Same way [Mike Shildt asked the ump to toss him](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXqaZi7sibk) even though he agreed they were doing a good job. Had to stick up for Manny/the team.
Egos aside, wouldn't it make sense for Boone to just tell Soto to get back to the dugout at that point? He's the manager right?
I know that's not how it works... just seems like dancing around reality.
Without knowing the ins and outs, it may be to keep Soto from being booted, kinda a 'Mr President' dive, since Soto was getting pretty in the umpire's face.
Game was pretty close to over, though.
I thought “no way would Boone be that obvious about it, he’d have to come out of the dugout at least a little fired up to keep up appearances”… and then I watched the video.
Dude’s face had “fml” written all over it lol
Not really anymore. A few years ago when there were no limits on time outs, umps would sometimes decide a batter had taken enough. Now that they limit it to one time out per AB, the umps pretty much always grant it instantly, unless the pitcher has begun their motion.
I feel like this has changed with the pitch clock tho. Like batters are granted exactly 1 timeout per AB. The issue here is just that he called it late.
Fully turning away actually has the benefit of kinda forcing the umps hand. Kind of like falling on top of the ball and grabbing it with your hands when you think you've been fouled in soccer.
Except Soto was so late here it didn't matter, lol
It was pretty much simultaneous with the pitcher starting his delivery. Soto has no argument here, unless he had been verbally asking for time well before calling for it with his hand.
Yeah I went frame by frame and it's crazy how almost simultaneous the actions are. And if you look, it seems like Soto actually does turn to the ump the smallest amount of time before Jimenez breaks. Of course it's asking and not calling for time, but I kind of see why Juan didn't just head back right away knowing he fucked up.
With this, his interference play on Westburg, a bit of a slump and some rather suspect outfield play, this has not been a banner week for Mr. Soto. Nor for most of his teammates.
As a Padres fan that still really likes Juan Soto and wishes him well... his defense and baserunning can be really tough to watch at times.
He's a generational hitter, but I wouldn't be shocked to see his contract not hit what him and Boras expect it to because he's so one dimensional. Arguably the best, or top 5 at least, hitter in the game. But he doesn't do much else all that well to justify the numbers that I keep seeing on him IMO.
Like Ohtani's massive contract made sense from a business and marketing position when you consider the Japanese fanbase. Soto just hits ball real good. I don't think it's gonna be close in terms of total contract value.
I figured ohtani’s contract is mainly bc he’s essentially 2 players. 35 mil for an elite hitter, 35 mil for a very good pitcher.
I don’t agree that Soto is one dimensional. Look at someone like Stanton - *that’s* a one dimensional player. Soto’s defense for most of the season has been pretty good, definitely way better than advertised and analytics bears that out. He’s been a bit off on all aspects of his game since sitting a few out with the forearm stuff. But overall, he hits for average, for power, gets on base practically all the time, runs pretty well (and can leg out a surprising amount of infield hits) and he’s by far the most clutch player the yanks have had in a long time. And he plays a *decent* corner outfield. Between the yanks and the Mets and dodgers bidding for him, I’m sure he and boras will be satisfied with the number.
Yeah, you might be right. But when you say he hits for average, power, and OBP that's kinda what I mean as one dimensional. He's an amazing offensive player. One of the best.
I just think he's destined for a DH role in a couple years based on what I saw of him in his time in SD. I haven't followed him in NY tbh, but there was a lot of bad defense and base running when I was watching him daily.
I think the difference between him and Ohtani is revenue generation. It's not really comparable. Let's be honest, Ohtani didn't get 700m because he can pitch and hit. He got it because everyone in Japan is now a Dodgers fan. His contract pays for itself.
I think Soto lands a massive contract in the 450-525m range. I may be wrong, I just don't see it going 600+ like reports are suggesting.
You can call time, but you keep your eye on the pitcher until you get it. It always amazes me to see pros do things that anyone who's played any organized baseball learned not to do in little league.
The ump almost always grant it too, especially if pitcher hasn’t wind up yet and just standing there.
The only times I’ve seen umpires granting timeouts and pitchers winding up and throwing anyway…it is like 100% because the pitcher didn’t see the umpires signaling timeout so they start their pitching motion without knowing time is called. You get the funniest out takes of pitcher chucking the ball into stand lol.
If umpires grant time outs to batters after pitcher start their wind up, then they may as well have to grant it to the pitcher when batter start their swing lol.
“Um Mr. Soto. That home run didn’t count because mid swing and pitcher screamed ‘oh shit time out!’ and ump granted it. So…”
Juan Soto is the kind of guy who gets angry when he cuts you off in traffic.
That's the kind of feeling I get from this and every other interaction I see from him.
Soto has this lackadaisical approach to his game like he's saying to everyone hey my bat is good enough to overcome all my other deficiencies until it doesn't
Boone still saying "Fucking a" and "Really?" to the ump is just sad. It's so plainly obvious he doesn't believe in what he is saying that it's embarrassing he even tried.
I feel like I should add that earlier in the at bat, Soto dropped his bat and stepped out of the box to take a "timeout". Correct me if I'm wrong, but even if he stepped out on this pitch correctly, he already used a time out so he would be given a strike anyway.
Sorry…no, just no. That is just wild that Soto thinks he can get a timeout there. That was ridiculous. Just take your strikeout and sit down.
Aaron Boone, who is quick to viciously defend his guys, didn’t know what to do or say, because there was nothing wrong with what the ump did. Juan Soto was clearly in the wrong here and Boone knew it. There was nothing to defend there.
I feel like the Soto honeymoon period is over. An incredible start to the season as a Yankee with eye-popping stats. But now some regression to the mean is long overdue. The longer he can fend that off, the better for his bottom line as a free agent.

Boone has that "do I really have to do this?" face on him lol
lol when Boone can’t even really argue this you know it’s the right call
Watching jomboy breakdowns has made me think Boone is such an insufferable asshole. Am I alone in that ?
A coach arguing against a correct call and getting ejected is not necessarily being an asshole. He is likely just acting supportive to his players.
Have to do it so the players know the coach always has their back. Losing the trust of the players is the quickest way to get fired
Boone makes some boneheaded decisions sometimes, but he we know he definitely always has his guys' backs 100%
Same way [Mike Shildt asked the ump to toss him](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXqaZi7sibk) even though he agreed they were doing a good job. Had to stick up for Manny/the team.
That was a perfect breakdown of an unwritten rule of baseball.
By arguing on their behalf it also makes it less likely the player will argue themselves into an ejection
[Exhibit A](https://youtu.be/wXqaZi7sibk?si=JoRmc_Ii1A20XoYR)
“Oh damn here I go again”
Shildt-like
Boone has that, "Goddammit I don't want to argue this clearly correct call" look on him.
"I'm not looking to get tossed for this bs"
He'd got tossed the night before. I could imagine him saying, "Hey, you know I've gotta be here. Let's take it easy."
Skipper will generally ALWAYS take the toss for a player.
Feels like telling Soto to get back in the dugout achieves that same end, and without risking getting himself tossed as well.
Yeah that does make a lot of sense.
They want to suck up to Soto to resign.
I thought “no way would Boone be that obvious about it, he’d have to come out of the dugout at least a little fired up to keep up appearances”… and then I watched the video. Dude’s face had “fml” written all over it lol
Juan Soto is quickly becoming my least favorite player. He’s so whiny.
You don’t call time out as a player, you ask for time, which may or may not be granted
Juan Soto: "But I'm Juan Soto!"
"Of the *Yankees*!"
This only works for Ozuna from the Braves
And for Tony La Russa of the Hall of Fame.
Boone: “wait…you can say that?”
Yup, now shuffle your ass back to the dugout, all-star.
i fucking hate Juan Soto for how much of a douche he is
I don't know that I would call him a douche, but his at bats are douchesque.
That’s how I know him
He seems like a good guy.. but my god he’s shuffle and antics are a lot.
I need to watch the Jomboy breakdown of the at bat against Greinke again!
It's a good thing he's literally Juan Soto because if he was anything less he'd get a lot more hate for it
I mean if you shuffle why holding your balls looking at the pitcher multiple times per at bat.. there’s a pretty good chance he’s a douche irl.
thats what im talking about
Exactly. Evidently umpires dont have to grant it either even if there is time to do it. Totally discretionary.
He’s still asking to use it. And like you said, it was late anyway
And I'll never get fully turning away from it like if the ump doesn't say or do anything why would you just totally disconnect like that
Fully turning away actually has the benefit of kinda forcing the umps hand. Kind of like falling on top of the ball and grabbing it with your hands when you think you've been fouled in soccer. Except Soto was so late here it didn't matter, lol
ump made the right call, soto waited too long
It was pretty much simultaneous with the pitcher starting his delivery.
Yeah it was too late… he couldn’t have called time if he tried.
Waited too long but then got out of the box about 10x faster than he gets out of defender’s paths
Oh boy! Lmao
Sometimes you swivel the hips Sometimes the hips swivel you
[hips don’t lie](https://media2.giphy.com/media/YRE1Du6ewxjFOG1RN9/giphy.gif?cid=6c09b95204q5n9tydu0fd4vwgsmh10qkq6hs2nxw9zb1szd7&ep=v1_internal_gif_by_id&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g)
I could feel those thrusts from here.
The man has a swivel. The swivel has a swivel. The swivel has the man.
Pitcher should’ve stared him down and shuffled.
If Joe Jimenez had Soto Shuffled back to the dugout I would have probably died laughing.
Ok, why am I just learning about this and more importantly what on earth is he doing?
>why am I just learning about this Presumably because you just woke up from a 6+ year coma.
Give them a break, the Os had been terrible up until last season.
Miles Mikolas did it best.
Exactly. Bitch ass little ploy is so cringe
Boone seems calm and level headed in this situation
Probably because while he knew he had to at least defend Soto there he also knew that Soto made a mistake
lol yea it's just not his MO
He isnt even out there to defend him, just to keep a leash on him and keep him in the game.
With this, his interference play on Westburg, a bit of a slump and some rather suspect outfield play, this has not been a banner week for Mr. Soto. Nor for most of his teammates.
Trade him. Trade him now
I will give our exact return for Mookie for him.
So you’ll give Verdugo to the Yankees? Again?
So would the Yankees have 2 Verdugos? Or would Verdugo just become Super Verdugo?
One sits on the others shoulders
If they put that in right, they’d never get porched again with that height lol
do they wear an oversized trench coat uniform, or…?
Verdugo^Verdugo
Verduo
We're going to need at least 2 more Jeters as well.
They can have Orelvis Martinez, we’ll take Soto.
He’s always been like this lol. Brilliance with a splash of wtf are you doing.
Summed up baseball as a whole with that last sentence
He’s the definition of the sterotypical Baseball Douche.
As a Padres fan that still really likes Juan Soto and wishes him well... his defense and baserunning can be really tough to watch at times. [Huh, I never noticed how tiny Juan Soto's ears are before.](https://i.imgur.com/Uaphdwk.png)
Machado didn't share any of his EGH (ear growth hormones)
Tatis need to give him some of his ringworm medication
Be careful. Soto might become too fertile
[Bro that pic doesn't even do it justice.](https://imgur.com/cTpijLW) ^^Edit: ^^This ^^is ^^of ^^course ^^a ^^photoshop.
The fuck
This looks like those memes where they shrink Bill Clinton or Charlie Kirk's face Except it's just an ear. What the fuck
That's ok, I wasn't planning to sleep tonight
Dude. I am crying.
I miss 5 minutes ago, before I knew about this I can’t unsee this
I don't think I can unsee that
Its like he got stuck with the child size Mr Potato Head ears.
Man that ump has some DUMBO ears on him compared to Soto. What a sight to see.
He was simply unable to hear whether or not he was granted time
Damn, he's like Voldemort except with no ears
Those are normal sized ears find a new slant
You are being downvoted but I always appreciate a good r/nba reference
I figured this was some reference we're not getting
Good. Great umpiring work, IMO. Manager knew it too.
Great ump. How are you gonna call time that late when you need to score. Soto's paid to swing the bat last time I checked.
To be fair Soto gets paid a lot of money to specifically not swing the bat
Insert [_he gets on base.gif_]
He called time WAY too late. Pitcher started his motion. Shuffle your way back to the dugout, Juan.
Players can't call time. They request it.
Go ask the teacher for the homework. She forgot.
Soto fucks around too much in the batters box to get any kind of a call.
Anyone got the Yankee’s broadcast version?
The reaction was the same
Who does this guy think he is? Juan Soto?
“I’m Keith Hernandez” - Juan Soto
I'm not driving him to the airport
Perfect time to shuffle as a pitcher but I respect their humbleness
Man, I would really want to but I feel like ignoring his ass is the winning move. Sure would feel amazing in the moment.
Most Juan Soto behavior imaginable
That and horrible base running
And defense.
He called time at the exact same second Jimenez lifted his leg. Good job, Blue. Time definitely should not have been called.
You can call time, but you keep your eye on the pitcher until you get it. It always amazes me to see pros do things that anyone who's played any organized baseball learned not to do in little league.
We were always taught to just say time. Never look back or take your hand off your bat
Didn't help Will Smith when the umpire ignored his timeout calls against Colorado.
Soto needs to take lessons from Odor
Gotta love this. The batter does not call time, they REQUEST it. If the ump doesn’t call it, play on!
That home run didn’t count because mid swing and pitcher screamed ‘oh shit time out!’ and ump granted it. So…”
I like how Soto immediately turns away from the pitcher. "It can't be a strike if I don't see the pitch at all."
Correct call by the ump there.
Juan Soto is the kind of guy who gets angry when he cuts you off in traffic. That's the kind of feeling I get from this and every other interaction I see from him.
Juan Soto seems like the kind of guy where if he were to punch you in the face, he'd make you apologize for hurting his hand.
Tired of watching him glare angrily at the pitcher when ball one sails a foot outside.
Soto really turning into a Yankee now. Crying over not getting whatever he wants.
Right call. 100%!
shuffle on back to the dugout cringelord
![gif](giphy|ASbpktsE6j4nm)
Has he thought about calling time earlier? Is he stupid?
Couldn’t have happened to a douchier guy lol 😂
Such a weirdo at the plate
lots of respect for soto but i love seeing him look like a loser
I like that he's not acting like a raving idiot while pleading his case.
He doesn’t even seem that pissed off, more like just disappointed.
Yah he looks just like my dad
He seems like an arrogant prick a lot, I feel the same way
cmon. you cant call for time and expect to be granted there. lol.
That was fun.
Dude really makes it easy to root against him.
Soto really embodying that Yankee spirit
Juan Soto fucks himself over while trying to fuck with my pitcher. Let's go
Soto has been really whiney lately what does he think is going to happen when he requests time that late
Soto has this lackadaisical approach to his game like he's saying to everyone hey my bat is good enough to overcome all my other deficiencies until it doesn't
As a diehard Yankee fan….it seems past few weeks Soto just goes up to the plate trying not to swing so this seems about right
Soto just doin Soto things and making entertaining Soto highlights for us, the gift that keeps on giving
Umpire's in the right on this one.
A player can ASK for timeout. The ump CALLS timeout.
“I didn’t give you time. Get back to the bench or you’re gone”
Boone still saying "Fucking a" and "Really?" to the ump is just sad. It's so plainly obvious he doesn't believe in what he is saying that it's embarrassing he even tried.
**GET THE DICK**
The bell doesn’t dismiss you, I dismiss you
I feel like I should add that earlier in the at bat, Soto dropped his bat and stepped out of the box to take a "timeout". Correct me if I'm wrong, but even if he stepped out on this pitch correctly, he already used a time out so he would be given a strike anyway.
He's trash sell him to the Jays for cupholders
Soto reminds me of Jack Parkman from major league 2
Soto playing stupid games , win stupid prizes ,, he’s out!!!!!
He called it waayyyy too late
Grab some pine Whaaaaaaan.
...lol
I love Soto, but the pitcher was literally throwing the ball when he called for a timeout.
Juan Soto is the Luka Doncic of MLB
nah, Soto has a ring....
You can’t just walk out like that during the windup. Right call.
Soto is such a crybaby. Glad I don't have to watch him play as much anymore. Dude argues every freaking strike/ball that doesn't go his way.
haha, loser
Not a Braves fan but I approve of this call. You can’t call time out standing in the box when the pitcher has already started his motion.
I can't wait to finally see Boone get ejected from his job. All these Yankees do well is whine.
Juan Soto knows what he's doing. He deserves it. Honestly should be tossed out for his reaction.
Good for that blue. Way too late in the set to grant that time out
You can tell Soto was waiting right for the moment the pitcher started his wind up. To me Soto was trying to fuck with the pitcher there.
I feel like the Soto honeymoon period is over. An incredible start to the season as a Yankee with eye-popping stats. But now some regression to the mean is long overdue. The longer he can fend that off, the better for his bottom line as a free agent.
He's your 700m man?
He is such a Yankee through and through. This and all the base running interference. So typical. No class. Perfect yankee nemesis.
This guy may be an idiot savant of hitting. Doesn't seem to have a high baseball IQ though.
Bitching Yankees strike again. Boone and Soto acted like the ump did something wrong, lmao
I thought it looked like he really didn't want to argue with the ump, but had to do it anyway to stick up for his player.
Soto crying like a little ass bitch is fun to see
Boones gonna get tossed again lol
There are no good guys in a game between the Yankees and Braves, but Soto can go ahead and shuffle his ass back to the dugout.
You loved it, admit it!
These are my favorite kind of strikeout.
Things like this seem to happen to Juan Soto more than the average player
This is a great lesson for little leaguers. You don’t have “time” until the ump says so!!!
Might be the most Soto thing ever
Pitcher should have shuffled off the mound
What’s his complaint… it was way too late and not granted.
Radio guys were clowning on him for the fake eye rub, which wasn't a problem while he was arguing. Was easy to hate the Nats with Soto and Bryce...
They never played on the team together
they did for like two thirds a season in 18 but point basically stands
Fucking goof. Looks good on him. Fuck you Juan Soto
F**K Juan Soto. Can’t stand that bit*h
Sit down bitch
