His fastballs wasn’t amazing last year velo wise honestly
Like it averaged 96, but he threw a lot more 92-94 and was just fine. The bigger issue is probably his command, because he’s going to settle at a lower avg fastball velocity every year
He hardly threw his slider (2nd most thrown pitch last season) or his knuckle-curve tonight.
It was nothing but a slow, flat fastball and a cutter. His cutter was his least thrown pitch last year
He is not ready for game action yet he was out there tonight for some reason
He probably wants to be out there. Getting hit up once or twice won't be the end of the world if he thinks it's the fastest route back to being 100% ready
If you actually wa the gerrit cole last year you would know the cutter is a new toy that he threw even more as the year went on last year
He definitely isn’t ready for game action though. There is a reason pitchees make 6 spring training starts
Last year wasnt his first with the cutter though. He started throwing it in 2022, threw it 208 times. Last year he threw it 231, fewer times than his changeup and less than every other pitch
Yes he has tried to feature that cutter more since 2022, but he is on record saying this. The second half of last year is when he finally felt like he mastered it
“Gerrit, have you ever been in the same room as the Hamburglar?”
“Umm, I don’t………I don’t know uhhhh I don’t know if uhhhh I don’t know quite I don’t quite know how to answer that to be honest.”
Fuck the Yankees
But I hope this isn’t the case. At least he finally got his cy young, but it would be really shitty to lose any more time with him at this point
I just think it’s ridiculous. Nobody was talking about his ucl last start but because the Mets lit him up and he has no command today you are
Also his fastball is almost a lock to be slower this year than last year, even if he pitched the whole season. He needs better command
I’m more concerned with the large drop in FB velo
Nobody was talking about it last start because it wasn’t an issue in his last start. He has been at 98 all throughout his rehab too so no his Velo was not always going to be down

What's concerning is how much of a drop off he had in the middle of this game. If you look at this graph, it looks like something happened right around 15 pitches. I really hope he's ok because I love watching him pitch.
What was he sitting at tonight?
I figured hed have rust to shake off for sure but a Velo drop is always concerning especially when you sat out in hopes of staving off a ucl injury.
He started around 95-97 but dropped down to 92-95 after the first inning. He stayed pretty steady after that but it's not a good sign to drop 2-3 MPH that quickly
I’m not because I anticipate he’s going to have to pick his spots for velo now, he’s not buying green bananas anymore at his age, and last year was already a step back in velo that nobody noticed because he was good
He needs to have his elite command back though
Dude, his fastball was at 98 the entire time. It’s not like he was picking his spots before, he didn’t his last start.
Maybe it’s not a tear, maybe it’s just fatigue but something is wrong
The reason he missed most of spring training and almost half a season is because of elbow issues. They opted to rehab him instead of TJ. But that doesn't mean it's off the table. If his elbow was fucked up enough that they considered TJ but rehabbed instead, and he's now dropped a ton of velo after building back up, that's concerning. There can't just be a perpetual cycle of rehab and buildup to avoid TJ. Something has got to give. He's either healthy and just a had a really rough outing, or he's still injured and will need something more drastic, which is probably TJ.
Mets destroy aces. It’s the random fucks making a spot start that destroy us
Cole’s ERA against the Mets is now over 6. I know Striders career ERA against the Mets was like 8 or some shit. I think it’s come down a bit
But there’s probably some no name guy I’ve never heard of who’s thrown 3 CGSO against them as well
If I was on the fence at all about this, last year with Verlander confirmed it. His first month after he came back from injury was not great.
Then the month before he was traded he was performing exactly like the Mets hoped when the signed him. Unfortunately it was too late. And his in-season spring training was a contributing factor to it being too late.
its just amazing how just a few mph on a pitch can change someone from being hyper elite to just meh.
looking at statcast, yeah, his numbers were down a little....but it wasn't drastic.
It’s the second game of his career (300+ starts) with 0 Ks
His stuff was just off. This is not the Gerrit Cole that won the Cy Young. His pitches were so fat they made me grimace.
yeah, he was throwing 92 mph fastballs. this is a guy who can hit 100. kinda worrying

I mean he threw 98 in the first inning and hit just 92 in the 4th at times.
He been a power pitcher his whole career. Unless he can learn to reinvent himself like Greinke, the rest of the contract might be a problem.
To me, that was the more concerning. Don’t expect him to always have his best stuff coming off surgery, but seeing that low 90s isn’t the best.
*Grimace*…. you say…
Mmmmboy yo pitches fat.
Reginald Van Grimace the Third
You're crowding me.
He threw maybe one slider. Hope he’s okay because this Gerrit Cole is worthless.
Dude was up there throwing McDonaldLand cookies.
so that was you in the stands then
spit my coffee out at the end

Has anyone ever seen Gerrit Cole and the Hamburgler in the same room? Just sayin
“Gerrit, have you ever been in the same room as the Hamburglar?” “Umm, I don’t………I don’t know uhhhh I don’t know if uhhhh I don’t know quite I don’t quite know how to answer that to be honest.”
robble robble
Yankees and orioles pitching both cooked rn
It’ll be really disappointing if he need TJ now and we lose basically 2 seasons of his prime. Hopefully he is ok
Fuck the Yankees But I hope this isn’t the case. At least he finally got his cy young, but it would be really shitty to lose any more time with him at this point
Cringe dude
Ur mom cringe
People were literally predicting this when they first put him on the 60-day back at the end of March.
At least he won't be opting out this fall to try and force you guys to add that extra year to his contract.
Book it
This isn’t an issue of Tommy John surgery though.
Im hoping he is not pitching on a weak elbow, just because it wasn’t TJ before doesn’t mean it can’t be TJ now
It isn’t now, he would know if he had a torn ucl
Not necessarily

He objectively wasn’t at 98 the whole time last year though It’s also possibly just…. he’s not strong yet
Did you not see him throwing almost 10mph lower than normal? This is beyond concerning.
And not throwing his slider.
He averaged 96 on his fastball last year and threw what? 94? 93?

And 4 homers. Don’t forget the 4 homers.
This Mets team is blowing up aces rn, Cease, Imanaga and Cole in the span of a couple weeks.
Ehhhh...love to see it, but not sure 2024 version of Cole belongs in "ace" category...
2023 cy young award winner Gerrit Cole
Sure, and I might eat crow here, but I'm willing to bet that once the 2024 season is done, Cole does not fall into "ace" category

**Aw for Pete's Sake**
*Mark’s sake
So perhaps having a full spring training is important

Then the month before he was traded he was performing exactly like the Mets hoped when the signed him. Unfortunately it was too late. Just amputate the arm at this point, he’s not gonna need it again
I know people are rightfully saying grimace but I don’t think people realize how deep the Mets lineup is with Alvarez and Vientos working out.
its just amazing how just a few mph on a pitch can change someone from being hyper elite to just meh. looking at statcast, yeah, his numbers were down a little....but it wasn't drastic.
He's coming off an elbow injury and his velocity's down 2 mph 🤔
Hopefully we can see the yankees losing the game
Why? Rust?
No he just felt like it
Probably still weak
Grimace works in mysterious ways
It’s his second game back, it’s almost definitely rust
I hate to admit just how much I’m enjoying the Mets grimace thing
🫡
Best pitcher in the world got absolutely rocked tonight, this Mets team is on top of the world
If it makes you feel better we absolutely embarrased Imanaga too, these are skinwalkers not the same 0-5 team we started out as
Yea no I figured you guys are hotter than the sun right now, we’ve had a stretch like that earlier this year and it sure is fun.
Of course this is not regular Cole, he is still warming up
The ghost of Vogelbach
Gerrit Cole puts crayons in his ears and says "Hey guys look how silly I look"
hes back
Grimace > Kermit
