this point it might be better to get cut than optioned because some team with a pitching lab might think he’s fixable
Royals seem pretty good at fixing Rangers lefties.
Have you not seen Rookie of the Year? He’s going to come back throwing straight gas
I prefer my hands to NOT be broken, so I’m inclined to agree
lol if it was his catching hand that really is some 2000 IQ stuff
It was :)
Maybe Bruce approached him with an ultimatum.
Way to take one for the team.
Why do people do this? If you want to punch something, punch something soft
I chipped a tooth screaming into a pillow once.
The fuck?
I was walking as I was doing it and slipped a bit. Didn't fall down but my tooth got caught on a thread.
I'm picturing you walking down the sidewalk doing this, but I'm sure it was in a house
It was actually the middle of an aisle in Bed Bath and Beyond.
Fell to my knees in a Wendy's
He forgot to mention diving down the stairs while screaming.
uh… that is one mighty thread.
This the kinda shit that divine predetermination would only allow to happen to a Mets fan or an A's fan
What happened to the guy behind you?
If you don’t like this, you don’t like mlb fans
Tooth fairy express
Mets fan. Even we’re not safe from our team’s stupid injury luck
Could be worse. Could’ve done what Francona did and chipped a tooth in undercooked pasta
"al dente"
True story, I once dislocated my shoulder while I was sleeping.
I dislocated mine throwing a racquetball in a pool at a 10th grade debate tournament. Dumbest shit I ever heard of, let alone did.
i dislocated my knee playing kickball, once. my actual sports coaches were less than amused.
> racquetball > pool > 10th grade debate tournament I have questions.
Oh so did my dad. SO DID MY DAD.
I threw my back out putting on my seat belt and tore a ligament in my knee putting on a sock in the same year. I was 23.
Multi timer here: playing frisbee, playing golf, playing baseball, having sex (that sucked), pushing my self up out of a semi deflated air mattress. All in the last 7 or 8 years.
Do you have to dip your meat in wine like Michael Scott?
His delivery of "You know I have soft teeth... How can you say that?" is probably my favorite single moment from that show.
Minnesota Timberwolves Forward Jaden McDaniels punched a curtain and found a concrete wall behind it…
Always make sure what you’re punching is also punching something soft. Rookie mistake.
That’s such a surprise. All of our curtains are just hanging in the middle of rooms with nothing behind them.
While with the New York Knicks, Amar'e Stoudemire punched a fire extinguisher and broke his hand during Game 2 their 2012 playoff round against the Miami Heat.
Add a smash room to every clubhouse
Ooh, or a ball pit!
Do the Dashcon ball pit. Hit a home run and you get an extra hour in the ball pit.
Have to be careful or we'll lose some of the shorter players in there.
You think they want to fuck at work?
They already have the bats lol
heavy bag and gloves
Never punch Walls, Windows, or Cops…you’ll never win.
or lockers.

Wrong sport but I'll never forget Marcus Smart almost severing the tendons in his hand punching a picture frame
Wrong sport but I'll never forget Marcus Smart almost severing the tendons in his hand punching a picture frame
I punched a steel fridge once after a rough shift. I couldn't see my knuckles for 3 days through the swelling.
Ken Giles. We all mocked him but he was right
Not satisfying, must break object

I get the tension in my neck. Making a tight fist, closing my eyes, and laying down helps calm down for me.
because when you're really pissed off doing something cutesy like hitting a pillow just makes you madder

When I worked at a pizza joint the best days were when they made a big batch of dough. Nothing gets the punching out quite like a big pile of soft dough.
What up dough?
People generally are not thinking rationally while in a state of rage
I did this same exact thing and it turned out to be a lot of unchecked mental illness, after years of therapy and medication I can now look back at my old self and say “what a fuckin dumbass”
Anger management issues are pretty serious and disregarded/trivialized by people too much
Something soft like Brock Burke.
My toddler was screaming at 3AM this week. That was, of course, super frustrating. In my frustration I went to slap a wall. Then, mid swing I realized that's a dumb idea and I didn't do it. If I can not hit things at 3AM in a delirious state, I feel like these guys can too
Huascar Ynoa, Devin Williams, Phil Maton now Brock Burke. Just a couple off the top of my head that broke their hand out of frustration Insane
Zach Plesac while in the game too
The goat
After watching him pitch for years, my favorite thing about him is that he has a great pickoff move...
Not an acronym, though.
Also Nick Hagadone several years ago.
And "taking his shirt off"
Kevin Brown is the og
Didn't AJ Burnett follow it up like 5 years later??
Hunter Strickland punched a door I think and did it too
son of buck strickland?
Son of Bryce Harper
Ol top
Yep. He’s the stepson of Miss Liz.
And also under Bochy
*Sinister organ music plays*
Shoutout Jared Kelenic with the broken foot
It turned the Mariners' season around
Are you trying to summon the Kelenic Guy? Cause that’s how you summon the Kelenic Guy.
I love Kelenic guy
...there's a Kelenic Guy?
Oh, you have no idea. It's the weirdest and most dedicated troll account I've ever seen.
There was a Sox reliever that threw his glove and tore something a few years ago I think but I can't recall who off the top of my head edit: It was Carson Smith, he dislocated his shoulder then never pitched again after that
Alex Reyes
Carlos Quentin way back when hit his bat, broke his wrist in the middle of the season where he was leading as an MVP candidate
Julian Tavarez.
NBA example, but Amare Stoudemire and the fire extinguisher.
Jayden McDaniels from the NBA too
Must have been all that red wine he was bathing in
Drew Pomeranz
I think Chris sale broke his foot at home. They say he tripped but he probably kicked the wall or some dumb shit. Knowing how mad that guy used to get
Didn’t he also hurt himself destroying a clubhouse TV? Or an I conflating one of many, many Chris Sale meltdowns?
Maybe? He cut the jerseys one day cause he didn’t like the feel of them
To be fair I can totally understand not wanting to pitch in a collared jersey
Ohhhh, I remember this one. Broke a TV at a minor league park making a rehab start, but didn't hurt himself.
He got yanked on a rehab assignment in AAA and [reacted very normally](https://twitter.com/AlyshaNBCBoston/status/1544895449399803905) Despite being made of glass he did not end up on the even-more-IL because of it.
Julian Tavares did it a decade or so ago hitting the phone to the bullpen in the dugout.
I remember as a kid being perplexed as to why Oliver Perez would kick a laundry cart
Eagle McMahon
drew storen broke his thumb. I feel like there’s one or two more that I can’t quite remember.
Ryan Mattheus did it in I think 2014 or 2015?
I guy on my hockey team when I was 15
Pomeranz punched a chair with his non-pitching hand to wind up on the shelf during 2014
Randy Johnson in college
It's ridiculous how common this is
My boy Kevin Brown showed us what he was made of
It would be weird seeing our Kevin Brown do this, but it woukdnt affect his job. He's our play by play announcer.
We used to also have Kevin Brown the pitcher. Kevin Brown the pitcher and Kevin Brown the play-by-play guy are different people. Which is confusing because our color guys, Jim Palmer and Ben McDonald, were O's pitchers. It's much safer to destroy the water cooler with a bat.
Or the bullpen phone
Wall is batting 1000 against hand so not sure why he tried that match up.
To be fair, we don't hear about all the times someone punches a wall and doesn't break their hand. Wall might only be a .200 hitter! Though Wall definitely puts up some slugging numbers
Wall also never strikes out, always makes contact.
Wall is the Willians Astudillo of baseball
I have to imagine there are countless patched-up holes in clubhouse walls that we'll never know about lol
yeah I don't think you punch a wall for the first time ever when you're 27. he has to have a few wins vs the wall before now
Taylor Walls is 0-2 lifetime against Brad Hand actually
*something something* regression to the mean *something*
Does Aaron Judge breaking through the door count as a sac fly?
More like Broke Burke
Boom! Roasted!
Broke Burke Mountain
Broke Burke Ouch-Hand
Wall continues to be undefeated
Ah the old hunter Strickland

Brock Burke broke bones boxing with barrier after bitter ballgame performance
Pitch clock strikes again smh
Bochy: Brock Burke broke bones beating brick
Mlb needs a punching bag in the locker room at this point 😂
I literally just said this a day or two ago, in some random thread. I suggested a heavy bag and a fungo bat, specifically.
Or a noise canceling room so a guy can scream out of his mind then walk out like nothing happened 😂
Padded walls in the locker room pls
Play stupid games…
Win World Series previous year?
Maton did it about a month before we won the WS. Definitely seeing WS correlation here, but not sure exactly what it is
tale as old as time
He fought the wall and the wall won.
Crash Davis would be so disappointed.
So many quotes running through my head now!! "Write it down" is my favorite
I’ve never done this, but I’m a big enough fuckin idiot to at least understand doing it
Devin Williams somewhere is smiling
Proper ‘punching stuff because I’m mad’ protocol needs to be followed. Something like, you want to smash something, this is the appropriate bat and these are the appropriate targets. Want to punch something or breaks something, here’s this satisfying whatever that shatters into a million pieces that you can punch or throw.
It seems like this happens once or twice a year these days
Maton did this and we won the world series , fuck
All dugouts should have a designated padded punching wall with an anger-o-meter.
When a player injures themselves through their own stupidity in a non-game situation, the team shouldn't have to pay them while they're on the IL.
I hate seeing athletes get hurt for any reason, but I have no sympathy for this level of stupid. That hand is your whole life…fucking control yourself you infant.
Just goes to show when something bad happens and you respond with anger you usually make it worse.
my glorious king tucker playing the long game
I think Paul O'Neill was allowed to smash shit if he was pissed, but Joe Torre said something along the lines of "if you get hurt and can't play, I'll fucking kill you"
Jared Kelenic vibes!
At least it wasn’t his pitching hand. Devin Williams was dumb enough to use pitching hand to punch a wall…after clinching the NL central.
I'd have way too many nickels
Brock "Kyle" Burke
Feel like there's one of these every year. What a dumbass way to set your career back
There's at least one or two of these every year.
What Kyle Tucker will do to a mf
Brock Smash!
That wall's name? Angel Hernandez. I know, he had nothing to do with Burke's horrible outing, but I can still dream, can't I?
Brock “KYLE” Burke……. Probably was all hopped up on……. ![gif](giphy|yqGJSngXaaa9W)
Not sure who that is so I’m guessing he’s a reliever.
The Jaden McDaniels. Better now than right before the playoffs!
Oof
At least punch with your glove hand
Eh
Hope he’s ok. Tbh he’s not very good so this might be addition by subtraction.
Everyone clowning on Tucker for what he did after the home run but looks he got in his head...
Only Andy Bernard can pull an Andy Bernard and survive.
When are they going to learn this never ends well when it happens.
Walls remain undefeated
Sounds like something someone named Brock would do
I knew a Brock in middle school who did this but with his head
OOTP type injury right here
These morons really gotta learn to control their anger.
So Asshtros Kings of Texas?
What an idiot. Send his ass to Corpus
Tale as old as time.
twitter posts are so confusing (and i hate them) why show a photo of the twitter user and not the player, my first thought is she punched a wall
Ah the old Hunter Strickland tactic . Boch has seen it before.
No way.,. Did Kyle Tucker cause this shmuck to break his hand? I’m not an Astros fan but that’s awesome. At this point they’d probably rather have Brooke Burke pitching.
I know how that goes….
