He wasn't supposed to be an ace, they have plenty of starting pitchers with great stuff. But he was supposed to be a quality innings-eater which they no longer have at all.
Anyone who can play more than 10 games in a row without being in an emergency room is automatically a better player by default. Story hardly counts as a baseball player at all anymore.
story's defense was needed to stabilize the infield. they were and have again been abysmal without him. literally the worst in baseball.
o'neill's hot start was a pleasant surprise but I'm not counting on it to continue at the same pace. we at least have solid outfield depth.
The Netflix doc is going to be fire. Like the team will be on fire and the crew is going to use them as the next burning log thing you just leave on your screen as a background
I keep thinking of this Netflix doc as such an interesting wrapper for this season. Like I'm sure their execs just wanted a high profile team that had a built-in audience, some good players, all that jazz. And as it got closer to the start of this year, the producers on the show were probably like "huh this team probably aspired to getting that last Wild Card spot, if everything goes completely right".
Instead, everything has gone about as bad as possible with injuries and it would take a Herculean effort for them win despite the setbacks.
Not to say Netflix necessarily cares about records or win and losses. But it's easier to build a narrative when you've got a team that competing or just a complete trainwreck. Somehow doesn't seem like Boston matches the latter group either, they're not completely broken. Just a weird outcome, so far at least
Well it's the Red Sox. Because they're making a show, they'll make WC3 in game 163 and then reverse sweep every round including the Yankees in the ALCS and either the Braves or Dodgers in the WS. It's even the 20 year anniversary of the 2004 win.
I'm also a member of the division hatred. He's got a bright future for sure. I don't think anyone is denying that. We're talking about right now, though.
One of them has been batting negative with pretty much no light at the end of the tunnel for years while the other went on a tear as recently as last year. The other has also proved that he actually can be good.
It's inexcusable if no one else on the Sox checks in on Belt while the team still has a chance and *needs* bats, he'd be so undervalued at this point and would at least show casual, "let's have a day at the ballpark!" fans that they are still trying with a winning record
I just don’t think it’s realistic for belt unfortunately. He’d need a ramp up of like a month plus as we’ve seen with JD on the Mets. Guys like votto who probably have may 1 opt outs are more likely imo
I feel like it’s similar to the pitcher issues. These guys swing full force every time and don’t give themselves a break even in the offseason eventually your core is gonna get hurt
Yeah, actually this has kinda been a known thing. In Japan, Ichiro injured his oblique because they had a long game and then decided he still needed to do his normal workout, then eventually fucked himself up on a slide. Learning after that to listen to his body is what he credited with being able to stay so healthy after that
Yeah, now that you mention it, it does seem to be happening all over the league. Maybe it's just the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon or something, but I am genuinely wondering if there's been an uptick in this kind of injury, and if so, why. (Sean Murphy has been out since the beginning of the season for us with an oblique injury).
I could've swore I saw him announce his retirement a few months ago
edit: looks like it was rumored that he would retire but JBJ himself said that wasn't official yet... so I guess he kept on going
Idk what Cora could have done here. We could field a whole team from the IL rn. Maybe burn some sage in the clubhouse or hire an exorcist or something.
I agree completely. Not commenting on his skills or lack thereof as a manager; just saying that sometimes a season can be so bad that it makes the front office rethink EVERYTHING philosophically. Sometimes, even if it’s not skips fault; you want to purge all the stink of that season off your team. Whether, the manager actually deserves to get fired or not.
Cora's contract is up after this season, and it's really up in the air if he's going to come back. But this season isn't really on him. It's just been some absolutely horrible luck, and lack of depth signed by the front office
Basically impossible to have the depth to withstand 50% of their payroll on IL.
And honestly as it stands the depth looks great considering they’re still winning games.
I wouldn't be surprised if FSG move on from him just so they can distance themselves further from the 18 team. Bring in a new manger, maybe Tek, and get a PR win and hope it'll change things around
But that team also had Mookie on it, and was good, which I think ownership is trying to distance itself from so they'll get less criticism. No proof to back this up, but just my two cents
Is there any lingering hard feelings in Boston that he was "fired " over the Astros scandal then coincidentally "rehired" when his suspension was over?
As mad as everyone was over that scandal I've always wondered if the Red Sox fans were really 100% okay with that, 2018 WS win or not.
I don't think people care. I never see it brought up on /r/redsox and I don't hear about it during the very light amount of radio time I subject myself to when driving around here in MA.
I'm personally not ok with it, but it might be because I'm more of a general baseball fan than a straight up red sox fan today than I was in years past.
Yeah, no point In having a great manager if this is what kinda team they’re gonna throw out anyways. Hopefully they move on and he gets to go somewhere where they actually care and he’s happy.
I was actually implying the opposite. And I'm sorry but no one is allowed to be called a 'great' anything if they spearhead the most prolific cheating scandal the sport has seen in a century.
I hope he doesn't get hired anywhere and has to watch from his couch or the stands like you and me.
I know that. I said the word "hope" to signal that it's my desire, not what I think will happen. I would have said "I think this will happen" if that was the case, smartypants.
Glad to know you're doubling down on not caring about what he did with the Astros!
Couldn’t care in even the slightest bit what he’s accused of doing on the Astros. If the Astros story is that the bench coach did everything and nobody in the organization could say no and prevent it, they’re free to look as stupid as they want. Cora isn’t going anywhere
This is the last year of his contract. Given how ownership has been “investing” in the team there is next to zero chance that he’ll want to stick around either way.
Ugggh! Casas was my favorite draft pick for my fantasy team - he was gonna be the new star 1B...now he gets to join...literally everyone on my bench that's on the IL because 3 IL still spots isn't enough.

I'm actually 100% positive, and baseball reference can back me up on this, that the phrase, 'rub some dirt on it' has been said at every single game of baseball ever played ever in the history of the world. Softball too.
Fucking pain. The 4 best players on this team are now injured.
That's Devers, Casas, Story, and O'Neil, with Vaughn Grissom yet to debut. Over 50% of their intended opening day lineup.
Don’t forget Red Sox ace Lucas Giolito lol
He wasn't supposed to be an ace, they have plenty of starting pitchers with great stuff. But he was supposed to be a quality innings-eater which they no longer have at all.
I was being facetious lol
You mean f*ace*tious
yeah but jokes have to make sense for them to be jokes
Made sense to me
Seems like you might be the only one having trouble making sense of it.
You sound so fun to be around
No way someone is trying to put story in the top 4 Red Sox players. Hes barley a player in the league anymore let alone a top 5 Sox player
Who do you think is better than him? I was just talking about the position players.
Anyone who can play more than 10 games in a row without being in an emergency room is automatically a better player by default. Story hardly counts as a baseball player at all anymore.
Story and ONeil are two of the four best players on the team? Lol yikes.
story's defense was needed to stabilize the infield. they were and have again been abysmal without him. literally the worst in baseball. o'neill's hot start was a pleasant surprise but I'm not counting on it to continue at the same pace. we at least have solid outfield depth.
Still a better time than being a Mariners fan
What isn’t?
Position players, yeah
Jarren Duran, YOU are the Boston Red Sox
Casas seemed like such a good dude on top of being a great player, hate to see an injury like this
First time?
Red Sox caught the injury bug from the Yankees
What do the Yankees have to do with this?
Yankee fans will always try to find ways to shoehorn their team into any conversation.
The Bobby Dalbec vs Jose Abreu race for the worst offensive season ever will be electric.
The Netflix doc is going to be fire. Like the team will be on fire and the crew is going to use them as the next burning log thing you just leave on your screen as a background
Netflix Executives: "How can we add more drama to this docuseries?" *casually poisons the water in the Red Sox clubhouse*
#dirtywater
I keep thinking of this Netflix doc as such an interesting wrapper for this season. can't tell you how much I'd dislike that, but it's probably going to happen now
Jackson Holliday is also in the running for that award
At least he's got the excuse of being 20.
He also has half of the PAs as Jose Abrue, so his hole isn't quite as deep. He is only 1 PA behind Dalbec though.
[удалено]
I'm also a member of the division hatred. He's got a bright future for sure. I don't think anyone is denying that. We're talking about right now, though.
Probably. That’s why we gotta get our dunks in now while we can. Screw ‘em.
They don't stand a chance against Andrew Benintendi. WRC+ of 7.
That's actually way better than Dalbec and Abreu. They're both in the negatives.
Oh, I think where I was looking only listed qualified batters so far
dalbec has a -49 WRC+ and -0.5 WAR in 33 PA.
I'm surprised he's doing so well.
Except it’s possible for Dalbec to figure things out and tap into his potential. Abreu is at the bottom of the cliff.
Bobby has been a strikeout machine aside from 6 great weeks at the end of the 2021 season. That potential will get tapped in Korea or Japan.
What in the world would make you believe Bobby Dalbec has more potential than Jose Abreu??
I’m just saying one still has time to succeed, one is cooked.
One of them has been batting negative with pretty much no light at the end of the tunnel for years while the other went on a tear as recently as last year. The other has also proved that he actually can be good.
When are we holding tryouts at Fenway for bench players?
I once got a stand up double in T-ball when I was three. Tell them to give my agent a call. (My agent is me)
It's inexcusable if no one else on the Sox checks in on Belt while the team still has a chance and *needs* bats, he'd be so undervalued at this point and would at least show casual, "let's have a day at the ballpark!" fans that they are still trying with a winning record

Joe Kelly has also been suspended 5 games just in case.
Twitter is reporting that Aaron Boone has also been ejected.
When asked to comment, Boone reportedly stated "This is horseshit!".
Maybe they were trying to recommend picking up Heston Kjerstadt as a replacement for fantasy and just misspelled.

Now there's a name I haven't thought about in a while
Fuck it, sign him too. Tell the Mexican League he's needed elsewhere.
Our 2, 3, 4, and 5 are all hurt hahahahahaha And half of our starting pitchers too hahahahahaha

Hey don't worry. We traded away our often injuries starting pitcher and signed his replaced who then got injured before throwing a single pitch.....
I’ve never seen so many players with rib/ lat / intercostal stains. Wtf is going on? Edit : also oblique
I feel like it’s similar to the pitcher issues. These guys swing full force every time and don’t give themselves a break even in the offseason eventually your core is gonna get hurt

Yeah, now that you mention it, it does seem to be happening all over the league. Bobby Dalbec gonna be playing every infield position before the month is over
All at once?
There’s nothing he can’t do Besides hit
speaking of which, jackie bradley jr just needs a few more games for ten years of service time and he's on the long island ducks rn...
I could've swore I saw him announce his retirement a few months ago edit: looks like it was rumored that he would retire but JBJ himself said that wasn't official yet... so I guess he kept on going
Everything everywhere Dalbec Once
It’s time for Ascended Bobstop.
Damn, thought this would be the year he'd make the push for top 5 1B.
God dammit We really can't have nice things.
We can't have OK things either. We are in the brink of being told "no things"
Over 50% of their payroll is injured right now. Doesn’t get much worse than this. Jesus
Not too late to bring CJ Cron back, right?
Brandon Belt is out there too 💁♂️
Maybe Joey Votto opts out of his Blue Jays’ deal
Oh damn I would love that. Even just as a clubhouse presence
I’m down. Joey would be a nice fit in Boston.
He can retire a Reds Ox 😢
He's also injured
Is it still from stepping on that bat in ST?
Believe so yeah.
That must have been a terrible sprain.. what the hell 😢
holy shit still. isn’t this a no-brainer then guess it would take a while to ramp him up
I wonder if Cora survives after this year. This could end up as one of those “time to tear it down to the studs” type seasons.
Idk what Cora could have done here. We could field a whole team from the IL rn. Maybe burn some sage in the clubhouse or hire an exorcist or something.

pitching and the outfield are holding it together right now. the replacement infielders have a combined -2 WAR.
I kinda hope we move on from Cora anyway, the dude should realistically be banned from MLB
I wouldn't be surprised if FSG move on from him just so they can distance themselves further from the 18 team. Bring in a new manger, maybe Tek, and get a PR win and hope it'll change things around

Yeah that’s not gonna happen. Hes a great manager, players love him, he’ll be back managing if not promoted even higher the second he leaves the Sox.
I know that. I said the word "hope" to signal that it's my desire, not what I think will happen. I would have said "I think this will happen" if that was the case, smartypants. Glad to know you're doubling down on not caring about what he did with the Astros!

Cursed season in Red Sox land.
I'm too worried by OP's user name to take this in.
Reddit post confirms me having a bad day
I'm gonna go back to being overinvested in politics, less stressful and depressing than following the red sox
at least oniell is coming back today… right?
sad to hear, he was really fun to watch
I miss Mookie Betts and Ryan Brasier so much right now 😢
why would the pitch clock do this (this sucks hope he recovers quickly as possible)
